Well, it costs money for Burger King to make change, but they still do it. It would be a lot faster to take your $10, hand you your food (and laugh all the way to the bank). We need a spending limit that works FOR taxpayers. The current spending limit failed to limit spending, and now is a roadblock to providing property tax relief. Legislators needed to follow through on the commitment to property tax relief. Now they need to change the spending limit to provide us with a mechanism to return surplus revenue to taxpayers. It’s a broken spending limit - let’s fix it! - cutmytaxes Says:

If you’re confused about this issue, consider the reliability of your sources for information. Here’s the bottom line:Those who voted against exceeding the spending cap were led by and defended by liberal Democrats. Those who voted to exceed the spending cap and provide the largest tax cut in state history were led by conservative groups like Texans for fiscal responsibility.Which group do you trust more to defend taxpayers? - RickG Says:

Lots of interesting comments but nobody really addressed the merits of the article - unless one takes the continued outrage at the legerdemain of politicians to essentially recognize the validity of the article. Thus, if the article is correct - and I’ve seen no one dispute its facts or reasoning - then that means the folks voting against the measure were, in effect, voting to keep us from getting a tax cut without any effective tradeoff - ie, voting the increase down would not have changed the broken system.I welcome being further educated on this issue, but it concerns me that the Republicans who voted with the liberal Dems to defeat this measure would have done nothing but prevent tax relief. I understand that people like Sen. Patrick may be willing to deny me my money to make a point about the spending cap, but isn’t government thinking it had a right to my money one of the things he railed against? So he too thinks he has a superior right to my money because he is now in a position to play games with it? This bothers me a great deal. - willsin Says:

Actually, as our bulbs have burned out I have replaced them with the florescent ones. The light is cleaner, cooler and the bulbs last 10 times as long. If you buy the multi packs at Sams they are about $1 a bulb. Plus I have reduced my wattage from 4000 watts to about 700 with the same or more light. Our home was built with about 25 recessed light cans in the ceiling that contained 125 watt flood bulbs. The kitchen and family room was always very hot when they were on. Now with the fluorescents the rooms are cool and the ac doesnt need to run as much. My electric bills have never been lower. I am sold on them. - Robert Headford Says:

Nonsense. I oppose mandating CFLs for the reasons above — that the Chron is liberal has nothing to do with it. Heck, John Howard is conservative and I oppose his view on the issue as well. I supported Perry, but was outraged over the whole HPV vaccine mandate. I oppose these ideas because they’re examples of government overreaching.
- gregg Says:
February 27th, 2007 at 9:36 am e
No problem Owen, you can buy which ones you want. Do you wish you could still buy leaded gas? Or paint that contains lead? How bout insulation that contains asbestos? Can you still buy or use a rotary phone?Just saying at some point we cant keep building power plants. If energy can be reduced with just changing technology then I dont think its a bad thing. - jpn4022 Says:
February 27th, 2007 at 11:27 am e
Have you tried them? I have them running in about 60% of the house now, and will switch others out as the bulbs burn out.
“Soft white” fluorescents exist, they’re just like incandescent bulbs in their spectrum.
As far as the flicker goes, “they flicker imperceptibly”.
Hmmm, imperceptible means you can’t see it.
So, if you can’t see it, how is that a problem?
Mine don’t flicker.
Put a lampshade on the bulb, and they’re just as good as any other.
They even have floodlamps, spotlights, and 3-way bulbs now, all of which use a fraction of the power, and produce just as much light, for example, floodlamps in the back yard produce the equivalent of 500 watts of light, using 50 watts of juice.
You should actually TRY something before slamming it out of ignorance. - ThunderHawkk Says:

