These aren’t good times for conservatives in U.S. Congressional District 22 (TX), Tom Delay’s old district. Which I happen to live in. We enjoyed having one of the most powerful and, arguably, one of the best ever representatives for so long that it is quite a shock to wake up and find that you are represented by a left-leaning Democrat. But, as they say, you play with the hand you are dealt.
So I decided to go meet Rep. Nick Lampson today at his open house in SW Houston. Quite a drive but if citizens are going to make a difference, you have to get up off the couch as they say. I’d never met Rep. Lampson before today and he seemed like a nice enough fella. The open house was from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, I arrived around 1:15 pm. So, no coffee or drinks left, just a few pieces of warm cheese. Good thing I wasn’t there for the food! I waited in the line listening to a few people talking about how great life is now that Delay is gone. I got the impression that they didn’t really care about Rep. Lampson, they were just glad that Delay was gone. To each his own I suppose.
I finally get to the front of the line only to be bumped by a celebrity. It seems that Sugarland Mayor David Wallace was in the house and took precedence over the Bigjolly. Go figure. So I did the next best thing and asked them to pose for a picture. The picture shows, l-r, Sugarland Police Chief Steve Griffith, Mayor Wallace and Rep. Lampson. They talked while I waited patiently for my turn to shake the congressman’s hand. When I did, I told him that I was a constituent, we wouldn’t agree on most issues but if there was one, I would be happy to help him out. Turns out there might be, he introduced Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online Act of 2007 this week that sounds good.
Interesting that Wallace was there, he was almost the guy running against Lampson instead of Vote Twice. Looks like he’ll be running against Paul Bettencourt (if he decides to move into our district) and the Nutty Vote Twice in the ‘08 primaries if he can overcome a few ethical questions. Seemed like a nice enough guy even if he did use his celebrity status to bump me out of the way.
So, there you go. It’s either work with the congressman you have while awaiting the next election or waste your breath complaining about it. I’ll choose to work with him when I can and let him know that I don’t like his positions on abortion, taxes and a bunch of other things.

Are we suppose to vote on who has the brightest, whitest smile?
BJ. Good for you for going into the lion’s den. I also live in Dist. 22 and sorely miss Tom DeLay–and don’t you know the US House Repubs do every day. Their stupidity in their rules handed the Dems control on a silver platter. Nitwits.
Lampson’s voting record according to the Fort Bend County GOP mailout has been close to 100% liberal. No suprise there. I think Paul Bettencourt would be a super choice to run against him.
Must be David Wallace is shmoozing with him to get something for Sugar Land.
Oops, that’s surprise not suprise.
I’d be happy if Paul ran, but I want Slick Perry to sign an executive order, banning Paul from laughing in public. (sorry Paul! I still love ya!)
Mr. Bigs, I hope you didn’t shake Nick’s hand. I still haven’t been able to get Slick Perry’s funk offa mine. Bleach didn’t even work. sigh…
#4…try tomato juice. It sorta works on skunk-stink so it might work on Perry-stink/slime etc.
Paul’s distinctive laugh lets you know where he is–not necessarily a bad thing.
The way a person laughs should not be a barrier to higher office. I’ve worked closely with Paul during Dan’s campaign and I’ve grown used to it. It is genuine, which is something we don’t see in Washington, D.C.
I suspect whatever I could say on this thread would be no good.
I live in 22 myself and sometime later this year I’ll be moving. Not because of the change of power, it’s just a perk. Actually, I think I’ll end up in Dan’s district. Don’t know who that would make for my congress critter.
Hey, you could have asked him how does it feel to win by having trumped up charges put on your competition? OOPS! See, whatever I could say would not be good.
I’m a conservative living in Dist 22, and I can’t tell you how disgusting it is to have the carpetbagging union thug as a representative; but even with that I sort of know what to expect. With Queen Shelly up there, even for a few days, I was scared witless (or something like that). Now it should be pretty clear that if real conservative can win anything, it should be in CD 22 - there’s got to be one out there, and we need him (sorry no more votes for females, even if they claim to be conservative) to come forward and get to work now.
If Bettancourt moves into D22 just to run for office, does that make him a carpetbagger like Lampson? I am always suspect of politicians who move to new places purely because they want to run for political office there. Can anyone say Kennedy and Clinton?
Does D22 not have a single qualified and accomplished conservative who can run for this seat?
I heard a rumor that Paul was probably going to run for Harris County Judge….

Yeah, I’ve thought about that too. The difference is that Bettencourt is our elected Tax Collector. For a portion of CD-22. I don’t think it’s the same situation. But I admit I thought about it.
The others with conservative track records (not just recently acquired conservative rhetoric like Queen Shelly) are Charlie Howard, Robert Talton, and Tim Turner. Whoever it is, they’re appreciate a photo of Wallace the pretender shmoozing with Lampson.
