In an otherwise well-written piece, the Chronicle’s Mike Tolson and Allan Turner turn a blind eye to Juan Leonardo Quintero’s motive in murdering HPD Officer Rodney Johnson:
They saluted, waved flags, stood at attention, and covered their hearts with their caps and hats, heads bowed — a broad, final gesture of respect for the gentle giant inexplicably shot last week after arresting a man on a traffic violation.
Some things are inexplicable. Why does God allow evil in the world? What’s beyond the edge of the universe? Why did the Texans draft Mario Williams?
But there’s a very simple explanation for Johnson’s death. An illegal immigrant and sex offender wanted to escape so badly that he murdered a public servant. That’s it.
By using the word “inexplicably,” the Chron suggests that Johnson’s murder just happened, as though it were just another random occurrence.
Well, it wasn’t. It was the evil act of a selfish, wicked man who valued his freedom over another man’s life.

If it was not for the posts here, I wuld knot evn half herd of the kronknuckl
How dare they label it inexplicable? I suppose if one of them were in Johnson’s place, it would be “inexplicable”.
Inexplicable, senseless, stupid, tragic,…….
Who cares about an explanation? A good man was killed by a low-life, who just happened to be a convicted felon and an illegal alien.
Sometimes it is just not worth the effort to think too hard about things. Lets give this guy a fair and speedy trial followed by an equally speedy punishment.
Making this low-life the poster child for all that is wrong with our immigration system may be tasty red meat for some, but the pre-trial hype will only serve the defense’s efforts.
Remember, we have to have that “fair trial” first before we can have retribution.
Can someone tell me if the landscaping firm that allowed this convicted felon and illegal alien to drive a company vehicle has been taken to task yet?
I would like to know the name of the Deer Park landscaping firm that gave this guy a truck to drive. I would never do business with that company.
Simple
“Remember, we have to have that “fair trial” first before we can have retribution.”
Why? He was sitting locked the the back of the patrol car with the weapon still on him, and the body of his victim a foot away when the backup officers arrived. A summary execution would have been in order.
How is a bottom feeding defense attorney going to spin that one? Too bad they don’t let the prosecution show how many times he was arrested, and for what, during the guilt/innocence phase of the trial.
…and the Chron values it’s EXISTENCE over any semblance of the TRUTH.
My brother is a cop, my uncle is a retired cop, etc., etc., etc. The news reported this morning that one of the Houston city council members attempted to address Houston’s “sanctuary city” policy yesterday, wanting it done away with. The other city council members walked out on her, saying her comments were in poor timing. I think they were in PERFECT timing! With so many relatives and friends in law enforcement, I think her comment was in great respect to the fallen officer! Those bleeding hearts that walked out were just using his funeral as an excuse to not address their previous mistake! I don’t live in Houston (Thank God!), but if I did, I’d support her for re-election and do what I could to prevent re-election of the ones that support the illegals that cause us harm!
#6. It was a political move! She is trying to ride everyones feelings right now, maybe that is why they walked out on her.
Talk about irony, someone posting with the name TheRIGHT, linking to the GOP website and complaining about a politician pandering to the base. In other news, I heard the Pot call the Kettle black.
Great posting and editorial, Matt.

Maybe it was a political move, but I feel it is a move way over due! Because of Houston’s size, many of the ordinances, etc., that are enacted in Houston impact the surrounding communities.
When Houston invites crime or allows its criminals to flee without pursuit, the small police forces in neighboring communities also feel the pain.
I lived (unfortnately) in California for four years. I put up with the coddling of illegals and criminals and all the freebies they recieved. Houston is headed in that direction.
It may have been a move to ride everyone’s feelings, but coming from a family of cops, I applaud her.
#8…I have to agree with you. I do NOT think political party links, be it GOP, DEM, LIB etc. should be allowed on LST. This is a diverse OPINION blog…not a lock-step op-ed board. That said…GO KINKY!
Maybe they meant ‘dispicable’…since we know the quality of their copy editors, it is possible.
It’s also possible they are trying to be self-appointed apologists for the coddling of people who are here, ILLEGALLY!!!
