I am very thankful for Algore. If it were not for him inventing the internet, we wouldn’t be having this much fun at 4:50 in the morning!

  7. KRAUT on March 1st, 2006 at 4:59 am

Good grief! You are up early.
Hey, did y’all read over @ the Chronicle “Patrick riding high on profile”? The reporter refers to some of us as “a raucous group of taxprotesters”
She isn’t very kind to Dan though and neither are a bunch of other people, I wonder why? Did Dan Patrick step on some toes out there, or what?
This promises to be an exciting election. I don’t know about you, but I’m gonna vote for Dan, even if the reporterette does call him a clown. Yea, Dan used to do some weird things back then. What’s crazy too is that all or most of what she writes about him is probably true, so you can’t say that she’s slamming him. Let the party begin!

  8. KRAUT on March 1st, 2006 at 5:03 am

Malcolm, you are right about algore! he’s the gift that keeps on giving. Hint to LST upper management,

Great idea! This could be the day! Squawk just needs to make it “official”.
I’m with you on getting Dan elected. It will be verrrrrry interesting when the “hen gets in the fox house” instead of the other way around.
The good old boys in Austin do not want Dan to come to their party. They will say and do almost anything to discredit him and they have some willing acomplices in the Comical.
If he ps elected and stays true to his cause, we (the public) will become very enlightened as to the shennagigans(sp) that go on in our state government.

I have long suspected that Ms. Mack writes what she is expected to spin for the editors.

It seems to be headed downhill from what I recall; the political writer before her, John Williams, who was too skilled to waste away at the Komicle and now writes speeches for James Baker, III, and Mr. Bernstien, before Williams, was at times intellectually honest.

Major al-Qaida in Iraq Figure Jailed

Yesterday someone posted a story from WaPo, one of the DLWM papers that reported 10,000 deaths in New Orleans alone during Katrina, that more than 1300 people had dided during the recent sectarian violence. No other news agency is making the same report that I am aware of or have found in my resaerch.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi security forces announced on Monday the capture of a senior al-Qaida in Iraq figure, and the U.S. ambassador said the risk of civil war from last week’s sectarian violence was over
Violence throughout Iraq killed 36 people Monday, as fierce fighting broke out between Iraqi commandos and insurgents southeast of the capital. But sectarian clashes have declined sharply since the bloodletting that followed the destruction of a revered Shiite shrine in Samarra, and Baghdad residents returned to their jobs after three days of a government-imposed curfew.

    snip

The captured al-Qaida figure was identified as Abou al-Farouq, a Syrian who financed and coordinated groups working for Iraq’s most wanted terrorist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, according to an Interior Ministry officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to address the media.

Acting on a tip from residents, members of the Interior Ministry’s Wolf Brigade captured al-Farouq with five other followers of al-Zarqawi near Bakr, about 100 miles west of Baghdad, the ministry said.

The Defense Ministry said Iraqi security forces have killed 35 insurgents and arrested 487 in raids across the country since the bombing last Wednesday of the Samarra shrine.

    Re the Cubans

They are looking for asylum. Most of them apply for citizenship and get it. They generally vote Republican (how else do you think we won Florida?) They lived under Castro and understand what socialism and communism is. That is why they strictly avoid the Democratic party. Remember the little cuban boy who was forcefully forced out of his uncle’s home by Janet Reno’s justice dept and immediately sent back to Cuba? That is just one reason that these cubans will not support the Dems. There is no comparison between the cubans arriving here on boats leaving a dictatorship and Mexican’s leaving their “democratic” country to get here illegally.

The rule regarding Cubans, whcih has been in place since JFK was President, is that if they make it to dry land here in the US, they are accepted as poltical refuges and given asylum. If they are stopped on the water, they get sent back. The folks in question had made it to an abandoned bridge. 40 years ago, we probably would have called that dry land and let them come stay…today it’s a different story.

What is a liberal, environmentalist wacko economist going to do with all this? Then couple that with the data showing conservatives are much happier than liberals, and the news that people who are unhappy are in poorer health and die sooner - which makes conservatives collect social security money that liberals paid but never get to spend.

