  1. The Dude on May 1st, 2006 at 10:57 am

At my job, all the usual suspects appear to be here. At my wife’s, however, two people called off. One of the two is married to an illegal and was running around Friday spouting off about how he wasn’t coming to work Monday. The other is an avowed liberal. That one may be legitimately sick, I don’t know. I guess you have to extend the benefit of the doubt there, but the timing seems a little funny.

I’m glad I’m not in the position of having to decide what to do about it. It pisses me off nonetheless; especially the one who I know is married to the illegal.

Overall though, I think this whole thing May Day thing will backfire. Good moneyquote from a NR article:

The illegal-alien marches resemble the Vietnam protests in another way—they’re backfiring. Just as the antiwar movement’s hatred of America caused a backlash that prolonged the war, the illegal-alien marches are hardening attitudes against illegals. A recent poll shows that the earlier marches made respondents less likely, by two-to-one, to be sympathetic to amnesty. The illegal-alien anthem has been denounced by President Bush (of all people), and a resolution is likely to be introduced today by Sen. Lamar Alexander affirming that “that statements or songs that symbolize the unity of the American Nation, including the National Anthem, the Oath of Allegiance sworn by new U.S. citizens, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States, should be recited or sung in the common language of the United States: English.” (I boldly predict this will be approved.)

Why don’t they call it what it is? “A DAY WITHOUT ILLEGAL ALIENS” is more correct. All of the Taquiera Arandas restaurants are allowing their employees time off to participate in demonstrations and they are closing early after serving lunch. They’ve proven their loyalty to me. I’ll never grace their doors again.

  3. johnny833 on May 1st, 2006 at 11:14 am

I’ve been checking into different companies that hire illegals and are taking the day off or allowing folks the day off. Not planing on ever buying or patronizing them again if I can help it. So long Tyson foods, Cargill, etc.

Because they would be arrested and incarcerated or just arrested and shot.

  6. Robert on May 1st, 2006 at 11:26 am

Massive protests doesn’t make it legal. Laws make it legal. The protestor’s are demanding rights that are not guranteed to them under the US Constitution. Those rights are for citizens of this country who came in LEGALLY. With that said, my answer is best explained in my humorous approach thru my “Top Ten” captions list:

    1) Okay gringos, we will boycotting the ER rooms and welfare offices today.

    2) Okay, gringos, see how you do without crime, drugs and gang activity during our boycott.

    3) Vicente Fox sent us here to reclaim this land for Mexico.

    4) Yeah!!! We boycotted those TAKS test, too. We don’t need no stinkin’ education.

    5) We demand our noontime siestas!!!!

    6) What does this “illegal” mean, it doesn’t translate in Tex-Mex??

    7) They told us everything was free here. So which line do I get in???

    8) Okay, you lazy gringos are going to have to cut your own grass.

    9) Do you know where I can get some Mexican flags?

    10) Yeah!! The pinto bean can be a producer of alternative fuels!!!

    I hope everyone enjoys these.

  7. mizsak on May 1st, 2006 at 11:27 am

I would like a list posted of all companies I can boycott in the future that are basically boycotting the taxpaying public by their stance on this issue.

I made up my mind yesterday never again to shop at Walmart after I heard the in-store announcements in Spanish. If they want to cater to only one segment of the population, I will go elsewhere.

  8. The Deacon on May 1st, 2006 at 11:27 am

My wife reported much less traffic this morning on the NW side. I peronally don’t think one day is enough. I’d like to see one YEAR without the illegals!

  9. navymom on May 1st, 2006 at 11:27 am

My husband’s employer, which is a LARGE construction contractor, sent out a letter from the President of the company, (in English AND Spanish, of course) to let employees know that it was OK to take off on Monday to participate in the May Day protest. That just annoyed the hell out of me. Where are the employer’s BALLS these days? Even if you fired them all, there would be plenty of replacement Mexicans available!!! Why are we letting them try to tell US what to do???? AAARRRGGGHHHH

I TOTALLY enjoyed my trip via FM 249 this morning going to work. It wasn’t clogged with trucks pulling landscape trailers, construction equipment and 20 people riding in the back, each truck riding abreast of each other across all lanes of traffic going 40 mph, starting in the left hand lane all the way to the right! Dang that makes me mad!

