My 18 year old daughter has determined to remain chaste until marriage. She is vocal about it, and is a big promoter of the idea. She yells at the TV when genital warts commercials come on: “If you didn’t have sex outside of marriage this wouldn’t be a problem!”

Yeah, MY kid should be mandated for this shot.

  2. Zippy_Slug on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been chomping at the bit to comment in the right area..

First.. are you fscking kidding me?! If this isn’t some kind of using money for political favours I don’t know what is. How can this even be legal?! Why can’t he wait until there are generic brands ?! Oh.. he won’t get the campaign money from them in 4 years..

I’m livid.. LIVID.. not that I’m against vacination.. is because there cannot be a more BLANTANT connection between donations and one politition’s “law” to force on the rest of us. And make the donor make a pretty penny on it.

RECALL NOW! Who the fsck does this good hair governor think he is? Hillary is the wannabe dictator.

    LIVID!

  3. Phil_M on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

So in addition to being a traitorous lying RINO sellout on taxes, judge appointments, illegal immigration, and spending, it now turns out that Rick Perry is a nanny stater prostitute for the pharmaceutical industry. I’m less than shocked though.

  4. twocute64001 on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:32 pm

I have a problem with state mandated vacines such as this.

What happened to parental responsibility? Are the schools telling our kids, you are vacinated, now go enjoy sex? Should it be the parents who decide about this vacine, even if it was the wonder drugs of wonder drugs, should the state be allowed to force it on our girls.

While I offered to pay for my daughter to get the vacine, there is still much contraversy about the side effects and long term affects, what about parents who, because of these issues do not want thier child vacinated.

  5. Lawrence C. on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Unless the One tRick Perry sends me $360, it’s just another unfunded mandate I’ll ignore. More Perry socialist nanny crap. Don’t blame me - I voted for Kinky.

  6. Shannon on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:33 pm

This guy has got to be worst Texas governor I have ever seen.

If there are diseases in our society that are going to cost us large amounts of money

So what’s next on the agenda you phony-conservative b*st*ard????

  7. twocute64001 on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:35 pm

I also have one other issue with the state mandating that our daughters be vacinated.

JUST WHO THE H3LL elected perry God! He has NO RIGHT to get in bed with the drug companies (remember last year he signed a bill to give the drug companies a BIG tax break! He may be thier whore, but that does not mean we have to pay for his whoring around!

  8. Lawrence C. on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Hey, get over it you guys - he’ll be your U.S. Senator/Vice President shortly. For the umpteenth time, Rick Perry is BAD for Texas.

  9. Lawrence C. on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:39 pm

I’m sorry, I meant One tRick Perry.

  12. Robert on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

First, before I forget—What’s with HAL now requiring a person login after he opens the “comments” section. What is this censorship by requiring login to insure that you really want to comment and will you take the time to log in every time. Don’t know but it won’t stop me from speaking my mind!!!

I can see it now, lawsuits because parents don’t want their kids getting the shots because they monitor or are responsible enough of their kids to not have to worry about STD’s. More government intervention and in this case some side dealings going on. GOVERNMENT AS USUAL, what did I expect? Actually, I expected better and got worse.

  13. Dave D on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:44 pm

#8 Lawrence, You’re right! I’m guessing U.S. Senator. One Breck girl replacing the other. This will happen because almost no one votes in the primaries!! THIS IS WHERE WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE!
    AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!! Think “Howard Dean” here.

  14. Wino on February 2nd, 2007 at 3:59 pm

You left out the part about Merck donating $6000 to Perrito’s campaign.

    No hat tip again…

  15. Zippy_Slug on February 2nd, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I wonder if this would work:

    1) I build a camera box which could monitor the inside of your house wirelessly.. Few if any takers cause they’re kinda expensive and not really necessary…

    2) Write $6000 check to Governor of State X

    3) Governor requires all homes to buy my 360$ device so government can watch you to make sure you’re “safe”.

    4) I profit!!!

Wow.. Its a business model I didn”t even think of! And here I’m trying to think of how to get independent funding. Why? There’s government to help!

  16. DanielJames on February 2nd, 2007 at 4:35 pm

    OK so now what?

I would think that we can take a collective action to demonstrate our disdain for his actions.

    There is power in numbers.

  17. Golden Adam on February 2nd, 2007 at 4:40 pm

Does anyone else find the headline misleading? Anti-cancer vaccination? Heck, I’ll take one of those vaccinations too!

  18. Phil_M on February 2nd, 2007 at 4:58 pm

#17 - It’s intentionally misleading. This is not an anti-Cancer vaccine. This is an anti-STD vaccine. The particular STD it blocks also happens to cause cancer in some cases.