I tell you, it’s enough to make Rahman think about becoming a Republican!

We come here for political asylum. We come looking for freedom. Most have exhausted the limited diplomatic resources (There is no US embassy in Cuba) not every one has a chance to travel abroad and defect (as have some athletes) Some have served jail time as dissidents and are pretty desperate. For the most part once we get here we are grateful for the opportunity and embrace the US as or country. Most get involved, politically, economically and socially.

  47. BlueSailor on March 1st, 2006 at 1:32 pm

BTW the dry/wet foot issue began being enforced as a deterrent to the hundreds that were risking their life to cross 90 miles of the Gulf Stream in nothing more than inter-tubes. So in the mid 90’s an agreement was reached that Castro would accept those Cubans that were sent back….. yes they are accepted and promptly re-educated in the “glorious struggle of the revolution”

  48. Big45Iron on March 1st, 2006 at 1:35 pm

The Comical likes to point out Dan’s bankruptcy. Let’s look at some other failures who had to file bankruptcy:

Rembrandt Haremenszoon Van Rijn, 1606-1669, the famous Dutch painter, accumulated more debts than he could repay and filed for bankruptcy at the age of 50 in 1656. Jacob Peter Thomasz, a lawyer, supervised the sale of his assets in 1657 and 1658. Many of Rembrandt’s paintings and his house were sold at an auction. After the bankruptcy, he continued to paint but was not allowed to sell his works directly to customers. He was able to circumvent this law by having his son take over his business and sell his paintings.

Phineas Taylor Barnum, 1810-1891, the greatest American showman, filed for bankruptcy in 1871 due to losses he incurred in unwise business ventures. After bankruptcy he organized his famous circus, “The Greatest Show On Earth.” In 1881 he merged his circus with his most successful competitor, James A. Bailey, under the name of Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Mark Twain, (Samuel Langhorne Clemens), 1835-1910, pre-eminent American author, lost most of his money investing in a worthless machine called the Paige Compositor, an automatic typesetting machine. He filed for bankruptcy in 1894 and discharged all his debts, but was determined to repay the debts. He knew he could earn money by giving lectures to large audiences, so he traveled to Europe and spent the next four years lecturing in every major city. He used the proceeds from these lectures to repay all his debts. He also wrote several of his more famous books after filing bankruptcy including Pudd’nhead Wilson and Following the Equator.

Mathew Brady, 1823-1896, distinguished Civil War photographer, filed for bankruptcy in 1872 in Washington, D.C. when, after the Civil War, people lost interest in his work and he became unable to pay his business debts. Three years after he filed for bankruptcy the United Stated War Department agreed to purchase part of his photography collection for $25,000.00. He then reopened his gallery and was successful in attracting new clients for his work.

Henry John Heinz, 1844-1919, condiment manufacturer, started his company in 1869 selling horseradish, pickles, sauerkraut and vinegar. In 1875 the company filed for bankruptcy due to an unexpected bumper harvest which the company could not keep up with and could not meet its payroll obligations. He immediately started a new company and introduced a new condiment, tomato ketchup to the market. This company was, and continues to be, very prosperous.

Milton Snavely Hershey, 1857-1945, founder of Hershey’s chocolate, started four candy companies that failed and filed bankruptcy before starting what is now Hershey’s Foods Corporation. Mr. Hershey had only a 4th grade education, but was certain he could make a good product that the public would want to purchase. His fifth attempt was clearly successful.

Henry Ford, 1863-1947, automobile manufacturer, first two automobile manufacturing companies failed. The first company filed for bankruptcy and the second ended because of a disagreement with his business partner. In June 1903, at the age of 40, he created a third company, the Ford Motor Company with a cash investment of $28,000.00. By July of 1903 the bank balance had dwindled to $223.65, but then Ford sold its first car, and as they say the rest is history.

Wayne Newton, 1942- , Las Vegas entertainer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1992 listing more than $20 million in debt. A few years later he signed a new contract with Stardust Hotel which pays him reportedly over $25 million per year for preforming at the hotel 40 weeks a year for 10 years.