  15. klayman on May 1st, 2006 at 12:01 pm

I had my usual breakfast at Taca Cabana, and not only were the usual people there, the line was long. Walgrees looked liked business as usual, as did the gas stations. The parking lot at the 99 cent store looked empty though

  16. Vic on May 1st, 2006 at 12:03 pm

The talk is tough, as usual here, but, I’m willing to bet that if I ask the crowd in six months if they’ve been back to a wal-mart or a Taquerias Arandas, the answer will be yes!

And I’d also bet that no law making it a felony for being here will be passed.

So, enjoy the tough talk just as much as the immigrants are enjoying their proverbial day in the sun, then let’s see what happens in 6 months.

  18. klayman on May 1st, 2006 at 12:07 pm

I am in favor of boycoting establishments which allowed their employees to miss work and participate. Can this site assist in compillling a list and make it available? Can we organize “A day without a taxpayer” and for one day subsidize nothing. No emergency room, no welfare checks, no social programs… nothing.

    1) Barcenas’ Mexican Restaurant is owned and operated by Americans of Mexican heritage. They will not close or support this mexican movement. I plan on supporting them. Me and my family are going there after work today.

They have two restaurants. One located at 2200 W. Bay Area Blvd. (Just west of Bay Brook Mall) and the other at 8504 Almeda Genor Rd. in Houston.

    2) Sure loved the drive in this morning. No crazy mexicans on beatup trucks on the road.

Don’t you have any other sites to bother? or blog? Like I once told another commenter, Tejano, I socialize and patronize with people who are like-minded. If I don’t like somebody or their way of thinking or behaving, I don’t go around them and avoid them if at all possible. I can’t convince a liberal no more than you can convince a conservative. There are many liberal blogs out there. Go join them. You won’t find me on any of them.

We just got back from a hearty lunch at Natalita’s Mexican restaurant in the Jersey Village area. They seemed to be a little short of busboys and had somebody new manning the cash register, but otherwise seemed fully staffed and were handling a normal (full room) lunch crowd. We did hear some other patrons talking about their “usual” place being closed when they got there, with “the doors locked and the chairs all up on the tables,” but I never heard which restaurant that was. Wherever it was, I think they just lost some regular customers.

My friend who LEGALLY came over from Juarez, Mexico 30 years ago is one of the more peeved people I’ve spoken to about this issue. It makes his family sick to see others demanding what his family worked so hard to achieve. The other thing he’s disgusted with is how they aren’t proud to want to become American (culture, etc.). A retired border patrol agent’s letter………………….

    Dear Senator Frist:

There is a huge amount of propaganda and myths circulating about illegal aliens, particularly illegal Mexican, Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran aliens.

    1. Illegal aliens generally do NOT want U.S. citizenship. Americans are very vain thinking that everybody in the world wants to be a U.S. citizen. Mexicans, and other nationalities want to remain citizens of their home countries while obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment, medical care, in-state tuition, government subsidized housing and free education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American residence without paying the price.

    2. There are no jobs that Americans won’t do. Illegal aliens are doing jobs that Americans can’t take and still support their families. Illegal aliens take low wage jobs, live dozens in a single residence home, share expenses and send money to their home country. There are no jobs that Americans won’t do for a decent wage.

    3. Every person who illegally entered this nation left a home. They are NOT homeless and they are NOT Americans. Some left jobs in their home countries. They come to send money to their real home as evidenced by the more than 20 billion dollars sent out of the country each year by illegal aliens. These illegal aliens knowingly and willfully entered this nation in violation of the law and therefore assumed the risk of detection and deportation. Those who brought their alien children assumed the responsibility and risk on behalf of their children.

