Officials Eye Al Qaeda in Bali Bombings

BALI, Indonesia — Indonesia (search) said Sunday it suspected two fugitives linked to Al Qaeda had masterminded the homicide bombings of crowded restaurants in tourist resorts on the Indonesian island of Bali that killed at least 26 people and injured more than 100.

I think this has been brought up before, but it’s always an interesting point of discussion:
Is the capacity of terrorists to make major strikes being diminished since 9/11 or have we just been lucky here in America? Are Muslim terrorists getting desperate or are they just being stealthy and biding their time?
While I tend to resist adding rules to any endeavor, it would seem to me that to add gravitas and statesmanship to all future comments, the following lead-in phrase would seem to be almost mandatory:
“In the aftermath of Katrina…
or
“In the wake of Rita…
That seems to be the practice of our dead-tree publication, and look how successful they are.
Mike
My vote is for biding their time. The history of the OBL side of Al Qaeda shows patience and perseverance. I do give a hat tip to US intelligence for their successes but I fear that “it” is only a matter of time till Bali type bombings begin in the US and another 911 size disaster is thrust upon us.
How is that for a positive uplifting thought for Sunday morn?
I think the alcaders are waiting on the Dems to get back in power. The they can do all their US bombing and feel safe knowing they wont have to pay the ultimate price. The Progressives will give them a pass and just blame us for making them mad.
Maybe we should put the alcaders to work on the demo of NO. They MIGHT change their ways. They get to blow up things and get paid. Then spend some time on Burbon St. and get laid.
The Astros are the “Wild Card Champs.” Maybe I’m just getting old and crotchity but I just can’t get excited.
I am a fan of baseball from way back and somehow the old “Race For The Pennant” has lost its luster. Don’t get me wrong I am happy that the Astros are going further in the playoffs, but “Wild Card Champs?” That just does not engender excitement in me.
That does seem kinda weird. Pretty unusual for someone trying to just kill themself to use explosives as a method, I would think. From a CDC article on suicide methodology:
“In 2001, suicide was the third leading cause of death among persons aged 10–19 years (1). The most common method of suicide in this age group was by firearm (49%), followed by suffocation (mostly hanging) (38%) and poisoning (7%) (1).”
Considering the wild card team from each league has a pretty good record in the World Series, I’ll take a “Wild Card Championship” over a pennant any season.
I think that person that commited suicide outside the Oklahoma game is taking the Sooners bad season a little to serious. They should have waited till after the Texas game.
Lately, whether at the ball park, shopping or whatever many women are walking around with great looking implants. They wear low cut shirts to show off their new prizes. Question: Is it wrong, rude, uncalled for to walk up and compliment these beauties? Would just a simple “nice rack” be sufficient? I want to let these women know the appreciation I have for what they have accomplished? I asked my wife about this and tonight I sleep on the sofa. What,is it me? Did I say the wrong thing? Any thoughts?

I am not flaming or trolling here. Seriously wazzup with “Wild Card Champs”? Football does not have “Wild Card Champs”. What about those that “just qualified” for the playoffs by virtue of a winning record? What does that make them? I guess I am making a mountain out of a mole hill.
Don’t get me wrong I am glad that the Astros are going into the playoffs. That celebration I saw on TV reminded me of a real “Division Champs” celebration. Just don’t seem right. Sigh I remember the old days of Division pennant races, now that was when the teams celebrated.

