A Fag In Your Gob Does Not Spoil Sex

by squawkbox | 03/31/2006 3:48 pm | Alert moderator

The Manchester Evening News, United Kingdom, is reporting Smoking ‘can spoil sex life’.  Men that smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day are 40% more likely to have problems achieving and maintaining an erection compared to men that do not smoke at all.  Penelope from Handforth strongly disagrees.

I don’t agree with this statement, I mean walk around any council estate, and the lad’s who have impregnated many of the local lasses, have a fag hanging out of their gob, if anything it makes them more virile, unfortunately
penelope, Handforth

Thank you Penelope for clearing that up for us.  I will now increase my cigarette consumption to 2 packs a day.

Oh now wait a minute y’all!  You really did not think I was going to say…………….

White rhino dies in Houston Zoo

by Matt Bramanti | 03/31/2006 2:09 pm | Alert moderator

Sorry, but it wasn’t Fred Hill. It was Marci:

Marcibit, a 4,000-pound rhinoceros who had resided at the Houston Zoo since the Nixon administration, died Thursday. She was 38.

A Southern white rhino, Marcibit, or "Marci" as she was known to zoo keepers and visitors, came to Houston in 1971 from the Umfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa at the age of four.

A cause of death is not yet known, and zoo officials expect the results of an autopsy within about a month.

Marci was brought to Houston with a male rhino, Samburu, who was a year younger. The pair never produced any offspring and it is rare for rhinos in captivity to do so.

Marci shunned Samburu’s advances, preferring an illicit love affair.

TAC Flak whips us into line

by David Benzion | 03/31/2006 11:18 am | Alert moderator

Like corporate welfare, the issue of taxpayer-funded lobbying brings together odd couplings of of Left and Right:

A coalition of groups Thursday proposed a statewide ban on government bodies hiring contract lobbyists to pressure the state or federal governments.

[snip]

The groups proposing the ban on lobbyists hired by city, county, school district and state governments were the conservative Americans for Prosperity, the more liberal Public Citizen and the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, CLEAT, a statewide organization of police officers.

The groups said government entities use taxpayer money to pay for lobbyists who sometimes try to pass legislation that is not in the taxpayer’s interests, such as opposing lower caps on annual increases in property appraisals.

Peggy Venable, the Texas director of Americans for Prosperity, said that includes groups that lobby for local governments. Her group is suing the Texas Association of Counties over its lobby activities.

Venable said local government lobbyists most of the time push for legislation that will grow the size of government.

[Hat-tip: Houston Chronicle]

Naturally, TAC disapproves:

Counties association spokeswoman Elna Christopher said Venable wants just anti-government lobbyists influencing public policy.

"If Ms. Venable had her extremist way, there would be no government services," she said.

Oooo Elna, I love it when you talk rough!

Estupido Update

by David Benzion | 03/31/2006 7:00 am | Alert moderator

Completely independent of the merits of the debate, I’m struck by just how mind-numbingly clueless the advocates for illegal aliens / undocumented workers have been over this past week.

Theoretically, the purpose of these protests is to gain public sympathy on behalf of one’s cause. That was part of the brilliance of the 50’s and 60’s civil rights strategy, where activists went out of their way to be clean-cut and well dressed, stressed their belief in and commitment to American ideals, and insisted on a dignified (and sympathy-generating) non-violence.

Compare that with this week’s Mexican vs. American flag debacles.

Here’s another tip– teenagers are inherently melodramatic and inarticulate– not the best messengers to send out into the streets.

Nor, do I think, pictures like these– captured by and courtesy of a Houston Chronicle slide-show (right column of page)– help the cause.

Nothing screams "Welcome Us!" like chanting teenage boys;

But I’m sorry, what do those stickers on your shirts say?

"DRIVE OUT THE BUSH REGIME"

Now there’s a winning message for a protest in Texas!

What a brilliant sympathy-generating strategy.

"Gosh, today is the protest– I think I’ll wear my ‘Scarface’ t-shirt!"

Because the best way to win over the American public is to remind them of a foul-mouthed, coke-snorting, machine-gun wielding Latino immigrant pop-culture icon.