    4. Illegal aliens are NOT critical to the economy. Illegal aliens constitute less than 5% of the workforce. However, they reduce wages and benefits for lawful U.S. residents.

    5. This is NOT an immigrant nation. There are 280 million native born Americans. While it is true that this nation was settled and founded by immigrants (legal immigrants), it is also true that there is not a nation on this planet that was not settled by immigrants at one time or another.

    6. The United States is welcoming to legal immigrants. Illegal aliens are not immigrants by definition. The U.S. accepts more lawful immigrants every year than the rest of the world combined.

    7. There is no such thing as the “Hispanic vote”. Hispanics are white, brown, black and every shade in between. Hispanics are Republicans, Democrats, Anarchists, Communists, Marxists and Independents. The so-called “Hispanic vote” is a myth. Pandering to illegal aliens to get the Hispanic vote is a dead end.

    8. Mexico is NOT a friend of the United States. Since 1848 Mexicans have resented the United States. During World War I Mexico allowed German Spies to operate freely in Mexico to spy on the U.S. During World War II Mexico allowed the Axis powers to spy on the U.S. from Mexico. During the Cold War Mexico allowed spies hostile to the U.S. to operate freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 was cheered and applauded all across Mexico. Today Mexican school children are taught that the U.S. stole California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. If you don’t believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for their schoolchildren.

    9. Although some illegal aliens enter this country for a better life, there are 6 billion people on this planet. At least 1 billion of those live on less than one dollar a day. If wanting a better life is a valid excuse to break the law and sneak into America, then let’s allow those one billion to come to America and we’ll turn the USA into a Third World nation overnight. Besides, there are 280 million native born Americans who want a better life. I’ll bet Bill Gates and Donald Trump want a better life. When will the USA lifeboat be full? Since when is wanting a better life a good reason to trash another nation?

    10. There is a labor shortage in this country. This is a lie. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of American housewives, senior citizens, students, unemployed and underemployed who would gladly take jobs at a decent wage.

    11. It is racist to want secure borders. What is racist about wanting secure borders and a secure America? What is racist about not wanting people to sneak into America and steal benefits we have set aside for legal aliens, senior citizens, children and other legal residents? What is it about race that entitles people to violate our laws, steal identities, and take the American Dream without paying the price?

For about four decades American politicians have refused to secure our borders and look after the welfare of middle class Americans. These politicians have been of both parties. A huge debt to American society has resulted. This debt will be satisfied and the interest will be high. There has already been riots in the streets by illegal aliens and their supporters. There will be more. You, as a politician, have a choice to offend the illegal aliens who have stolen into this country and demanded the rights afforded to U.S. citizens or to offend those of us who are stakeholders in this country. The interest will be steep either way. There will be civil unrest. There will be a reckoning. Do you have the courage to do what is right for America? Or, will you bow to the wants and needs of those who don’t even have the right to remain here?

There will be a reckoning. It will come in November of this year, again in 2008 and yet again in 2010.

We will not allow America to be stolen by third world agitators and thieves.

I have found a way to increase the federal budget and decrease the outpouring of American dollars:
establish a 10% federal tax on all money being sent out of the US: Western Union, MoneyGram, etc. If they are being wired to a location outside the US, a 10% federal tax should be imposed. Perhaps the states should get involved as well and impose their own tax. The money should be used to pay for services to the illegals: emergency rooms and hospitals, education (although they have enough money, just need to use it more wisely), welfare, etc

The #1 in his letter is absolutely right. Illegals do not want to assimilate into this culture. They want to retain their culture and they don’t want to be citizens. They just want to be able to live here, work and send all their money to their home countries while raping our country in the process.

So far, it has been very nice today. I work in the Galleria around all the construction and didn’t see any construction workers (except white males) on the job today.

