PORT ST. LUCIE — For more than a week, Mary Anne Bender helped her 10-year-old daughter learn her Christmas pageant lines and daydream about what costume she’d sew for the after-school play at Windmill Point Elementary.
But on the second day of practice, fifth-grader Kayla Vance was told she can’t play Mrs. Claus in A Penguin Christmas because the principal has axed any mention of the word “Christmas” in holiday festivals.
The scenario is sadly familiar: An angry atheist complains and away go the (even remotely) Christian references.
Criticized last year by a parent who demanded strict separation of church and state issues, Principal Bernadette Floyd has decided instead to take a more generic approach to holidays, school district spokeswoman Janice Karst says.
Naturally, one parent’s concern with the mythical “separation of church and state” trumps all else.
“It was an unfortunate set of circumstances,” said Karst, noting the school’s music teacher was unaware of Floyd’s policy. “Any reference to a religious holiday has the potential to offend anyone who is not part of that particular persuasion.”
Offending Christians is, of course, encouraged. The repulsive, cringing, spinelessness continues far beyond mere words.
…principals across the district have moved away from religious-specific celebrations centered around Christmas and Easter and instead staged “winter wonderlands” and “spring flings.”
Windmill Point parent Heather Cowart, mom to third-grader Logan, said she was upset last year when Logan’s teacher demanded he not bring Santa cupcakes, candy canes or other Christmas-themed treats to a “holiday party.” Even donations of canned goods to the needy had to be wrapped in newspaper, not traditional wrapping paper, Cowart said.
“Last year Logan got in trouble for saying ‘Christmas’ in class. Is that a bad word now?”
Yes, yes it is. Anything with the slightest whiff of Christianity is inherently evil and must be destroyed.
“Everywhere in Florida, and probably the whole country, there is a heightened awareness to not be offensive to anyone,” Karst said. “While it’s historically been habit, we’re all more aware of it now. We can still celebrate Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.”
How generous of the kind, benevolent administrators. Of course, patriotism is offensive to many Liberals and Thanksgiving is just a celebration of evil white oppression of noble indigenous peoples, so these holidays cannot be permitted to go on much longer.
That’s the point, Bender says: Why is it OK to offend her and Cowart but not the parents who complained about the Christmas play?
“My child learns about Kwanzaa and dreidels,” Bender said, referring to religious traditions celebrated by non-Christians. “Why can’t they sing about Santa and Rudolph?”
When you chase every vestige of religion from public schools and public life, should we be surprised when it is replaced with…this?

I hope Ms. Bender makes a point by complaining about her child learning about Kwanzaa (a made up holiday) and dreidels just to see what the response is.

It is kinda funny that they cut out Mrs. Claus due to the link with Christianity. Pretty soon all holidays will be a six degrees of seperation game.
That’s what I don’t get. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus have nothing to do with Jesus Christ (you know, the actual reason for Christmas).
Aren’t these the same people who are always screaming about tolerance?? Oh, I forgot, it’s just those icky Christians being offended!!!

If we don’t butch up in this country and take it back, I fear that Ramadan festivities will become more common.

A wise teacher once told me, “You can’t please everyone. If you try, you’ll end up pleasing no one, including yourself.”
Apply this to our current PC (politically correct) culture, and you get: “If you try not to offend anyone, you end up offending everyone.”
Merry Ramahanaquanzmas? This is just getting out of control! I do business with all types of different religions. I don’t ever recall any one of them get offended, whichever religion that would be. Bottom line, we respect each others religions. I am offended over this, however.

I know, I’ve posted to them myself. But since you seem to be insinuating that there is a double standard in here and for the Dims, while I would disagree that this is the appropriate thread for it, I must say I agree with you about the glaring double standard we have!!!
For instance, can you explain any other reason why a public servant who could be involved in a scandal like Foley’s would at least have to
resign, but when it is a Dim involved in equally despicable criminal/deplorable behavior, they are apologized for in the media, and given special treatment(Kennedy(s), Clinton, Berger, et al), are celebrated on Oprah(McGreevey, AlBore) and get book deals(???
I think the old saying goes,’none so blind as those who will not see’, applies to you; see if you are actually able to factually examine the point I’m making here, and be honest with yourself.
How is it that Preseident Bush is slandered daily, with complete lack of respect and with obvious malice?? Very well stated! I doubt the dims will respond as they have no responsed whatsoever. They will continue to glorify Clinton and his actions. That’s the Dims for you. They condemn Republican problems and glorify their own who commit much worse problems. The Dims are heading for defeat. They have no plan. They only want to belittle the Republican Party. That is why Americans as a whole will not vote Dim in the next election. Americans are NOT stupid.

This makes me really mad that a one person’s (poor, selfish, weak, pc) judgement affects so many kids and parents especially when it is going against the majority of their beliefs.

When the kids were little I would bring Hanukah to school. The non-jewish kids were way into my presentation. I stillrecall, one time a litle girl stood up in the middle of my question period, and asked about the candy canes representing Jesus blood. AH! That is not my deal, I don’t know about it, and now look at candy canes in a different manner!
I stopped going a long time ago though. I decided I did not want Hanukah to become like Christmas. A made up holdiay totally forgetting the actual reason, a holiday that is starting to have made up facts.
My neighbors who are the most Christian people I have ever been blessed to know, do not put up the tree and lights and stuff…they told me that was all pagan rituals.
When my kids were forced to make Christmas tree ornaments in art, we just donated them to an old age home.
Whatever…I will never understand the whole holidays in school in anyway. I prefer to celebrate my holidays at home with my family.
