Wow. Words fail me. He must be living in a movie where guns don’t run outta bullets and all cops are skilled enough to shoot bullets out of the bad guy’s hand…

  2. cameraguy on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:08 pm

I sent him an email asking him why he would do such a foolish thing. If a crook was about to kill me, I want the police to shoot the crook in the center of mass, not wing him so he still has time to kill me!

I said he was unfit mentally for the job of state senator and I hope he is voted out soon.

However, he’s been in office since 1985, so he’s not going anywhere. Probably has a 98% black population in his district, so he’s locked in for life…..

I’ll let you know if his staff flames me….

While I agree that this guy sounds pretty stupid, I would add that it would be nice to pass a law requiring police to make sure, before he shoots, that the “threatening” object in a suspect’s hand is actually a weapon, and not a wallet or a coke can or even nothing at all. There were some cases in Houston that I recall from when I lived down there like that.

However, I know that such determinations can be difficult in the heat of the moment, and I know that when an officer makes the decision to shoot, his best bet is to shoot for the center of mass. Obviously this guy does not know these things.

I wonder if this applies when Mr. Patterson is being mugged. Is he going to have to hold that mugger straight so the police can hit the right spot.

What an idiot this guy is. Maybe he should get budget money for bullet proof vest for the criminal so that the police can only hit those exposed spots.

  5. gregg aka"T-Bone" on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:11 pm

I would like to add some things to his bill.

1.Make sure bullet does not hit any tendons or main arteries that will cause perm damage.

2.Make sure bullet hits weak arm or leg.Example. Shoot for left arm on right handed bank robber.

3.If the police officer is white or Hispanic he needs to call for a black officer to shoot at a black suspect. Black officer must sign off and follow above rules. An exception would be if then suspect calls the black officer the “n”word. Then he can shoot to kill. Black officers can shoot at white suspects without calling for a white officer because blacks cant be racist.

4.If black officer isnt available, white officer can shoot suspect but the wound needs to be a grazing one not a direct hit. And only one shot can be fired. Suspect must have a chance to run away from white officer.

5.If white officer misses and hits black suspect and kills him or her,the officer must commit suicide or risk public lynching.

6.Police must let suspect pull his or her gun out before officer can pull his to be fair. Officers have more training and should let the suspects have a chance to shoot first.

These amendments should make the rules fair for everyone including the suspects.

  6. pmartin on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:12 pm

Police do not shoot to kill; police shoot to live. Think about it.

  7. Rorschach on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:13 pm

I suspect that police officers in the State of New York will purposely just put enough bullets in the black ring to “qualify” and let the rest be fliers. that way when they shoot and hit the center of mass and kill the guy (as was really intended) they can claim during the investigation “Hey, I barely qualified to carry the gun, I guess I’m not that such a good shot after all…”

  8. skigib on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:15 pm

What would the penalty be for the officer if he “misses” and kills the criminal? Maybe it would be better if the officer just asked nicely if the criminal would come downtown for questioning. Hell maybe it would jus tbe better if we all just shared fairly with what ever we have and then no one would have to be a criminal.

  9. Matt "Zilla" Bramanti on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:21 pm

Sweet. Maybe the next time I get robbed, the scumbags will hit me on the arm or leg instead of the head.

  10. Ken Kelley on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:30 pm

Yeah, I went radical and sent an email. (I’m sure the state senator from New York is going to pay a lot of attention to email from Texas……)

    short version:
1.> There’s not enough time in a firefight to aim so carefully, and that presumes the criminal is being still.
2.> A criminal down is not necessarily prevented from continuing to shoot.
3.> What’s to prevent a crippled criminal from filing a lawsuit against the state?
4.> Why would a law enforcement officer continue to work for an agency which shackles his ability to protect himself?

My conclusion is that the population of thieves, thugs, and murderers in New York is high enough that it’s important to solicit their votes.

Why don’t you copy your #5 and send it to him? Just for fun!

  12. Butch on February 23rd, 2006 at 4:57 pm

Yeah….the guy’s a moron. Sadly…the bill will probably pass. Lock and load.

  13. BoB2 on February 23rd, 2006 at 5:17 pm

What if, a cop misses the arm or leg.
Where is the round now going to hit?

  14. mizsak on February 23rd, 2006 at 5:21 pm

Reminds me of our past Surgeon General under our former esteemed President Clinton (Ha!), Joycelyn Elders, who made a comment that the gun industry should invent ’safer’ bullets. Both are morons to the nth degree.

I understand that. But why from someone else’s stupidity?

  17. nztexas on February 23rd, 2006 at 6:26 pm

My grandmother taught me that every gun is loaded and if you are going to shoot then shoot to kill because that is what the other guy is going to do. Shoot em in the leg? Why, so the lawyers can sue the police?

  18. publius on February 23rd, 2006 at 6:41 pm

Yes, well, it is New York, is it not?

Right! I am so sick of the politicians caring more for the perp than the victim. Poor perp, he may have to go to jail! Oh, No! Or, horrors of all horrors, he may receive the death penalty. That is so inhuman. What, well, yes, I know he raped, tortured and killed his victim, but golly gee whiz, he was abused as a kid! That should count for something! Poor perp. The victim shouldn’t have been in that place at that time! It only MADE the perp do those crimes!

    Give me a freakin break!

    I third it…(???)

  23. Astrosmith on February 24th, 2006 at 10:48 am

Um, #16, that was a Joycelyn Elders reference…

  24. Cecily on February 24th, 2006 at 1:06 pm

Since it is NY, odds are it will pass. What will be the penalty for not winging the subject? What about if the officer misses completely? Same penalty? These people voted Hillary in as Senator. Wow. Is it the water?

    What a bozo.

  25. Rorschach on February 24th, 2006 at 2:36 pm

#24, The penalty for killing the miscreant is to be the same as second degree manslaughter. the penalty of wounding him? being killed by the bastard.

damned if ya do… damned if ya don’t

  26. z0rkny on February 24th, 2006 at 5:58 pm

I find your criticisms to be a little too short of fact. You haven’t provided the exact language for readers to see this themselves. I hope, and doubt, that Senator patterson wouldn’t write such lame legislation without safety mechanisms and alternative measures for police to resort to.

  27. Rorschach on February 25th, 2006 at 5:57 pm

z0rkny, I haven’t found the text of the bill yet, If I do I will certainly post a link. but the simple fact of the matter is that police, and for that matter CCW permit holders are trained to shoot for the center of mass for two very simple reasons: A) in the heat of the moment it is difficult for most people to aim quite that accurately. and B) so what happens when you shoot him in the leg? he still can kill you.

I have however found this article:

I think it’s a shame nowadays that whenever anyone disagrees with anyone else on an issue they immediately resort to personal attacks. After reading the comments posted on this website, the writers do not impress me as being particularly intellectual.