Even though the first explanation would have been completely correct, my guess is, given the overt bias of our local ‘Pravda for the Sheeple’, it would more likely be the second.
Fast,
I believe the guy to be guilty, however there have been too many cases in Texas justice where the guilty have gone free.
Normally, it is the obviously guilty rich person who can afford a high profiled lawyer that goes free, but occasionally even a public defender can put one out of the park.
I can already see the change of venue request being filed.
Personally, I think the guy will eventually get the death penalty, which means he will be executed about 10 - 15 years from now. The irony is that his life expectancy is probably better on death row than on the street.
Simple
#10 TexasKnight Houston is not heading there, They’re already there.
Did ya’ll know . . . .
. . . that during the Clinton administration, a federal law was enacted that made it illegal for local and state law enforcement agencies to detain illegal aliens soley on the fact that they were in this country illegally? They could not even hold them for turn over to federal officers.
But the county sheriff in Maricopa County, AZ, found a very old Arizona law that allowed him to arrest the illegals as participants in a conspiracy to smuggle!

He has somehow obtained the services of a high-power attorney - Jim Levine (also a big lib).
#10. Needed or not, it was not the right time to make such suggestions. The Pastor/Minister has just asked them not to make this into a political issue! Thats the first thing she did. I am not say if it is correct or not, just not the right time!
#13. It is evident he is guilty, there should be a law that automatically gets him put to death within 3-5 years tops… maybe even quicker than that.
# 17
Did we wait a couple of years before taking action to 9/11? When is the right time? After everyone has forgotten about it and it has been swept under the rug.
Do you want Houston to turn into a bunch of bleeding heart wimps that lets criminals hide in the community and run from the law? Oh, wait . . . I forgot . . . Houston already promotes those ideals.
#16 Neo
He has somehow obtained the services of a high-power attorney - Jim Levine (also a big lib).
If I had pulled the trigger, I would need a court appointed attorney!
#20 Sonia: That’s because you are an American citizen; no one seems to care about their rights.
But if you’re here ILLEGALLY, our corrupted government just can’t seem to accomodate them enough.
I’m with TheRIGHT on this one: there is no question who did this crime, and how it was done. We ought to have a lotto to see who gets to throw the switch on this human cockroach, with the proceeds going to Officer Johnson’s family.
Anyone remember the Illegal that killed an HPD officer in the late ’80’s and was let free after being on death row for about 15 years or so. He was as guilty as Michael Moore is fat but was released after everyone with the best testimony in the trial died of old age, including an eyewitness (who was in his 70’s at the time of the crime. He went back to meheeco and was welcomed as a hero. He was even given a role on a soap opera about illegals in America. He ended up dying in a traffic accident. I can’t remember his name… anyone know??
I do not think the DA will mess this prosecution up. He already has the Mexican consulate brething down his neck trying to get this piece of trash set free. I think a change of venue is very appropriate; I suggest a good old conservative East Texas city/county where the trial lasts less than a week and we can start the timer on this illegals appeals process while he rests on death row.

Guerra?
If now was the wrong time to bring up the sanctuary city policy then WHEN!
This issue should have been addressed years ago - for 15 years now we have been a santuary city and it does not just affect those living inside the City of it affects all of us in the nearby counties. We also live with the crimes and we pay the higher taxes to cover the illegals costs for free medical care and free food stamps and free spanish speaking education ect ect ect… WE pay for this and we are affected by this STUPID sanctuary city crap.
Ms Gibbs had every right, every reason and the need to bring this up at this time. And those who walked out should be ashamed and voted out!
#23
It doesn’t have to be East Texas! (Although I’m probably classified in East Texas, I’m west of Houston.) I’m sure we’d have people lining up in my county and the one to our west just for the opportunity to be on that jury so they can vote guilty!
#25
Will you marry me? *chuckles* I like your viewpoints!
Uh, you are female, right?
# 27 yes I am female - ! oooh please tell me you are a guy not a gal
Yep, a guy!