jpn4022,As I’ve said before, I do use a few CFLs. As for their light quality being comparable, I’ve never seen it. I’ve even run the bulbs through a tiffany fixture, and the quality is still poor. You can’t hide that the light is, in fact, fluorescent, and therefore of poor quality. Lampshades definitely don’t help, so don’t try and tell me otherwise. The imperceptible flicker can be a problem as it is part of what leads to migraines; you can’t see it, but it affects you nonetheless. - gregg Says:
February 27th, 2007 at 2:07 pm e
Owen, we switched over to them, my house is cooler, my electric bills are lower, I dont have to change burned out bulbs very often,I have noticed no change in our quality of light life. Reply to No. 13: Jon’s been on the radio for a long time. You can’t be a phony for that long without your true colors coming to the surface. He was very compassionate about his conservative beliefs without being overtly religious about it. That was one of the things I liked about him when I listened to him. You knew he made the Crummyicle mad by the way they covered his legal problems. I’ve heard of stories about what they do to people like him in prison, maybe his age (61) will play in his favor. Only Jon and his maker know why he turned out this way. Good luck, Jon, your going to need it. - animalplanet Says:

Well, David you got your wish. I knew Jon. I worked with Jon. Go figure what happened. How do you figure that a reasonably intelligent person and a talented radio person could sink to this. Who knows what demons he was able to repress when he was riding high on the conservative talk show wave. I don’t know that I would say Jon was compassionate about his conservative beliefs. Passionate to be sure. But he made no bones about it - ask him and he’d tell you - he was “doing the show.” So, maybe the lesson here for conservative standard bearers is - don’t get so full of your self that you lose yourself. And for people on the other side of the “box” - don’t look to conservative personalities to show you the way - seek it for yourself. - The Deacon Says:

I assume thet Jon got his start on this slippery slope, when he started using a computer and going on the internet. Obviously he has become afflicted by the power of his choices at that time. Nevertheless, the things I learned from Jon will forever be part of me. I did not know so many things about the Constitution and the Right of a JuryIto nullify a conviction. I hope that he and others with similar problems are able, with God’s help, to extricate themselves from the swamp of depravity. So here’s my “Top Ten” list of explanations for that electricity use:1) He’s growing his own marijuana plants.2) He’s doing Frankenstein-like experiments, trying to put life into himself.3) He’s staying up night and day trying to recount those Florida votes and checking those “hanging chads”.4) He’s doing “global warming” experiments, melting model cities.5) He’s trying to get a tan so that he’s doesn’t look like a dead stiff.6) He’s scared of the dark.7) He’s maintaining a climate suitable for running around the house in the nude.
He’s watching “his” Oscar winning movie, over and over again.9) He’s working on his 2008 Presidental campaign.
10) He just forgot to turn off the lights.

If Al purchases all of his power with a “green energy contract” then that seems like he is “walking the talk”. Considering the great possibilities that Texas is already exploiting for “no-CO2″ wind energy, I’m a little surprised at the comments I see here. Clearly, the issue isn’t “moral” enough for him to change his behavior. I have this Global Warming thing figured out. The Earth has a mini global warming all time. It goes from cold to hot and hot to cold. The call it a YEAR. Substitute a thousand years for a month and this is the Global Warming everyone is talking about. == Aren’t you glad I explained that. - Smacktle Says:

Trolling is a fine art. It is more fun getting the boot for arguing a point without the insults. Anyone can do the name calling stuff. It is more fun to get banned because of views or illustrating absurdity with absurdity. Al Gore is my favorite subject. Anyone (Smacktle) can go anywhere and drop an f-bomb. - FourAlarm Says:

Cycling back home one night from a jaunt for a Strombolli my rides’ front wheel caught a crack between lanes of the pavement. It’s amazing how quickly things turn bad. Went down and woulda cracked my mellon right there on Shepherd save the helmet on my noggin. Handle bar jab into the ribs was the only painful outcome.Protection’s out there, guys. Use the damn stuff. Vest, seatbelt, helmet, life jacket, condom… whatever it is. If you think you’d ever come home to your sweetie gladly proclaiming “I’m sure glad I wasn’t wearing a ______” then leave it at home. It’ll be there for your widow to hand to your replacement when he leaves the house. - RickG Says:

We will once again see the anomaly of law enforcement organizations coming out against law-abiding citizens’ right to protect themselves, and the national media ridiculing Texas as a “cowboy” state.None of that bothers me. What bothers me is whether the PC movement in the full house or Senate will nanny-state the bill to death or whether Gov. Perry will veto it because he did not want to look the mother of a shot-dead burglar in the eye and say he could have prevented it. - tedtam Says:

