Have you shared your $.02-cents with the Gov.?
by David Benzion · 06/16/2006 6:49 amCourtesy today’s San Antonio Express-News:
Some longtime Texas Republicans are expressing displeasure with Gov. Rick Perry by literally giving him their 2 cents’ worth in campaign contributions.
More than a dozen have opened their checkbooks to make contributions of less than a nickel and in some cases, only a penny.
They want their small donations to make a big statement.
"The whole country is waking up. I really think there’s going to be a revolution because people are sick and tired," Mary Bean of Rosenberg said. "People are sick and tired of all this bickering and not getting a damn thing done."
Perry did push a school funding reform bill through the Legislature last month that kept the Texas Supreme Court from closing public schools after June 1. But some of Perry’s fellow Republicans are miffed he supported a new business tax to make it happen.
"I was really mad that he started this new business tax," Bean said after sending a contribution check for 1 cent.
A lifelong Republican, Bean said she’ll vote for maverick independent Kinky Friedman.
Here’s the funny part.
Perry’s latest campaign contribution report filed this week listed 15 Houston-area donors who gave 5 cents or less. Some said they got the idea from radio talk show host Edd Hendee, who is part of KSEV’s lineup. The station owner is Dan Patrick, who also has fired up listeners against the governor’s school and tax reform plan. Patrick won the GOP nomination this spring for a Houston-area state Senate seat.
Perry’s campaign put the best possible spin on the unusual political contributions.
"The governor appreciates every contribution — large and small," Perry spokesman Robert Black said, declining further comment.
The minuscule protest contributions will end up costing the Perry campaign as those checks have automatically landed the contributors on a mailing list for campaign literature they’re now receiving.
So the grassroots gets to express their frustration, and the Perry campaign is grateful to lose money?
Sounds like a win-win situation.

While I missed Ed’s show on this topic, it’s a great idea.
Benzion -
Please define “$.02-cents” - which reads “two cents cents”
Since “$.02″ already reads “two cents”, there is no need to include “cents” after “$.02″.
The better way to write this is “2 cents” or “two cents”
I would go into the admin pages and change it myself, but I don’t want to shut down the site again!
This is great. I called Perry’s office and they insisted it was not a tax increase,
and I said “Tax expansion”, and they said, “It will not effect you as a sole proprietor.”
I replied;
“Perry will probably be re-elected, but he will be embarrassed by the lack of enthusiastic support and narrow margin and that will keep him off the National Ticket and you will not go with him to Washington”
She hung up.
Will mail my check today - GREAT idea!!
Don’t forget to send one to the most powerful person in Texas government–DEWHURST.
I meant to send my check the first time around, but got busy and forgot. Will do it right now. Along with a copy of my campaign contribution to Kinky.
(steam coming out of ears)
Hey I like this idea. I just wrote my $.02, 2 cents, two cents check and as they say, “The check’s in the mail”.
You know what? I’m gonna get that RINO Glen Hegar’s address and send him one too.
About a 2 years ago, I sent my canceled check from C.L.O.U.T. to the Texas GOP. The sent it back! After seeing “The Breck Girl’s” Ad touting the largest tax increase since Old Bag Richards, as a $2000 tax cut for me, I decided to vote for the Village Idiot. That would be Kinky, for you folks in Rio Linda.
Bell will win if Perry don’t and how can he possiblly be worse than this Rhino.

Maybe we could use this contribution strategy to attack all politicos and get them to waste their campaign money sending stuff to us. Send all of them, Democrats and Republicans, a $.02 check, send checks in all your kids name, increase these morons contributor rolls a thousand fold, any money they spend, waste, sending propaganda to us will dilute their overall campaigning effort. Every time they send a prepaid envelope stuff it with as much junk mail as you can and send it back to them to increase the cost to their campaigns. If we enclosed a penny with the return and kept good records then we could check their contributor reports for errors in reporting and get them on that. The only downside I see is the burden on the garbage men who will have to handle all the trash that is generated and the postal workers who will have to deliver it. Heck if we mounted this effort nationally for everyone running for public office we may actually bury the system in campaign trash coming and going and consume a lot of campaign dollars for no benefit to the candidates.

I love it. Choke them on their own “stuff”.

If you don’t think Chris Bell would be worse than Perry, you aren’t paying attention.
Evidently, Perry is as good with the math effecting his campaign dolars, as he is with the math on the new tax/net tax increase.
I never expected to be quote in person in a newspaper but if it helps to change things, so be it. I did not send .02 because I did not want to waste my money. Mary Bean
At the suggestion of another LSTer I sent dos centavos with appropriate message concerning the border issue and the new tax. I guess they pocketed the change for later, cause I have yet to hear from them. Next will be a Wild Bill Clinton 2 dollar bill I have around here somewhere.
A friend of mine sent a pot load full of Monopoly money.
Another whacko I know sent an IOU with a message that he would contrivbute again once taxes and spending were cut. He also said he was tapped for spare money right now.
Meanwhile another friend of mine went to some gag store boughtt and sent a “rubber check”. He figured the whooppee cushion would be too tacky.
Yea I hang with some really interesting folks.
Larry the Cable Guy once paid a topless dancer with monopoly money. When she was offended, he informed her that he pays fake money for fake breasts. The idea of sending monopoly money to Rick Perry would be the same thing. Fake money for a Fake Govenor.
Has it dawned on anyone that lately Edd, Dan and LST are the Democrat’s best friends. I wonder if this trifecta are dnc moles. At any rate, I bet the local DNC is enjoying the show of republicans eating their own.
