Ha, hello, down under! Just got back from Anderson Fair, you ever make there? I mean, when you were here, of course.

  4. Matt 'Zilla' Bramanti, CPO™ on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:12 am

    Third. Ha!™

I’m gonna fire up the grill this weekend, too. Bought a gas grill for ZillaHQ™ a year ago and I still haven’t swapped out the dummy gas cylinder yet.

    /shame

  5. Matt 'Zilla' Bramanti, CPO on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:14 am

    Aw hell.

    Fourth. And fifth. Ha!™

    You’re fired, Bigjolly.

  6. bigjolly on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:22 am

Ha, been there, done that! And still, the Bigjolly is Numero Uno!

    Yeah baby!

  7. DennisOnTheRight on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:24 am

Hey, I’m hearing that Bob Eckels is going to be at the HREC meeting Monday evening supposedly to get input from the precinct chairs on picking his replacement. The skeptic in me says it will really be for him to try to push Ed Emmett down our throats and so he can claim to have discussed it with the grassroots.

So, what does the pajama blog crack research squad have to say on Emmett? What skeletons is he trying to hide? Who has pictures of him with a sheep? Is he a Perrysite? Joined at the hip to TxDOT? What bad (or good) legislation did he push when he was a state rep?

    Thanks to all in advance!

EDITORIAL FIAT TO BIGJOLLY: Fetch me a beer, NewGuy™.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

  9. bigjolly on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:33 am

Um, would that be a Foster’s or a Heineken keg can?

EDITORIAL FIAT CONTINUED: I don’t drink sissy-mary Eurotrash beer or savage Aussie piss! St. Arnold’s Spring Bock, dammit!

So hard to find good help these days…

  11. Wino on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:50 am

You’ve obviously never had a Crown Lager. Now, VB is made from kangaroo piss.

  12. bigjolly on March 3rd, 2007 at 12:55 am

Wino, you remember the name of that local beer in Trinidad? That was good stuff. A bit light but good.

  13. Wino on March 3rd, 2007 at 3:22 am

I’ve never been to Trinidad, bigjolly. I try to check out the local beers everywhere I go. That’s been a slight problem here in Saudi Arabia, though… less than a week to go, and I’m coming home!

  14. sunny on March 3rd, 2007 at 3:39 am

#11…How dare you, Wino!!!! VB is made by the same people who make Crown Lager! And you know how good Crown Lager tastes!

#10…Matt…there is nothing savage about our Aussie piss! It’s the best piss in the world!

I’m hurt to the core that you would think that way, Matt…let alone express those feelings in the written word! ;)

You Americans are the sissys! You don’t know a good beer when you try one! You have ’sissy’ beer up there!!!!!!!!!! ;)

  15. sunny on March 3rd, 2007 at 3:43 am

And one last word on the subject (or words)…us Aussies are the best pisses in the world…we take the piss out of everyone! Hehehehe!

  16. Wino on March 3rd, 2007 at 4:36 am

VB stands for “Very Bad,” Sunny. What they do is feed the Crown Lager to the kangaroos, then collect the kangaroo piss and put it in the VB bottles.

  17. sunny on March 3rd, 2007 at 4:44 am

    Chug-a-lug, everyone…have a great, celebratory weekend!

#16…well, crikey, mate…it comes out pretty bloody good at the other end! ;) Not a bad filter!

  18. sunny on March 3rd, 2007 at 4:48 am

Seeing the quality of Aussie beer is on question here…I am forced to post this here!! I wrote it a while back…but I’ve been placed in a corner here…and I need to fight back…kicking and screaming!! Enjoy! It’s not often I’m so generous of spirit! ;)

    “Fair Dinkum, Mate!

I just blew in from the back of Bourke, out west of Bullamakanka, way out the back of beyond. And struth! Who should I run into first off, but the town bike! She was looking a bit agro with her couple of ankle biters she had with her. Seems like she didn’t have a brass razoo to rub together and the biters were screaming for some lollies. She told them to cop it sweet or bugger off! I think she’s a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock, to be honest with you. I told her to turn it up and get her arse into gear. The kids were only being kids. She settled in for a bit of a chinwag but I was feeling a bit crook and wasn’t up for an ear-bashing. I’ve been flat out like a lizard drinking lately and feeling like a bit of a fruit cake. Thought I was going to cark it there for a while. I came a gutsa in the back yard and I got a gympy leg out of it. I might settle for a hair of the dog and get a full as a boot, I think! I’m on Shank’s pony, so she’ll be right. The booze bus won’t have Buckley’s chance with me!

