It’s remarkable to watch the US Senate “compromise” during the debate on the amnesty bill for illegal aliens. Just take a look at some of the workings on the floor.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, the Missouri Democrat who ran in last year’s election on getting tough on illegal immigration, voted to preserve citizenship rights for alien absconders. So did Sen. Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican, who during last year’s debate co-sponsored the same amendment with Mr. Cornyn.
Mr. Kyl is the key senator in the “grand bargain” underlying the immigration bill, and he could be overheard by spectators in the gallery marveling to other senators at the sacrifices he’s made to keep his compromise alive: “I voted against my best friend — an amendment we wrote together.”
On the health care vote, Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John McCain of Arizona both went to check with Mr. Kennedy before casting their votes to match his. Soon after, Mr. Kyl also switched his vote to match Mr. Kennedy’s.
It’s good to see Texas Senator John Cornyn working his tail off trying to put at least some conservative ideas into the bill. He tried but failed to prevent convicted criminals from receiving amnesty, including sex offenders and drunk drivers: Teddy outmaneuvered him on that one (remember, he’s pretty experienced on the drunk driving issue).
The Senate did pass another amendment sponsored by Mr. Kennedy that tightened rules on excluding gang members and terrorist supporters, but Mr. Cornyn said it would still allow sex offenders and repeat drunken drivers to remain in the country and get legal status.
But Sen. Cornyn did manage to get Teddy on one amendment, much to his red-faced chagrin.
After losing his absconders vote, Mr. Cornyn outmaneuvered Mr. Kennedy on another issue, getting the Senate to pass an amendment waiving confidentiality for illegal aliens who apply for but are denied legalization. With Mr. Cornyn’s amendment, which passed 57-39, the Department of Homeland Security could now use that information to track down rejected aliens and deport them.
Mr. Kennedy strenuously opposed the amendment, his face turning red as he thundered against it on the Senate floor.
This battle is not over until Teddy’s royal girth sings. Keep calling and faxing.

Cornyn needs to keep on pushing and the American public needs to keep pushing for this immigration “thing” to be defeated.
Fat chance but wishful thinking
Ted Kennedy is a national/global disgrace. I can’t figure out what the Massachusetts folks could possibly be thinking in re-electing this piece of Congressional garbage. Pretty damn sad reflection. Government at every level is to blame for this fiasco, and its roots were established a long time ago. Local governments saw this problem long ago, but sold out the citizen/taxpayers for the chance to grow their budgets. They saw the first glimpses in the public healthcare and the public school systems. No one raised a voice of concern - this will grow government and taxpayers will unknowingly foot the bill until it’s too late. Now the problem is so big that the gig is up with taxpayers. But it’s kind of like owing the bank $1,000 - the bank owns you. Owe the bank $1,000,000,000 and you own the bank. I really blame local governments more so than the federal government. Local officials have made the choice to grow their budgets by providing services at taxpayer expense through sanctuary programs, public education and social services(HCHD is one example). The taxpayer was not consulted and the last to figure out what happened. Mayor White’s choice to welcome 100,000 Katrina refugees at taxpayer expense is another example. No one is worried about financing these deals, they are all opportunities to grow government budgets and power bases.
Wow. Is Lindsey Graham in the tank, or what?
I was looking at google news and it listed LST with this link in regards to this *blank* immigration bill. Thought I would let you all know.
^5’s
Are they sure his face turned red from exertion or was it from drinking?
This just makes no sense. For a Rep, it’s political suicide. For the USA, it’s a poison pill. There’s not enough money in DC to turn the mind of many of these ego maniacs. Therefore, it must be something else - maybe it’s pictures with Uncle Teddy playing romper room of something, but nothing makes any sense on this one. Will we ever figure out the real deal?
Rastus, try “death wish.” Another choice is “greed.”
We’ve heard so much stuff for so long about “cultural imperialism” and being “judgmental” that we have lost our bearings. That’s not hard if one’s beliefs are rooted in people instead of God.
Anyone who believes in any absolute — other than “tolerance” — is disdained. Anyone attempting to follow God is ridiculed and that turns some away.
An absolute I believe: The U.S.A. has been very good for the world and individual rights. In our arrogance, the nation has strayed from God’s path and is headed for destruction.
I think there is time to turn, to repent, but it is getting shorter.
As a people, we have become greedy and focused on the now, rather than acknowledging we will exist somewhere for eternity. As a people, we are choosing something worse than death … eternal life in Hell.
Geez, Who’s side are they on? Somebody tell me why I am a Republican again?
Kay Bailey, ever caving to the Dhimmicratic left, just voted against the amendment to force the federal goverment to enforce the border security and immigration laws that are already on the books.
And she wants to be our next governor?
She needs to be fired, not put in the Mansion in Austin.
I’ve been emailing both Cornyn and Hutchinson regularly lately on immigration and I’ve been getting some decent responses from both. However, I still have the nagging feeling neither are really on the border control first, immigration reform later bandwagon. If they or any other conservatives were I think they would be talking about killing this garbage with filibusters. I just don’t like the taste of what I’m being fed. Keep the pressure on ‘em people.
We need to CLOSE THE BORDER FIRST or there will be utter chaos if they pass the immigration bill and try to implement the logistics. WHERE IS COMMON SENSE? It looks as though most Congress persons are starting to see it as an inefffective piece of legislation…slow learners they are.
Of course Cornyn’s amendment was voted down. We obviously need illegal aliens to commit the sexual offenses and felonies that American citizens just won’t commit. I thought everyone knew that.
Hey all, I have just finished writing the Dummies guide to immigration reform..
you 2cents on it would be appreciated

Here’s the link to the amendment and the vote tally for those who want to confront her about it:
Source: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00202
VOTE- Texas: Cornyn (R-TX), Yea; Hutchison (R-TX), Nay
Senator Hutchison’s email form: http://hutchison.senate.gov/contact.html
KBH favors criminal incursion into the US. I guess it’s OK as long as you go criminalizing every where else, but don’t go to her house. Pathetic and disgusting.
#14 Her Houston office (DC office line busy) says the usual blah blah blah about how this was not “good” enough although she supports much of it in “principal”.
Told her rep that she needs to hold press conferences on mainstream media (not depend on all citizens to have cable) to express her outrage at this bill, she needs to fillibuster (it only takes one senator to fillibuster)
I also email, but all I ever get in response is the boilerplate return emails - what you get depends on what subject you pick from the dropdown box. Cornyn doesn’t send any responses.