Perry was very slick in the way he worded this thing. The title calls it an anti-cancer drug, but if you read the order through it acknowledges that the virus is “sexually transmitted”

#8 Yea, that’s right, Murphy’s Law, don’t fire them promote ‘em. It will be a cold, rainy day in H$ll next time Rick Perry gets my vote for anything. I didn’t vote for him last time and I see no reason to change that position now, especially, after he has been flip flopping around like a fish on the deck of a tuna boat.

  20. fasternu426 on February 2nd, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Dang, How do I lobby Perry to make the state buy T shirts for everyone in Texas (from my company of course!)? I’d give them a good deal. 10% off and no screen fees! Whooooowee… no nekkid chil’rens in the public schools!!! for free!!

“Don’t fire them promote them” is the Peter Principle.

Murphy’s Law is “If anything can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment.”

  22. oldbiwan on February 2nd, 2007 at 5:46 pm

    “Just say no!”

My daughter can decide, when she is of age and no longer under my roof, if she thinks a vaccine to protect her against promiscuous behavior is warranted, I will be sad but supportive. Until then the answer is NO. Just another in a long list of reasons why we home school.

They system is completely bankrupt - morally, spiritually, and financially.

Soon we will have to put down the pens and pick up the muskets.

    Lemme see… $6000 investment, $36,000,000,000 in profit (100 million times $360)…

I think I’m going to get out of the stock market and mutual funds and start investing in politicians instead. There’s nothing like a 6 million percent return on your investment in less than a year.

  26. southerntragedy on February 2nd, 2007 at 7:28 pm

I was LIVID when I heard this. This is a NEW vaccine. What are the long-term effects of it? How long does it last? What repercussions will this have? /spits

I Will make my own decision regarding my daughter and this vaccination, thank you very much. I decline.

  28. Adee on February 2nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm

No regrets at all that I voted for Kinky and skipped Dewhurst on the ballot in the main event as well as the primary.

Well, just imagine the lawsuits against the drug maker if really nasty side effects come with the vaccine, or it doesn’t work. This is a doubleton–drug maker wins (initially anyway), personal injury lawyers win later.

Murphy of Murphy’s law, his cousins, nephews, brothers, and uncles are always lurking.

People arguing against vaccines for fatal diseases

    You guys amaze me.

You know that just a few dozen cases of cervical cancer can cost a huge amount of taxpayers dollars - this would prevent thousands of these cases

Also women get STDS not from being chaste but from their husbands/boyfriends not being chaste

Of course had Senator Patrick had proposed it…….

  30. Rastus on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:11 pm

What’s RP going to do - run for VP with Hillary? Didn’t he win a strong mandate in Texas with 39% of the vote? Wow - maybe he’s planning to move to England or something when his term is over. Makes me long for the good old Preston Smith/Ben Barnes (Stupid and Cupid) days.

  32. Jean on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

This whole thing is wrong on ALL the levels mentioned. Parents can opt out, so they say, yea just like the sex ed classes? How is something mandated and opt out option- Am I missing something?????
The side effects will be the bummer for these girls and if Merck can get sued, can the State of Texas get sued for mandating the shot?
    Crazy.

  33. Robert Headford on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:19 pm

You can object to the shot by filing an affidavit on religious or philosophical grounds.

The shot may be a good thing, but this is not Ebola we’re talking about. It should be voluntary.

  34. vlou on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:24 pm

This is absolutely incredible! Has Rick Perry gone mad or what? I can’t believe what I am reading about requiring the HPV vaccine be a “requirement”. Since when does he become the judge and jury on morality? The lobbyist are using scare tactics for their own greed. This has got to stop and will only cease when we refuse to let them control us.

  35. Robert Headford on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:26 pm

A war that the majority doesn’t want, open borders that the majority doesn’t want, mandated vaccines the majority doesn’t want, etc.

    Majority no longer rules.

  36. EricPJohnson on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:39 pm

    35

Thats why its a Republic - not a democracy

Getting voted off the island is why the majority has limits - I know - I know - but in the end things can get ugly quickly and leadership (such as it is) must prevail.

  37. TexVex on February 2nd, 2007 at 8:43 pm

As I understand it, the companies are NOT liable for any reactions from their vaccinations. I would assume this vaccine would fall under that same protection. http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/
    Maybe I’m reading it wrong…

There seems to be some misunderstanding about this group of viruses. What is NOT clear to me is which human papillomavirus (more than 100) this vaccine is supposed to protect against. Some are spread through skin-to-skin contact, such as common warts, others (about 30 of them), sexually.

