Officials worry over NYC subway threats

by Matt Bramanti | 10/06/2005 4:42 pm | Alert moderator

The Big Apple might be in trouble:

The New York City Police Department is investigating what it deems a credible tip that 19 operatives have been deployed to New York to place bombs in the subway, and security in the subways will be increased, sources told ABC News.

While the police department is taking the threat seriously, it is also urging the public not to be alarmed because – while the source is credible – the information has not been verified.

According to sources in intelligence, emergency services and police headquarters, when three Iraqi insurgents were arrested several days ago during a raid by a joint FBI-CIA team, one of those caught disclosed the threat. Because it slipped out during the arrest, the plot was deemed credible.

This comes just a week after New York transit officials turned down a federal offer of funding for more police dogs:

The Department of Homeland Security is spending $2.7 million to provide 30 bomb-sniffing dogs, along with training for their police handlers, to 10 transit agencies, including the subway systems in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington.

But New York’s subway system, by far the largest and busiest in the country, is not one of them. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority turned down an invitation to apply for the money, officials said yesterday, because the grant would have come with restrictions that they called cumbersome and because the dogs could have been withdrawn and used elsewhere during a national emergency.

Houston, naturally, doesn’t need dogs, because we have an elite Israeli-trained Metro counterterrorism commando squad.

Bush-hater kicked off flight for T-shirt

by Jeremy 'Panda Man' Weidenhof | 10/06/2005 2:04 pm | Alert moderator

Critics of the Left often say that Liberals have few or no social standards; that anything goes with our brethren with Bohemian tendencies. Some on the Left deny the charge, others embrace it. One Portland, Oregon woman apparently takes to it wholeheartedly.

The woman was told to cover her offensive T-shirt before boarding a Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Portland, which she finally agreed to do, but the cover came off during a layover in Reno, Nevada, and the woman was told to change the shirt or de-plane.

Says our intrepid free speech-type:

"There are bigger problems in the country, I can’t believe people can be so petty."

"I didn’t feel that I should have to change my shirt, because we live in the United States, and it’s freedom of speech and it was based on the move "The Fockers", and I didn’t think it should have offended anyone."

Unfortunately for our fashion trendsetter, Southwest refused to allow her to continue to Portland if she did not change the shirt. Thankfully for the rest of the passengers, the woman declined to alter her wardrobe and chose to rent a car to complete her trip.

Wailed the oppressed woman:

"I most likely wont be flying Southwest Airlines again after this."

What was so offensive about “The Fockers?” Turns out it was a tasteless political shirt:

The shirt had pictures of members of the Bush Administration, and a phrase based on the movie "Meet the Fockers," but with one crucial vowel changed.

Such juvenile, boorish behavior seems to be standard from our Left-wing friends these days, but then again Bush hatred knows no bounds.

As for those of you who know how to dress appropriately for air travel, may I suggest Southwest Airlines for your next trip?

Michael Yon, the BEST reporter in Iraq, has a new post up on his website:

The Battle for Mosul IV

In his email to subscribers (free and heartedly recommended), he says:

I am traveling back to Iraq now, and should be there this weekend.

I have prepared an important dispatch entitled "Battle for Mosul IV."  This is a very interesting and important dispatch with many photos, and is just now posted.

By the way, Yon does not consider himself a "reporter", but a "blogger".  He has paid his own way to Iraq, and continues to do so through private contributions.

That is cool. And long overdue.

Dr. Hill’s surgery on Ronnie Earle

In a display of patience and cunning that would make Machiavelli proud, nationally-respected political pollster/strategist (and former "Boss-o-Benzion") Dr. David Hill has cracked open the vault and thrown his oppo-research file on Ronnie Earle over the transom.

Allegations of "drugs, illicit sex and misuse of official automobiles and expense accounts".

Oh my.
