CD 22: Wallace out
by David Benzion · 08/21/2006 3:51 pmShelly Sekula-Gibbs now has one less obstacle standing in the way of her inevitable defeat this November:
Mayor David Wallace will not run as a write-in Republican candidate for the congressional seat vacated by Tom DeLay.
Wallace announced his decision about the Congressional District 22 race today at a news conference at Sugar Land City Hall.
The decision comes after Republican party leaders from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties selected Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as the party’s choice to run in the November election as a write-in candidate.
No Republican will appear on the ballot because DeLay stepped down after winning the nomination in March. A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot.
The only candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Nick Lampson and Libertarian Bob Smither.

I still haven’t read a single substantive rebuke of the logic behind my endorsement of Orlando Sanchez as the write-in loser-designate.

David:
I left the comment on the open thread for today before you posted this story.
Why do you assume that she will lose? If all the people that would have voted for Tom Delay (and against Nick Lampson)go out to vote for Sekula-Gibbs, then she would win. I wish I could be one to cast a vote for her, but alas I am not in the district.
orlando is as bad as perry or strayhorn when it comes to being conservative - he is a rino just like janik, williams, ogden and hill.
To avoid this future “hanging chad” scenario, if Shelly Sekula-Gibbs is the ONLY write-in candidate to pay the filing fee for write-ins, doesn’t that make the write-in slot hers and then eliminate any technicality in counting the votes. Wouldn’t a vote for the write-in also be a vote for Gibbs. I had heard that unless it was exactly spelled correctly, it would not be counted but she is the only person eligible and listed!!!!! And that the voters would not go to the trouble of writing in???
The only way to possibly get it done is to strongly push for the early vote. These are the people most likely to take the time for a write in.

Early voting is often only about 10% of the total. It’s a good area to target, but I learned my lesson a few years back when I early-voted and then some county commissioner effed us over between then and the election.
No way to change my vote, then. Well, I could have voted again, but I’m neither an illegal alien, nor a democrat, so that wasn’t an option for me.
Now, I only early vote when I’m going to be out of town for the main election (like this year).
I’d like to thank Mayor Wallace for “taking one for the team”. Now if we can just get the folks out there to write in Shelley’s name…
#6 wino, I just remember the results of Dan’s race. The majority were from the early vote if I remember correctly. Impassioned voters can make the difference if they are hammered with the call to vote early. Just a thought.
SC
You are right about Dan’s race, but you cannot compare Dan’s race to Dist. 22. Write-ins have not been very successful, if I remember my history. The best we can hope is that the Republican party and Shelly start campaigning NOW, pull out all the stops and get folks to vote. I heard Shelly on Dan’s show and she said the most important thing she wants to get across to voters is HOW to vote for a write-in candidate. Her message comes later, which is the way it should be. This is probably the first time Dist. 22 voters have had to rely on a write-in. It is not going to be easy for Shelly.
Guys
Dist. 22 will not have the option to write-in candidates like mickey mouse, or donald duck. Only candidates who have paid the $3,000 or so fee or who have obtained 500 signatures may be eligible for “write in candidates”. The voters will not get the choice of writing in someone who is not on the write-in ballot. So forget whoever you have in mind if they haven’t paid the fee or obtained the signatures. Write-in ballots are not what they used to be. Please understand this. When you hit “write-in” on the ballot, it will bring you to the candidates who have paid (or gotten signatures) to be on the ballot. Your vote for anyone else will be a wasted vote.
If that is the case when you hit the “write-in” on the ballot (it will bring you to the candidates who have paid the fee and obtained signatures), then all you should do is click on one of those candidates. What is so difficult about that? No need to remember how to spell Shelley Sekula-Gibbs name, right?
Just saw a demo of the process.
When you hit the write-in you get an alphabet screen. You use the wheel and highlite the letters. The rule of intent is in play here so any honest attempt to spell her name WILL count. You do NOT have to get it 100% correct. There is a list of write-in candidates posted inside the booth BUT her name will not be listed on the actual ballot. The trick will be to get the folks to push straight R then go to the CD-22 race and push WRITE-IN, the letter screen pops up and you use the wheel and select button to get close.
This is a real possibility now that Wallace has saved his future in the party and did the right thing.
A victory here could be really sweet !
Anyone voting a straight Republican ticket is as mindless as those voting a straight Demoncratic ticket.
Anyone who makes a blanket statement about voting a straight ticket is pretty mindless themselves.
