Isn’t this the same soccer team that was orignally named 1846? Is this the same team that the Hispanic team protested, because that was when Texas was STOLEN from Mexico? Is this the same team that the Hipanic’s would boycott, if they didn’t change their name? Hey, why don’t THEY build a new stadium?

  9. dcgirl on November 7th, 2006 at 8:02 am

Yeah but guys, I heard that 1000 people showed up for the latest playoff game. Heck - maybe they can have one of the high school stadiums that our local ISDs don’t think are good enough any more.

  10. tedtam on November 7th, 2006 at 8:09 am

    NO.
What part of that don’t they understand?

  11. Jose on November 7th, 2006 at 8:10 am

I say build it. The Dynamo deserves their own stadium. I would rather another stadium than the pennies I would save by not building it.

What pennies are you losing by NOT building a stadium. Color me stupid, but I don’t understand your remark. Usually, building a stadium costs money - we have history on that.

  13. dowjones25k on November 7th, 2006 at 8:17 am

#11 now ted you have not heard a politicians answer on how you do not spend money on a stadium.

the locals will go to the rick perry school of finance to learn how to answer such questions.

Sure, lets bring a thug sport to Houston with all of the rioting after a loss. If they have a record like the Texans we can have a riot a week.

I have re-read your remark and now I understand it. You think they deserve a stadium and you are willing to spend (my) money to build it.

Under a capitalistic system, which America has, things of value usually draw private money funding. Investors would gain their money back by taking part of the income stream. If it’s not going to draw that kind of money, then it’s not worth doing. There may be some exceptions, such as orphan drugs, etc., where human life is involved; or where there is a need to alleviate human suffering for those who truly need it. For things such as sport venues, private ventures, etc., the investment should speak for itself. I voted against the stadiums we have now just for that reason. It’s bad enough that our government forces me to be charitable to people who, in some part, take advantage of the forced donations (welfare), but don’t force me to pay to build a stadium so that someone else can get rich off my taxes. No.

  17. Bigmoguls on November 7th, 2006 at 8:28 am

The sad part is that even after bringing a soccer team to Houston, the Astros are still the lowest scoring team in Houston!

    Go Cardinals! 2006 World Champions!

  18. Robert on November 7th, 2006 at 8:33 am

The Sports Authority is a monster created to make the rich richer and the taxpayer poorer. We have got to be the only city DUMB enough to try to provide a stadium for every conceivable sport out there. If they want to do something constructive why not build a gambling “stadium” (aka casino), at least it might be self sufficient, tax revenue generating operation. People wouldn’t have to drive to Louisana, they could lose there money here.

Where does the line form to oppose this?

  19. fasternu426 on November 7th, 2006 at 8:38 am

And when you no longer can afford your house because of property taxes and high cost of living, what are going to do?

You pay for the damn stadium. Leave me and my family alone. I have voted against every bond proposal for building stadiums.

Like a Brit once asked an American in an airplane: How do you like taxation with representation thus far?

  35. trl3 on November 7th, 2006 at 9:47 am

If you want a stadium for the Dynamo ask Mexico to foot the bill. Now if it was still the 1836 maybe you could ask Texans to foot the bill.

Personally I think the stadium you are using now is good enough.

  36. digitaldon37 on November 7th, 2006 at 9:48 am

Didn’t we find out recently that the Houston Sports Authority is going to tap into the toll road revenue to pay for the bonds due to a decrease in tax revenue ? And we’re being asked to fund another stadium when we can’t pay for the ones we have already?

I agree with an earlier statement. If private enterprise won’t fund it (because it’s economically not viable) then taxpayers shouldn’t fund it unless it is for the common good.

Or unless it’s for the children, like the Berry Center (home to the Texas Copperheads!)

  37. tedtam on November 7th, 2006 at 9:49 am

You know, Jose, I would appreciate it if you stuck to speaking English. Most people here speak English, and you’re attempt to either make us feel different, inferior, or “outside” isn’t making you any friends. Many of us speak other languages, but we don’t use them because we have formed a group that wants to talk together about issues.

And by the way, if making more money is so easy, make some for me, will ya? My husband and I are already busting our collective a$$es so that our children or our community won’t have to support us in our old age.