So, I told the Sheila I’d choof off as I wanted to be on my Pat Malone while I went for a Bo-peep at the drongo…he’s a few tinnies short of a slab, as well. She waffled on a bit and started to get up my nose and threw a bit of a wobbly. Anyhow mate, she’ll be apples, I blew through. She’s too much of a wombat for me!

Strike me lucky! I think I might go and catch a few yabbies later, better than watching aerial ping-pong. I went bush-bashing the other day. You should give it a burl sometime or other.

Well, see yewse all…I’m going to go put the billy on. The tide’s gone out. Thanks for listening to my yarn.”

  19. gtotracker on March 3rd, 2007 at 5:45 am

    Sunny,
VB-Victoria Bitter? Something else to look for in Spec’s. The Foster’s we get here is bottled in Canada so I don’t think it counts as ‘real’ Foster’s. Coopers Ale, though, comes straight from down under. Even better, Coopers markets a line of home brew products carried here at the DeFalcos store and I make my own.

  20. sunny on March 3rd, 2007 at 5:58 am

Good for you, Gto…keep buying Coopers and making your own! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. :)

I don’t think the Canucks can bottle as good as we Aussies can! ;)

The worst beer I remember from my yoot: Iron City. It was bad enough that my parents had renamed it with an “Sh” in place of the “C” in “City” (and added an extra “t” but I won’t split hairs).

Last night it was Sierra Nevada Porter for me. That beer is anything but **itty. It certainly ain’t no sissy beer either.

    The Dude
Iron City is nasty fo sho. Thye absolute worst beer I have ever drank is rauchbier. When I lived in the land of “1500″ beers (Germany) I probably tried 600 or so in a four year period.

This one http://www.schlenkerla.de/indexe.html ranked on the bootom of my faves frankly because it tasted rank. Rauchbier or smoke beer is a heavy dark beer and tastes like bbq smoke smells. I did not destroy to many brain cells drinking that stuff, although it did cause me to have a hangover that hit a 9 on the richter scale.

  28. The Dude on March 3rd, 2007 at 9:03 am

Ugh, smokebeer. I’ve read about that one before and it doesn’t even sound appealing. Another one I did try that didn’t go over too well with me was a cerano pepper beer. I can’t remember the name of it, but it came from some place in New Mexico. I like peppers and I like beer, but I don’t like peppers in beer.

When I was stationed in Iceland, we had no draft beer. Beer was illegal in Iceland since Prohibition times and they never legalized it until 1989 or so. You could get $50.00 for a case of Bud or Miller off base, we paid about $5.00.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition
Anyway, on the Navy base all we could get was bottled beer. They had a great variety in the package store, and this is where I was exposed to many German beers that I still love today. Being from here, I was suprised that there was more than Miller and Budweiser (Shiner being the exception). Finally, the enlisted club got draft beer and it was Bitburger. MMMMMM…Bitburger. I was introduced to some Czech Budvar (Budweiser) once when a P-3 full of mental case German sailors came over and we all went partying. I’m lucky to be alive! They had brought over a ton of the Budvar which is the original Budweiser. It was pretty good. American beers are weak and watery ever since tasting what beer is supposed to be. One of these days I’ll try to home brew!

I’m grillin’ some ribeyes and filets….. better get started marinating!

Where’s the outrage at the way our military personnel are being treated?? I thought that 99% of the people on this site supported our troops or was that just lip service

I’m mad as hell and want more of the command staff to be relieved of duty.

Sunny, when I moved to Houston in ‘72 I had a friend from Sidney. We were both single and cruised the bars together. There was never a problem drawing a crowd of girls. All he had to do was start talking and they would gather around to listen to him talk. Best pick up line I ever saw, just let him start laying it on thick. I learned real quick to not call hime a limey.