Disgraceful

by Jeremy 'Panda Man' Weidenhof | 03/30/2006 12:45 pm | Alert moderator

An American’s ultimate sacrifice:

Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith

Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq on 4 April 2003. On that day, Sergeant First Class Smith was engaged in the construction of a prisoner of war holding area when his Task Force was violently attacked by a company-sized enemy force. Realizing the vulnerability of over 100 fellow soldiers, Sergeant First Class Smith quickly organized a hasty defense consisting of two platoons of soldiers, one Bradley Fighting Vehicle and three armored personnel carriers. As the fight developed, Sergeant First Class Smith braved hostile enemy fire to personally engage the enemy with hand grenades and anti-tank weapons, and organized the evacuation of three wounded soldiers from an armored personnel carrier struck by a rocket propelled grenade and a 60mm mortar round. Fearing the enemy would overrun their defenses, Sergeant First Class Smith moved under withering enemy fire to man a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a damaged armored personnel carrier. In total disregard for his own life, he maintained his exposed position in order to engage the attacking enemy force. During this action, he was mortally wounded. His courageous actions helped defeat the enemy attack, and resulted in as many as 50 enemy soldiers killed, while allowing the safe withdrawal of numerous wounded soldiers. Sergeant First Class Smith’s extraordinary heroism and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Third Infantry Division “Rock of the Marne,” and the United States Army.

Is this what he fought and died for?

Reagan High School flies Mexican flag

by Owen Courrèges | 03/30/2006 9:43 am | Alert moderator

Not too smart, Bobbie. Not too smart at all:

Say it ain’t so, Principal Bobbie!"

Reagan High School Principal Robert Pambello was ordered to remove a Mexican flag Wednesday morning that he had hoisted below the U.S. and Texas flags that typically fly in front of his school — a symbol he agreed to fly to show support for his predominantly Hispanic student body.

[…]

The Mexican flag has become a lightning rod in the immigration debate that’s consumed the city and the nation this week. Students say the flag represents their pride in the contributions Mexicans make to this country. Critics, though, said watching young Hispanics in the streets with the red, green and white flags is more than they can stand. These youngsters are in the United States and should — at the least — carry the U.S. flag, they argue.

"The whole thing just makes my blood boil," said Bruce R. Wing, a 52-year-old Missouri City resident. "I want them all out of here."

Wing said the Houston Independent School District should fire Pambello.

HISD leaders said no decision has been made about possible discipline against the principal, who declined interview requests Wednesday.

This wasn’t in the barrio, either. Reagan High is right smack in the middle of the Houston Heights. That a principal there would find it appropriate to fly a Mexican flag is not only offensive, but also exhibits a level of stupidity that we should not have to expect from school administrators.

Still, I don’t believe that this scandal ought to make the school any more notorious than it already is, what with Dan Rather having graduated from there and all. However, if students go through with this plan, perhaps it might be time to bulldoze the school and start over:

Some Reagan students said they will try to raise a Mexican flag again today. They said they want it to fly at least above the Texas flag on the pole.

"Just because you’re in the country doesn’t mean you can’t show your culture," said Lewis Ramirez, 16, a sophomore at Reagan High

Geez, haven’t they taught these rugrats not to mess with Texas? It’s like the first thing you’re supposed to know when moving there. For shame!

Senate Passes Lobbying Bill

by squawkbox | 03/30/2006 7:02 am | Alert moderator

These are the headlines that caught my eye.

I have not followed the questions regarding lobbying and Senatorial ethics too closely, so I"ll just agree that something needed to be done. (See important disclaimer below)

US Senate passes lobbying and ethics bill
NDTV.com, India - The US Senate gave lopsided approval to a scandal-inspired legislation restricting lobbyist gift-giving and making lobbying activities more open.

Wow the Senators must have been really serious. There has not been many bills passed lately by a wide margin. It is good to see bipartisan support for something for a change.

Senate Approves Lobbying Limits by Large Margin
New York Times, United States - WASHINGTON, March 29 — The Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed the first major restrictions on lobbying in more than a decade, banning lobbyists from

Uhoh maybe my enthusiasm was a bit premature. Hmmm no wonder there was such bipartisan support.

Senate Passes Pared-Down Lobbying Bill
New York Times, United States- WASHINGTON, The Senate today overwhelmingly passed its first lobbying restrictions in 11 years, but the measure was so pared down that some of the

Somehow the timing of this is not surprising to me. Note the teaser line "how lobbyists sway lawmakers"? You can"t be swayed if you are not willing to be swayed. If it was not for those dastardly lobbyist and all their filthy money, our senators would be as pure as a new fallen snow.