I think this protest is going to blow up in their faces when people realize how little we need illegals. Too bad they won’t protest for a month or two or a year or two!

I am really frustrated with the hispanics who refuse to assimulate. They will not speak english, they move into our neighborhoods and turn nice homes into hovels with thier 15 “cousins” and thier kids who refuse to speak english. They drove like they WANT to kill someone and when YOU get hit by one they run!

The jobs they hold, really now - how many teens and college kids would love to have those jobs. My daughter learned spanish during the 4 years she worked at a burger joint! Its time they LEARN ENGLISH!

Happy Mujado Day…. So far So good! I’ve been very productive without any Mujados here…..

Why can’t 12+ million Mexicans march in Mexico? They would scare the bejeesus out of V Fox…. Or they’d be gunned down in the streets… either way, it would happen there and they would be standing up for THEIR country, not demanding something that is not theirs. The Chron had an artlcle on Sunday where they stated that the protesters also wanted to be counted in the middle class… Heck, let’s give them all H3 Hummers and houses in the Woodlands……

As far as Vic and Tejano… if living here and waiting tables and mowing lawns gives them the right to be American citizens, how’s about me and a coulple of people bring a lawnmower and a BBQ grill to your house, that would entitle us to move in (using your “Traditoinal Rebublican” logic). You supply the gas and meat for the grill and we would mow and cook for ya and take over the place? Of course you would have to buy my clothes and pay my car note. After a while I could move my wife and kids in. Then my brother in law could come and my brother Larry too……

I also wonder, if so many took off, are they so lazy that only a fraction of that made it to the so-called rallies? There seems to be a huge differential between those off from work and those attending the rallies.

53 Neo, #1 is exactly right. They don’t really want to leave their culture, their families, they just have a desire for a better life and they get off their duffs and come here and work their asses off and do it.

So, according to you, we have to learn to speak and write in Espanol? So tell me, then why should Mr. Benzion position you with fonts in Spanish? Because you say we are going to the dogs anyway. Should be the least of your worries what fonts are afforded you.

    24 Buddy,

Well, I’ve been chastised here many times for many reasons, but, never for agreeing completely with George W. It’s funny to be called a liberal for agreeing with the approach that this current President also advocates.

34 Neo, Just posting my point of view, which apparently doesn’t jibe with yours. I just can’t bring myself to get worked up over nothing, mad at a bunch of hardworking people aspiring to the american dream.

53 Neo, #1 is exactly right. They don’t really want to leave their culture, their families, they just have a desire for a better life and they get off their duffs and come here and work their asses off and do it. Plus I think it’s absurd to make them Fellons (which is the real reason they are protesting). If we make them all fellons (sp?), where are we going to put them? How are we going to pay for it? It’s just a stupid solution.

The real solution is to make a guest worker program so that they can come here, work, pay taxes, and then go back home to their families.

I guess that is the major difference between us Vic. Most of us do not consider entering, living in, and working in America illegally to be “nothing”. Your opinion on this sounds anything but conservative, as you claim to be.

    Dude,

You all (or neo at least) thinks that I am trolling on this issue, but, my position is exactly the same as the Presidents (which, I’ll have to say is unusual).

You all, for some unknown reason, have arrived at the conclusion that these people are all just sucking the life out of our society and do nothing, where I see that they work hard.

I don’t like the fact that they are here illegally either, but, if you were in the same situation, would you sit on your but and take it? No, if you are the kind of person that I think you are you would do exactly what these people are doing. You wouldn’t sit around and wait on some idiotic beauracracy, you get out and “get ‘er done”.

That’s what I (adn the Prez) think. Change the idiotic beauracracy, find a way to set up willing employees with willing employers, tax them, then let them go home and come again later.

There is no reason to hate these people just because they are looking for opportunity.

  83. The Dude on May 1st, 2006 at 4:38 pm

    Vic,

I don’t think you’re trolling. I’ve seen your position on this and I see it hasn’t changed. We simply disagree on that position.

