Whee, veritable heat wave this morning, only 31 instead of 22 on the north bank of the Brazos at Richmond. Now to assess how many of my flowers are half dead or dead dead after yesterday’s big freeze.

The robins sound happier, likely because they aren’t freezing their kazoos and wishing they’d gone farther south.

Oh, and as expected,, Nick Lampson voted for the *&@#!! nonbinding resolution. He must be booted out of office in 2008. Come on, Paul B. to the rescue!

  3. bigjolly on February 17th, 2007 at 7:55 am

Adee, do you know if Lampson spoke during the debate? He is not listed on C-Span’s website video links.

    What’s up LST’ers?

It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, lineUP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP . We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP.

We could go on, but I’ll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP, so… Time to shut UP.!

    Oh.. one more thing:

What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P!

    Now that I’m Up…that’s what’s UP!

  11. Adee on February 17th, 2007 at 8:54 am

#3 BJ. Don’t know if Lampson spoke or not. Just saw the vote listing. His voting record pretty much speaks for him–if he’s halfway smart he’ll keep his mouth shut rather than address the House on this matter. That would only further enrage us Dist. 22 conservatives and further spur working to boot him out.

    #12 Ya think

That sounds like manslaughter, in the least, and probably second degree murder, maybe. I don’t think they can get first out of it. Ol’ Don Falk sounds like he has some ’splainin’ to do, to me.

18.66 grams of cocaine is more than 1/2 an ounce. I don’t know what a gram is going for, but I guess it’s about $300, according to the “$5000″ estimate the police gave to the seizure. That seems pricey to me.

Any coke fiends out there know the going rate? That sounds like a lot of money, to me, for a gram of anything. A gram is the weight of about a .4 inch cube (1 cm cube) of water.

  19. Katfish on February 17th, 2007 at 9:41 am

    #17 - been many a coon’s age since I was anything near the ‘goin rate’ - I’d bet a gram from a not-so-chincy-dealer today is $50 - $80 / an ‘8-ball’ - (4 grams) likely $175 - $300

Then where’d the cops come up with the $5K figure?

  21. hamous on February 17th, 2007 at 10:37 am

According to this report from 2002 the street price of cocaine was $92/oz. Add a little for inflation and figure the 18.66 oz was worth $2000 tops. Maybe they assume the cocaine will be cut before sold.

  22. I Am Iron Man on February 17th, 2007 at 10:38 am

Not splitting hairs but that chart is for GRAMS - there’s a bunch of grams in an ounce.

    #20 - RE:#18

that was an unedumacated guess partner but Hamous is right about the assumption of further ‘cuttin’ to make more cash along the way……..

  25. hamous on February 17th, 2007 at 10:54 am

Typo on my part. Sorry. Should have read 18.66 grams and $92/gram street price.

  26. BSue on February 17th, 2007 at 10:59 am

Hammie, that’s OK - I am still not feeling up to par, and forgot the original post up there said grams. Anyway,I’ll bet there are lots of folk that would love to get there hands on a $92 ounce.

  27. hamous on February 17th, 2007 at 11:04 am

But to the original point to “Ya thought”’s #12, even with the $5000 estimate, is that worth shooting an unarmed 17 year old in the face for? Add to that, it looks like the drugs might not have even been in the house but in someone else’s car at the house, and you have to wonder about the whole thing.

  36. emmekelley on February 17th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Ok here is my funny for the day. It goes out to all the men with anniversaries.

When I had been married for 25 years, I took a look at my wife one day and
said, “Honey, 25 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept
on a sofa bed, and watched a 10-inch black and white TV. But I got to
sleep every night with a hot 25-year-old blonde.”
“Now, we have a nice house, nice car, a big king-sized bed, and a plasma
screen TV. But I’m sleeping with a 50-year-old woman. It seems to me that
you’re not holding up your side of things.”
My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot
25-year-old blonde, and she would make absolutely sure that I would once
again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a
sofa bed, and watching a 10-inch black and white TV.