Limited ethics bill approved as lobbyist gets prison time
USA Today - By Jim Drinkard, USA TODAY. WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Wednesday to force greater disclosure of how lobbyists sway lawmakers

This is the headline I trust is the truest of all. The bill is probably just another feel good, election year, "see we did something" bill.

No Reform in Lobbying Reform
Yahoo! News - The Nation — What a coincidence: the Senate is set to wrap up its debate on lobbying reform the same day Jack Abramoff is sentenced in Florida on conspiracy

I love politics.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Put up the flame throwers. I"m Kidding, I"m well aware of Tom Delay"s case and Jack Abramoff"s sentencing for influence peddling etc.

Justice at the Bar

Why lawyers get paid big money:

The man who was behind the wheel that night, Houston plastic surgeon Mark Douglas Gilliland, went on trial Wednesday on two charges of intoxication assault. Harris County prosecutors say his car veered onto a sidewalk and hit the women before Gilliland drove on to his home at a nearby high-rise without calling for help.

His attorney told jurors, however, that the car never left the road and the accident occurred because the two British women had looked the wrong way before stepping into its path.

Although the doctor had consumed wine, vodka martinis and a sleeping pill, "He could’ve been stone cold sober and had this accident," DeGuerin said.

[Emphasis added by LST; hat-tip Houston Chronicle]

I’d need some wine, vodka martinis and sleeping pills myself if I had to tell whoppers like that with a straight face for a living…

Deja Duval all over again

by David Benzion | 03/30/2006 6:41 am | Alert moderator

Courtesy the Associated Press:

Allegations of voter fraud have surfaced in Duval County, where records show one of every two voters who cast a ballot in the Democratic primary did so away from the polls, using the mail.

Longtime county clerk Oscar Garcia Jr. said the number of mail-in ballots in the primary was unusually high in the South Texas county, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

More than half of the 5,641 votes cast were through absentee balloting. That amounts to 2,958 ballots sent by mail, more than all the early voting in the county’s 2004 primary when about 2,800 ballots were cast both in person and by mail.

[snip]

Voter turnout in the March 7 primary in Duval County was among the best in Texas, with 57 percent of registered voters participating.

Sound familiar?

Representative Punches Cop?

by Jeremy 'Panda Man' Weidenhof | 03/29/2006 5:24 pm | Alert moderator

From the Drudge Report:

Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) punched a U.S. Capitol Police officer today after he mistakenly pursued her for failing to pass through a metal detector, HOTLINE reports… The entire incident is on tape. The cop is pressing charges and the USCP are waiting until Congress adjourns to arrest her, a source claims…

If this is true the officer in question will undoubtedly be under pressure to drop the charges. After all, how could anyone expect a politician to go through a metal detector? Doesn’t the officer know that our elected officials are better than everyone else?

UPDATE: Atlanta television backs up the Drudge Report, adding that while Representatives do not normally have to go through metal detectors, McKinney was not recognized by the officer nor did she display any identification.

Sources say that the officer was at a position in the Longworth House Office Building, and did not recognize McKinney, nor saw her credentials as she went around the metal detector.

The officer called out, “Ma’am, Ma’am,” and walked after her in an attempt to stop her. When he caught McKinney, he grabbed her by the arm.

Witnesses say McKinney pulled her arm away, and with her cell phone in hand, punched the officer in the chest.

Background on McKinney:  This 2002 article by Johah Goldberg in National Review amusingly sums up the Representative’s career in recent years.

The Truth is Stranger Than Fiction File

Imagine you are a sculptor. You have decided to make a pro-life statement with the figure of a well known woman in childbirth, honoring the decision not to have an abortion and expressing the natural beauty of the event. Would the image in your mind look anything like this?

"Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston"

NEW YORK — A life-size sculpture of a naked Britney Spears kneeling on a bearskin rug as she gives birth will be on display next month at Brooklyn’s Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery.

It was created by Daniel Edwards, who said he never spoke to the 24-year-old pop star or met her, and fashioned her face and figure from photographs. Edwards said he admires Spears and called the sculpture an idealized figure.

