It’s Friday, and that can mean only one thing — HPD Chief Harold Hurtt is off to Phoenix for a relaxing weekend. Before he leaves, we offer this little wrap-up of this week in crime:
11 News team witnesses baseball bat beating:
HPD sources told 11 News that in order to see the feud up close and personal, just check out the 10900 block of the Gulf Freeway.
We did. And while sitting at a corner listening to police scanners we witnessed four or five men attack another man.
One of them had an aluminum baseball bat and was just hitting him over and over again in the head.
Man dead after shooting on Keegan Ridge:
One man is dead after a Monday night shooting in southwest Houston.
It happened at the Keegan’s Mill Apartments around 11:10 p.m.
Woman found shot dead in S. Braeswood complex:
A woman was shot several times and found dead at the Braes Court Apartments Thursday around 10:20 p.m near Building 14.
Bystanders told police that the victim, described as a black female, was a Katrina evacuee and a frequent visitor to the complex, in the 8800 block of South Braeswood.
FBI arrests gang leader, 4 others; 1 agent hurt
The FBI gang task force about noon today arrested a gang leader who fled after a confrontation in southeast Houston that left an agent with a gunshot wound, an FBI spokeswoman said.
Jose Jorge Brooks, 38, is believed to be the leader of a group of gang members who were confronted by the task force about midnight as they were attempting to rob people, FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said.
Man Shot During Home Invasion:
A man was shot when another man broke into his home, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies said they responded to the call from the Quail Chase Apartments in the 500 block of West Airtex Drive near Ella Boulevard at about 9:45 a.m. on Monday
Boy nearly abducted on his way to school:
More officers are on patrol in east Houston following the attempted kidnapping of a child.
HISD says a man tried to snatch a nine-year-old boy as he walked near the Clinton Park Recreational Center early Tuesday morning.
Arson suspected in apartment fire:
Arson is suspected at a southwest Houston apartment complex.
The fire broke out just before 3:30am at the Shadow Tree Apartments on Lansdale and Beltway 8. Four units were damaged. The fire chief tells us arson investigators are there because a fire also broke out at the same complex Tuesday.
And of course, we lost one of Houston’s Finest:
A 32-year-old illegal immigrant has been charged in Thursday evening’s shooting death of Houston Police Officer Rodney Johnson.
Juan Leonardo Quintero has been charged with capital murder in the 248th District Court, said HPD spokesman John Cannon.
The suspect is an illegal immigrant from Mexico who has been deported in the past and sometimes expressed concern about immigration officials and worried that he should return, his wife, Theresa Quintero, said in an interview today at their home near Hobby Airport.
Have a good weekend, Chief, and relax. Only a few of your fellow citizens will be murdered this weekend.

Our tax dollars @ work!
I know about “out of town Brown”,but, this guy adds a whole new meaning to “outta town”. Can anyone tell me what the crime rate in Houston was the last time we had a WASP police chief? Yes, I know about chunking illegal perps off bridges, but, it sure cut down on crime.
There should be a clause in the Houston Police Chief’s contract that states, “On duty 24/7 365 days per year or at least on call RIGHT HERE IN HOUSTON” with exceptions for out of town travel to be approved by the Mayor.
I hope he has a miserable weekend in Phoenix!

“On duty 24/7 365 days per year”
The officers are held to that standard, not the chief. An officer can get technically in trouble for being intoxicated while off duty.
Seeing as how the taxpayers foot the bill for his air travel - wonder how many police could be hired with all that money spent on first class airfare.
Thank white it is his boy.
#5 No Higher Tax:”Thank white, it is his boy.”
I didn’t think Hurtt was a white boy?

Last night we when we heard the report, it didn’t say at that point if the “suspect” was hispanic. I told my son then, I bet he is an illegal and IF he is, the POOP will really hit the fan now.
Now it worse than I imagined.
So sorry for that family.
It is a shame for the officer’s family, but if anything good can come of this tragedy, it is to SHUT THE BORDER NOW!
…”fellow citizens?” Hell, he isn’t a citizen of Houston. He’s here so he won’t have to pay Arizona’s income-tax and THAT’S ALL.
