They forgot to mention this only applies to US citizens. For Mexicans its business as usual. I thought by law they cant turn away someone who cant pay. This is all PR and it doesnt mean anything.

  2. Robert on July 31st, 2006 at 9:52 am

Maybe by demanding a deposit for non-emergency care it will unclog the system. Because, as we know, if it’s free they will come!!!!!

  3. fasternu426 on July 31st, 2006 at 9:53 am

But when you get gut-shot in a cantina on friday night, they’ll still treat you.

  4. gregg aka T-BONE on July 31st, 2006 at 9:54 am

The full article states “children under 17 are exempt” That is about 95% of the non-emergency cases.

  5. willsin on July 31st, 2006 at 9:58 am

So many loopholes, you can drive a trailer full of illegals through it. Just lip service PR. Where are the REAL reforms?

  6. willsin on July 31st, 2006 at 10:01 am

Plus, read the fine print about the additional tax dollars that will be wasted providing care for these illegals”

“The district is beefing up the urgent care staff at LBJ and expanding the urgent care center’s hours to help treat patients diverted from the emergency room. Construction will begin soon on a $650,000 urgent care center near Ben Taub’s emergency room.”

  7. navymom on July 31st, 2006 at 11:11 am

My brother just graduated his schooling to become a nurse. He did 2 weeks training at LBJ Labor/Delivery. He said EVERY patient there in his care were Hispanic, non english speaking, and most were in their early 20’s having their 3rd or 4th kid.

Our tax $$ at work, for THEM, not US!

  8. Tejano on July 31st, 2006 at 11:23 am

    7. Their tax dollars at work too! Please use the facts when commenting!

  9. Rorschach on July 31st, 2006 at 11:26 am

tejano, . more than half of the cost is paid for by the federal government. since they pay NO federal taxes, they don\’t have any tax money to spend.

  10. Rorschach on July 31st, 2006 at 11:27 am

BTW, that is called tax evasion and that is what Al Capone ended up in the federal pen for.

  11. The most skeptical SOB on the planet on July 31st, 2006 at 11:46 am

The illegals make up for the fed tax in sin taxes. Lottery, cigarettes, and beer. Arrribbbaaa!!!

  12. davewolfgang on July 31st, 2006 at 11:58 am

#11. Those aren’t Fed Taxes…..those are local and state.

  13. No Higher Tax on July 31st, 2006 at 12:04 pm

The contribution by illegals to the tax system is so small as compared to the amount they receive. When immigrants came thru Ellis Island thye got no medical care, schooling or housing without paying for it. Shame is the Europeans paid and the illegals from south of the border don’t.

  14. dowjones25k on July 31st, 2006 at 12:21 pm

the illegals are paid in cash - no taxes only sales taxes when they buy.

it a shame the white and black bosses they work for are generally paid by check. they take it to check cashing places to avoid putting it in their bank so they pay no taxes either. both are wrong and you are partially wrong!

  15. navymom on July 31st, 2006 at 1:32 pm

    Thanks #9, #12, #13 & #14.

I guess I should rephrase my earlier post. Seems like the Hispanic population are helping spend more tax dollars than I am!

  16. Definitely Blonde on July 31st, 2006 at 1:48 pm

Navymom, you are correct. Food stamp day at Food Town - is a riot. not a single word of english is spoken. I stopped in to buy cake iceing on my way home not knowing about food stamp day. These spanish only customers had one or two baskets stacked high. They pulled out the “Lonestar” card and the wic checks, then argued IN SPANISH” with the cashier about what qualified as wic or food stamps.

When I finally got to the cashier I asked what the deal was and she explained “Food Stamp” day

Hundreds of illegals collect food stamp and wic monies that you and I pay for. And with that anchor baby they get housing assistance, and AFDC. and you guessed it - you and I pay for that too.

I do without some of my meds cause I can not make ends meet sometime with my salary. Yet these illegals get it all free, Pisses me off

  17. cameraguy on July 31st, 2006 at 2:11 pm

When they come in for treatment and are not American citizens, you should simply escort them to the border and say “Adios, Muchacho!”

  18. The Deacon on July 31st, 2006 at 2:12 pm

#16, But TMO and the bleeding-heart liberals will tell you that illegals can’t get LS cards — laugh. I was in the HEB on S. Braeswood in Meyerland recently when two obviously illegal females ahead of me tried to put their Loreal hair dye on their LS cards. I guess they thought they were “worth it.” The American cashier apparently didn’t think so and made them pull out their greenbacks instead.

  19. The most skeptical SOB on the planet on July 31st, 2006 at 2:15 pm

I thought you had to be a legal citizen to get gov assistance. Don’t you have to show some form of ID or any info to qualify? Do they just take your word that you are poor? We are such suckers. The world laughs at us. GWB and the Republicans have squandered such an opportunity. They deserve to be voted out.

Is there any other country us crackers can go to live in peace and not get our heads chopped off? Norway, Switzerland?

  20. Tejano on July 31st, 2006 at 2:28 pm

#9. Property taxes pay into the hospital district! Therefore they pay into the system!

  21. Tejano on July 31st, 2006 at 2:30 pm

#14. Go back and check what property taxes pay for!
Exactly the ones you just mentioned!

  22. Tejano on July 31st, 2006 at 2:32 pm

    #18. “Two obviously illegal females”

Wow you must have special powers! I am of Mexican decent and I cant tell who is legal and who isn’t!