Being as how we’re in Texas and NOT california, would finding a million rounds of ammunition on somebody’s property be reason for sending them to a psych eval, or awarding him with a medal for doing a Public service?

It shouldn’t have gotten that way in the first place, but typical gov’t efficeincy is in effect… regardless of party.

The son of some friends of mine was wounded by an IED yesterday in Iraq. Details are still sketchy but the info so far is he lost his legs, a kidney, and has some pretty bad burns. He has apparently been flown to Germany and may be in San Antonio in a couple of weeks. Two soldiers and an interpreter died in the attack. Please keep these brave men and their families in your prayers.

It’s the ultimate result of relying on a a “Big Government Program,” which brings with it poor spending policy, Poltically Correct hiring and firing practices, mis management brought on by Congressional meddling and bureaucratic maliase, and neglect and lack of funding that reflects an attitude that people who don’t give a rat’s ass about soldiers during peacetime, and are then shocked that we’re not “ready” when a war happens.

So how many rounds of ammo DOES it take to be in need of a psych eval?

That guy in California had to get one b/c he had a million rounds.

So, is it a million rounds, 500K, 100K–what?

His was also a mix of shotgun and “assault rifle” ammo—does that matter?

Or was it just the tunnel? Does digging a tunnel and then putting a million stuffed bears in it qualify? What if you have thousands of stuffed bears, but they’re not in a tunnel?

    Does this explain Headshaker?

++FireSociety petition to remove Johnny Sutton
++Exclusive interview with 4th Sutton victim

    Daniel,

As you may know, the breaking news this week on the Ramos and Compean case is that Johnny Sutton intentionally withheld the fact that the drug smuggler got caught smuggling a second load of marijuana worth about $1 million right before this case went to trial. Grassfire is joining members of Congress in calling for a mistrial and the
immediate release of Ramos and Compean.

We also believe it’s time for Sutton to be removed. A Grassfire team member just started a petition on FireSociety.com that calls for
Johnny Sutton’s removal. There are only a few thousand signers right now, but I’d like to see that petition grow to the tens of thousands.

AUSTIN — A protest against toll roads highlighted a rally on the Capitol steps Friday, but the Texas Independence Day holiday put folks in the mood to raise hell about other grievances as well.
Many also complained about a national animal identification tag. Some grumbled about the state’s loss of control of its borders. A few warned about the coming “North American Union.” And some excoriated the United Nations for wanting “to take your gun,” exhorting anyone within earshot to “get us out of the U.N.”

    Squawk:

    Your first article said this:

What if the actual truth was far more ominous than that, and involved a military style, direct assault operation inside of the United States? Could the seizure of those weapons have preempted a large scale attack on a jail inside the US designed to free a Mexican drug kingpin? Americans might be surprised that the rural area of upstate New York and Vermont served as the staging area for a similar “rescue” attempt of the nephew of Pablo Escobar, jailed in Canada during the 1980’s.

Which is nothing more than “What if?” and the pics showed several weapons leaning against a wall and a bunch of empty magazines. It gave no good info on the type of weapons, just a scary scenario—with little or no fact to base that scenario upon.

    Big frikkin whoop, says I.

You then send another that says:

Although the origin of the shipment is unclear, it is vividly obvious that areas along the U.S.-Mexican border are as much war zones as transshipment points. Matamoros has long been recognized as a vital choke point for the shipment of drugs, weapons and illegal aliens, including Islamic terrorists, into the United States from Mexico. Based on the sophistication of the weapons seized earlier this month, it is apparent that a battle is shaping up just across the border from Brownsville – one that will undoubtedly have ominous implications for those protecting our southern border.

I don’t dispute that, and did not—I just commented on the article—it gave no fact, only a scary “What if?”

    Much better information.

