    Where is Ted?

  2. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 8:48 pm

Thanks by the way, Jeremy….who knows, it might be fun.

  3. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 8:51 pm

Waiting for hurricane related proposal…Gov. Blanco is in the chamber after all.

  4. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 8:54 pm

The “American Competitiveness Initiative” has to start at home. It cannot be legislated.

  5. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 8:58 pm

How juvenile did the Democrats look for lustily applauding when the President said that Congress did nothing with his Social Security reform proposal?

    Very much so.

I am not too happy about his continued focus on this ‘guest worker program’.

  6. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 8:59 pm

Although - I do say let’s bring on the nuclear power.

  7. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:02 pm

I still say sign those Mexican workers up…give them accountability…and tax the hell out of them.

That would be “nuke-you-lar” power, right?

  9. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:04 pm

It seemed short to me. not too much substance.

  10. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:06 pm

    cant wait for the retort…

  11. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 9:11 pm

Yeah - the retort ought to be interesting.

    #8 - it’s “all about” the nuk-you-lar power…

  12. Smacktle on January 31st, 2006 at 9:12 pm

I thought he did OK, but it’s mere hot air until we see some action. At one point Bush was talking
about statitics and he said something along the lines of how violent crime was receding around the country and my wife and I said at the same time “not in Houston!”

  13. phil on January 31st, 2006 at 9:13 pm

Looked like a Herbalife convention. What a bunch of Bull Manure.

The reason they stand up and applaud is because they can’t get enough of giving the you the broom handle as you bend over.

Slick Jorge II is the best president Mexico has ever had.

I said he would not address the border and he didn’t.

One or two lines of the same ole BS of why he continues to violate his Oath and say to heck with the USA’s laws.

I said it once I’ll say it again. Slick Jorge II is a phony and a fraud.

Notice he mentioned two of his dad’s favorite people, himself and Slick Willie I.

So what is the difference between Slick Georgie II and Slick Willie I.

About as much difference between a Rattlesnake and a Cottonmouth.

  14. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:14 pm

cant wait to hear the retort and then turn off the talking heads and see what the LST folks have to say.

  15. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 9:15 pm

Phil - you’re right - he was completely silent on the border, and I am not too happy about that.

I loved the Karl Rove softball though on s.s.

    its the Democrat party dammit!

  18. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 9:18 pm

Ok - here goes. Tim Kaine just suggested that the Federal Government can’t maintain fire, police, and schools. He also just called for tax increases. Good start

  24. phil on January 31st, 2006 at 9:43 pm

I wonder if Slick Jorge II will ever have to deal with this in his neighborhood or at his illegal alien free ranch in Crawford?

Or how about John McCain as he tries to sell his 11,000 sq ft, 18 million dollar mansion in Arizona?

    Bush delivered a well-prepared speech.

I was happy to hear that ’senator’ Sheehan was booked.

I would have liked to have heard more about Iran, but It wasn’t the most important point.

  28. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:48 pm

I can’t really point to any particular part of the address that made me want to stand up and cheer.

  29. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 9:54 pm

“Congress did not act last year on my proposal to save Social Security” I guess that was my personal highlight

    Heh.

12, 31: I had the EXACT same reaction.

  34. Mike S on January 31st, 2006 at 10:54 pm

Why was there no plan mentioned by GW for addressing the greatest threat after the fall of the Taliban to the USA - the nuclear proliferation by A.Q. Khan of Pakistan (as well Pakistan’s general failure to address the very same people who attacked our nation on 9/11 continuing to operate in their nation - one that already has the “bomb for Islam” as Khan put it - with relative inpunity)?

That we are not permitted to question Khan by Pakistan is a travesty, and not addressing that situation directly and forcefully in our policies is a tremendous failure to protect the security of our nation in the wake of OBL’s attack on 9/11.

Did I actually hear GW say that the US is “addicted-to-oil”? I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry…..

  35. Golden Adam on January 31st, 2006 at 11:02 pm

    Zilla is just biased

  36. TexasTommy on January 31st, 2006 at 11:06 pm

I was unable to watch President Bush’s State of the Union address this evening, but did read the transcript. Here are a few initial thoughts….

“…and discouraged by activist courts that try to redefine marriage.”

