I got a kick out of this one. There was a fire on the Katy Freeway at the West Loop today. The Chron’s Anne Marie Kilday covered the story, and apparently HFD District Chief Tommy Dowdy found her questions, um, less than brilliant:
“Concrete does not spontaneously combust, so somebody had to have spilled something,” Dowdy said.
Heh.

The helicopter view looked like burning plywood forms, propably by a cutting torch. There is very little volume of combustible liquids to spill on that part of a jobsite.
I was told by my ex when he was a homicide detective working a homicide that was highly publicized. His mother told him that the Chronicle said the perp was this and that. My ex said no, Mom, I’m working that homicide case myself and that is not the case. His mom said, but it was in the PAPER so it must be true! It is so sad that folks will believe anything that is printed in the paper!
I know of a fireman who, when asked what caused the fire, he replied, Here in Texas, we put the fire out, before we send in the fire marshal.
Lesson, there are few words said near a reporter, that can not be edited to make you look truly bad

That’s why it is best, when confronted by the paid liars, to simply smile and walk away.