Hey, this is AMERICA. Write in a language (ENGLISH) we can all understand and don’t be so rude. We don’t need another taxpayer funded stadium of any kind for any sport. Get a life. If you want to personally fund it, go ahead, but don’t involve the majority of taxpayers who oppose it. No sport is worth it.

As long as I have Google to translate “Hacer lo que siempre hago, hacer mas dinero.” to read “To do what always I do, to make but money.”, I am good with Spanish on the board.

The argument to build a soccer stadium makes about as much sense.

  49. digitaldon37 on November 7th, 2006 at 11:05 am

    I suggest a stadium/language compromise:

They can play soccer in the Berry Center, but they can’t speak Spanish there!

  50. LTC on November 7th, 2006 at 11:10 am

    Economically viable?

…2002 and 2003, the authority’s tax revenues declined 10 percent.

…issue more debt to ensure repayment of old debt that financed Minute Maid Park, Reliant Stadium and Toyota Center.

…Bettencourt notes…county residents and business owners pay about half of all car-rental taxes and an estimated one-third of combined hotel and car-rental taxes.

…authority hadn’t been able to make the required cash reserve increase because of the decline in tax collections

…every new bond sale adds interest and principal to the debt

…government agencies that underestimate cost and overestimate revenue — a list that, unlike tax revenues, grows inexorably.

Make the stadium an official ICE headquarters. The govt will then justify the spending of the stadium. As many illegals also enjoy the roaring yell of GGGOOOOLLLL!!!!!!!!!! ICE can catch of few of Mexico’s finest right at their headquarters, and also save money on gas transporting illegals as the jail can be under the stadium.

I am glad Jose can get more money on demand. That makes him either an ISD appraiser or a highway robber. Which amounts to the same thing.

Well, I do not want to have to make more money to enable you to watch men kick a ball around.

As things stand, I am trying to get out of Houston because my property taxes haev almost doubled since I bought my house. The problem is that I do not have the money to do the repairs and, therefore, cannot yet leave the hell hole being created by idiots who think that sports are at par with liberty.

You guys (and gals) won’t believe this but I heard about this two months ago.

The very rich, very Republican family that I work for has been negotiating with Luck (owner of the Dynamo) and other entities to sell some real estate and a development deal for the stadium.

The plan is not only for a new stadium but a multi-use soccer complex all funded by your tax dollars.

I won’t divulge the name of the family but the area they are trying to sell is I-45 N and Beltway 8.

  61. nz-texas on November 7th, 2006 at 2:00 pm

Let team owners pay for stadiums! Because you like soccer, does not mean everyone in Harris Co (and surrounding areas doing business there) should pay for it (goes for all sports too!!!). I can’t get any public funds to buy my business a new building with better office space and a better production area or some new equipment. Nor do I want any! Only sports teams will get ***welfare*** to pay for their multi million dollar playgrounds. Their payrolls are hundreds of millions of dollars. Why? So we can be entertained? Those guys are nothing but trained monkeys dancing for us. I still have a bad tase from the strikes from baseball, basketball, hockey, and football, and the Oilers moving and the Astros threat to move to Va. Screw professional sports! Why are some businesses (and they are a business, just ask Bud Adams and Drayton Mcclain) considered better than others? How about a tax break for most businessses and not a tax hike for the benefit of an elite few? We pay for those guys and gals box seats…. Someday when all the businesses are squeezed so hard noone has a job, at least we’ll have sports teams…

I’d rather watch a race… Drag races are privately funded or sponsored by business, not taxing authorities!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/travel/news/story?id=2597656

Here the basketball players rush the stands and beat the crap out of fans. Or in Football, players from institutions of higher learning literally get into all out brawls on the field and off the field. Baseball players have thrown objects into the stands at fans. These are all isolated incidents that occur in all walks of life. If you do not support a stadium being built with tax dollars, that’s fine. That is your opinion. For you to categorize a whole group of people that enjoy a sport, that is not right.

  83. Mikey51 on November 8th, 2006 at 11:12 am

    #82
No one is characterizing a whole group of people except maybe the stadium builders. Look at that stadium in Brazil. You have an elevated playing field surrounded by a wall, a moat, and at least 25′ of buffer zone. Obviously they want the calm, sedate fans to enjoy their favorite teams real close up.
Merde. No sport is marred by more violence than Soccer, with the possible exception of boxing, but then, that’s the point of boxing.
