Chron cartoonist brags about being out-of-date
by Matt Bramanti | 08/23/2006 4:20 pm | Alert moderatorThis one’s kind of strange. A couple weeks ago, the Chronicle’s Nick Anderson posted a cartoon about the famous Mentos/Diet Coke combination, which he called “this new fad.”
I left a comment pointing out that Anderson’s colleague Kyrie “MeMo” O’Connor covered the “new fad” several months earlier, but Nick deleted it. Twice.
Today, he brags about being the arbiter of coolness, running this note from a reader in his blog:
One of our teachers said, “You know it’s gone viral when Nick Anderson does a cartoon.”
I think Nick is under the impression that the note is a compliment.
How about “You know it’s gone viral, gotten its 15 minutes of fame and then fizzled out when it finally somehow lands in the lap of Nick Anderson, who will then draw a cartoon about it after it’s been out of the public consciousness for a couple months.” That works better.
UPDATE: Nick responds! I just got this email:
I didn’t approve yours and Kevin’s earlier mentos/diet coke comments because my online dept. asked me to stop approving comments that added nothing of substance.
With today’s blog post about Spangler, it became relevant (barely). He should have posted it under the Spangler entry, but what the hell.
I am amazed that you two have time to worry about things like this.
Heh. I like getting lectured about free time by a guy who draws five frames a week for a living. But hey, let’s look at some of the substantive comments that made the cut while little old me was left out in the cold:
Oh, Nick. Which right-wing whacko hacked into your site and posted this cartoon as your work?
No, I know this is your work and it is great. I hope however that all the above-mentioned whackos who’s incessant chant is ‘Librul, Librul!’ Will retract all the delusional things they say about your (and all thinking people’s) opinions.
Nanh, not a chance…after all, they are delusional.
The TRUTH revealed!
T H A N K - Y O U
what took you so long—
I’ve been looking for this since November 2000!
Bravo Nick!
I can’t think of anything to add.
You have said it all.

I am under the impression that all of you BushCo supporters have gold framed portraits of prez Bush in every room at the house and at work.
Am I right?
Yeah, that’s real substance.

Thanks Bramanti– I can’t WAIT to see the cartoon Anderson draws once LST wins the “Name the New Downtown Park” contest.

Matt, fortunately for most of us, we don’t have to read that piece of garbage whose readership is only fools, idiots, and conservatives who are forced to read it to perform their duties. The rest of us wouldn’t even improve the Comical’s literary quality by adorning it with bird poop.

He didn’t approve my comment pointing out his “old” fad either. Very nice.
He fits in well on that editorial page.

Kevin
Your post is the last one on the page as it stands at 4:45pm Oct 23.
And I quote:
That\’s OK Kev we don\’t mind if you post here too.

Matt, why in the world would you want to comment on that leftard site anyway? Anderson has no credibility.

I’m hoping for something with some rhino love.
I like messing with some of the commenters over there. Substantively, of course.

What the heck is Anderson trying to say with that cartoon? That geeks with candy are going to pull off the next 9/11?

Squawkbox: That’s the one I left TODAY after Bramanti called attention to the fact his hadn’t been approved way back when. I left a comment as well when the post went up originally that he never approved.
Methinks someone at the Chronicle has VERY THIN SKIN and loves to dish it out with his little cartoons, but can’t take it very well.
Sorry, but the comment that his “new” fad wasn’t really that out of date was perfectly on topic, and completely relevant.
Nick Anderson seems not to like criticism, and now that he’s been exposed for it, he’s hiding behind the “online dept.”
Well sorry, but I’ve seen Dwight Silverman approve LOTS of comments that take issue with his blog posts, so I really don’t think HIS online dept is now advocating deleting critical, on-topic comments.

Okay, I don’t seem to have permissions to edit my own comments, and this sentence I just posted doesn’t make any sense. Strike “out of date” and replace with “new.” I have no idea what possessed me to type that nonsensical sentence. Sorry!

Maybe we should just all start referring to Anderson as “Dick” Anderson.

So … “substantive” is now a synonym for “agrees with me”?? How convenient!

Progressives like Nick Anderson LOVE to preach tolerance and diversity… but sometimes that doesn’t include tolerating diverse thought that diverges from their own.
Like I said, I suspect some people are having some trouble coming to grips with the fact that professional editorialists have to share the opinion space now.
It’s kind of weird, actually. In the last six months, I’ve gotten so much interesting feedback from hard news journalists, who don’t seem to view “blogs” and “bloggers” so disdainfully (or maybe they’ve just been really really polite) and indicate that they actually find some blogs and blog perspectives interesting. The local professional opinion crowd doesn’t quite seem to be there yet, though.