    Hey EricPJohnson -

Your double whooper with cheese causes 10,000 times more deaths through heart attacks, high blood pressure and cholestrol than this stupid HPV.

By your whinny logic this means you want to ban burgers too?

Get a life and take some personal responsibility for a change.

  40. jimb on February 2nd, 2007 at 9:27 pm

    Eric,

    1) HPV, while linked to cervical cancer, is in and of itself “fatal”.

    2) we’re not arguing against the HPV vaccine at all. We’re arguing against a mandatory vaccine for a disease that isn’t spread by casual contact, and isn’t a public health menace on the order of polio or some other of these diseases.

    3) If Senator Dan Patrick had propsed it, we would have been opposed to it, too.

3 straw men in one comment. Amazing.

  41. jimb on February 2nd, 2007 at 9:29 pm

I’m glad to see, at least, that people can opt out. Frankly, this particular vaccine is up to families to choose for their kids, not the government. Eric, if you don’t get that, you’re no conservative. Period.

  42. jimb on February 2nd, 2007 at 9:30 pm

#40, I should have said: HPV, while linked to cervical cancer, is NOT in and of itself “fatal”.

  45. BoxieAgain on February 2nd, 2007 at 10:20 pm

In the 1950s pregnant women were given, by their doctors, a drug called DES (Diethystilbestrol) for nausea and other uncomfortable ailments that come with being pregnant. No long term study had been done on these chemicals either. Many women took these chemicals while they were pregnant. The long term effects were cervical and vaginal cancer for their female babies when they reached adulthood, and their baby daughters being born with vaginal, cervical and uterine abnormalities. Do we really want to be forced to give our daughters something we do not know the long term effects that may happen to them or their children? Sounds like population control to me.

  46. ShinerBlonde on February 2nd, 2007 at 10:55 pm

An asthmatic Pug with muzzle smeared with Eau de Skunk could follow the money trail behind this cockamamie scheme to up the price of Merck stock. One can only hope that this one will be Perry’s downfall, eh? When you try requiring people to innoculate their daughters (at $360 a pop, no less) against a diesease that, as Matt pointed out, is not a public health menace, surely even the sheep will bleat. I repeat: One can only hope.

I just realized why he’s doing this!!!

It’s to protect his own butt! He’s been screwing the people of Texas since he got in office, and knows that he must be the “Typhoid Perry” of HPV by now. This is just prudence on his part. After all, if the people of Texas all start dropping dead from cervical cancer and the attendant loss of new Texans (not from across the border), where’s he going to get all the money to pay back his cronies like Merck?

  52. Wino on February 3rd, 2007 at 8:12 am

(For Eric, I’m lying to everyone else. He really does eat dead babies.)

  53. Adee on February 3rd, 2007 at 9:37 am

If HPV infection is an STD, why aren’t BOYS required to be vaccinated as well so they don’t pass the virus to girls? Cervical cancer is not the only bodily damage this virus does. Takes two to tango, right? Somebody didn’t think this through in Austin. OK, maybe think is not the correct word. Looney tunes time.

Wino: I have been livid about this vaccination since you posted it in open comments (I think). Most of us KNOW who stole your thunder! (stroking your head tenderly…)

I have been reading your blog, I haven’t been able to log in since I contacted you over a month ago. Will try a different route fo sho!

I remember hearing on the radio a few years back about wanting people for this “study”. (AKA guinea pigs). There is no LONG TERM study effect on this. Just like that chicken pox shot. It was approved in Europe about 15 years ago, but that is still not long term enough for me. I have known 3 or 4 kids that got chicken pox, even though they had gotten the shot. How long is the chicken pox shot good for? Does it wear off after 20 years and then my kid dies from adult chicken pox?

    Paranoid? NO. Cautious? Absolutely!!

Bottom line: This is an STD shot.

Wino..don’t even get me started on Thalidomide..or Milltown..or any of the other chemicals “doctors” (and I use the term loosely) prescribed in the 50s and 60s. I am dealing with a 77 year old mother who took all the “prescription meds” given to her…they managed to destroy all of her organs with their chemicals, except her lungs and heart…and she smoked 3 packs a day for 60 years and was around second hand smoke all of her life…go figure. She is a mess in hospice now..thank you wonderful drug companies and your kick backs to all of your pusher “doctors”!! Her liver especially is gone. A body just can’t process that many chemicals not naturally produced in our bodies. Needless to say..I go to alternative medicine when I am ill. Drs will kill you!!! Can imagine the hoo-rah this “decree” has caused all over the blogosphere and the letters and calls piling up at the Gov’s office. Is he hiding under his desk yet? His rep saying it can’t be changed other than by a Gov. smacks of Alexander Haig’s infamous and imperious “I am in charge” after Pres. Reagan was shot.