Statfor gives us the best inforamtion, because it is both more creidble, and it gives us a credible analysis combined with credilbe information to shore up that analysis with:

The semi, which was registered in the United States, entered Matamoros from the south after having passed through both Ciudad Victoria and Valle Hermoso. It is unclear where the shipment originated, though it could have come from Central America, or even the United States along a circuitous route designed to avoid police roadblocks and other anti-smuggling measures. Putting soldiers on the streets of Ciudad Victoria, even for a few hours, might have been President Felipe Calderon’s way of telling the cartels that authorities know what is going on there.

    snip

One indication of this is the type of weapons and equipment seized. The identical assault vests, load-bearing equipment and other accessories, along with the standardized nature of the rifles — exclusively variants of the M-16 — indicate the shipment probably was meant to equip or reinforce a single heavily armed unit rather than an unorganized gang. Therefore, the Zetas — former Mexican elite soldiers who work for the Gulf cartel as enforcers — stand out as the mostly likely intended recipient of these weapons. Given their military background, the Zetas would want to have a high degree of standardization in the weapons and equipment they use, and they also would be more comfortable with M-16s, which are standard issue in the Mexican army.

Matamoros is a vital transshipment point, or “plaza,” for the movement of drugs and other contraband into the United States from Mexico. From border towns like Matamoros that sit astride highways, high-ranking cartel members known as gatekeepers control the traffic of contraband across the border, collect payments from smugglers and oversee money-laundering operations for the cartels.

    OK—

So Mexican drug gangs are gearing up to shoot each other—–a lot—-

    BFD

It’s nothing more than SOS with those guys and I say good frikkin riddance.

Spent a lot of time watching the races here. I was at Nellis AFB for two years.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits adjacent to the runways of Nellis Air Force Base, home of the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force’s Flight Demonstration Team. The Thunderbirds typically do the fly-over for Sunday’s ceremonies at the speedway, but those fans who opt to spend the whole weekend at the track are apt to see a copy of every type of aircraft in the U.S. arsenal.

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/03/nascar_aint_pc.html

The track hosted many events durring the year, and I was at most of them.

    Algoreaphobia (a poem)

    Marsha Megehee

    It’s said, I have Algoreaphobia.
I’m causing the Earth to get hot!
From the Gulf Coast to Zenobia, I
‘m giving it all that I’ve got!

First I’ll put corks in my cattle,
Think that would be a good start,
Should clear the air in Seattle,
Stop holes in the Ozone from fart!

Then I’d pay Algore a visit
Ask him what Al Gore would do?
    Fill the sky with mirrors?
    Plug elephants and Rhinos too?

Cool the hot air in Washington?
    Where nothing ever gets done.
Or get a federal grant for the light bill
    Of Tennessee’s favorite son?

Latest news on Mark - He is still in Germany. A team of doctors from San Antonio specializing in burns is being dispatched to Germany to bring him back to San Antonio probably sometime this week. Most of his family live in Lafayette, LA and will be here to give him all the love he will need during his recovery. He’s a good, strong kid and will be fine. He just got married last fall to a wonderful girl that will be by his side.

Thanks for all the prayers and don’t forget to keep the families of the three men who lost their lives in your prayers as well.

Ed Emmett served in the state house in the 80’s I think from round rock

He was on the Interstate Commerce Commission and until May 2003 President of the NITL

Here is Ed Emmett in his own words discussing rail mergers:

Edward M. Emmett, president of the National Industrial Transportation League, was a key witness, and he laid down four guidelines that he said NITL wanted written into the Interstate Commerce Act during the ICC sunset debate:

“1) Require that railroads compete with one another and not just with other modes of transportation. 2) Change the rail merger review process to focus on the anti-competitive aspects of a merger, and to provide the Department of Justice a more direct role in the rail merger process. 3) Require that any agreements between railroads regarding trackage rights, overhead rights, and haulage agreements be made part of the public record. 4) Require the proposed merger of the UP and SP to be conducted under these new guidelines.”

Emmett reiterated the League’s position that reviews of rail mergers should be transferred to the Department of Justice and made subject to “antitrust laws and not the current rail merger provisions of the Staggers Act.”

  82. EricPJohnson on March 4th, 2007 at 9:04 am

    also comment on Emmett

Ed Emmett has a long and honorable history of effectively representing the League’s shipper interests in Washington, and no one who has read the testimony at last month’s hearing can doubt that some shippers have some legitimate concerns

Posted this at an endless handwringing Conservative blog who is spending way too much time worrying about Ann

    Bryan, Michelle

Politics has entered the serious stage, gone are the lightweight candidates like in Maryland and Virginia, gone are the gentle people who are going to debate “civilized” opposition who has supporters rioting in the streets and the net

    Clue:

the opposition makes Huey Long look like a choirboy and they have delusions of grandeur.

