Kinky: Pissing off all the right people
by David Benzion · 09/12/2006 3:31 pmWhile not always a perfect political compass, I’m a big believer in the “Pissing off the Right People Principle,” which essentially comes down to judging one’s own behavior by taking note of who you are upsetting.
Hated by HAMAS? Good. Praised by HAMAS? Bad.
Applauded by lobbyists from the Texas Municipal League? Bad. Upsetting lobbyists from TML? Good.
You get the general idea.
By this yardstick, Kinky Friedman is doing something very, very right:
A Houston-area lawmaker said today that she is “vehemently insulted” by independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman’s derogatory comments about Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Friedman last week attributed a spike in Houston’s crime rate to the “crackheads and thugs” who evacuated New Orleans.
“He has demonstrated a total lack of human sensitivity,” said state Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston. “The people of Katrina have lost everything and are suffering not only from the loss of loved ones, but the trauma of the event itself. What has precipitated from this tragedy is behavior that results from a disastrous event.”
[Courtesy Associated Press; emphasis in bold added by LST]
Get that?
Of course some of these people have preyed on generous Houstonians who have taken them in–they suffered a disastrous event! Could we possibly expect all of them not to smoke crack or act like thugs?
[Snip] Friedman, a comedian running as an independent in the four-way governor race, later said there were “some good people among the evacuees.”
Friedman earlier this week also said that we would not pander to different ethnic groups while campaigning for governor.
“I don’t eat tamales in the barrio, I don’t eat fried chicken in the ghetto, I don’t eat bagels with the Jews for breakfast,” said Friedman, who is Jewish. “That to me is true racism.”
Free advice for the Kinky campaign–any shot you have at winning large blocs of conservative voters will be significantly damaged if you are perceived as caving in to the professional grievance-mongers of the politically-correct Left.
Don’t back down.
Oh, and in case you’ve never heard of Rep. Thompson, here is a little bit we can learn about her from simply reading a single article in–I kid you not– the staunchly Stalinist People’s Weekly World newspaper:
- Thompson has been collecting tax-payer dollars as a politician for over 31 years;
- Thompson is a lawyer
- Thompson was a key player in Democrat legislators undermining representative democracy by fleeing the state during the recent redistricting debate
- Thompson is admired by Molly Ivins
- Thompson went before the national media and tried to smear then Presidential candidate Bush by implying he was indifferent to racially-hate inspired murder
- Thompson is pro-abortion
But worse than all of these other facts combined, is this:
Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown, speaking at a banquet honoring her 30 years of public service, put it simply. “Senfronia Thompson is truly a treasure,” he said.
This is the woman that Kinky Friedman is pissing off.
And if that isn’t a good reason to consider voting for him, I don’t know what is.

The more I learn of this candidate and his views (take note I didn’t say ‘political’) the more I like his message.
Great idea for a new LST poll…..
Who would you like to see Kinky piss off next?
#2 excellent idea; it WILL be done at a date to be determined
#2 Oh heck, I’ll just do it now– gimmie a minute
Poll is up; I’m not even going to try to list names; readers are free to nominate.
It’s nice to have a candidate who does not believe in doing things “politically correct”. Sometimes they say something you wish you could say but for some reason won’t. It is a refreshing thing on the campaign trail. And from what I can tell the only group he hasn’t pissed off is the “wasp”.
Kinky may have some conservative views but he is not a conservative. Then again,it seems neither is Perry. We have to be very careful though this election not to blindly vote for someone just because we are upset with the incumbant. We may just end up with someone who we are sorry for once we elect them. Our current system will not allow someone to be completely conservative once elected. Politics have to be played whether you like it or not. Even Mr. Patrick will realize that once he is in Austin.
And THAT is why I will vote for Kinky.
Some people need to be pissed off. Not pandered to.
If you can pi$$ off someone named Senfronia then you have my vote. Must be doing something right. Give em hell Kinky!
Kinky for Gov. Hell, why TF not!!
May I remind everyone that conservatives were very ticked off at George H.W. Bush in 1992 and many voted for the populist smooth-talking “outsider” Perot. They said the same things I’m hearing now: “It can’t get any worse!” and “Why not? We need a change.” Well, we got a change alright, 8 years of Bill Clinton. We’re still trying to rid the nation of that blight to this day.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
I do like the fact, though, that Kinky isn’t scared to piss people off and call things for what they are.
It’s the kind of campaign I would run if I was running.
Jeremy
That’s national elections. I won’t vote for a third party or democrat in national elections. But for governor of Texas, I am voting for Kinky, at least at this point. I may change my mind. It will be the first time ever that I won’t vote Republican.
The liberals in Austin have been going crazy the past two days. Kinky has them scared. (Rick Perry got scared last week and blasted Kinky for proposing all those armed guards on the border.)
So, of course, they have attacked Friedman for bashing Katrina evacuees. Whoops! Turns out the Kinkster took evacuees into his own home and fed and housed them — without putting out a press release.
One blogger even tore into Kinky for giving short, declarative answers to questions. Where is the reasoning behind his answers? His in-depth position papers? You can’t siply identify a problem and offer a solution! And you damn sure can’t do so in an amusing way. That’s not how politics works.
Well, we’ll see. I don’t think Texans care much about which candidate has the nicest suits or the best haircuts or the most politically correct sound bites. Again, we’ll see.
Finally, I highly recommend Kinky’s new TV ad (posted at his website) that starting airing today in 15 markets, including Houston.
I suppose that Senfronia’s remarks on Kinky are telling us that SHE would smoke crack and engage in felonious activity if her home was lost due to a hurricane or such.
#14 - Didn’t you know? If you are a disaster victim, then horrid criminal behavior is OK, because you’re stressed out that you fell off the government tit…