Aren’t older women great? They really know how to solve your problems in a
    hurry.

Hey emme, don’t be so hard on the Dems. They like tanks too!

  38. tedtam on February 17th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

I came across the “Stack of Stuff” that I’ve accumulated over the years. These are jokes and other things that have been sent to me and deemed “keepable”. This is kind of long, but funny:

Subject: Is Hell Exothermic or Endothermic
Dr. Schambaugh, of the University of Oklahoma School of Chemical Engineering, Final Exam question for May of 1997. Dr. Schambaugh is known for asking questions such as, “Why do airplanes fly?” on his final exams.

His one and only final exam question in may 1997 for his Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer II class was: “Is hell exothermic or endothermic? Support your answer with proof.”

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
“First, we postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If they do, then a movement of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell, let’s look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you rate not a member of their religion, then you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these religions, and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and souls go to hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant. Two options exist:

    1. If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.

    2. If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the quote given to me by Theresa Manyan during freshman year, that “It will be a cold night in hell before I sleep with you,” and take into account the fact that I still have NOT succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then Option 2 cannot be true…Thus, hell is exothermic.”

did any one feel the gas explosion over on 290 about 6:30?
Looks like a gas line blew up in front of Fairfield.

  58. jimb on February 17th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

#57 - I saw the fireball. It is actually pretty far from Fairfield, closer over to 529 and Fry Rd. It was a nasty looking fire, though…

  59. skigib on February 17th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

there was a rumble at my house, baker cypress and clay, for about a minute. I thought it was thunder, or a jet or an earthquake. I drove down to west little york and could see flames as high as a house.

Oh, trust me - the flames were significantly higher than a house. It was obviously being fed by a ruptured gas line or something. Very intense flames. The site of the fire wasn’t all that far from Cy-Springs HS…

  64. jimb on February 17th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

Me too. It seemed reasonably removed from any immediate threat of taking any homes or businesses with it, but I bet the explosion did some initial damage to surrounding buildings. Hopefully, nobody was too close when it went up.

  65. emmekelley on February 17th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

My nephew lives at 529 and fry and his girlfriend said that the flames looked like they were three stories high. She is freaked out right now and I asked her how she was doing. She said that she had just finished a cigarette, I said well, at least you didn’t blow up if it was a gas line.

  66. bweldon on February 17th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

I saw on the news earlier that the cut off to the gas line worked because it shut the gas off after the explosion. It did cause a large grass fire all along fry road. Maybe that is why they needed help.

The straight poop about our southern neighbors.

    http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=20286

At least 81 journalists were killed in 2006 in 21 countries while doing their job or for expressing their opinion, the highest annual toll since 1994, when 103 died (half of them in the Rwanda genocide, about 20 in the Algerian civil war and a dozen in former Yugoslavia). 32 media assistants (fixers, drivers, translators, technicians, security staff) were also killed 2006 (only five in 2005).

Iraq was the world’s most dangerous country for the media for the fourth year running, with 64 journalists and media assistants killed.

The second most dangerous country was Mexico, which also moved ahead of Colombia as Latin America’s deadliest place for the media. Nine journalists were killed there in 2006 because they were investigating drug trafficking or reporting on violent social unrest. US cameraman Brad Will was shot dead in late October in turbulent Oaxaca state, where strikes often degenerated into armed clashes, and other journalists were injured there.

Now thats what I call Anarchy!

#85….G’day, Gto….no the Daytona isn’t shown down here, that I’m aware of, anyway. It may be shown on cable, but I don’t have cable.

We get bits of it on the news, of course.

    Congrats to your niece, Emmekelley!

Let me fill you in on it. Cars start driving at the beginning. Then they keep driving. Then some crash, sometimes. Then they drive some more. Then they wave a flag telling them to stop. Then it’s over.

  93. sunny on February 18th, 2007 at 11:52 am

#92…Oh! I thought it was a cooking show, Wino! ;)

    Tell her congrats!

I once ran past a Marathon gas station.