As you say, I wouldn’t wait around for some beauracracy to accomplish something. On that I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have no hate in my heart for illegal immigrants.

The group I find fault with is our politicians. They’ve refused to enforce laws which already exist. For that I have nothing but utter contempt. I couldn’t disagree with GWB more vehemently on this issue.

You’re trying to equate our anger over having our laws violated with hate. That, my friend, is not hate. At its roots is a fundamental sadness at seeing our leaders do nothing while millions of people stream into America illegally.

BTW, I haven’t said they were “sucking the life out of our society”. What I did do is point out to you a study where it was shown that illegal immigrants cost this country more than they benefit us. To that, I’ve never received a satisfactory response from anyone who supports illegal immigration.

  88. Vic on May 1st, 2006 at 5:00 pm

    Dude,

My bomb throwing comment wasn’t aimed at you, in case you were wondering.

The fact is, I didn’t read your study, but, once again am not motivated by whatever anyone says about this b/c I believe the market. Capitalism is a wonderful thing that way in that it tends to work out what’s “worth it” and what’s not.

So, your study can say one thing and an article on CNN can state another and the “bias” card can be played, but, at the end of the day, I think it wouldn’t be continuing and growing if it was “good” for the economy or at least “good” economically.

You all are angry b/c people are “breaking the law”, and, my position is that we should change the law and not condemn people who, for the most part, are only doing what most of us would do in their place.

So, yeah, be mad at your politicians, but, go drink a Margarita at your old favorite restaurant. Take RightWing Sparkle with you, sounds like she’d like to get out. Talk to the people that work there, get to know them. They probably have wifes, kids, dogs, problems, successes, and a whole lot more things that are JUST LIKE YOU.

    Flygal #52,

The banking/financial industry will not allow any govt. to pass such a tax at a federal level. Why do you think illegal immigration is not being addressed? The 3 largest banks in Mexico are owned by US banks (JP Morgan, Citigroup, Bank of America).

Follow Reagan’s amnesty program in the 80’s in relation to the Mexican peso collapse and our bailout program to save the Mexican economy. I believed the bail out was voted down.

So, here we are two decades later dealing with the problem. I guess amnesty worked. Hahahaha!!!!

I am not a conspiracy theorist but the argument for the Military Industrial Complex is looking stronger than ever in these past eight years.

Long gone are the days of the two party system in American politics.

    Hmmmm.

No earnings for financial institutions nor guvmint programs? We cannot have that. Keep taxes high, deduct taxes from paychecks, make it hard for teenagers to be able to work for a paycheck and then complain that have a shortage of labor.

  92. joebexar on May 1st, 2006 at 5:50 pm

    #91

    I hear you but…

You cannot believe that the banking business is going to give up an estimated $20bn a year going to banks in Mexico they already own.

You cannot believe that Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Home Depot, and other companies that benefit from illegal immigration are willing to give up an unlimited supply of cheap labor.

You cannot believe that the American labor unions are going to favor anything other than a guest worker program in order to swell their membership.

Until the system removes incentives that encourage illegal immigration, then it will continue. It does not matter who is in Washington.

You think any elected official won’t cave to the banking, corporate, or labor union pressure groups if they squawk loud enough?

I have to say I enjoyed the day because we didn’t have the lawn people at work to blow the leaves and trash all over our cars. I guess I can look forward to that tomorrow.

As far as the other comments, I think one of the biggest issues other than the fact these these people are ILLEGAL they refuse to assimilate to our culture. I wish they would do away with bilingual education. The only way my kids can learn Spanish is if I pay $60 for each one and they stay after school. Why can illegal kids be taught in Spanish for free?? I think it’s a load of cr** to say they just want a better life. If that were true, they they would learn English and follow the law like we do. If this passes and they all get a free ride, I think I will write my congressman and tell him that I want a free ride from speeding tickets. That’s breaking the law too, but I want a better life which means driving fast to me.

