The straw-man artisans on the Chron editorial board have created another handcrafted masterpiece:
Some politicians stood all too ready to use the thwarted plot for partisan purposes. Against a backdrop of disrupted air travel, they shamelessly told anyone who would listen that only their party could protect the nation, and that anyone who criticized the handling of the war in Iraq might as well be in league with al-Qaida.
Uh-huh. Sure.

Julie Mason must REALLY be getting upset with her own newspaper for constructing such straw men, without naming names!
I think the American people and especially the American voter are starting to realize who is for what as far as the American public’s safety is concerned. Obviously, those who were opposed to the Patriot Act and those who opposed wiretapping (referring obviously to the liberal Democrats) are going to have a difficult time explaining how their actions would have made us any safer. It will be doubly hard if those terrorist are in anyway connected to terrorist cells in the US. Because we would never know if it weren’t for wiretapping.
Who says the left doesn’t believe in pre-emptive strikes. They know the cat-calls against their stupid, suicidal, appeasement policies are coming.
The Founding Fathers were very forward thinking when they adopted the Constitution, but, I do not believe they would be happy with the way it has been bent and twisted since their times. Does anyone out there believe that a group of “students” would come from Pakistan to go to Boseman, Montana to study the english language and american culture, maybe they wanted to be cowboys.
I still oppose the “Patriot Act” Law.
How anachronistic to think that the government must respect my rights! Wow, the Bill of Rights protecting my rights even if if I have nothing to hide. How quaint!
Jaime, during WW2, the press and U.S. mails were both censored. Did that continue after WW2? I think you’re missing a minor point that we are at war, these are temporary measures, and they must be reaffirmed by congress with periodic reviews and judicial oversight. These are the same measures we use for decades in fighting drug crimes, and I didn’t hear anybody complain about that. It doesn’t stop us from speaking our minds, it doesn’t stop us from voting, protesting, seeking office, or anything else. If you can point to me one single freedom that you have lost under this law please say so.
Why don’t also look at the aphabet soup and attendant Executive Orders that are still in place?
Have you tried to protest these days outside the “free speech zones?”
On the so called drug wars, yes, it has been the cause for so much government expansion (and loss of individual rights) and the foundation for more government grwoth in the so called “war against terrorism.”
And for how long will you be willing to put up with such measures? 10yrs? 15yrs?
When the government does anything outside of what the uS Constitution authorizes it to do, by definition, it IS a loss of liberty.
“Why don’t also look at the aphabet soup and attendant Executive Orders that are still in place?”
Why don’t also look at the aphabet soup of “regulating” bureaus/offices and attendant Executive Orders that are still in place since WW2?
#5 Just curious. As a law-abiding, American citizen, when can I expect Bush’s goon squad to knock down my door in the dead of night, point assault weapons in my face, and cart me off to Cuba? Remember who pulled that one? Remember Waco? Ruby Ridge? These all occurred when the so-called civil rights loving Clintons were in the White House. Please give me credible examples of this behavior since the enactment of Patriot Act law.
Deacon, Ruby Ridge was under Bush 41, and Waco started under Bush 41 - when the BATF was really out of control. The 1994 congress put the BATF back under control.
#10 And how would we know? It is against the law to report those things … it is all terror related. Remember?
#11 I stand corrected on Ruby Ridge; however, Waco was finished by Clinton/Reno.
#12 It is against the law to report what? So far I’ve heard about likely terrorist activity in FL, NY, MI, and MT. What abuses of power are not being reported?
Well to name names, there’s the RNC:

Jaime, do you think the government, thru its actions, is protecting your “right to live” in as free and safe a place as possible? Have any of the government’s acts hurt you or deprive you of anything? Wake up, there are people out there who wish you didn’t exist. It is there goal in life to see that you don’t exist. And you have a freely elected government trying to protect you.
#14 That’s just politics as usual. Nothing illegal there. The Democrats are just going on the defensive because they know they’re about to get shellacked over national security.
To name another name, there’s Dick Cheney:

I dunno, but I think it is a real stretch to say the war in Iraq would in any way directly have played a part in stopping this plot or have directly made us any safer.
1. Most of the plotters were British and of Pakistani decent.
2. The financial backing was coming from Pakistan and the old guy living in the caves of Torabora.
3. These guys had allegience to Al Quaida not Iran. Remember, the largely Sunni Al Quaida is the sworn enemy of the Iranian and Iraqi Shias.
4. Pakistan is one of our allies, although personally I question this statement. The friendship is similar to the relationship with have with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Yemen. You remember those guys! Most of the 911 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The blind sheik we have in prison who tried to blow up the WTC in the nineties was from Egypt.
I do agree with the Chronicle on one point. Too many people from both political parties have used this war for political posturing and leverage.