Other notables who filed bankruptcy: Donald Trump, Walt Disney, John Connally,

Anybody who lived thru the Great Depression of the 1920s and 30s, or was in Houston during the 1980s during the oil bust will know that good men sometimes go broke. Many millionaires and billionaires have filed bankruptcy several times in their life before they became great successes.

I’d like to see if Comical reporter Kristen Mack has ever rolled the dice and risked all of his/her money and reputation on a business. I doubt it. Dan has. He fell down. He got up and brushed himself off. He made a success of himself again. That to me is the sign of a great American. In doing all that, because of his values, his family and friends did not abandon him. He’s somebody to be emulated. And liberals like to mock somebody like that, simply because they know they’ll never measure up to that standard.

I agree to a point. But there’s also another way they get involved - criminally.

I’m not limiting it to the Cubans or Mexicans either.

Many don’t pay taxes and use up resources that we pay for.

And socially, many tend to keep it within their own circles. Many don’t even have the desire to learn English these days.

How many freakin’ immigrants is this country obligated to take in?

Very nicely said. What the libs hate is that the Cubans who come here are assimiliating, they choose to learn the English language, they participate in politics, are very conservative and understand American values. That shouldn’t be so hard to see or understand. They value freedom because they know what it is like to be without it.

I use the term “many” and “most” because it is not right to paint everyone with the wide brush of “all” or “none”. I will admit there are many Cubans that are criminals as there are in every society. Catch them and prosecute them. I too have a problem with illegal immigration, I believe that it is wrong, but in the case of immigrants from any oppressed regime, asylum should still be an option. What burns me even more, is those emigrants that come here, yet criticize and want to tear down OUR way of life. Kind of like those that criticize the freedoms that we live under and those who protect those freedoms, which allow them to criticize to begin with….

You and I see alike on the immigration and I have agreed with you almost all the time. But you are comparing apples to oranges. Cubans who come here apply for asylum. They go through all the right steps, for the most part, to become citizens. As for those illegally crossing our southern border, they have no intention of ever assimilating. Maybe BlueSailor would know, but I would be there are more illegals crossing our southern border in one day than there are Cubans seeking asylum in one year.

    (still luv ya, man!!!)

  55. BlueSailor on March 1st, 2006 at 2:27 pm

    54. You are right on the money. Cubans for the most part just want the freedom, nothing else. We find a way to make the American Dream our own, thru hard work and education. There are many others immigrants most illegal and yes even some legal ones that just want to reap the benefits….

I imagine there would be more illegals coming from Cuba if we were connected by land. The struggle over 90 miles of water requires a dedication. Mexican illegals (and don’t forget terrorists) walking over the border have little risk compared to Cubans.

Make it harder to come across the Mexican border, and the true person looking for freedom will apply legally in the same way Cuban asylum seekers are doing.

His silence, like on the border issue, speaks volumes:

Bush didn’t ask a single question during the final government-wide briefing the day before Katrina struck on Aug. 29 but assured soon-to- be-battered state officials: “We are fully prepared.”

    Biggie;

You have wandered inot my very particular area of expertise: The Mexican Punitve Expedition.

Woodrow Wilson was able to send Pershing after Pancho Villa because congress granted him the power to do it.

Villa raided and burned a town 7 miles from the Mexican Border, and got into a battle with a compnay of Cavalry billeted there. Apparently having the Army on the Border back then didn’t work very well, either.

It was a true armed incursion into this country by a force that attacked Military and Civilian targets inside the United Staes. But Wilson STILL had to get Congresses permission to send troops south of the Border. The Resolution passed by Congress gave a very specific Mission: kill or Capture Pancho Villa or render him powereless to raid into the US. The never caught him, but were successful in rendering his forces impotent and he was never held the same kind power in Mexico again.

The troops that were on the Border at that time had been there historicaly to prevent armed incursions by Indians, Commanche on the Texas Border and Apache along the Border with Arizona and New Mexico. By the turn of the century they had been for the most part withdrawn, except at a few scattered forts, primarily Forts Brown and Bliss, and Huachuca with satellite forts between each.