You are a glutton for punishment. As for comments to the ummmm ladies that catch your eyes may I suggest a trip to the local sports shop for a catchers mask and other protection. Seems to me you might be cruisin for a bruisin.
Not all Muslims are terrorists. In the words of Namal Kawash and the Free Muslims Coalition:
“The Free Muslims Coalition believes that there can NEVER be a justification for terrorism.
The Coalition believes that fundamentalist Islamic terror represents one of the most lethal threats to the stability of the civilized world. The existence of Islamic terrorists is the existence of threats to democracy. There is no room for terrorism in the modern world and the United States should take a no-tolerance stance on terrorism in order to avoid another tragedy, along the lines of 9-11. With the added threat of biochemical weapons, the call to defeat terrorism has never been so urgent.
Among Islamic scholars, the concept of jihad ranges in definition from the personal struggle against temptation to holy war. All calls for jihad to create an Islamic state should be rejected as heretic and a threat to modern society. The Coalition feels that the concept of jihad should be reinterpreted for a modern day context in which holy war is obsolete. No holy war needs to be waged; there is no clear and present threat to Islam; the only war that needs to be waged in the modern world is one against terrorists and extremists. As militant Islamic fundamentalism increases, the Coalition will wage a battle of minds as we bring Islam into the 21st century and introduce a doctrine which is compatible with democracy and modern living.”
Support this group. A war against terrorism can most effectively be waged from within.
The Free Muslims Coalition may well find its members targets of the Muslim extremists they are so courageous as to defy. I applaude their stepping forward with a common sense agenda, but wonder why 4 years after the 9-11 event and all the consequent terrorist activity?
Fear is a powerful motivator and these folks have taken a long road to overcome the fear of their fellow believers to step forward. I hope their common sense and optimism sweep through at least the Western World of Muslimism so they can be saved when the fall comes.
And there will be a fall. Another 9-11 style attack, or a series of nightclub or train station bombings in this country will precipitate such a fire of hatred and revenge in this nation that the Muslim world will be savaged by our retribution. The only common sense that will prevail at that time will be the old tried and true adages, “the only good enemy is a dead enemy” and “kill them all and let God sort them out”.
I very much fear, not Muslims, but the reaction against them that will happen if an act of terrorism is committed in Texas. Texans have an ingrained mistrust of outsiders and surely 100s if not 1000s will make life miserable, if not non-existant, for the Muslims in our midst who have not spoken out against the terrorists all these years. To not speak out against the terrorists is to support them, thus making the Muslims here outsiders and co-conspirators in the terrorist movemnt.
So, best of luck to these brave souls and may their message be received with open minds and hearts in the Muslim world….for, if it is not, the Muslim religion will not be long for this world or its dream of virginal heaven.
Give me a break. This is just a PR front. Its like the oil companies doing charity work to make their image softer and gentler then polluting the ground and gouging us on pricing. These people want one thing. Dominate the world while killing Jews and Christians. They havent forgotten the crusades.
If we dont systematically start removing them from this country we are doomed. They are already in our colleges and communities, next is in positions in the governments. Then baby, its over.
If you could draw a plan to destroy the US without firing a shot this would be the strategy. The communists tried it but got too greedy and failed somewhat. These guys have learned to be methodical and patient.
Do you not believe there is already espionage in process to infiltrate Muslim groups here and abroad to gain information on their plans, Gregg? Another way to win a war without bullets, perhaps? Not everything you see is as it seems.
We are trying i know but these guys are different. Its a religious thing. With the Germans and Ruskies we could get some white guys, learn the language and mannerisms but with the Islamofacists they deal with much more and culture, tribalism, religon and ethnic appearance its gonna be tough. Try to find a Muslim with the balls to infiltrate the alcaders. They will kill him in a second if he fliched once.
The best way is to get them the hell outa here and kill so damn many of them there they become ineffective.Period.
The Crusades, yes, the Crusades. These battles were fought to prevent the Muslims from destroying the Holy Sites of the Christian religion in the Holy Land.
They were not fought to eliminate or destroy the Muslim religion but to prevent its excesses which were shown once again in Afghanistan where Holy treasures of the Buddhist religion were destroyed in the name of Allah.
If the adherents of the Muslim religion do not gain control of their own destiny from the clerics who are determined to reduce the world to a modern version of the Stone Age then they will be destroyed along with their “holy” men.
Don’t forget the radicals are not just interested in the elimination of Christians and Jews, but ALL of the faithful of ALL religions except their particular sect of Mohamedanism. By virtue of this splitting of the “faith” they are also against themselves, a paradox of sorts.
As a wise man once said, “Build a wall around the Muslim world and within six months there will be no inhabitants inside that compound, each of them having found a deeply religious reason to have killed the others to “preserve” the faith.”.
We have the materials, do we have the willpower?
Sadly, I think not.
I agree with you guys that the Muslims are a sort of self-destructive lot, much more difficult to infiltrate than other cultures. I’m probably not really who you guys think I am. The Beatles left a clue for you all that the walrus was Paul, but here’s a clue of my own:
If my name Arya alQueasy doesn’t give it away then consider that I sometimes fix things with duct tape that I have no business fixing, and I sometimes drink beer in my back yard while watching the bug zapper for entertainment.

In the wake of Rita… no, just kidding.
Bummer of a thought Squawkbox, but I tend to agree. The scenario that really scares me is a suitcase nuke in a densely populated urban area.
Did y’all hear about someone blowing themselves up outside the OU-K State game in Norman?

Think this was a simple suicide, or something else?

“Go Astros” just the same.

Yes, well, it could have been a terrorist attack. In that case, the bomb probably went off sooner than he expected.