  96. sunny on February 18th, 2007 at 12:03 pm

Congratulations to your niece, emmekelley. :)

Wonderful…I’d be still at the starting line, if it was me!

    #89 hey CONGRATS!!!!!

  98. emmekelley on February 18th, 2007 at 12:23 pm

Thanks everyone I will let her know when we celebrate. Sunny, I am there with you on that one. That is why I leave the running to her and I cheer on the sidelines. I lose my voice every time I go to one of the marathons. She jokes with me that she can here me from two blocks away and that is one of things that keeps her going.

  99. sargevining on February 18th, 2007 at 12:24 pm

The straight poop about our southern neighbors.

My biggest problem with illegal aliens are:

    1. They are here in this country illegally

    2. Thier presence has an economic impact on this country that is far outwieghhed by any contibution they may be making.

And it doesn’t matter to me what counury they come from.

Your posts, DJ, seem to indicate that there is another component to your “passion” on this subject.

It seems to be racial and/or cultural, and aimed mainly at “our neighbors to the south”.

It also seems that your only problem is from “the south” and you wouldn’t mind Canadian illegals, or Irish illegals, or illegals of ANY STRIPE.

    Me?

    I’m against illegal immigration. Period.

Not just illegal immigration from “our neighbors to the south.”

That is mean to describe the race that way. LMAO. You know there is much more to it then that. They drive around in a circle.

And they do stop sometimes. Its the pits! ;)

  103. Neocon on February 18th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

    Sarge

What you don’t seem to get is that we don’t have 20-30 million Irish, Canadian, etc. illegals. We do have 20-30 million from our neighbors in the south.

  104. sargevining on February 18th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

    Neo;

What DJ doesen’t seem to get is that the problem is not in Mexico—ther fore any mention of anythnigm to characterize “our neighbors to the south” negatively doesn’t really matter at al.

Even if they were all Saints and thier culture wa the epitome of Western Culture, they would still be illegal, and we’d still have the problems they bring with them—no matter who they are. what race they are, or their national origin.

And any indication that the problem on the border is racially or culturally based with a focus on one race, culture, or nation only does harm to the goal of stopping illegal immigration. It gives left wing nutroots something to point to that “proves” that Border SEcurity advocates are merely racists.

Illegal aliens in general are the problem—not specific illegal aliens.

  105. Neocon on February 18th, 2007 at 1:12 pm

    At least Arizona gets it!

If a referendum measure being considered by the Arizona legislature is submitted to voters and passed, anyone who has entered the U.S. illegally would be subject to 6 months in jail if found anywhere in Arizona, with sentences jumping to 30 months for repeat offenders and five years for those caught with illegal drugs or dangerous weapons.

#105 - Ms Neo….’getting it’ is all well and good ON PAPER - when we see them IMPLEMENTING IT live in person and with FERVOR then I’ll believe it’s true value…….

The problem in Arizona is that the legislature keeps passing things like this, and their DEMOCRAT Governor keeps vetoing them.

Well, I’m up to Volume VII of the transcripts, and my eyes haven’t crossed yet.

  111. southerntragedy on February 18th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

BSue: Thanks for reading them. Can you give us your take so far?

We’ve ALL heard EvilE.’s ™ version. How about yours?

Some here have been saying that the BP agents had a bad attorney. I was under the impression that Michael Savage helped raise money for their defense. Do you think the attorney stunk? Should we call in Rusty Hardin or Andrea Yates attorney?

  112. southerntragedy on February 18th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

    On yeah, congrats Emme!

  113. BSue on February 18th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

I think there are 18 on the net. Some are as short as 7 pages, some 324 pages. So far…. my take - I here that train a coming……it’s coming ’round the bend….

There were several motions in “limine” - the defense was not allowed to mention either the fact that drugs were found in the vehicle OAD abandoned (I haven’t gotten far enough to figure out how it’s handled but they were able to say that he had a grant of immunity but not for what), nor were they able to characterize the border as a dangerous place to work. I’ve actually just gotten past the first day of testimony - the rest was all pretrial garbage and the jury selection process. I guess the only good thing about beig sick is that I haven’t felt up to doing anything except scrolling the mouse….