Our elected leaders have decided to ignore the will of the people (actual citizens) in their quest for the “potential” Hispanic vote. They will get away with this if we continue to re-elect them. This goes for both Republicans and Democrats alike. We can complain all we want about illegal immigration, but nothing of substance will emerge from Congress or the White House as long as the current members retain their seats. Follow the votes of your elected rep and senators and hold them accountable come November. This is the only remedy to the illness of illegal immigration.

  102. DanielJames on May 1st, 2006 at 7:55 pm

I wonder if I was the only one that went to the rally to see what it was all about?

Many US flags…Many mexicans flags. The numbers appeared to be about 500. I saw a number of ambulances. It seemed that many dropped due to the heat. I saw a baby being loaded into an ambulance. Likely heat related. When the crowds saw me flying the US with the Texas flag I was yelled at. I got the machismo and some very nasty looks. For what? I am an American in the streets of America. I asked one man what would happen if he saw 1000 gringos flying the US flag in Mexico..he laughed but never answered.

I wonder how many more poor, uneducated people we can really sustain before the US is exactly like mexico?

    Shame on our government.

  103. NAT PIERCE on May 1st, 2006 at 7:56 pm

Asking the Federal government for help is the act of surrendering our States sovereignty.
Anytime the Fed helps it evolves into a huge inefficient bureaucrat money consuming machine.

If you like the way the inner loop Katy and the Katy at beltway 8 sheds water during a gullywasher you want the Feds.

If you think FEMA/Katrina help was efficient and effective you want Federal help.

If you love the process you’ll love the Feds.

Persons coming into Texas from our southern border are not a problem for the Feds., they are our problem.

We have the resources and authority to deal with our southern border.
What we need is the will.

Another close Villaraigosa friend and ally has been Mario Obledo, co-founder of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), who was awarded the 1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton.

“California is going to be a Hispanic state,” Mario Obledo has proclaimed, “and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave. They should go back to Europe.” (Does this refer to the Europe that includes Spain and the Spanish language?) http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=22275

    Vic,

So, yeah, be mad at your politicians, but, go drink a Margarita at your old favorite restaurant. Take RightWing Sparkle with you, sounds like she’d like to get out. Talk to the people that work there, get to know them. They probably have wifes, kids, dogs, problems, successes, and a whole lot more things that are JUST LIKE YOU.

The fact of the matter is we have done that. There is a family owned Mexican restaraunt that my family eats at pretty regularly. When you tell me they are “JUST LIKE YOU” you’re preaching to the choir. They are just like me in that they are legal American citizens. The owner of the restaraunt has been very kind to us through the birth of my daughter, and, in turn, the birth of her youngest daughter. You seem to be trying to paint anyone who has a problem with illegal immigration as racist. As I’ve said before, some of the most adamant anti-illegal opinion I’ve heard comes from people of Hispanic descent.

BTW, I know the bomb comment wasn’t directed at me. I had the, ummm, pleasure of reading a couple of those deleted comments before they were deleted. Oh, another BTW… I’m not real enthused about Margaritas. That’s more Mrs. Dude’s drink of choice. Truth be told, I’d much rather a cold Bohemia or Negro Modello.

I know we’ll probably never really see eye to eye on this, so I’ll try to refrain from this argument in the future unless I have something new to say. A while back, you made a comment about me thinking your presence on this blog is important. I don’t know if I ever answered you directly on that one, but the short answer is yes. Despite our disagreement on this subject, you’ve always argued with me respectfully; and I respect you for that.

Something else I just thought of - Should EVERY employer fire those who did not show up to work because they were participating in the protest? If the answer is YES - then would it be O.K. to hire the other protesters that were terminated from their place of employment?

    Yes? No?

Either way - Aren’t we still going to be supporting the protesters no matter what business we decide to boycott or support?????