Edwards said the sculpture of Spears was a "new take on pro-life." He said that group normally promotes its views through bloody images of abortion while the sculpture is an image of birth.

Artistic merit aside, the main problem here is that Spears seems a rather unlikely choice for the professed message. The young drama queen and some-time singer, along with her employment-and-hygiene-challenged husband are hardly the poster children for beauty in human reproduction. The tabloid couple seems rather more suited to an abstinence campaign demonstrating the hazards of promiscuity than anything else. And for those with both strong curiosity and stomachs to match, the sculpture is “anatomically correct” all the way around. The work is on display in New York from April 7th through the 23rd.

On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs

by Rorschach | 03/29/2006 2:19 pm | Alert moderator

By LTC(RET) Dave Grossman, RANGER, Ph.D., author of "On Killing."

Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains:

What is worth defending?
What is worth dying for?

What is worth living for?

- William J. Bennett - in a lecture to the United States Naval Academy November 24, 1997 One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: "Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident."

This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another. Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep. I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me, it is like the pretty, blue robin’s egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers, and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful. For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.

"Then there are the wolves," the old war veteran said, "and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy." Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

"Then there are sheepdogs," he went on, "and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf." If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.

Let me expand on this old soldier’s excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that the sheep live in denial, that is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world. They can accept the fact that fires can happen, which is why they want fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, fire alarms and fire exits throughout their kids’ schools. But many of them are outraged at the idea of putting an armed police officer in their kid’s school. Our children are thousands of times more likely to be killed or seriously injured by school violence than fire, but the sheep’s only response to the possibility of violence is denial. The idea of someone coming to kill or harm their child is just too hard, and so they chose the path of denial.

The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, can not and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours. Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports, in camouflage fatigues, holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, "Baa." Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog.

The students, the victims, at Columbine High School were big, tough high school students, and under ordinary circumstances they would not have had the time of day for a police officer. They were not bad kids; they just had nothing to say to a cop. When the school was under attack, however, and SWAT teams were clearing the rooms and hallways, the officers had to physically peel those clinging, sobbing kids off of them. This is how the little lambs feel about their sheepdog when the wolf is at the door.

Look at what happened after September 11, 2001 when the wolf pounded hard on the door. Remember how America, more than ever before, felt differently about their law enforcement officers and military personnel? Remember how many times you heard the word hero? Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed, right along with the young ones.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, "Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes." The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, "Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference." When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into "warriorhood", you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference. There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, but he does have one real advantage. Only one. And that is that he is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population..

There was research conducted a few years ago with individuals convicted of violent crimes. These cons were in prison for serious, predatory crimes of violence: assaults, murders and killing law enforcement officers. The vast majority said that they specifically targeted victims by body language: Slumped walk, passive behavior and lack of awareness. They chose their victims like big cats do in Africa, when they select one out of the herd that is least able to protect itself. Some people may be destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe that most people can choose which one they want to be, and I’m proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.

Seven months after the attack on September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer was honored in his hometown of Cranbury, New Jersey. Todd, as you recall, was the man on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania who called on his cell phone to alert an operator from United Airlines about the hijacking. When he learned of the other three passenger planes that had been used as weapons, Todd dropped his phone and uttered the words, "Let’s roll," which authorities believe was a signal to the other passengers to confront the terrorist hijackers. In one hour, a transformation occurred among the passengers - athletes, business people and parents. — from sheep to sheepdogs and together they fought the wolves, ultimately saving an unknown number of lives on the ground.

There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men. - Edmund Burke- Here is the point I like to emphasize, especially to the thousands of police officers and soldiers I speak to each year. In nature the sheep, real sheep, are born as sheep. Sheepdogs are born that way, and so are wolves. They didn’t have a choice. But you are not a critter. As a human being, you can be whatever you want to be. It is a conscious, moral decision. If you want to be a sheep, then you can be a sheep and that is okay, but you must understand the price you pay. When the wolf comes, you and your loved ones are going to die if there is not a sheepdog there to protect you. If you want to be a wolf, you can be one, but the sheepdogs are going to hunt you down and you will never have rest, safety, trust or love. But if you want to be a sheepdog and walk the warrior’s path, then you must make a conscious and moral decision every day to dedicate, equip and prepare yourself to thrive in that toxic, corrosive moment when the wolf comes knocking at the door.