  114. BSue on February 18th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

And as for Evil E’s take - specific to the multiple arrests for domestic violence, and what he characterized as Ramos “shoving his wife head first through a door causing her to have to have back surgery” - he pushed her, and she fell into a door the day after she HAD back surgery. I guess those little grains of truth in there are suppose to make people NOT look.

  115. sunny on February 18th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Just my tuppence worth to all this talk about expended energy and exercise…I often have marathon lunches or dinner parties! From the kitchen to the dining table, back to the kitchen, turn around and race back to the dining table, then skid back to the kitchen, fly back to the dining table, crawl back to the kitchen, slide back to the dining table…backwards and forwards, over and over again!

No wonder I don’t often entertain outside under the trees…that’s only for annual events! Loads of preliminary training goes into those events!

  116. BSue on February 18th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

I responded to your post before but the server ate it. I admire your prowess at entertaining - I’m doing really really well to make it from the cookstove to the sofa… we didn’t bother with a dining table!

Sunny, I can just see you running the marathon between kitchen and dining room in your cabin in the mountains! How funny!

Bull shiite! That piece was a journalist’s side of the story. Sorry. I doesn’t jive with facts.

  122. sunny on February 18th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    # 116BSue…I don’t entertain very much these days, not like I used to do..I’m a bit ‘over’ cooking to be honest with you…every so often I get bitten by the bug, get a bit carried away and open up my big mouth and invite friends over. Mainly it two particular friends…they invite me to their home and I retaliate…reciprocate! ;)

    #117…Emmekellyey…all that’s missing is the lycra! ;)

#120…Neocon…it’s leaping over the two cats that is the dangerous part! ;)

  123. EricPJohnson on February 19th, 2007 at 7:05 am

    Bsue, ST

    Thats Mr Evile :)

Look my take on it is this

If you want to stretch and defend wife beating child beating senior beating multiple arrest, dropped charges bailed out multiple anger management attendees

    Thats fine…….

Or you could see my comments on Patterico

There, peoples input including SueBobs or whatever diary you link too are alittle less passionate and emotionally stirred as on other blogs (but not this one of course :))

    She

    A. agreed with my takes on the case

    B. agreed that the lawyer for Ramos

    WHICH I”VE SAID FOR WEEKS

was about as bad as it gets

    They

Argued and entered into presentencing the fact that Ramos was a anger management grad

In opening statements greeted the jury with My cient shot him

    Not what you want

Michael Savage, Dan, Edd can raise all the money they want - there is more evidence being gathered on these guys, looks like most of the 9 people watching this are being fired and prosecuted

And you have to ask the question why…..

  124. EricPJohnson on February 19th, 2007 at 7:15 am

    118 Bigjolly

    In other words

the Transcripts (which one day I’ll reveil what I had when I had it :))
proved that Sutton was right and the following were wrong

World Net Daily, John Corsi, Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham, John Culberson, friends of the border Patrol, Michael (I’m not going to Rush to Judgment - now he says) McCaul and soon to be expelled from Congress Ted Poe who is right now pissing all of his collegues off with his racist off the wall comments on the House Floor (someone needs to tell him that railing away at hispanics hysterically is going to get him drop kicked) and thousands of people who crammed their foot in their mouths with their insecurities and wishing for the one Pearl Harbor against illegal immigrants

    Again this aint it

  125. BSue on February 19th, 2007 at 9:27 am

    #123 Mr EvilE
Please remember, I NEVER SAID THEY WERE CHOIRBOYS. What I have maintained from the beginning is that there were enough questions surrounding the matter that I felt a full and complete investigation was warranted, and I thought that the guys deserved to be out on bond pending their appeals. I have only gotten to Vol. VII reading the transcripts, so have lots more questions than before but that’s not surprising. I can’t read Petterico or whatever you referenced because I don’t have a link and have never heard of her/him/it.
