A Republican convention in the South is the only venue where Senators Chambliss or Graham would be booed for their stance on immigration reform. Times are changing and just because an issue is important to the right wing base no longer means it is also popular to America at large. A recent CNN poll shows 80% of Americans favor a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already living in the U.S.

A lack of popular understanding - he is probably correct as most people will lack the guts or courage to vote him out of office. I really hope I am wrong and this is only the start of a huge wave of rinos getting turned out of office. This passionate conservative crap makes me want to go to the toilet. But gutlees hutch and can’em cronyn will vote for it you just watch.

Reminds me of the mother watching her son marching in the band at the parade: “would you look at that, everyone is out of step except my Johnny!!”

These pols are just ate up with stupid, or have just completely sold us out, one of the two.

Arrogance…pure and simple! The “bill” is what you get when Ted Kennedy and John McCain are involved. Both are only adept at vote buying. Forty plus years is too long for anyone to serve. For that matter, ten years is too long. I pray this is the final ‘coffin-nail’ in McCain’s bid for President.

#2 Remember that polls can be skewed to come up with the numbers that the polltaker wants. For instance, to get the 80% favor rating CNN probably only polled those homes which contained illegal immigrants. All other indicators that I have seen show that people want the border closed and no amnesty for illegals.

When I called Hutchison and Cornyn’s office to let them know to vote against the bill and be vocal in getting fellow senators to vote against, Cornyn’s rep stated that Cornyn was totally against it. This weekend I read where Cornyn and McCain were in a pi—ing match over this and McCain was furious because Cornyn is “obviously trying to derail the bill”. Go Cornyn!

#11 - Doesn’t seem that the guy is in the army anymore, so would he still be considered a troop?

Saxby, meanwhile, had a fast explanation for the crowd’s reaction - they’re just ignorant!

This is the problem…. not that we are ignorant, but that they think we are.

    dcgirl,

Do not feed the trolls and they will go away. Their entire purpose here is to stir things up and see what reactions they get. No response = no trolling. ;)

WE ARE IGNORANT? Has anyone even read this 300 plus page bill? We do have calculators and we do know math. We can understand that a cost of 2 trillion dollars to our economy is harmful. We need to drive every arrogant incumbant out of office who cannot , today say the words, NO I WILL NOT VOTE FOR THIS BILL.

  16. Peter on May 21st, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Lindsey Graham and Saxby Chambliss are two more politicians who have forgotten the fact that they were voted into office to represent their constituents. With their stance on this immigration bill, they have made a conscious decision to forego the will of the people, whose voice they are were hired to represent, in an attempt to find favor with the press. I just hope there will be a reckoning for both these gentlemen the next time their respective primaries arrive.

With all this immigration legislation fever going on, with emotions running high, I would like to bring up few points and maybe cause few people to think twice about their position on this issue.

People sometimes shut themselves in the foot when acting on emotions. Let me explain.

For few centuries now this country has been welcoming immigrants from all over the world. I am sure most of you can trace your ancestry to one of these immigrants. What these people had in common? They had initiative, they took the risk of leaving everything behind and start anew, they worked hard, raised their families, build this country, loved this land. That’s the American spirit most of you inherited and made this country great.

What happened in the last few decades, there was a shift in the world as well as in the US immigration policy. Most of legal immigrants today are relatives – brothers, sisters, parents of current legal residents and citizens – what we call chain migration. I am asking you – what these people do in order to come to US? They apply at a US embassy and are sponsored by their relatives. Are they taking any risks? Are they running from persecution? Are they people with initiative, willing to sacrifice and work hard to realize the American dream? Maybe, maybe not. In my experience, these people are more likely to come here and expect their relatives and America in general to help them. They think America owes them something because, after all, we brought them here. And more then likely they will take full advantage of social services, benefits, etc.

Who do you think these people will vote for when they become citizens? More than likely they will vote for a party that promises to take care of them – democrats. Why do you think democrats are pushing so hard for family unification? To make sure the future of their party is secure. Do you think they actually care about immigrant families?

So, when we say we don’t have anything against legal immigration, and enforce the current laws, and so on, we better watch out! We may, unwillingly, cheer for the other guys.

Now about illegal immigration. I believe we are a nation of laws and every person should respect these laws. But I also believe these laws, as they are today don’t serve our country in the long run and they have to be changed.

Illegal immigrants (most of them) are hard working people, that sacrifice a lot to come here, they took the risks, they took the initiative. Most of them came here to work, not to take advantage of the system. They knew that while illegal they will not be able to access many of the benefits citizens of this country enjoy, and they came here anyway. I admire many of them for their courage and sacrifice.

But in my opinion, they are closer to American spirit than many legal immigrants are. If I had to choose between a young couple from Guatemala that works hard to realize their American dream on a construction site or in a slaughter house, and a sixty year old Afghanistan couple that came here only because one of their children are American citizens, and they will go straight on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security – I would choose the illegal couple anytime!

I hope this made sense. And I hope we think twice before we embrace one position or another and let emotions run high. This issue is very complicated. I admire Bush and the senators that negotiated this deal for having a broader vision about the future of this country and be able to see beyond election slogans and “seat of the pants” solutions.

It is abundantly clear that the Democrat party would make the illegals “wards” of the country in order to acquire their vote later down the road. I also think that most immigrants can see through the hollow promises of social freedom in this country. They come here “hat in hand” and survive on our social system. Our schools and health care systems are in terrible condition because of this migration. They are here solely due to their courage and our sacrifice.
