Today is Yom Kippur.
I am no expert, but according to what I have read, it “is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish Year.”
The name “Yom Kippur” means “Day of Atonement,” and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to “afflict the soul,” to atone for the sins of the past year.
If you are so inclined, please say a prayer for our Jewish friends, especially David Benzion, our illustrious leader here at LST. I believe this explains his blogging absence today.

Because the self righteous ultra right wing Christians “forced” Christmas unto us, to be “politically correct” shouldn’t we start celebrating Jewish, Islamic and other religious holidays. Or maybe to be more “politically correct” since we now call the Christmas season, the “Holiday” season, what can we call “Yom Kippur”. Shouldn’t we have “generic” names for every holiday. Let’s see we could have any one of my “Top Ten” list of “generic” days where we can take off:
1) The Day of “Off”
The “Extend The Weekend” Day
2) The No Work Day
3) The “Floating Day Off” Day
4) The Not Sunday, Day of Rest
5) The “R&R” Day
6) The “I’m Not Really Sick”
7) The Personal Holiday
9) The “I Don’t Care” Day
10) The “Any Religion Will Do” Day
Now I’m sure there are plenty of other generic days we can use, so feel free to add to mine.
To get through college I worked for a family owned jewelry store. The family was Jewish and would explain in depth their holidays to those of us who worked for them who were Christian and often include us in their celebrations when possible. Many Jewish holidays, several of us would volunteer to keep the store open so they could enjoy their family on the holiday.
I learned a lot during those years, and have since marked the Jewish holidays with a special prayer for the Jewish family who was so special to me.
I’m a goyem. I don’t know much about Jewish holidays. But I do like Jewish food! (except gefelte fish….. yeuuuuck!)
When I lived in Virginia Beach, I was always in this place! They were open late and after a night of carousing, we’d go there and ‘get our grub on’! If you ever get to Norfolk area, make the trip, it’s worth it! Great food and good entertainment! They have crayons on the table and you can color on stuff!

Now if we could all be that way with each other’s religion. You are a good person. Missed you at the last BHH. Hope to see you soon.
As my ‘Day of Atonement’ atonement,( I voted for Perry).
In honour of Yom Kippur I will vote for Kinky.
I honored Yom Kippur by raising my pineapple juice in a toast to Kinky Friedman.
Go Kinky, Go!
Thanks all..esp. #2
Mine was great and reflective.
#1 not cool to mock my holiday, I would never mock yours.I respect yours and would never suggest you call it anything else. But since I just atoned for my evil tongue, I will leave it at that.
Reply to No. 7:
I was not mocking anybody’s religion or holiday. I was just pointing out how “politically correct” has ruined traditional things for the MAJORITY because the minority (and in some cases just one person) is somehow offended. Well if the minority is offended, then don’t partake, just craw back into your hole. We generic everything so as not to offend. Well, I think I represent the majority who are offended by the minority so why isn’t anything done about them.
Robert,…got it.
Just pooped from a long holy day..must be overly sensitive and all..
I am one of the Hebrews that REFUSE to say Happy Holiday! I always tell my clients MERRY CHRISTMAS! I am HAPPY for them and enjoy watching them celebrate! How can anyone take away someone’s special day?I can’t stand being politically correct.