Ann was just toughening up the room.

2008 nasty down and dirty - bring it on baby.

question are you on board? or we can continue this discussion in line getting our nationalized healthcare or filling up our “Greenmobiles” at the national oil company.

Big hint - you and Michelle are the first to go - you’ll be legislated right off the webpage if they have the golden three in 08.

    Eric,

Ann Coulter could become the best fund raiser that the DNC can call upon, much like Hillary Clinton was once the best fund raiser that the RNC had for years. Just what the Republicans need at this time…Someone to rally the troops on the other side.

See how quick all three of the Republican front runners ran to her defense. Even Newt is remaining silent, but then again he has a gay sister and gasp! VP Cheney has a gay daughter. Her comments are what they are….tasteless and crude.

Tossing insults detracts from the serious philosophical differences and only appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Yes, many from the left do the same and worse, but getting in the mud to wrestle with a pig is a pointless exercise. You get really dirty before you realize the pig enjoys wallering in the mud. All you have to show for your efforts are dirty clothes and the need to take a shower.

Ann Coulter is a writer who has a conservative bent. As far as I know she has nothing to do with the Republican party. Thats like saying the late Molly Ivans was good for raising money for Republicans because she called us names and wrote nasty articles about Republicans etc.

Maybe if we can’t get our resident DC thieves to rescind said tax - perhumps we can force them to use the proceeds only to accelerate development of the Alberta oil sands which could definitely put us in the position to tell the Saudi’s to DRINK their dang crude…….

Not to disparage Sarge here but what he missed is that it is not beyond the real possibility that those guys were preparing to come to Houston and try to spring that drug lord that is in jail there.

Sarge mentioned what ifs. Well what if there are more vehicles and weapons being prepared to be brought into this country for who knows what?

The story has further convinced me that it is no longer a question of if but when attacks that we see in Israel begin here in the states. There is no way possible to search every tractor trailer rig that cross the border. In California alone there are 7000 rigs that cross daily and that number is about to triple overnight. Less than 1 percent are searched at the border and less than 5 percent are searched by rolling weigh stations.

How do I know all this? I was a trucker for years.

  95. sargevining on March 4th, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Not to disparage Sarge here but what he missed is that it is not beyond the real possibility that those guys were preparing to come to Houston and try to spring that drug lord that is in jail there.

I used Occam’s Razor, Squawk. The simplest and most logical explanation is usually the one that fits. A fight between Mexican Drug Lords is the most logical explanation.

Besides, there’s no need tosmuggle weapons, ammo, and gear into this country. Everything in that story but the weapons can be bought over the internet and delivered right to your door.

And the weapons, if limited to semi-auto, can be bought by any citizen.

    Ask me how I know.

That’s why the fight between drug lords is the most logical explanation.

    Further reenfocing that is this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Mexico

The Constitution of 1917 (Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos de 1917), the current constitution in force and heavily-amended, grants Mexican citizens (and, theoretically, perhaps, all inhabitants) the right to possess firearms. However, this right does not include military firearms suitable for use in a militia, unlike in the United States where the Second Amendment is often interpreted as only protecting arms suitable for use in militias.

That means you can buy anything like this:

    http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/sargevining/ar.jpg

In Mexico, thus, the likelyhood that weapons like these being smuggled INTO Mexico FROM the USA is much, much greater than it would be the other way around, simply becuase they are legal here, and not legal there.

Logic—it keeps me from having the bejabbers scared out of me.

  96. sargevining on March 4th, 2007 at 1:31 pm

    crap—blockquotes got me again.

    correction:

That means you can buy anything like this:

    http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/sargevining/ar.jpg

    should read:

That means you CAN’T buy anything like this:

    in Mexico

it’s already here in huge quantities and perfectly legal to buy and own.

If I wanted to smuggle in a bomb, I’d put it on a ship and then land it on a deserted beach on a rubber boat—or if it was a nuke, I’d just steam the damting into any port and set it off.