  23. The Deacon on July 31st, 2006 at 2:37 pm

Tejano, what a sucker I am! I’ve paid all these property taxes plus fed, ss, and sales taxes, not to mention private insurance, and I could have taken advantage of the welfare system the whole time! Man, what a dope I am. Where’s that application to become illegal?

From a 2001 article in the Houston Comical:

The county’s tax rate is divided among the county, the Harris County Hospital District, the Port of Houston Authority and the Flood Control District. Those individual rates have fluctuated since 1996, but the overall rate has remained unchanged.

The court voted to set the county’s share of the rate at 38.568 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, about 7 percent higher than last year. Court members also approved 19.021 cents for the hospital district, a drop of 6 percent from last year’s rate; 1.826 cents for the port, a decrease of .2 percent; and 4.758 cents for flood control, a 23 percent drop.

  28. ryson on July 31st, 2006 at 3:36 pm

Recently I had an interesting experience with the hospital district (Memorial Hermann). My son had an accident and we had to go to the ER. We have coverage and gave all our information, well 2 weeks after the accident we get a letter from a law firm informing us that the hospital had retained them and placed a “Hospital Lien” with the Harris County Court. Due to the gravity of the situation I was sure we would have some out of pocket costs but to immediately place a lien with the courts without finding out if things are covered is crazy (I wonder how much overhead this adds to the bills). I must say the medical staff @ Memorial Hermann was top notch and zero complaints regarding patient care..just how they handled the situation.

  29. cameraguy on July 31st, 2006 at 3:36 pm

How come libs can fire off a comment and not have to answer for it? Some lib asked how can you tell if they were “ovbiously illegal???” I live and breath, my friend, I live and breath…”

It’s not that hard to tell things about people. If liberalism has washed away your ability to make judgements and observations about people, objects, places and things, then I sure hope you don’t vote.

And that’s another thing… Who said everyone should vote? Welfare people should not vote. People who rent apartments should not be able to vote either. Only property-owning adults should be allowed to vote… Everyone else? “Adios Muchacho!”

  30. shannon on July 31st, 2006 at 3:42 pm

    From Judge Eckels site:

The Hospital District is a distinct legal and taxing entity. Commissioners Court approves the budget of the Hospital District, but has no other direct control of their operations. Commissioners Court appoints the seven member Hospital District Board of Managers.

Property owners only? I think we settled that about 200 years ago.

  32. The Deacon on July 31st, 2006 at 3:47 pm

Shannon, what are your comments in reference to? (#27 & #30)

  33. The Deacon on July 31st, 2006 at 3:49 pm

#29 I’d settle for a $20 pole tax. It would weed out those who don’t have a stake in the game.

  34. shannon on July 31st, 2006 at 3:50 pm

    Deacon,
In trying to do some research on the Hospital District revenues and outlay, I came across those factoids and thought I would throw them out there.

    Just FYI stuff.

  35. Definitely Blonde on July 31st, 2006 at 3:51 pm

tejano, you refused to answer this once before, but due to your own posts the answer is apparent - ARE you illegal?

Yes it is easy to tell who is illegal in many cases. No english - often dirty and living 20 to an appartment - DUH!

LEARN ENGLISH OR GET THE HELL OUT!

  36. shannon on July 31st, 2006 at 3:59 pm

Heck, if we’re going back to poll taxes and property ownership, let’s make it males only again, too.

    Heh

  37. No Higher Tax on July 31st, 2006 at 4:00 pm

It is very easy to spot the illegals - no English, want everything for free and expect it all to be like south of the border. Just wait as these pin headed idiots we have for politicians get a wake up call when these little illegal assassins are caught and the general public gets mad enough where the Bubba mentality shows

Hospital liens are standard in the industry when someone has been involved in an accident. It is not the same as a lien against your home. It is to ensure the hospital will get paid. When someone makes a claim to an insurance company or files suit over an accident, the insurance company paying the tab will send the insured a check. The insured with a settlement in his pocket may choose not to pay the hospital for his care. The hospital lien prevents that and a portion of the settlement is set aside for the hospital bill. It is unlawful for an insurance company to ignore a hospital lien and pay directly to the insured. How many times have you seen people get insurance settlements and use the money for something else instead of getting their car repaired? Once the insurance company settles and the hospital bill is paid, you need to request a Release of Hospital Lien. Hope this answers your question.

Isnt it ironic, we go to Mexico to buy cheap prescription drugs and Mexicans come here to get cheap, free healthcare! LMCAA! (Laughing My Cracker A$$ Off)

  46. The Dude on July 31st, 2006 at 4:25 pm

    #45 Gregg TMSSOBOTP™,

I never thought about it that way. That is pretty funny. The big difference is that we go back home after we get our cheap drugs.

  47. shannon on July 31st, 2006 at 4:29 pm

More irony. We import the high dollar illegal drugs from Mexico and points south, but not the cheap legal ones.

All we have to do is go back to the rules that were into affect when Ellis Island was open.

And shoot FIRST at anyone illegally crossing the border. That’s should cut the flow down quite a bit.

Please unprogram yourself from the rhetoric and talking points you have been fed. I have come to see that Politicians are one in the same, they have both sold out this country and it’s people! You sound ridiculous with all your Liberal this and that rhetoric!
