Backbone? Is this the same Governor Perry who states (ad nauseum) that the judicial branch shouldn’t legislate from the bench and then punts school finance reform to the courts for them to handle because it would possibly entail a tax increase, something he was too scared to tackle? He did this so when the courts order a different funding mechanism, he can claim that it wasn’t him and then turn around and blame the courts. When does the shell game end? Perry cut spending for the poor and that’s about it. That’s “real” leadership (he sarcastically types). Owen, you and I have a vastly different definition for the exhibition of backbone.
The fact that Friedman is garnering any support at all shows you what low esteem most Texans have for both Republicans and Democrats.
Surely we can do better than this?

  2. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:29 pm

Only poll that matters is the one taken on election day. Wait, thats Jim and Sarges’ Line.

  3. David Johnson on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:37 pm

There must be a tear in the space-time continuum, because I agree with most of what Willie just said.

    :-)

In any event, I don’t quite understand Friedman’s appeal.

Although I don’t think I would vote for him, I fully understand his appeal in a “throw the bums out” kind of way.

  5. suziQ on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:52 pm

It’s how Jessie Ventura made it into office…although I admired the people of MN for having the courage to elect someone other than one of the two major party candidates, it turned out to be a fiasco for the people there. While Perry is not my favorite guy (never has been), I’ll take him over Bell and Friedman any day of the week!

  6. suziQ on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:55 pm

I forgot one other thing…I noticed this is a Zogby Poll…well that should speak for itself…who knows what the real numbers are??? Zogby totally missed the last major elections!

  7. Willie on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:11 pm

The fact that Perry (with the bully pulpit of the governor’s office) is barely above 40% against a no-name Democrat and a singer/comedian/writer who probably less than 20% of Texans have even heard of must have the Perry campaign in panic mode.
What do you guys think about Mrs. Strayhorn?
    Haven’t heard her mentioned.

  8. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:20 pm

Perry’s numbers are at 40% in good part thanks to Rita. His numbers were dismall before that. (Not that 40% is good). I think that Grandma Strayhorn will give him a real run for his money. I might go so far as place a wager on her winning.
Those that think Bell is the only contender on the right might be in for a surprise.

  9. David Johnson on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:24 pm

    8 Fegan,

Bell is a contender on the right?

  10. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:25 pm

David, So far he is one yes. Your point ?

  11. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:26 pm

oh I get it now, my bad. Sorry on the left. Good catch

  12. squawkbox on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:31 pm

But But But what about Carol Keaton Rylander Strayhorn(sp?) or “One Annoying Grandma” as she is known in my house? This is obvious bias against “annoying Grandmas.” Zogby should be investigated!! There is no doubt that this is a conspiracy by Kinky Perry Bell to minimize her campaign.

  13. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 6:36 pm

Squawk, so your choice. Perry or Strayhorn ? Seems you are not a big fan of Granny, having a hard time believing you like Rick

  14. squawkbox on November 3rd, 2005 at 7:23 pm

    Feagan
I admit that this next gubners election is gonna be real tough on me. I am not a big fan of Mrs Granny. I found it interesting that she was ragging on Perry about hiding office expenses. Now I might be wrong and stand to be corrected but as comptroller is she not supposed to catch this stuff. This looks more politics as usual.

    Good question just the same.

  15. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 7:39 pm

Squawk, no surprise here, but I don’t care for Perry. I kinda like Strayhorn. But that “like” is based on nothing more than just her “delivery”.

I will have to see what Bell has to say. I am also hoping for a couple of Dem contenders.

  16. squawkbox on November 3rd, 2005 at 7:55 pm

Holy crappola I don’t like Bell worse than Granny. Kinky has not shown me anything, but that could change after he gets his signatures. I kinda hope he does get his signatures btw. All I hear from him is that he is a serious candidate. Hey I’d vote Democratic if the right guy shows up. Sadly setting out is becoming an option too.

  17. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 7:58 pm

Squawk, I never said the options were good.

  18. Just Me on November 3rd, 2005 at 8:00 pm

It’s a Zogby poll, that alone should tell you that you can’t believe anythig they say.

Almost 2 months ago I signed up for the Zogby Poll to be part of their poll takers. Of course I told the truth that I had voted for Bush and have never received one poll to give my opinion to them. That tells me that if you voted for Bush you don’t count in their polls.

I get t’eed off when I hear these poll counts on TV, radio or the net everyday and no one has ever asked me my opinion or the opinion of anyone I know. So tell me who or what do they poll to get these numbers?