Well that certainly explains the looting done in NOLA not only by its citizens, but by the police! They thought they “deserved” to have plasma TVs, etc. I’ll never forget the tape of that pig of a police officer looting stuff from Walmart, then threatening the reporter!
Go Kinky Go! There’s a reason he wears that black cowboy hat. Most of my adult life, my response to being notified that I had pi$$ed someone off - “They will get glad in the same pair of panties that they got mad in”.
#10, Jeremy, remeber there is a HUGE Difference in scope of power when it comes to Governor of Texas and President of the US. Besides one of Kinky’s pledges in the begining of his campaign was he would stay Gov for only 1 term then step down. Maybe that is what Texas Republicans is 4 yrs of Kinky pissing them off with off the wall ideas that they have to actually work to keep from passing. It will remind them of the days when they were not the majority party and maybe they will start to act like the majority party..
#10
What a difference it would have made too!
Too bad Perot lost.
Go KINKY!
This is why I am not voting for “Kinky”…
Q: What’s Kinky’s position on capital punishment?
A: Kinky is not anti-death-penalty, but he IS “anti-the-wrong-guy-getting-executed.” Texas needs to take a serious look at the way it implements capital punishment—no one in this state wants the blood of innocent people on their hands.
Q: How does Kinky feel about abortion?
A: Kinky believes in a woman’s right to choose.
Q: What is Kinky’s position on gay marriage?
A: Kinky supports gay marriage and equal rights for homosexuals. He believes that the constitution protects everyone. As he says, “I believe love is bigger than government. And besides, they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us.”
Q: What is Kinky’s position on school prayer?
A: Kinky favors optional, non-denominational prayer in school. He believes there’s nothing wrong with children believing in something even if it’s a rock or a tree.
Q: What is Kinky’s position on stem cell research?
A: Kinky favors both state and federal funding of stem cell research.
***Please don’t waste your vote!
Ken, none of that matters for a Texas governor. He can stay an execution but its up to someone else after that to say go or no go.
Abortion is legal. It will take more than 4 years for the SC to over turn that. Dan Patrick has a trigger law he wants to write. Kinky will be long gone for any abortion debate.
Gay Marriage? C’mon. As Kinky says “Why shouldnt gays be as unhappy as the rest of us.” Funny but the Governor has no say so on gay marriage.
School prayer? Teach your kids what you want at home. Governor has no power to change that anyway.
Stem cell. Once again. He is governor, cant do anything about that by himself.
Hey, dont you like saying “Kinky” Well, then vote for him. Why the hell not.
Ken Palm
Please! Kinky cannot address any of these idiologies while governor of Texas. The governor’s job in Texas is very limited. He cannot, nor will he, change abortion issues, stem cell issues, etc. while he is governor. Nor does he have the power to block executions — his only power is a 30 day review. Read up on what the governor can dictate via his office. There is very little, except the right to call up the Texas National Guard on our borders, which I hope Kinky will do once he is elected.
Ken

Again, I’m gonna say this:
WE (THE STATE ) had a vote on gay marriage. It didn’t pass!
It doesn’t MATTER what his stance is on abortion. He can’t do anything about it. What? Are there gonna be 100 more abortion clinics pop up if he gets elected?
He can’t do a DARN THING about stem cell reseach!
As for capitol punishiment….Have you heard how bad the Houston Crime Lab has screwed up over the years? I’m all for the death penalty! I think euthanization is too kind, but HOUSTON CRIME LAB SCREWED UP!! I don’t want a person executed for the crime he is accused of is innocent. Not that he should be for the things he didn’t get caught at!
No offense, but Kinky can’t do anything about those issues!