Age 45, but don’t look a day over 44 1/2!
look, the bottom line is that EVERYTHING has a political component, and all politics are local. Gibbs might well be using this as a political lever, but the truth of the matter is that this is not the first time there have been calls for the repeal of the general order, and judging by the CoH’s track record, it won’t be the last. You must use the tools that you have at hand, if it weren’t this case, it will be another. I’d MUCH prefer it was this case so there won’t BE another. I would have preferred it happened before now, but since it has not, we must stop it now.
#23. Sounds like you want him in a racist town such as Vidor? Or how about Jasper? As everyone can see this man is guilty and he should get the death penalty as early as possible, no doubt about that. But I dont want to see this taken to a small town where the jury will all be members of the KKK either!
BTW every citizen is protected by their govt. to assure a proper and fair trial. If you are arrested for a crime in Mexico, Australia or anywhere in the world you are to contact our consulate and meet with them to make sure you have the proper representation available!!! This isnt about getting him off, its only to be sure he is represented in a court of law… simple as that!
#25. You also have to live with the business those illegals bring to you. Your name is linked to a site, do you own that company? Do you work there? I see there is a Fiesta Pawn, guess who does business with them? Guess who shops at their stores? hhhmmm and they are a client of yours, you dont have a problem with that do you?
#16 I beleive the Mexican Gov’t is paying for his attny.
Uh oh. Romance blooms on LST.
Ain’t love grand……….
I found my true love…… But not on LST

I dunno . . . Blonde never answered me. *sniffles*
# 32 - we built a building - nothing more, we have nthing to do with how a company we build for does business - we are careful in our own hiring, and our subs must prove thier own hiring practices with what is refered to as a CERTIFIED PAYROLL. We also build for NASA, The City of Kingwood and Huntsville as well as extensive medical faclities.
Guess who will use those medial facilities for free?
Clean up your own back yard instead of worrying about mine! Illegals are a blemish on this city that needs popped!
# 36 - sorry had to actually do some work! Glad to hear you are a guy, I would have been forced to go EEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW if you had been a girl!
# 35 - where’d you get my picture
Blonde, that’s you in the pic??????
The marriage is off unless you loose that rolling pin!
#37. lol sounds like you could use your own advice!
Worry about yourself not about others… My point was that you complain about people hiring, selling, and doing everyday business with them yet you dont mind doing work for those that cater to them…. haha irony!
# 40 - sorry, lost my rolling pin a while back had to be replaced with a cast iron frying pan!
# 41 - notice your blue name goes right to the GOP web site - so you a snoop or what - if so I hope you realize that most of us here are about as fed up with the GOP as we are with the dumbocrats!
Dump the known and proven liars - dewnothing and gov hair spray.
GO KINKY- - - all the way to the Governors mansion!
#42
Well, hmmmm . . . a frying pan isn’t as aerodynamic as a rolling pin . . . I could stand a chance with that.
#43
Well, the honey moon is over . . . no Kinky for me! I just can’t take a guy seriously with some of the BS he says and when his best friend is a known drug-abusing, alcoholic tax evader!
And then there is Carol Keeton-Rylander-Strayhorn-what’s-her-name-this-week. I don’t know what she flip-flops more — her husbands or her stand on issues! She’s already contradicted herself! Is she on husband 5 or 6?
# 45 - kooky - i mean kinky is no more than a protest vote - there is no way he can win - and that indian lady - oooh yea grandma many names dont cut it but does have a better change than chief laughs a lot so i can not vote for her cause she might win and she is nothing but a dumbocrat in republican clothing. but I still can not stomache voting for hells bells or gov hairspray - so protest I must - at least I know its a wasted vote and he can not win.
I have come to the conclusion that I did not leave the republican party - it left me!
We need a real conservative party.
#46
Wanna write me in for governor?
OK…OK…here we go for the “umteenth time.” Kinky has never been more than a protest vote! Get that! He’s a protest against everything that raises taxes, every RINO, every Guv.Goodhair out there! If you don’t want to protest the lack of a “conservative party”…stay home. If you’d like to send a message that WILL BE HEARD…vote for Kinky. By the way…did you know that businesses don’t pay taxes…YOU DO! That’s the main reason Perry must be em-barASSED.
