Everybody wins
by David Benzion · 08/16/2006 1:15 pmRemember that Hispanic male candidate for Harris County Treasurer?
You know, the one who wants to eliminate wasteful bureaucracy and reduce the size and cost of government?
Well, good news– he’s got a campaign commercial, which you can watch for yourself right here.
[Hat-tip: Greg Wythe]
Meanwhile the question remains–what are we to do with the Republican candidate, Orlando Sanchez?
And this is where the perverted genius that is the Mind of David Benzion fully flourishes.
Because the answer is simple–we need to rally around Orlando as the official write-in candidate to take on Nick Lampson for Tom DeLay’s old seat in CD-22.
Everybody wins under this scenario:
- Orlando appears to not enjoy working in the private sector; congressional salaries are in fact paid for with taxpayer dollars, rather than via voluntary exchange of currency or labor for goods or services of value. Condition met.
- Orlando already enjoys high Name ID and the support of many movement Republican voters– both necessary for any write-in campaign to even have a shot at success.
- Unlike the Harris County Treasurer’s position–in which we actually have an opportunity to reduce the size of government–District 22 is going to have a congressman no matter what (although given enough time, I’m confident some Republican lawyers could figure out a way to screw that up too). So as long as someone is going to get paid to warm the seat, it might as well be a dude with an “R” behind his name.
- I may be giving Orlando a bit of grief for this campaign, but the fact is that I don’t think he’s a bad guy, and I’d certainly rather have him be a congressman than Nick Lampson.
- Finally, as a congressman it would actually be part of Orlando’s job to frequently travel to Washington D.C. and talk about issues like illegal immigration.
I dare you to find fault in my logic.

It’s so crazy, it just might work!
Orlando was “working in the private sector”? Hmm. I thought he was a professional candidate.
Let me see if I understand this: Richard Garcia is running for the office of Harris County Treasurer and has people giving him money in support of electing him to closing the office their spending money to put Richard Garcia in. Is this a new dem. stategy to close offices they feel are no longer needed or are scared they can’t control? Lookout Paul Bettencourt! And Orlando you think they don’t like you now wait till you win and then they try to close the office. I think the whole world has left crazy and gone insane.
I think we should deluge Tom Delay with “Thank you notes” from the people he formerly represented when Nick Lamson wins the race, since the Scrammer Delay was the dumb politician that caused it to happen in the first place. Talk about Cut and Run Demoncrats; well you Republicans in CD-22 got good old Cut and Run Delay.
dugger,
I think you got some of your facts wrong. I think Tom Delay got some bad advice or someone in the Republican party got some because neither of them would allow that seat to go to a “carpetbagger” like Nick Lampson whose ultra left wing liberal views includes “cut and run” (aka Democratic platform. Example: All the so-called party leaders getting behind Ned “I’m against the war (and nothing else)” Lamont).
I have a problem voting for a hispanic, no matter the party. They all tend to favor illegal immigration and they scare the heck out of me. I know that is racist, but so is profiling middle eastern men between the ages of 18 and 35. I know, my bad!

I agree with you that Tom DeLay got some bad advice from the party; however, he has been in politics for 20 some odd years and should have done more to check the election laws of both Texas and the U.S. Him not wanting his name to remain on the ballot, even if he did not campaign one day, was a slap in the face to Dist. 22 voters. He could have remained on the ballot, spent absolutely no money, never campaign and still get elected by name recognition alone. THEN he could have resigned and force the party to hold another election. What he did guaranteed Lamson’s victory, something I am not ready to forgive DeLay for at this point. I can only think that someone somewhere had something on him and threatened to make it public if he remained on the ballot. I can’t see any other scenerio.
/adjusting tin foil helmet.
Neocon,
Like I said somebody got some bad advice. Tom Delay didn’t get to be called the Hammer for nothing. I hope the write-in campaign works because it will really put the Democrats down. The party needs to choose someone to back and to run on the write-in ballot, send out flyers showing the voters how they need to handle the write-in at the ballot box and then hope the concerned people of the 22nd District want the district to remain Republican. I’m in that district and I will find out how to write-in on those electronic ballots. It probably wouldn’t hurt to have poll people outside with forms showing people how to write-in also.
Tom DeLay didn’t get bad advice. He’s doing everything he can to save his own skin.
I’m sure you’ll be getting a Thank You card from his legal defense fund at some point.

The write in is done with the wheel. Go to the letter, press enter, go on to the next letter and so on. However, if you spell the name wrong, i.e., Right instead of Wright, your vote will not count. There are too many personalities who want this seat to believe they will sit back and back one or another, even if it means that a Republican will get this seat. The Republican party has no official say in this matter now that it has gotten to this point. There will be at the very least two or three write-in Repub candidates, which will dilute the Republican vote. By doing what he did, DeLay basically disenfranchised the Republican voter, guaranteeing Lampson a win. Don’t get me wrong, I was always a big DeLay cheerleader, but what he did was wrong. He had a choice - it wouldn’t have cost him a thing to remain on the ballot. Sorry, but I smell something here and its not perfume.

All write-in candidates have to declare, pay a fee which I believe is $750 or collect signatures in order to be placed as a write-in candidate on the ballot. They will not be placed in the “Republican” side of the ballot, but at the end. Then folks will have a list of say, two or three write-in candidates to vote for.
Neocon,
If the party gets behind one person and doesn’t dilute the voting base, it can be done. If the party money goes to one person, the others will have to bow out for lack of funds. I understand there have been about four successful write-in campaigns. We’ll have to see how bad the Republicans in the district want it. And your scenario about misspelling the name sounds like a “hanging chad” thing.
Robert
The Republican party can try to get behind one of these candidates, but anyone who puts up the fee or in lieu thereof collects enough signatures can be on the ballot and the party has no say in that matter. I’m not sure about the party money. I agree that the party and Republicans should get behind one candidate, but with such a short time, it doesn’t look promising. Too many egos - the Mayor of Sugar Land - Shelly Secula-Gibbs, and others are eager to get on the ballot and none of them will be eager to support another just for party unity.
The misspelling the name is something I heard from Dan Patrick on his show, so that was where I was coming from. I don’t remember if Dan said that or Bettencourt. I understand, for instance, if Dan Patrick is running, you could enter, “Dan”, “Patrick” and it would count, but if you spell it Peatric it would be thrown out.
I look forward to the fruits of your research! I was ready to street walk for DeLay, even though I don’t live in his district, so if some front runner comes from the write-in ballot, let me know.
Benzion endorses Orlando? Amazing.
As Popeye used to say “Well, blow me down.”
Confused I yam.
Re my #12
I meant “block walk” not “street walk!” Thought I would catch that before any of you did! D’oh!

I’m not expecting the Sanchez Write-In campaign to be quoting from my “endorsement” in their direct mail
Neocon…you and I feel the same. I don’t like voting for Hispanic candidates because they will play race card just like blacks. The ones who don’t you can count on one hand. It’s such a shame that minorities, especially Hispanics and Blacks are most of the time only looking out for their own because they can’t get past the race thing.
In District 22 my fellow Republicans should seriously consider backing the Libertarian candidate who is on the ballot, and deny the Dems a win. The goofy E-Slate voting machines will mess up write-in votes for many who are not comfortable with plugging in each letter of the name, correctly spelled or else it won’t count.
In your first bullet point you split an infinitive. Sorry, I can’t reward that kind of blatant disregard for the rules of the English langwidge.
