Chronicle in love with Aggie football
by Owen Courrèges · 04/29/2005 1:13 pmI’ve been taking some flak from readers for my little digs at Texas A&M. Some of it was legitimate (the cloned horse with two butts was an Aggie joke), and some were not ("What a maroon" is an old Looney Tunes insult, not a dig at Aggies). But anyway, if I’m going to get criticized, I might as well deserve it.
To that end, here’s one of the conclusions of a study of Chronicle sports reporting during 2004 done by the Rice Football Webletter:
The Chronicle is currently in love with Coach Fran and the Aggies. We were subject to countless accolades about the re-birth of the A&M program under the new coach. Mickey Herskowitz in particular seems to have a fondness for the program. Several of his columns were devoted to the maroon cause.
I love how the link to the article on the front page is titled "Chronically biased" (our old name!). Anyway, as a proud Rice alum, I felt honor-bound to report the truth here — the Chron is an Aggie-boosting publication.

The Chron is in love with Aggie football?!? Your credibility is starting to swirl in a strangely familiar clockwise pattern with that post.
As a former student of “The University” AND a conservative, I don’t know what to say about the “Barnacle” promoting Aggie Football. I just feel so dirty.
The only reason the Comical focused so much on the Aggie Maroon football team is that the team had an excellent season and will be contending for the mythical National Title within 2 years. When did Rice get football? I know they used to have a team back in the 1950s but didn’t realize they were still playing.
Owen,
You can tease the Aggies all you want but keep in mind who your friends are. When LST asked for donations for the Humvee armor drive, remember the group of Aggie students who answered the call as well as the generous response of the student body.
Though I have to ask, would you have preferred the Chronicle write more stories about Rice considering the Owls went 3-8 losing their last 6?
I can appreciate ags wondering why rice even gets coverage. As a Houston Cougar fan, i gripe at comical sports editors often for lack of UH coverage vs. ag and ut coverage; but when the ags and horns are outdrawing UH by a multiple of 4; my gripe seems meager at best.
The question i would pose to the ags concerned in the least about rice’s coverage, shouldn’t you instead be griping to the comical at their coverage of the texans ? A team that the ags outdraw every week ?
I know Houston is a pro town, but a sub-500 football team getting 4 times the coverage of 2 schools with over 100 years of football. Well, that just ain’t right.

This article refers to negatives, one of whic is loss of employment in the IRS, H&R Block etc.
One group not mentioned are the various lobbists
whose income is based on getting their clients out of the tax code.
This is also true of the ‘Death Tax’ opponents.
This artice is the first rime I have noted the barnacle mentioning the damage to the first level of people wasted in the taxcode. I just wonder if they will mention the lobbists.
also a 57 percent tax is mentioned. but tax on what - with costs of the code removed the estimates I have heard put the final price teh same as it is now.
This of course would remove ANY imact on the ‘poor’. Without a loophole filled tax code the
burden will be be on those who make purchases.

Before Coach Fran, the comical very seldom published anything positive about the Aggies. It’s about time we got some positive press from the comical.
