Probably not but it is encouraging to see him talking about tax cuts and spending reductions again.
Gov. Rick Perry renewed his push Wednesday for additional property tax cuts and tighter restraints on state spending, acknowledging that those efforts have been slow to catch on during the first four months of the legislative session.
Slow to catch on? A bit of an understatement to say the least. Tax cuts, spending reductions and appraisal cap discussions are about as popular in this legislature as Sheryl Crow is with Mr. Whipple.
“If the session were to be over with today, we could point to precious few accomplishments on behalf of the taxpayers,” Perry said. “Outside of continuing the property tax cuts of the last session and passage of budgets in the two chambers, budgets that don’t spend every dime available, taxpayers have pretty much been shut out.”
But once again, Darth Vader rears his ugly head to stop any talk of tax reductions.
“I want to provide as much tax relief as we can,” Dewhurst said. “But it appears at the present time . . . absent a dramatic upturn in our revenues, that we wouldn’t have the money to balance our budget and provide a $7 billion a year reduction in local school property taxes for the next biennium if we were to send that $2.5 billion back.”
Does this guy really think he can win the governorship? And is anyone besides me tired of politicians using the argument that it is better to stockpile money today than it is to “give it back” and raise taxes if and when the economic collapse occurs?
At any rate, it is better to hear the governor talking about tax cuts than it is to hear him talking about unproven vaccines or taking land for a giant toll road through the middle of Texas.

No property tax relief - no re-elected incumbants in the next election.
Get as many as we can out in the primary, and any who survive the primary should be voted out in the general election.
IMPEACH PERRY
goodhair will get his highway theft bill and the kickbacks will start rolling in big time. The tax talk and the gun issue are diversions away from continuing to tax us to death, keep illegals jamming up the welfare line and hospitals as well as the schools so the rinos and demos can get larger political contributions.
Perry is still a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Don’t believe anything that “just happens” to be politically correct at the moment.
“All that fancy talk don’t mean doodley-squat” Taxpayers are out here where the rubber meets the road. I’ll believe ANY property tax relief, much less significant property tax relief, when that check I write 12/31/07 is smaller than the one I wrote 12/31/06. Guess what folks, I ain’t holding my breath.
Gov Goodhair speaking about being slow to catch on????
How ironic is this??
Sorry if I’m not convinced of his sincerity…!
Sell-out POS!!
Perry doesn’t fool me.
He’s a lying dog.
well i he retakes 8th grade math and says he agrees and will uphold the party platform maybe - naw naw never will trust him again.
Let’s see… he waits until the legislative session is just about over before he starts talking like a conservative …how convenient.
The only reason that Gov Rick is now talking about doing anything for the taxpayers is because he knows that now nothing can be done for the taxpayers during this session. So, now he can safely go about pandering and sounding like he cares when he was nowhere to be found when we needed him to step forward and lead a movement for the taxpayers this session. Pathetic!
Whoops! A pig just flew outta my butt!
The Gov must have just climbed out of a porta-potty and thinks we would not notice.
#10 And Hades just froze over!
He’ll get another tax cut passed bu it will never be enough until its zero and then you guys will complain about the roads
Eric, we just want an actual tax cut. Not a tax shift, not a tax deferment, an actual cut. You know so the percentage of my income going towards taxes goes down instead of staying the same or going up.
Amen, Duhmoose.
And how about restricting increases on second properties? We have a worthless piece of land in Lago Vista that last year was appraised at $3,000.00 and this year got upped to $14,000.00.
They only raised my neighbors useless lot to $12,000.00.
Some people get off easy.
#13. EPJ, do you own ANY property in Texas? Have you ever owned ANY property in Texas? Do you own a business in Texas? Your heroes need to quit all their schoolyard games and Clintonesque word parsing and do what they said they would do, give the over burdened property taxpayers a meaningful tax cut. Just stop the “revenue neutral”, paid for with an increase in business tax/sales tax” crap and return to the taxpayers their own hard earned money.
Tommy Williams is sending out his BS stating that he’s all for helping us get property tax relief. I guess he figures he can lie to the voters as often as he wishes.
The wonderful thing is we Texans are mad as hell and we are going to do something about it. I would lke to think governor good hair has heard from enough legislatures to know the people are angry, stomping their feet and getting ready for a showdown. Thus we get him to articulate, property tax cut….. he may be lieing but he did say the words. Dewhurst is finished. Anyone that would vote for mr milk toast needs to be talked to.
Hmmmmm…where to begin…
(1) He wants to sell the State Lottery instead of admitting that the funds are being diverted away from public education. I don’t play the lottery, so I can live with that. (2) He wants to legalize all forms of gambling in the state. I don’t gamble, so I can live with that. (3) He wants to build a wall across the border between Texas and Mexico, use the National Guard and the Texas Rangers to patrol it. I take issue with this one because laws are already on the books demanding two forms of identification before hiring someone. These laws are not being enforced. Rather, big business hires illegal immigrants at $2 or less instead of paying the minimum wage. (4) He uses his executive order to vaccinate our eleven year old girls against HPV. Forget the moral teachings of their parents. It’s a Merck Mandate-as it should be. After all, they contributed thousands to the election campaign. (5) He approved of the 19 Coal Plants that TXUEnergy wanted. My issues on this one are too numerous to state here. (6) He approved of the sale of 40 rural newspapers to a foreign company having ties to Cintra-Zachary. Oh my goodness…I forgot about (7) The Trans-Texas Corridor being build and virtually “owned” by the foreign company, Cintra-Zachary for….how many years was it??? I wonder if Governor Perry knows how to spell the word I M P E A C H?
Rick Perry is my Governor.
I have much to fear.
He maketh me to pay a toll tax
On the corridors that cometh near.
He showeth me his fiery Coal Plants
While the threat to my health is clear.
Yea, though I hear his words of soothing
His back-room deals rage on.
His crown and his staff they pusheth me
Towards a future not yet known.
Surely one day we will see him
Put down his crown and throne.
It will be a day of rejoicing!
And we will know that we have won.
This was written some time ago…I can see that I need to lenghten it some.