This sure should rouse and focus the Lege to listen to constituents–re-election and all that.

No regrets here for voting for Kinky.

  72. bluehose on February 4th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Please do the research on this vaccine. It is not safe. There is no one, except for Perry and Merck who will tell you it is safe.

  73. dreitznet on February 5th, 2007 at 5:46 am

The problem with the current governmental relationship with abortion is that citizens and legislatures throughout the country were denied their voice on a very personal matter by the decree of unelected government officials. I know when perry campaigns, he expresses a desire that Roe v. Wade be overturned and this issue given back to the legislature. So what is the difference here?

I might, after discussing this with my daughter’s pediatrician, decide the vaccine is a good idea. I might decide to have her get it while she is still in middle school. But I might not. This is an issue between my daughter, her doctor, and her parents - you can keep the heck out of it! To not even give us the chance to discuss it, that is what steams me! Heck, as long as he is declaring that she has to have this vaccine, why not declare that she has to get Norplant as well. If she needs the one, in middle school, she certainly needs the other.

  74. Sherri on February 5th, 2007 at 9:40 am

Apparently ya’ll aren’t aware that girls under the age of 18 have access to birth control without parents knowledge or permission. My daughter was given birth control shots when she was 16 without my knowledge or permission by Texas School for the Deaf (which is just about a mile away from the state capitol.) I didn’t find out about it until she was 18 and she wanted to stop taking the shots and she became violently ill. It took about 6 months before she stopped throwing up and a year for her periods to get straightened out. No telling if this will affect her ability to have children or not.

  75. twylah on February 5th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

I am a married 42 year old mother of two daughters and a registered Republican voter in Collin County, Texas. Governor Rick Perry’s recent executive order mandating Gardisil vaccinations for girls aged 11-12 is out of line and exposes his highly unethical political and financial affiliation with Merck & Co. This is blatant proof of corruption in the Perry administration. HPV (human papilloma virus) is, first and foremost, a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE. As a parent, I support vaccinations for diseases and illnesses which can be contracted by my children through casual contact. HPV does NOT fall into this category and I do NOT support this move by Governor Rick Perry. Obtaining this vaccination should be an individual’s choice or a parent’s choice on behalf of their child - NOT the government’s choice. This executive order is not only reckless, it is irresponsible and completely selfish. The vaccinations cost $360.00 each - and, as I am sure you are aware, only 1 out of every 4 children in Texas is insured. The taxpayers will be required to pay for the rest. I will not only have to pay for my own childrens’ vaccines, I will also have to pay for everyone else’s - FOR A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE?????? This is outrageous. This is the last straw for me, personally. If this executive order is not rescinded, I will be forced to change my political party loyalty and affiliation. In the future, my votes will be cast on behalf of the Democratic nominees. My disappointment in the Republican Party, both on a State and National level, is beyond description.

I absolutly support mandatory vaccinations for children, in most cases even of the parent has an objection. I realize that parents have concearns but if you will not have your child vaccinated then they should not be allowed in public school, in the interests of the other children.
I also take issue with the right’s claim that giving young girls a vaccine for an STD will promote sexual activity. First, when you take an 11 year old to get the shot you dont say “now you are safe to do whatever you want” you say “this is to keep you from getting sick.” Second, the decision on when to engage in sexual activity is inlfuenced mainly by a person’s upbringing. School, friends, TV ect. are all factors but what your ‘rents told you will stick in many cases. I have no opinion on abstinance, I think it is a personal choice but by the time a girl will be geting the vaccine her mind is probably made up one way or the other.
That being said I am opposed to Perry’s mandate. The long term affects of this vaccine are not yet known in which case, parents in consultation with doctors should be able to make their own decisions. In 20 years, if the vaccine is shown to have no negative side effects than vaccination may be mandated. In addition, this vaccine in expensive. The $360 is Merck’s recomended price and does not include any markups. Until the generic versions are approved this will be burden on Texas tax-payers. As nearly 25% of children in Texas are not covered, most of the bill will be left with us. (BTW health insurence should be like car insurence, everybody should have to buy it.) And of course the whole deal reeks of corruption as the Merck lobbyist was Perry’s former Cheif of Staff.
In some time it may become advisable to mandate HPV vaccination but this is not the appropiate time to do so.