Wow! During the SOTU, Presidents usually couch such controversial comments in “code words” to targeted constituencies. But with 19 states passing defense of marriage amendments by huge margins and 43 having statutory language to that effect, maybe it is not so controversial afterall.

“Human life is a gift from our Creator - and that gift should never be discarded, devalued, or put up for sale.”

Whoa Nellie! He’s bringing the thunder now! Preach it, brother! I heard some Dems stood after this line. The last two elections have been harsh school masters: cross the President and suffer on election day. I suspect some D’s, deep down, agree with GWB on cloning, marriage, sanctity of life, but have heretofore been cowed by the Dem Kook Base. Now, the wrath of constituents has sharpened their vision, stiffened their spines, and reset them on the straight and narrow (see the Roberts and Alito confirmations). 2002 and 2004 may prove more valuable than we yet realize.

  37. TexasTommy on January 31st, 2006 at 11:10 pm

BTW: Here’s the rest of my post on the SOTU Address.

  38. jimb on January 31st, 2006 at 11:41 pm

I was somewhat disappointed in the speech overall. For example:

We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy - even though this economy could not function without them.

This is hogwash. Nobody in their right mind is saying that immigrands are bad for the economy, they’re saying that illegal immigrants are bad for the economy, security, etc.

And I thought that the One World Government was NOT a conservative idea. Non-intervention is no isolationism.

Can someone compile a list of items spoken by POTUS that can be found in the uS Constitution?

The Republic continues to be dead.

  43. The Dude on February 1st, 2006 at 7:57 am

Well… I missed it last night. It doesn’t sound like I missed much though going by your comments. Particularly troublesome that more attention was not paid to the illegal immigration issue in light of the recent “Mexican army” episode. My wife and I both wrote to Gov. Perry about this, but I’m guessing we’ll be lucky if we even get the old form letter “thank you for your thoughts” back in the mail.

  44. StacyE on February 1st, 2006 at 9:20 am

The immigration thing irritates me. But more than that, with him wanting to keep the tax cuts, I’m not convinced that the over zealous spending that Congress has been enjoying will stop. I know he said something about cutting programs (interested to know what those are) that aren’t performing and cutting the deficit in half by 2009. But I just dont buy it. Cut out the pork!

something has to be done about mexico. states up north don’t think this is an issue because they dont pay for the illegal children to attend their schools so much as the border states do. I just dont think he’s prepared to take on this issue. this will have to be another presidents problem.

  45. Smacktle on February 1st, 2006 at 9:56 am

OK I just wrote a letter to Kay Bailey Hutchison,
telling her that I was not going to vote for her again, because she won’t listen to anybody about
the fair tax http://www.fairtax.org , she’s not doing
anything that I can see about our borders and she’s
is not doing anything that I can see about curbing
    spending.

I’m writing Bush and Cornyn, it might not make a difference, but I gotta do something.

It’s time to send these people a message.

  46. pmartin on February 1st, 2006 at 12:01 pm

Smacktle, I’ve been writing too about fair tax and about illegal immigration. We just have to keep up the pressure. I asked her why Chertoff was so willing to believe the Mexican officials about the “incursions” of the Mexican Army escorting drug runners, while they do not believe our own border patrol, sheriffs who were at the scene. Wonder if she will answer that question.

My Father in Law is Texas representative for the Fair Tax. He said that Kay Bailey Hutchison won’t give them the time of time. I wonder how many lobbyists she willing to see…

  51. JRB on February 1st, 2006 at 12:45 pm

Wahoo!! Dan Patrick for President. He’s more interesting to listen to.

  52. pmartin on February 1st, 2006 at 12:48 pm

    Smacktle,

I went to the fair tax web site and looked at some proposed tax returns. There doesn’t seem to be a return for 2 married people, with one over 65 and receiving social security and a pension and the other still working.

I also do not agree that people below the poverty level should pay no taxes. This will only keep them at the poverty level, and discourage them from bettering themselves. Even if they have to pay $10 they would still be contributing. No more free rides! That is the problem with poverty today, they are awarded for not making much money.

  53. Smacktle on February 1st, 2006 at 1:31 pm

I’m not saying that the Fair Tax is perfect, I’m
still learning about it. Imagine a world without
    the IRS.

Your proposed return would be here:
Find out how your tax return under the FairTax compares to this year’s return. If you don’t see your tax bracket or current circumstance, request them by clicking here.

on that same page at the top.