  19. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 8:05 pm

Just me, so do tell what poll do you trust ? Seems they are pretty close to accurate when it comes time to vote. But I will listen. You don’t trust Zogby, ok who do you trust.

  20. Willie on November 3rd, 2005 at 8:09 pm

The field is definitely weak. Given all the talent in our great state, surely we should be able to do better. The problem is that no Republican (other than the “tough Grandma”) will run against the incumbent. If Bell is the best the Democrats can offer…well…that might say alot about where the Democratic Party is in this state -irrelevant and floundering. I used to have hope for Sen. Hutchison, that is until he recent performance on “Meet The Press”. She showed me that day that she is just “one of the guys” and not worthy of my support. I’m struggling here to come up with anybody.

  21. Just Me on November 3rd, 2005 at 9:26 pm

    Feagan,

There is no poll that I can say that I trust more than another becasue as I said earlier none have ever contacted me, friends, family or co-workers for our opinions, which do vary by the way.

One day I got so tired of reading or hearing about this poll & that poll so I emailed & called family all over Texas, California, Idaho, Washington state, Oregon, Maine, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky & Tennessee and not one person has ever been included in a poll or any of their friends.

So tell me hae you, your friends & family ever been polled?

  22. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 9:32 pm

#21 Just me, yes I have. I also know many people that have. On both sides of the “Aisle”.

  23. Just Me on November 3rd, 2005 at 10:06 pm

    #22
I can understand why you would have more faith than I do in the polls if you have been polled.

But since I have not nor have any of my friends (some who are staunch Democrats)have never been polled I still find it hard to believe what they say as a majority finding. I would think that at least one person that I know would of been polled at least once in their lives or someone that they know.

  24. jimb on November 3rd, 2005 at 10:15 pm

#2 and I stand by it. Polls are misused and abused on a regular basis by just about everyone. The time I laughingly corrected someone here who spelled it ‘poled’ got me to thinking - maybe ‘poled’ is a better way of putting it.

#5 “While Perry is not my favorite guy (never has been), I’ll take him over Bell and Friedman any day of the week!” - I agree fully.

  25. jimb on November 3rd, 2005 at 10:17 pm

BTW - The LST clock is still wrong…

  26. Feagan on November 3rd, 2005 at 10:23 pm

Just me, who knows, maybe I am on someones list, maybe because I was polled once, I don’t know. But I have been and it usually takes a good amount of time.

  27. squawkbox on November 3rd, 2005 at 10:34 pm

Kinky Perry Bell……hmmm that rings. Maybe it should be Kinky Perrybell. Naw. Perry Kinkybell yeah that is it. I think I will change my monikor to that.

  28. Willie on November 3rd, 2005 at 11:01 pm

Kinky works on sooooo many levels.
    :-)

    Yeah it do.

One of my favorite jokes comes from an old Late Night With David Letterman monologue. “Recently, some New York women were polled, and we all know how painful that can be…”.

  31. Maltboy! on November 4th, 2005 at 3:59 pm

    #26

I have been polled twice in the past two days FOR THE EXACT SAME THING - and yes it WAS painful ;). It mainly had to do with public education and the voucher system. It took about 15 minutes, and was really confusing. Towards the end, I just wanted to get off the damn phone. Don’t ask me why I completed it twice - I guess I felt sorry for the ladies on the other end. I asked one of them if people gave her a hard time, and she said I wouldn’t even believe some of the awful things people say to her. I don’t see how any poll could be considered accurate - there’s just too many variables involved. When was the last time a poll accurately predicted a close election outcome? Seems like they’re wrong more often than not, except on the landslide issues.

  32. Greg on November 6th, 2005 at 4:28 pm

The appeal of Kinky Friedman? It isn’t hard to figure out.

    He isn’t Chris Bell.

He isn’t Carol Keeton [INSERT YOUR LAST NAME HERE].

    He isn’t Rick Perry.

What is so difficult to unerstand about that?

  33. jijinmachina on November 10th, 2005 at 10:00 pm

Article: “In any event, I don’t quite understand Friedman’s appeal. He hasn’t expressed any clear agenda…”

Damn media spin. He definitely has a clear agenda on Education, Healthcare, and Energy. See his website (www.kinkyfriedman.com) for more info on those items. Granted they still seem very “sophomoric” but also realize that it’s still a year away from the election. If you look at the way independants normally win in election races, especially the type of voter that Kinky appeals to, he has to first drum up dissension about the two other canidates available to voters and then offer the solution, him. Also remember that he has to do that, all while rasing funds as it seems he will not be running on any party ticket. Which means no money from the Dems, Repubs, or the Libs.

Hope this gets through to some people and he wins. I like his platform so far.
