Channel 13’s longtime weatherman Ed Brandon announced his retirement over the weekend. The really interesting thing is how he did it — not on TV or in Houston’s Leading Information Source™, but on a blog. Channel 13 producer Mike McGuff has the scoop, and a really interesting interview.
It covers everything from Brandon’s days at the University of Texas to his current heart problems. Definitely worth a read. As for Brandon’s future plans? Here’s what he says:
I don’t know exactly what I want to do. I’m not going to quit doing anything. I’d go crazy if I didn’t do something. I would love to do a little talk show stuff on radio if anybody was interested. I’m really interested in the blog business because I spend a lot of my time online and my home page is the Drudge Report because it links to everybody else.
I go to your blog and I go to blogHOUSTON and Lone Star Times. I go to right wing blogs, I go to left wing blogs. I’m fascinated by the Internet, that’s why I wanted to talk about this on the blog instead. I’m not the kind of person that wants to put out a press release and say here’s what I’m doing. It just seems a little egocentric.

Well, who is going to take his place?
*sniffles* He will be missed…but is that cool or what that he reads this blog!! Hey if you read this Mr. Ed I am a BIG amateur meteorologist and I’ve grown up watching you on the weather since 13 seems to be the household’s channel (and before you feel really old or something I’m only 21)…I will definitely miss seeing you there!!
Vlou
Meteorologist Tim Heller, already working at Channel 13 will take the post.
Radar, channel 2’s weather dog ought to be able to handle it. He’s at least as accurate as Ed and the rest.
I, too, have wondered what I will do when I retire. I know one thing, I have to keep active because that keeps one young at heart. Good luck, Ed, I, too, have watched you forever. Channel 13 has been my source of news viewing. It’s a good thing your not a “hang around” like Marvin Zindler whose so-called reporting has gotten stale and I consider him the only down side of Channel 13.
I need to call my husband! He says the weathermen ALWAYS get it wrong, so here’s his big chance! HA
#5 C’mon, give ol’ Marvin a break, he is a Houston icon!! I always watch his rat & roach report to know what eateries to avoid.
Reply to No. 6: Other channels have “rat & roach” reports and I think you are suppose to be able to get that information from the city’s website. And you probably should go to the one’s that are reported to have problems because unless they are still closed for cleaning, they are probably cleaner, now, than most.
Ed who?
NEVER watch local news. Been here over 15 years.
I completely fail to see the attraction. Breaking news is not an apartment fire or a high speed chase.
umm…everyone forget about Ed’s “little” problem I guess…

It is right there in his interview. Click on the link.

Absofreakinglutely amazing that YOU would bring that OLD and I mean really OLD news up. So what?
Cripes I sure pray to gawduhhhh your misteps in life never make it into the news to be brought up everytime you pass gas.
Good luck Ed! Wow! Ed and Edd read LST. I guess I should dress a little better before I post…
Retire? I get to retire when they throw dirt over my coffin. sigh….
#11…I’m not talking about his “nose candy” enjoyment…I may be privy to something are you not
Oh really? Please enlighten us….CYA for your “Pryor” remark? Enquiring minds want to know, as well as Ed Brandon, I’m fo sho….
Yeah yeah “left is wrong”. I heard the same stuff and it was unfounded and unproven and unprosecuted then and now.
The only privy you have over me is what is in your back yard.
Dang Squawk, I missed that memo…
Errrr, you don’t know what’s buried in my back yard, do ya? My 2nd ex-husband left the country. That’s all I know. I don’t care if he doesn’t give me child support…..It’s o.k….I can do without…Those bones are from an old horse that died. yeah, yeah…Want a cuban cigar?
YES
In other words “lefty” all accusations and charges were dropped. Missed that bit of info didn’t you.
Can’t you children take your trash some place else?
When I was in the sixth grade at St. Marks on Bellaire, a very long time ago, Ed spoke to our class about…….weather. I learned a very important leason that day. When he was finished, he pointed to me and said, “don’t you have a question, you haven’t asked one yet”? He scared the living daylights out of me, and put me on the spot. Lesson:If someone isn’t speaking, maybe they are doining something……like listening.
well i have caught these inuendos. and i think everyone is innocent until proven guilty eccept i need a dinner jacket.
so if ed comes here and he did it and was never convicted of it - he has to live with it - not you or me - right?
if your guilty and you know it you are and you will always fell it!!!!!
so we will all live with our sins to mankind.
o
lord knows i commited mine!!! but not what the inferences are here - so have at our crimes - life does forgive and should - not all folks do however!!

Good points all. I do not “know” if Brandon did “anything” at all, however his initial departure from 13 News was for his drug related problem and I remember well the rumor mill that ensued.
Having seen and listened to “his story” in person I detected a man that was at peace with himself, his God and the powers that be.
If he was guilty of anything more than what he himself has talked about, I do not believe KTRK would have hired him back…..EVER.
Regarding Ed’s past indescretions, please read Rorschack’s posts about him. http://www.bloghouston.net/
Hey, I just noticed something… When exactly did KHOU Channel 11 stop sponsoring the Sid Lasher (memorial) Golf Tournament? (for you Houston newbies, he was also a weatherman here) Bet not too many here ‘remember’.
Ever since the news “came out” about him, he gave me the heebiegeebies.
And again I will point out
1. the accusations were never substantiated
2. the man was never prosecuted
3. if he had indeed been guilty channel 13 never would have hired him back EVER.
and now I will also add that it is not unusal for celebrities, any celebrity, to pay off people to make things go away.
Furthermore considering the accusations why has there never been any “more” accusations? These type of things just don’t go away, they always seem to rear their ugly heads again and again.
The Squawk must be Ed’s agent…

The first time I ever called a radio talk show was to 700 AM KSEV, to Ed Brandon. That was back in the summer of ‘89 (or ‘90). The topic was aborton and the hypocrisy of the media in showing graphic images of everything else except of the abortionists’ handiwork.
I was glad when he went back to work as a weatherman.
He was gentle and soft spoken; unassuming. His demeanor was of one who had gone through suffering. I guess
Wish Ed the best

Sorry I got testy with you. No I am not Brandon’s agent LOL.
Brandon was never convicted of anything. Only accused. Everything was dropped. You mentioned “what about his other problem”. No matter who it is I tire of the “well he was accused” so let’s drag the individual’s name to the lowest level possible.
