Sure, American kids can’t find Iraq on a map, but who cares, as long as the menace of sugar stalks the halls of the nation’s schools? Fortunately, Bill Clinton is on the job:
In a deal announced today by the William J. Clinton Foundation, the nation’s largest beverage distributors agreed to stop selling non-diet sodas to most public schools, where childhood obesity has become an increasing concern."This is a bold step forward in the struggle to help 35 million young people lead healthier lives,” former President Clinton said at a news conference. "This one policy can add years and years and years to the lives of a very large number of young people.”
And of course, just to remind you that this is the Chronicle, there’s a stupid error:
Finding a soft drinking in Texas schools is already difficult under rules imposed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
I prefer hard drinking, myself.

I remember a few years ago I was working a project at one of Houstons inner city schools. That’s code for poor black and Mexican kids. Anyway,I remember seeing the soda machines all encased in steel bar framing. All you could really see was the choice buttons, coin slot and the chute the cans came out of. They were bolted and chained to the wall as well. This is what they had to do when the soda was available to the kids. Imagine what those kids will do when they see the machines have been taken away. They will really be pissed.
I guess the schools will need to fortify the water cooler now.
Naw. They’ll just bring their own soft drinks, etc. in their backpacks.
Another “former” Guv-mint official with a feel good idea that won’t do a thing to keep the kids from getting their sugar fix or drinking soft drinks. If they don’t get one at school, they’ll drink two on the way home. Ludicrus!
But their are a lot of folks out there who are thinking “Bill still cares about our children!”
What a bunch of BS!
I’m sure the soccer moms are swooning all across the country right now.
first peanut butter - not soda
wow! we are protecting our kids
Hmmm non diet sodas? I wonder if the aspertain(?) in the diet soda gives the little ones the same headaches it gives me?
gawwwuuuudddduhhh I love political correctness.
Well, at least they still allow crack at school.
Did anybody notice the agreement applies only to junior high and elementary schools?
If a space alien were to observe students of the high school at which I substitute teach, they would conclude the purpose of attending school was to worship the vending machines!
Kamikazes and koolaid for the zilla.