# 47 - sure thing - But 1st tell me your platform and plan for lowering our unfair diet coke prices and how you plan to use a “choco taco” to lure all the illegals back across the border!
Inquiring minds must go home now - the office is closed - but Ill check tomorrow to see what your answers are and make sure you are the most qualified to do nothing in Austin to raise taxes or increase the budget!
#49
Hmmmmmmmmmmm . . . never thought about the choco taco approach . . . but as your governor, I would always be open to suggestions! Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County (Phoenix), AZ, has done a pretty good job of making the illegals not want to come to Phoenix. 83% of those surveyed support his methods.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12631015
As your governor, I would work to recruit Arpaio to head the Texas offensive, or get his recommendation for the best person for the job. Maybe Arapaio’s possees could use the choco tacos as bait for the illegals, but the traps would have to be non-lethal because, I, along with several other fellow Polacks, do enjoy a good choco taco now and then.
Now, with all the money we’d save in the treasury by getting rid of the illegals, I would subsidize a Texas-owned, Texas-based diet cola company. Diet Coke would then have no choice but to lower its prices to remain competitive!
This could be further expanded to fund the Texas Diet Cola College, providing a quality education, preparing our young Texans to overthrow the soft drink industry, making Texas the world capital of the soft drink industry. Once we control all the soft drinks, we can then issue soda embargos against all uncooperative countries, and use the sodas as leverlage to ensure our supply of fossil fuels for our dually pickups and SUVs while conserving our own fossil fuels for later use.
Next question?
SCANDAL! Looks like “Texas”Knight is some kind of Georgia interloper!
Real Texans drink Dr Pepper.
I drink Dr. Pepper, but Blonde asked about lowering Diet Coke prices, and I have to work to keep my constituents happy. Note that I said I would subsidize a Texas-owned, Texas-based diet cola to force Diet Coke to lower its prices, which would hurt Georgia-based Coca Cola.
I could also create an importation tax for all sodas entering the state, but I feel that would hurt the consumer in Texas more than the corporate giants.
Next?
Real Texans drink Shiner Bock.
I got news for you Matt I was born and raised on a horse ranch in West Texas and TRUE Texans - DRINK DIET COKE!
# 54 SHINER BOCK, my daddy told me that was made from horse pi$$
Texasknight, you seem well qualified for the job as our next Gov. But one last question (maybe two) 1st, how many cans of hair spray does it take you each morning to style your ears and 2nd are you willing to pass sign a bill that requires you to share your personal stash of choco taco’s? (I do get a hankering for choco tacos everytime I hear the ice cream truck!
No hairspray, throw on a hat!
#55…That was Falstaff beer, not Shiner Bock. SB is the national beer of Texas so be very careful when and where you’re critical of it. However, it does have antiseptic qualities when you need it.
hats are ok - your elected
#31 - were you to get arrested in a 3rd world country, do you want to make any bets as to how long it could be before you are even able to see daylight, much less make a phone call to your embassy.
TexasKnight
Just like Bweldon did, you have to appoint your cabinet from those of us who post on LST. That ought to get you thinkin’
Neo – I nominate myself for secretary of wild drunken parties.
oh yea! But I don’t drink so I hope diet coke works for everyone.
How many here are old enough to remember when in the olden days we thought that if you put asprin in your dr pepper you would get high?
#54
I also drink Shiner Bock.
#55
I don’t use hairspray. I either comb it and let it be, or put my cowboy hat on.
Unfortunately, I do not have a personal stash of choco tacos, I buy them on an “as needed” basis. Funds invested in surplus inventory could be invested in other projects, plus there is also funds invested in storage.
#62
I never heard that, but I do remember back in the 60s or 70s putting non-parailels (spelling?) — those colored sprinkles you put on cakes — in my RC and watching it spew. And the kids today think they found something when they put those Mentos candy wafers in soda!
#43. I can care less what the most of you are fed up with. LOL a snoop? Please I seriously doubt the Republican party cares a whole lot about what happens on boards!!! or the Dems for that matter….