For example, many police officers carry their weapons in church. They are well concealed in ankle holsters, shoulder holsters or inside-the-belt holsters tucked into the small of their backs. Anytime you go to some form of religious service, there is a very good chance that a police officer in your congregation is carrying a weapon. You will never know if there is such an individual in your place of worship, until the wolf appears to massacre you and your loved ones..

I was training a group of police officers in Texas, and during the break, one officer asked his friend if he carried his weapon in church. The other cop replied, "I will never be caught without my gun in church." I asked why he felt so strongly about this, and he told me about a cop he knew who was at a church massacre in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1999. In that incident, a mentally deranged individual came into the church and opened fire, gunning down fourteen people. He said that officer believed he could have saved every life that day if he had been carrying his gun. His own son was shot, and all he could do was throw himself on the boy’s body and wait to die. That cop looked me in the eye and said, "Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?"

Some individuals would be horrified if they knew this police officer was carrying a weapon in church. They might call him paranoid and would probably scorn him. Yet these same individuals would be enraged and would call for "heads to roll" if they found out that the airbags in their cars were defective, or that the fire extinguisher and fire sprinklers in their kids’ school did not work. They can accept the fact that fires and traffic accidents can happen and that there must be safeguards against them. Their only response to the wolf, though, is denial, and all too often their response to the sheepdog is scorn and disdain. But the sheepdog quietly asks himself, "Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself if your loved ones were attacked and killed, and you had to stand there helplessly because you were unprepared for that day?"

It is denial that turns people into sheep. Sheep are psychologically destroyed by combat because their only defense is denial, which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up. Denial kills you twice.. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: you didn’t bring your gun, you didn’t train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by your fear, helplessness and horror at your moment of truth.

Gavin de Becker puts it like this in "Fear Less", his superb post-9/11 book, which should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with our current world situation: "…denial can be seductive, but it has an insidious side effect. For all the peace of mind deniers think they get by saying it isn’t so, the fall they take when faced with new violence is all the more unsettling." Denial is a save-now-pay-later scheme, a contract written entirely in small print, for in the long run, the denying person knows the truth on some level. And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes. If you are warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be "on" 24/7, for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself…"Baa."

This business of being a sheep or a sheep dog is not a yes-no dichotomy. It is not an all-or-nothing, either-or choice. It is a matter of degrees, a continuum. On one end is an abject, head-in-the-sand-sheep and on the other end is the ultimate warrior. Few people exist completely on one end or the other. Most of us live somewhere in between. Since 9-11 almost everyone in America took a step up that continuum, away from denial. The sheep took a few steps toward accepting and appreciating their warriors, and the warriors started taking their job more seriously. The degree to which you move up that continuum, away from "sheephood" and denial, is the degree to which you and your loved ones will survive, physically and psychologically at your moment of truth.

Barbara Jordan and the Illegal Alien Problem

11 years ago today Barbara Jordan, Chair, U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations and related subcommittees in regards to the growing problem of illegal aliens.  The words of warning and wisdom of that committee were ignored then and it appears that our government today has not learned from the mistakes of the past.

Congresswoman Jordan’s committee in 1995 outlined a 7 point plan to " to make the work of government efficient and in touch with the demands of the American public."  I believe a review of that testimony is warranted today in light of current events.  I also believe that if the Clinton era House and Senate had acted on these recommendations then, we would not be faced with the problems we have now.  I have edited the report for brevity.  The report may be read here.

The Commission’s mandate is to examine and make recommendations to this Congress on the implementation and impact of U.S. immigration policy.  The Commission issued its first interim report in September 1994. In calendar year 1995, we intend to issue three reports with interim recommendations on a range of issues from legal immigration numbers and categories to the handling of migration emergencies and the removal of deportable aliens from the United States. In addition, we continue to pursue our long-term agenda to assess the economic, social, demographic and other impacts of immigration on the United States.

The Commission’s 1994 report to Congress was entitled U.S. Immigration Policy: Restoring Credibility. The title is telling of our recommendations. The Commission believes it is essential to control illegal immigration if we are to have a credible immigration policy. We believe legal immigration is in the national interest, but see illegal immigration as a threat both to our long tradition of immigration and to our commitment to the rule of law.