When Mexico erupted into Revolutionmore troops wer moved south, primarily into Fort Sam Houston, but were not statined on the Border until 1915 during a period know as “Plan San Diego,” which involved a few Mexicans and Tejanos engagin in an armed inssurection herd in Texas. They operated from across the Border and raided trains, villages, water pumping stations, and ranched along the border. When the raided an outpost of the King Ranch and at the same time overturned a train, troops were sent to the Lower Rio Grande. The Insurrection was not quelled, however, until the Texas Rangers got involved and dispensed Frontier Justice, becasue even back then, Federal Troops could not be used to enforce civilian law.

After Pershing entered Mexico, there were some clashes with Mexican troops as well as Villistas and Congress authorized Federalizing of the National Guard and 100,000 troops were sent to the Border as there was a very real possbility of War with Mexico..and the Germans were more than willing to move that process along to keep the US out of the war in Europe.

I’ve studied the Puntice Expedition, Plan San Diego, and the National Guard Border Service for about 10 years. I own about 60 books on the subject, some of them rare editions by those who participated. this is why I am so familiar with the limitations of the military on the border, especially where it comes to enforcing civilian law, as well as the requirements for sending the National Guard.

    I ain’t making this stuff up…….

Read the article Shakey posted yesterday. Teh Corps of Engineers has given a contract to Halliburton to build new Detention Centers and to refurbish unused portions of military bases as places to keep illegals arrested while waiting for a hearing before an Immigration judge. it won;t techically “end” until they are complete.

Bush redirected funds given him by Congress to hire 2000 border agents in order to buoild these detention centers. His reason ing was that hiring 2000 more agents just ot arrest people we’d have to let go didn’t make much sense, and that the Detention Centers needed to be built first.

It made sense to me when I heard him say he did it about 6 months ago, but some people didn’t hear about it over their own voices telling him to do someting.

    Her’s the article Dan;

You’ll notice the people who don;t like that it’s happening as some you’ve sent us pictures of picketing you at Minuteman meetings:

Advocates for immigrants said they feared that the new contract was another indication that the government planned to expand the detention of illegal immigrants, including those seeking asylum.

“It’s pretty obvious that the intent of the government is to detain more and more people and to expedite their removal,” said Cheryl Little, executive director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center in Miami.

I know — I’m eeeeevvvvvvviiiillll and must be destroyed!

  103. sargevining on March 1st, 2006 at 6:21 pm

    Now, Dan;

It’s Congresses turn. They need to fund the hiring of more Immigration Judges so that we can speed up the process of sending those we arrest back home instead of letting them go, and more detention centers now that Bush has used all the money they gave him last year to build these.

The best thing to keep OTMs out of this country is to have abunch of them show up back home with empty pockets after having spent thier last dime trying to get to this country, only to be sent back.

It;s not a total solution, but it IS a start.

You need to go back and read the article Big45 posted and how it relates to the media.

Having said that, it was the local government and the state government who had to act first. Federal government could NOT enter Louisiana without the approval of the Governor. The governor, although Bush pleaded with her, would not let the feds in. She told him to give her another day and look what’s happened.

Frankly, I am sick to death of Katrina and New Orleans “victims” No where else in the country do you hear such pathetic whining. Mississippi, Alabama, Western Louisiana, and Texas were shattered by hurricanes. Are we whining and moaning that the federal government has not done enough? No! Florida got hit 3 or 4 times with hurricanes, but its governor, Jeb Bush, knew when to call in the feds.

Why is it that we neveer saw any of the devestation of Mississippi? Because NO was in the limelight! Just perfect for the DLWM!

Look at all the cars in NO that were flooded. Why didn’t people flee in them? Because they have been on the dole for so long, they can’t do a damn thing for themselves.

  109. JeffJ on March 1st, 2006 at 6:52 pm

Ms. Zuieback said the KBR contract was not intended for that.

Jeff, its because the NO crybabies are black. The MSM and the left are pandering to this base.

You can sit in your nice warm house and talk about how independant you are. But I bet if you were of little means and your house and job got blown away you would be in a gov line complaining about how you paid taxes all these years and now you want some help from the gov.

These people took a hell of a hit but the problem is they have never learned to help themselves and they rely on government to make them whole again. You and I know gov is not good at that. These people look at the gov as their daddy.