So let me get this straight, we want to drop all our ethics, morals and principle’s and put a man in the Texas governors office who has the views he has? Is that the image we want to portray to the rest of the country? Abortion is okay, gay marriage is okay, and we can pray to rocks and trees? Just because your mad at the Governor and the Lt.Governor? Please, grow and and use your brains. There are other ways to get what we want.
My logic for Kinky is
1) not Perry
2) not Bell
3) not another Rhino
4) has better chance than LIbertarian
Consider bothe Dems an Republicans can vote for Kinky for the same reason - Avote against Perry.
I voted Republican to get lower taxes and smaller Government. I would sooner vote for an honest liberal than a lying Perry.
We are electing a Governor not supreme court judge. We need a good business manager and some one who knows how to bring money into Texas and take care of our borders.

Don’t want to gang up on ya, but I am trying to take CON-SER-VA-TISM back to Texas. The only way we can send a message to Texas Republicans is to jolt them. I can handle 4 years of Kinky. He won’t destroy us that much. I still have my principles and will ALWAYS vote against what Kinky stands for. Makes me wonder how many times you have voted…..Some of those issues were on the ballot and the people of TEXAS have SPOKEN….Now I must admit way back in the 1990’s I voted for the robinhood issue, only because I’m a ( ? ) and was worded to complicated. That’s how it passed. Now I’m helping redeem myself on that issue. I was duped. Sorry, must be a full moon or “something”!

Before I get offa my soapbox, fixed the kids Chili Cheese dogs for dinner, and can someone please tell me why there are 10 hotdogs in a package but only 8 buns? I refuse to buy another package of buns to feed the fireants, therefor, I get the bread!

Other ways — what other ways? And how do you suggest we do this? I’m a conservative who is sick of voting for democrats-turned-republicans (like Perry and Dewhurst). I will not vote for them, nor will I be bullied into supporting them. What Perry has done is the worst-case scenerio of a democrat. Oh, BTW, Perry was a dem before he switched to Republican.
Let’s see….Grandma was 1st Democrat, turned Republican, the Indepedent…more flip flops that John Kerry…Does anybody know who her son is……Surely you don’t need a hint! If Jack-in-the-Box ran right now, I would consider! ROCK ON NEO! You know what makes me the sickest about politics? As it stands right now, I am RESPONSIBLE BY LAW right now until my kids reach 18, but yet, at 17, they can go to jail and it’s none of my business. As per my insurance, if my daughter gets pregnant at 12 years old, it’s none of my business. EXCUSE ME???? That’s why I think “government intelligence” is an oxymoron.

Yep maybe some people do. You want to talk about ethics and morality with Rick Perry? We (collective we btw) voted for Perry based on his word because that is what we had from him. PERRY LIED. Where is the ethics in Perry? You can search this blog, my blog and several others blogs and fined story after story where Perry lied to get votes.
Well YOUNG man I have brains and I for one am a Libertarian that will vote for the candidate that I think best to UNSEAT Perry, not a protest vote, I want the man out of office.
I am not rubber stamping this clown again.

You rock, gal! I, like you, will not blindly vote for an R who happens to be a D in the state elections. I would rather vote for Kinky and know what I get than to vote Republican and get democratic governing. Perry is an a$$wipe, as is Dewhurst. Even if Perry is elected, (which is looking dimmer by the minute), I cannot support his policies. It is as if he came out and said he is pro-abortion, higher taxes, bigger government, etc. How in the world can I can’t vote for him?

Woo hoo! Right on, dude!
Again, I ask, does anybody know who Carol Grandma’s son is? C’mon, I know you know! Squawk, I am turning Libatarian moment by moment. I never voted the straight ticket like my mama. Always voted who did what. Like Mean Gene Green…(Luv him!) I vote in Montgomery County now and apparently am a registered Republican Voter. Do you know, the great and mighty Squawk, or Infinitate Neo, how I can change my status? When I got Mama the Absentee request yesterday, she couldn’t answer my question. I didn’t vote in the primaries because I knew I wasn’t going to vote for Perry. Toss up between Grandma and Kinky. Yes, I signed Grandma’s petition…sniff sniff sniff…Hey, I’m a ( ? )..wait, (?)..that’s better..Now in prayer…Oh please Lord, while my children are doing homework, please don’t let them ask me a question that I have to call all of my friends for clarification….Amen!

In Texas you aren’t registered anything. You can vote either party. It is only like states like New York that you must be registered to one party or the other. You do get asked when you go to vote in the primary, which party you want to vote for, but you are in no way “registered.”

Neo,
Everytime I vote in Montgomery County, I get asked which side I’m on. I even made a comment to my friends who were working the election, ask me, are you Democrat or Republican…I said Republican, and they said, you vote on the right side. I even made a wise crack (E=MC2) that I must be the right wing. I have always been asked that. Are you sure?

