N.O. Times-Pic columnist notes Brown’s dubious record
by Owen Courrèges · 01/19/2007 1:13 pmAt least the Times-Picayune seems to be recognizing that Lee Brown’s record isn’t all it’s cracked up to be:
Get in, get out is crime guru’s M.O. Wednesday, January 17, 2007
James GillLee Brown, the consultant who is supposed to sort out New Orleans’ ineffectual Police Department, arrives with what are touted as unimpeachable credentials.
He was police chief in Atlanta, Houston and New York before becoming drug czar in the Clinton administration. After quitting that job, he returned to Texas as an academic and later served three two-year terms as Houston ’s first black mayor.
His principal talent, however, may be for gettin’ out while the gettin’s good.
He was police chief in New York, for instance, in 1991, when rioting broke out in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, after a car driven by the head of the local Hasidic sect ran over a 7-year-old black boy.
Two years later New York Criminal Justice Director Richard Girgenti issued his report on Crown Heights, which blamed “a leadership vacuum” at “the highest levels of the police department.”
The article goes on in this vein. Gill incongruously says that Brown’s experience may help New Orleans, although his record should speak for itself — the man is incompentent.
Gill also fails to note that in every single position Brown held, crime increased. It increased while he was police chief in New York and Houston. It increased while he was major of House. Heck, drug use went up while he was drug czar. New Orleans already has enough failed ex-public officials floating around. It doesn’t need to hire them from other cities as consultants.
Still, as I said, at least somebody pointed out Brown’s checkered past.

AMEN! I hope more comes to light.
Remember, Mayor Nagin wants to maintain that “Chocolate City” image so Lee. P. Brown fits right in. Besides it takes incompetence to hire incompetence.
Actually, I agree with Mr. Gill — I do think that LeeP’s experience could be a big help to New Orleans… Not his advice, but his experience.
“Get out while the gettin’s good” may be the best advice that honest, concerned, law-abiding New Orlanders can get at this point.
New Orleans does not have to worry about crime - they left thier criminals here in Houston
As far as out of town L.P. Brown goes, they too will soon discover he does his best work - out of town.
When is leepee’s trip to Africa, did you say? When? How long will he be in NO before the first trip? Out-of-town Brown will not be there long. Any bets?
But don’t y’all get it? He is a BLACK MAN! And a Democrat! That makes anything he does (not) do acceptable or forgivable.
Is New Orleans considered “out-of-town” for Lee. P. Brown or will he be going “out-of-town” after he gets there??? And when are they going to start questioning Mayor Nagin motives and actions???
Is LeePee really “incompentent”? My big question always has been “who really pulls his strings?” I know he can’t achieve all these accomplishments on his own.
No. 8
L.P. Brown was put up for Mayor by the same bankers, lawyers, accountants and rainmakers that rode ENRON over the cliff.
Their collective talent at picking political puppets wasn’t any better then their “cooking the books” at ENRON!
My Lee Brown is gettin around.
But NOLA is sinking, the people will drown
Getting in, and getting out is what Lee Brown is about.
If NOLA wants to live, they will follow him out…
of the state of LA
You list all of the places he has “scorched the earth” but if you look at his dismal record, no one wanted him back and it was always a case of… they could not wait to get rid of him….
I thought Nagin made it pretty clear. If you aren’t chocolate you ain’t welcome.
I think I will just stay out of New Orleans.
Ahem, how much $$$ has already been given to NO and LA by the feds for recovery/rebuilding? And it’s gone where??? Now they want to have Lee. P.’s help in obtaining private funds. Maybe they think he’s a rainmaker (pun intended). Could maybe start by asking Congressman William Jefferson for a donation. The whole town is in the running for a collective Darwin Award.
