It’s becoming harder to take the Chronicle seriously
by Owen Courrèges · 09/09/2005 11:06 amThe Chronicle has an editorial out today on the looming probe into the Katrina debacle. At times it attempts to appear objective, but ultimately (and predictably) lapses into biased nonsense. Take this sentence:
The president should make every effort to educate himself about what went wrong, a list that would include his own failure to perform effectively as commander in chief.
First of all, methinks the Chronicle is using the wrong terminology here. The president is commander in chief of the armed forces as set out in the constitution, although it’s difficult to see how that relates to disaster relief promulgated under FEMA. I think what the Chronicle MEANT to say was that Bush has failed in his duties as chief executive, which is a different matter entirely. As a newspaper, the Chronicle should recognize that words matter.
Secondly, it would be nice if the Chronicle could speak about a probe not yet begun without prejudging the outcome by hurling blame. It makes one wonder if they are serious in their demands that the probe be independent and objective. These suspicions are confirmed by the following, damning sentence:
While not ideal, the most promising option is one suggested by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.: an independent commission along the lines of the Sept. 11 probe. It should be headed by national figures of unassailable independence and credibility, such as former President Jimmy Carter…
Carter is “of unassailable independence and credibility?” How out of touch can the Chronicle get? Carter is a liberal Democrat and a chronic critic of the Bush Administration. Conservatives wince at the very mention of his name, and yet the first name the Chronicle suggests as an independent voice is Carter?
It’s really becoming difficult to take the Chronicle seriously anymore. This isn’t just biased. It’s stupid.

Carter: Arafat and Castro’s best friend.
Powell: Failed in first Gulf War.
O’Connor: “Over time we will rely increasingly, or take notice at least increasingly, of international and foreign courts in examining domestic issues.”
I’d sooner trust any three of the Three Stooges. Including Shemp.
Actually Owen, I would suggest that conservatives do not “wince” at the mention of “Jimmah” Carter, they LAUGH.
The Chronicle is aiming squarely at the readers on the far Left. There is nothing wrong with that, it is their right to do so. This may also explain why readership seems to be dropping and why they are trying to peddle the papers at half the subscription rate and I don’t know if they still throw free papers. I understand that the cost of starting a newspaper is quite high but I am still puzzled why no one has done so. I think it is sad that our city has only one paper. I can’t help but think that Houstonian’s support for another News paper would be overwhelming.
Just like Howard Dean’s comments, illogical statements by the Chronicle will be interpreted like Dean’s—BIASED and IGNORANT!!!!
There can never be an unbiased commission as long as the minority Democrats are involved. The media continues to go to the MINORITY Democrats for their opinions as if it were gospel. The Democrats continue to believe that the public believes them and the media as if there were no other sources of information out there. If they keep playing with that old playbook, they will be the third party behind the Independents. More and more people are beginning to say “They don’t speak for me—That’s not my opinion!!!”
Amen, Sites like this one are becoming more and more affective at getting information to the masses.
Fewer persons are reading the Chronicle, and fewer are watching stations like CNN, MSNBC, etc.
I love it.

The republicans allow the Dem’s to function as though they were the majority. The Republicans, whom I voted for, need a spine implant.
Owen, comments like “It’s really becoming difficult to take the Chronicle seriously anymore” befuddles me.
For years they have been as liberal as Molly Ivins and their approach has been to copy not investigate. In their vacumn of unbiased journalism ethics, what more could you expect.

The Republicans have been in the minority for such a long time, it will take them some time to learn they are in the majority. This is obviously compounded by the fact that the Democrats still think they are in the majority and the media treats them like they are. Only elections and time will tell if the Republicans can handle it. If it wasn’t for websites like this one, the public would not be informed or at least have an opposing opinion to make their own judgements on. There are changes coming but it will take time.

Yep you’re right and I have emailed them in texas and told them so in a polite infatic way.
Owen you mean you have been taking the Chronicle seriously? I am surprised.
It’s “becoming” more difficult to take the Chronicle seriously? Since when could you ever take it seriously?
In response to comment #3 by Rolf,
Yes the Chronicle still throws free papers. There were 3 of them on my yard last week. I called the Chronicle and told them to stop littering my yard. I also insisted that they send someone out to pick up their “litter”, and they did. No more litter problems.
No one has taken the Chron seriously since the Post died along with Lynn Ashby. He is being propped up by a bag of popsicle sticks and dances to the strings that we know who pulls them. He used to be a nice guy. Mowed his own yard and everything.
Although the Chron saved me big time once. I had a German Sherpard that had 11 pups and for six weeks the Chron was invaluable for health and training of them pups.
Probably the longest run of good help it has ever provided.
The end result top and bottom was about the same.

They make me Chronically Ill with the sick
make-believe stories they tell.