  54. pmartin on February 1st, 2006 at 3:05 pm

Thanks, Smacktle! I’ll re-check it. How do you feel about what I said about no taxes for below poverty level?

Imagine the world without the IRS? It’s been my dream for sooooo long! Wonder what it would to to tax attorneys and CPA’s?

  55. gregg on February 1st, 2006 at 3:47 pm

There should be a consumption tax. The government has no business knowing what my income is. Wealthy people by expensive things. They would pay more. Poor people by less and would pay less.Drug dealers would have to pay for their Escalades and 26″ rims. If I chose not to buy anything and live in a hole eating what I grow thats my own damn business.

  56. MAV on February 1st, 2006 at 4:59 pm

I have purchased and read the Fair Tax book “”"Fanastic”"”.

It is so good that I could not put it down. The whole thing makes so much sense and is so simple, it only takes 185 pages to say it all and explain what’s wrong with the way the income tax system is now. It explains how good, simple and fair it would be for all Americans. It could easily work and must be pushed. One of the best things about it is that it is fair to everyone and it would stop these politicians from using the tax system to pit American against American, which is terrible practice.

I to am going to send a letter from me, my wife and son to the President, Vice President, both Senators, Congress, Governor and Mayor. While you are sending all of these letters, you may as well include the names of everyone in your household so that they see the big numbers of us who are for this. It’s simple just type one letter; print several to send to all of these politicians. You need to tell every last person you know and even people you just meet. You may not know but this is a bill that is gaining allot of momentum.

Another thing. We all need to not pick apart at this. Like there’s one little thing here that does not sound good or one little thing there that I don’t care much for. Or, oh it will never happen. The point is for the most part its fantastic just the way it is and its great miles better than the insane system we have now. It’s also better than having a flat tax, because a flat tax does not get ride of the IRS and its still based on our income.
Yes this can and will happen if we all keep pushing and keep getting the word out at every opportunity. This is something that I have seen in discussions Democrats and Republicans and independents agree on.

    http://www.fairtax.org Go For it…

  57. MAV on February 1st, 2006 at 5:19 pm

I think the speech was very good. I loved this statement.

“Yet there is a difference between responsible criticism that aims for success, and defeatism that refuses to acknowledge anything but failure. Hindsight alone is not wisdom. And second-guessing is not a strategy”.

I loved how on each point he called everyone to the table on things and where they stood. Things that most Americans would stand up and applaud, most of the Democrats just sat there like idiots.

I think things are going to begin to change on the illegal situation and on getting spending back in line. Because the President and the Republican Senate and House know that the conservative base demand it. It will begin sooner rather than later.

President Bush has done a great job on about 90% of the issues and keeping us safe. Jobs are great, economy is great, and things are getting much better in Iraq. We are winning the war on terror and people all around the world are now GETTING IT. That the terrorists are against all of us in the free world and will go after them and their countries with no problem.

  58. Rahman on February 1st, 2006 at 5:25 pm

Same old stuff devoid of substance.
This is no more than Hollywood version of Academy Awards where unknown actors get their 15 seconds of fame.

    You got it wrong.
Most republicans who stood up again and again looked more like idiots than the democrats.
There was nothing new to applaud, they stood up hoping that may be someday President bush will agree to have a snap shot taken with them.
Classic example of an idiot defination.

  60. Willie on February 1st, 2006 at 7:20 pm

It was a lot of hot air. Same old RNC/Bush White House talking points, regurgitated ad nauseum.
Surely our country can do better than this, can’t we?

  61. Mountainman on February 1st, 2006 at 7:40 pm

#13 - A rattlesnake generally gives you a warning, cottonmouths are quiet, but very, very aggressive. . . Overall I found Jorge’s SOTU address most underwhelming. . . .

  62. gregg on February 1st, 2006 at 7:54 pm

Lets be honest. President Bush read a speech that was written for him by professional speech writers. All Presidents do the same. Nothing wrong with that. But to sit and complain about he should have said this or that,or I’m mad he left out this or that is wasted.

I want to hear ad lib from a Presidents lips his own personal thoughts and solutions not a prepared speech. Whenever GWB is taking questions and has to give an answer its painful to listen to him ramble incoherantly.
