Scalia tells it like it is
by The Panda Man · 02/14/2006 5:14 pmSpeaking at a meeting of the Federalist Society in Puerto Rico, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia had harsh words for those who view the United States Constitution as “flexible.”
PONCE, Puerto Rico — People who believe the Constitution would break if it didn’t change with society are "idiots," U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says.
Since our kind, tolerant, accepting-of-anything friends on the Left will tolerate anything except a conservative, they obviously are not going to like this.
Scalia criticized those who believe in what he called the "living Constitution."
"That’s the argument of flexibility and it goes something like this: The Constitution is over 200 years old and societies change. It has to change with society, like a living organism, or it will become brittle and break. But you would have to be an idiot to believe that," Scalia said. "The Constitution is not a living organism, it is a legal document. It says something and doesn’t say other things."
Such “absolutist thinking” will not do much to lower the blood pressure of the already outraged Bush-hating Left, but thankfully Justice Scalia is not likely to be troubled by such concerns.

I love it when smart people agree with me.
Nice hat tip.
To bad hes the only one that thinks like this.
Bush hating left?
I’m a lefty?
Ouch!
Thank you for stating what _should_ be bloody obvious, Justice Scalia.
Leave the U.S. Constitution alone, do not trifle with it, the founding fathers knew what they were doing.
It is the ONLY THING that will keep us free and independant.
If you allow the DNC, the ACLU, MoveOn.Org, Air America[that's the one with low ratings], George Soros, Hollywood, the treasonous New York Times, Al-Saudi-Gore, or Cindy Sheehan-Chavez to have their way with the “Living Document Theory,” you will be well onto your way to big governement, big brother, and ultra-liberalism while being sucked into the U.N. as a member state, instead of a member country, on our way to total Socialsim / Communism and a one world government.
When this occurs say goodbye to all of your freedoms as you now know them !
Beware in 06 & 08, keep the libs out of office !
The 2d Amendment defends the rest. . . . .
I consider myself a thinking moderate and I agree with Justice Scalia.
If change is required, the founding fathers built a process into the Constitution.
Regrettably, they did not (or maybe did) count on the spineless folks that would populate the congress. It is easier to change the law thru rulings than to put in the hard work to amend the Constitution. Perhaps that was the point!
Simple
One reason why I continue to support Pres. Bush is that I believe the single most important mission he has is to appoint as many judges like Justice Scalia to the bench as possible. I actually believe this is more important than the war on terror. With sane, level headed judges on the bench, America might be able to recover some of its sanity that has been lost over the years. I really believe that Pres. Bush understands the importance of this mission, too. Although we get angry with him at times and over certain issues, we need to give him our support. Every time conservatives try to implement reforms, the libs will challenge it in court. Without good judges sitting, we conservatives will simply be spinning our wheels. No traction. No progress.