As far as a “Cowboy State”… correct me if I’m wrong, but nobody ever robbed a cowboy…Will the Brady Bunch Against Hand Rubbing Violets ensure 100% that my family and I will never, ever get robbed, burgled, raped, unlwafully sodomized, penetrated, violated, or victimized? Until then, I’ll keep my 1911 Model Colt handy, and a fresh magazine ready to slap in when the one in the gun runs dry.Two in the chest and one in the head. Repeat as necessary. - RickG Says:

Remember when states first started to consider, and then pass, concealed carry laws? There was great wailing and there were somber predictions of daily bloodbaths and massacres in every city where such barbaric practices were allowed.Still waiting. - DennisOnTheRight Says:

RickG, it was actually better than that: crime rates fell. That was to be expected, of course, since perps suddenly had to consider the possibility that the government hadn’t disarmed the victim in advance, but it certainly proved to be difficult for the Sarah Brady crowd and the liberal media to explain. - malcolm Says:

Dude: Re #14 They could have done just about anything they wanted to do when they controlled both the house, senate and the oval office but blew it! I ask myself Why?
I almost gagged when I saw GWB talking about the initiatives for fat kids. Yikes! Talk about an about face.

#14 Dude RE: Limp RepublicansDeserved criticisms aside, the ultimate reason Newt Gingrich was so admired in the 1990’s was because he is a fighter, with a capital F. Two very simple things: (1) He clearly and repeatedly explains his beliefs and (2) Newt will slash and burn to win. He doesn’t apologize or equivocate. He is not afraid to speak the truth as he sees it and doesn’t care how outrageous the MSM tries to characterize his positions. Newt uses them in a way no other conservative but Reagan did. - texpat Says:

So DJ is lambasting Newt for being a quitter while simultaneously espousing that we quit hoping for the Republican party to rebuild itself like he has. More of that anarchist/nihilist cognitive dissonance I suppose. Maybe it’s just one of those cat people/dog people things. - gregg Says:

I get a kick when Hillary talks about her opponents using the tactic of personal destruction. Uhh, wasnt she the architect of that strategery? Everytime a Bill bimbo would pop up she would have that woman destroyed. She is like a mafia boss except with bigger testicles.

I like the way duhmoose thinks. I’m gonna write him in for Prez next time around…
I’ve noticed that the quality of posts have improved since folks are all vying to get on the “comments of the week” list.
(As for Matt’s comment above. “ahem”…)
I guess my comments are just too sophisticated and highbrow for the great unwashed to comprehend, otherwise I know some of my comments would have been included. I know, appealing to the lowest common denominator, blah, blah, blah…
Hamous seems to know almost as much about music as he does about politics. Probably a big fan of rap music.
They like me, they really like me!
I didn’t realize hamous posted so much on this site. Does he ever log off?
One thing is for sure George Strait’s acting and singing are better than Mr.Hamous’stands on issues - remember the BPA. Mr.Hamous, serge and epoc missed by a mile. Ol’ Ed has got the facts before he starts not a loud mouth being shot off to increase Global Warming.
Mr. Hamous does not log off he is a liberal living on the taxpayer sweat.
Back in the barrel, I see.
gabbyboy - Don’t care for rap, but coming from a Marxist such as yourself I’ll take that as a compliment!
No Higher Intelligence - I thought I was back in your good graces! I’m not sure where you come up with me and Sarge being in Eric’s camp on the BPA. From the beginning I have always said that they should, preferably, win on appeal and if not, be pardoned. Eric wants them executed. But if it makes you feel good, go for it
It never ceases to amaze me how a little bit of fun can cause so much envy in some.
I have finally made “the list”. Life is good.
I can do this and not wear pants!
Comment-of-the-Week Envy; I wonder what Freud would say about that. Gotta go. There’s a bell ringing and I’m starting to drool all over myself.
Hamous,
They were tried and convicted by a jury of their peers, they got the sentence everyone’s elected representative voted for and I believe the vote was near unanimous.
Initially, I felt they deserved the 18 month deal Sutton originally offered them, but seeing that they lied repeatedly, they got what they were given and I’m okay with that.
