Hans Marticiuc, president of the Houston Police Officers Union, has an op-ed piece in today’s Chron, blasting HPD Chief Harold Hurtt’s mismanagement:
Many have told me that, overall, Hurtt’s leadership is well below par, and in areas where the chief does exert himself, the results are anything but satisfactory.
Since Hurtt has taken over HPD, our city and citizens have witnessed a two-year period during which violent crime in Houston increased after a prolonged period of time during which crime had declined.
As the first responders in the fight against crime, we have tried repeatedly to make constructive suggestions to help address the crime increases in Houston. In each case, it seems, the chief has ignored the men and women with local experience out on the front lines.

7/13 is tomorrow.
The spin should be dizzying.
Chief Hurtt failed to acknowledge the problem was mainly due to the New Orleans evacuees. I don’t know whether this was for racial reasons or whether the chief thought his so-called experience would easily overcome his lack of experience about his new surroundings but we all definitely feel less safe since his arrival. Maybe the police chief needs to hire a PR firm, like Carol Alvarado did, to help his image. Or is all else fails, play the “race card” and claim all the white officers are out to get him.
Robert, I think it’s bigger than that. The New Orleans evacuees were the straw that broke the camel’s back, but HPD had been suffering for many years with manpower shortages.
This goes back to city mismanagement. I’ve heard for years that HPD is about to lose all of its seasoned officers, and all that was needed was a pay raise to bring their retirements up to a more palateable level.
Leepy Brown gave the pay raise, and the HPD officers have been abandoning ship ever since.
Piss poor management from Leepy (and his predecessors) is the real cause for this.
Of course, they always find money for band uniforms, but never for fire or police.
This is what happends when you are required to have a black police chief. Rather than getting the best they had to use the right color. Is anyone really surprised?
This afternoon I was coming out to my car from my house. A couple of hispanic guys in a van stopped in fron of my driveway and asked if I was interested in a home surround sound system. Obviously they were peddling stolen merchandise. I told them no and jotted down their license plate number. I tried following them while dialing HPD’s number I have saved on my cell phone. It took me about a half an hour on hold to get through to one of their idiot minority call center idiots. It’s no wonder Rice Military has the crime problem it has. The woman I talked to was stupider than the corn cob she had up her a$$.
Chief Hurtt is buying time for retirement. Easy does it. Can’t get hurt thisa way.
Oh, the reason you have to have a black police chief is to protect the city against any racial riots if some black guy gets shot by the police. There is no way Quanell X can stir the race pot with a black guy in charge. You think I am making this stuff up?

Ha…. how true. Being qualified for a position is not a requirement in HPD. Being the right color carries much more weight than knwing how to do the job. One of the Ass’t Chiefs is so dumb they nick named him “we-be” (and not because of his ivy league vocabulary)! The whole dept’ from captain level on up is full of boot licking idiots that could care less about anyone beneath them. They are either incompetent suck-ups or welfare promotions. I had to eat a lot of crow thinking that Hurtt would be better for HPD because he was from outside the system. But, he assimilated pretty well into the “good old brotha’s network”……
My, my are we sounding racist or what. What if the chief were white and the crime rate escalated? The Mayor, Bill White, is at fault for choosing Chief Hurtt, so let’s not play the race card here even if Mayor White decided it would be better to tone down racial riots with a black police chief since the inner city is mostly minority. The Mayor is at fault for not choosing to promote from within the department and chose rather to go outside the state. That disappointed many who really felt they deserved a promotion and more than likely worked for and were hoping for it. Let’s put some of the blame where it belongs. Aside from that, Chief Hurtt does not seem to be a very aggressive chief with regard to communicating to the residents of the City that he has solutions to the rising crime rate.
#6 - minority call center idiots?? Minorities are not the only ones working the call center - I personally know of two who are 100% white at the call center and perhaps you did not get one of them, but that does not give you the right to condemn minorities as idiots…you need to be careful with accusations of this nature.
