It’s been sort of a rough week for idiot pedestrians, as Darwin and physics conspire to thin the herd.
A car struck a man as he tried to cross a northwest Harris County road Sunday night, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies said the man was hit on state Highway 249 near Fallbrook Drive at about 9 p.m.
Jaywalking across 249 is dumb.
A man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he tried to cross the North Freeway early Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said the man tried to cross the northbound lanes of the freeway near Airline Drive at about 1 a.m.
Jaywalking across I-45 is even dumber.
A man died trying to run across Interstate 45 north after he was struck by a 2004 Mitsubishi SUV, police reported.
The incident occurred at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 6500 block of of the I-45 north.
Jaywalking across I-45, two minutes away from where a guy got creamed the night before is even dumber.

Build an interstate along the border that would get rid of the problem legally.
In our accommadating, politically correct society, shouldn’t we install crosswalks on the freeway so that this person is in no way inconvienced or deprived of his constitutional rights to cross the freeway. I smell ambulance chaser on this one!!!!
This precipitates an idea. Let’s build a freeway on the border, not a fence.
I even have problems in parking lots where idiot pedestrians have problems realizing that the laws of physics don’t always coincide with the rules of the road. They assume that having the “right of way” automatically demands that cars be able to stop on a dime as they step in front of your moving car without looking. This is even more obvious on freeways.
Idiots.
BTW, this also applies to the guys on the freeways hauling rigs or driving big trucks. My husband tows a backhoe around daily as a matter of business, and it amazes him that people think that they can cut in front of him without consequences. It takes some time for his brakes to stop the load. Please, everyone, be considerate of the big rigs and trailers on the road! If they are signaling for a lane change, let ‘em over. It’s hard to find a spot big enough for a safe lane change, and you’re not going to be inconvenienced that much by letting them in. Doing these two things - respecting their driving space and courteous lane changes - will do a lot to make our freeways safer. Oh, and not running across the freeways on foot.
Maybe pedestrian freeway crossing could be made an Olympic sport?

I agree. I have a healthy respect for the big rigs. Squawk once told me to never stay in the right lane when a semi is in the middle lane. If they have to make a sudden adjustment (say from the idiot who cuts in front of them), they will turn to the right. Stay way behind if following and if you must pass, do it quickly and in the left lane. I wish I-45 had “No Trucks in left lane” signs like 290. I-45 North has high truck traffic and is really dangerous.
Would anyone care to bet whether or not any one of the 3 were talking on a cell phone ?

LOL. I will take the non binding bet and say that the FM249 guy was on his phone. The I-45 at Airline guy was not on the phone but he couldn’t read English and IMO was illegal. The last guy was really trying to see Mattress Mac and I say he was on his phone. :))))

I agree with you, all Interstate freeways need to have “No Trucks in left lane” signs.
I agree on having no trucks in the left lanes on all freeways, however trying to enforce that may be a lost cause.

It works very well on 290. I have never seen a truck in the right lane since they painted the signs. I-45 has heavier truck traffic, so you might be right about that freeway.

I agree with the no left lane law for truckers in and around the city. I would like to see it extended through the Woodlands. I know the restriction extends darn near to Katy.
As to enforcement. Actually the law is stringently enforced by all agencies that patrol the highways. In my travels in around Houston I have rarely seen a truck in the restricted lane unless there is an emergency of some sorts.
Yes I know there are many who can cite instances of truckers braking the law but on the whole most obey the law.
As for restricting trucks in the left lane on all interstate freeways (mild poke in the side here) when you auto drivers get your collective acts together and drive a consistant speed then I would agree. I am guilty of riding the left lane darn near to Dallas. Sheesh traffic from here to Dallas is bad now-a-days. Anyway, why? Because of drivers that insist on driving 10 mph BELOW the speed limit in the right lane. You do not know how hard it is too pass people on the interstate now-a-days in a truck.

I have to agree with you on the left lane rule. When coming into a major city that rule should apply but not on the open road between cities. The problem is who decides when the rule should apply and within what city limits. My answer would be when the interstate has only two lanes then let the truckers go in any lane then.

I dont’t care what lane the trucks drive in,but, I can sure tell you that you don’t want to be next to one or close behind one when a tire blows.
Way back when I was only knee-high to a grasshopper, my momma told me, “Cars are bigger than you; trucks are bigger than cars; and trains are biggest of all.”

That’s adventure drivin’, I assure you. Had a LF let loose right under my seat 2 weeks ago on 290. The blast cleared lanes 1 & 2 and I struggled from #3 across the other lanes to wind up on the inside against the Jersey Curb. Bad place to be. Only want to do that once in my lifetime, thank you. It was frightening enough to hobble back across to the outside shoulder in a fire engine so I can imagine the final terror these unfortunate souls felt with traffic bearing down on them at speed.