I am sure - you are not a “registered” anything in Texas. Yes, they will ask if you are voting Dem or Rep, but you are not a “registered” dem or rep in Texas, according to our laws. It is usually during primaries that you get asked which side you are on — not in general elections. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I hate being asked which party.
One time in the preliminary bouts the little Grandma asked me which side I was voting for to give me the “proper” ballot. I told her I would not know till I picked the ballot. She looked at me quizically and I told her that I wanted the to mix 4 of each into a pile and I would close my eyses and pick one and then she could mark my entry as having voted rep or dem.
She told me I could not do that. I asked why? After a minute they relented and mixed 8 ballots and I did my thing. I won’t tell what ballot
I got but I protested mildly and attributed the choice to real bad luck.
Neo is correct. During the prelim bouts you vote either or.
Then in the Main event you are not asked which side.
#20, Ken why don’t you read the article that I was quoted in. It comes down to the fact that a RINO cannot change his look.
Plain and simple, Perry has lied to us to stay in office, he has plans to out almost 15% of the land it the state to FOREIGN Companies(Trans Texas Land Grab), He had provided us with a back door income tax (HB3), Failed when he had the opportunity to use his power to pass meaningful tax reform,( HB1 and no appraisal Caps), and has been chief executive when the state’s budget has grown by almost 35%. Now as far as having power, he has less power than Dewhurst, Cradick, or even Paul Bettincourt. We need to get a message to both the Texas GOP, and Harris County GOP that their actions are unacceptable, and if they do not start to act more like conservatives, we the grassroots votes who made them will break them.
ESKIMO PIE™
If you cannot vote for Kinky because he is for things you do not agree with, despite the fact he has zero power to make changes to these things, then I suggest you show your objection by not voting for anyone in the race.

Of course a Jewish man is gonna P.O. a socialist for pete sake. Something tells me this is just the beginning. The insults will fly when a REAL MAN speaks his mind.
To me this election is like having to pick between being bit by a rattelesnake or a tarantula; no real compelling choices that I see. Is the best the got for so-called leadership in this great state of Texas? God help us all.
But Squawk nailed it on #35 for me: I am a Christian Libertarian, and I will vote for the guy with the best chance to unseat Perry. I’d sooner vote for a three-toed sloth as to vote for that rat again.
If he tells it straight and frosts a Marxist like Stalfronia, then so much the better! The other socialists in both parties, Repubs and Dims, are sweating now if they’ve begun to play the ethnic victim card already!
I appeal to all people of good will who are Texans and patriots: vote Libertarian for Lt. Gov, whoever it is, and dump that bigger rat Do-nothing!

Ken Palm…you need to educate yourself in Civics and Government. Why would you vote for a weasel like Perry who lies through his teeth? This is not a perfect world.
Ken,
The issues that you raised are not controlled by the governor. Would you care if the State Comptroller disagreed with your view about gay marriage? If so, why? Does that have anything to do with “balancing the books”. The electorate needs to find out what the office that a candidate is running for actually has the power to control and then find out where they stand on those issues alone. For instance, voting for pro-life candidate for railroad commissioner (on that basis alone) is stupid. And anyway, we have had how many years with a Republican president and governor and we still have legalized abortion. So what difference did they make?
As far as pi$$ing people off, Kinky has risen in my view even higher by pi$$ing off the ultra-liberal Daily Kos.
Interestingly enough, the Kos seems to like Rep. Thompson:
I think I’m gonna barf!
Our Governor is a bald faced liar. His recent radio add is disgusting.
Dewhurst is worthless, unless you are a lobbist.
My rep. from district 29 (Glanda Dawson)will not committ on a plan to stem the tide of illegal aliens flowing across our southern border.
These politicians and not working for us nore are they conservatives.
These are the very worst kind of politicians.
I don’t care about sending them a message this election, other than to clean out their desk and make room for another.
rj
Comedian? I like his music. I like his novels. I like his views. I never knew he was a comedian. Just because a person can make you laugh…..ah well. By the way, the Governor of Texas has about squat so far as power goes. He can lead and he can advise. Not a lot of political power as government offices go. I think he will present a proper face for our home. Stop the wussification of Texas! Go Kinky!
#57 - In addition to your comments
It was either Edd or Dan that once made a comment that Kinky was just a “satirist”, how can you put a “satirist” in office, etc.
What about putting a talk show host in office?
Are lawyers the only people qualified and elite enough to put office?
Perhaps a talk show host and a satirist(comedian) are just what the type of people we need holding office.
Kinky is NOT Perot, Clinton and most of all Kinky is NOT PERRY. I am voting for Kinky, count on it.
