Tired of just complaining about the lack of effective appraisal caps? Now you can complain to people who can do something about it.
Governor Perry’s Appraisal Reform Commission — you know, the one that doesn’t include Paul Bettencourt — will hold a hearing in Houston this week.
It’ll be this Wednesday, 2-5 p.m., in Jones Hall on the campus of the University of St. Thomas, 3910 Yoakum Blvd (here’s a map).
Members of the public are invited to speak in the hearing. One such, um, effusive member of the public who will appear is Dan Patrick. He’ll be speaking at some point between 2:00 and 3:00.
Here’s Gov. Hairspray’s summary of the commission’s task. Here’s my summary.
Leiberman, Sunday, said that he would Caucus with the Democrats but refused to deny the possibility that he may contemplate a change to the Republican party. This would shift the balance of power back to the Republicans, but just barely. Lieberman said:
“I’m not ruling it out but I hope I don’t get to that point,” he said. “And I must say — and with all respect to the Republicans who supported me in Connecticut — nobody ever said, ‘We’re doing this because we want you to switch over. We want you to do what you think is right and good for our state and country,’ and I appreciate that.”

The Chron’s editors are at it again, writing an editiorial jam-packed with unsupported assertions and non sequiturs:
The government has a public safety interest in trying to curtail some adult behaviors. Drunken driving is one. Sex between consenting adults is not.
Meanwhile, in the real world, about one in five Americans has herpes and the illegitimacy rate is about one-third.
After boldly stating that the government has no right to curtail some adult behaviors, the Chron’s editors launch into a plan to…um, “curtail some adult behaviors.”
Obviously, what young people clearly need is information to help them avoid the health risks and unintended pregnancies that go along with unprotected sex.
Information is the problem? I challenge the Chronicle to produce one mentally sound adult in this country who doesn’t know what a condom is, what it does and where to get one.
Yeah, this is the religion of peace for you.
In the war for our country, Farmers Branch is firing the latest shot across the bow. The city council is voting today on an ordinance which would: 1. Make English the official language of the city, 2. Make it illegal to rent an apartment or house to an illegal alien, 3. Would make it against city law to hire illegal aliens within the city.
I’m glad to hear that there is at least a LITTLE intelligence left in Texas.
Last month, a Chinese Song class Diesel-Electric sub shadowed the Kitty Hawk Carrier Battle Group undetected until it surfaced within 5 miles of the Carrier which is within firing range.
Diesel subs are old technology but with modern electric motor controls and batteries, are extremely difficult to track on passive sonar when they are operating under battery power. Our 688 Los Angeles class subs, which are still some of the most sophisticated around, cannot kill what they cannot see. Reductions in naval defense spending have prevented us from fielding the next generation of hunter-killer subs. It has also prevented the development of ultra high speed underwater missiles like the Russian Skvall (Squall) which has been rumored to have been sold to the Iranians and/or the Chinese. When the shooting starts, our Navy will be hung out to dry if defense spending does not keep pace with the threat.
Dims push for troop reductions.
Why does this not suprise me in the least?

(My apologies for not including your name in this post if you sent a check to our postal address; it has been an unusually busy week/end, and I haven’t had a chance yet to swing by the box and collect the mail. Please know that this “thank you” post applies to you just as much, and I’ll make note of your name in a post later this week.)
We’ve successfully reached our goal–the server/bandwith beast has been fed for another six months, with a little left over to get a gold-plated toilet for LST’s recently renovated Command Center.
Jeez… 401k, dental, and now a pimped-out commode… LoneStarTimes.com’s contributing editors never had it so good.
In all sincerity, whether your donation to LST consists of money, or ideas (via comments)–or even if the “only” thing you do is give us your time and attention by reading on a regular basis–it is profoundly humbling to know that you care about what goes on here.
We are grateful for your support, and will continue to strive to be worthy of it.
Blog on!
