Look! Up in the Sky

by squawkbox | 01/06/2007 1:36 pm | Alert moderator

Is it a bird?  Is it a plane?  Is it Superman?  Ummm nope it is a banana.  César Saëz, wants to place a geostationary banana over Texas.

The Geostationary Banana Over Texas is an art intervention that involves placing a gigantic banana over the Texas sky.

This mixture of art and engineering will be designed to remain stationary in the skies over our great state.  I am for a good laugh, but I was curious to find out why Texas?  Parts of the concept statement are harmless enough.

- “I wanted to bring some humor to the Texas sky”
It is banal.
It is Visual.
It is a fiction. It is live 3D. It is surreal.
It is dream-like.
In the land of dreamers and the ones with faith.

This is a daring action, defiant like a cowboy act.

Wow “defiant cowboy act”.  Yes I can agree with that.  The noble cowboy.  Yes the vision of a banana floating high above our Texas does bring a John Waynesgue vision to my mind.  Oh-Oh. Wait a minute.  Read further.

- bananas do not grow in Texas”.
This intervention has irony.
Like the paradox about localized actions with global dimensions.

This is a daring action, defiant like a cowboy act.
And the banana is macho and phallic, they say.

It is in Texas because it has oil,
and a lot of Walmarts, Exxons and Halliburtons. (and The Ranch)

It is a buffoon act, trying to impress…
Texan dominant Aerospace, and all the Gun Clubs.

All of the sudden this does not seems so funny.  Who is César Saëz anyway?

César Saëz works, for the most part, consist in art-interventions in public spaces. These are sculptures, installations, or actions performed in a public domain, be it a street corner, a public square or a park. These urban interventions try to address the public and their social interaction in reference to that space. More specifically, they question the symbolism, or the politics in that space.

Nope,  I do not find this funny at all.  I really do not care to see a flying banana in my Texas sky and now that I understand the obvious political statement, even more so.  Hey César, DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS.
