In this time of the earliest Presidential campaigning ever, the attack machine is even getting a head start on non-candidates. Though Fred Dalton Thompson has yet to enter the presidential race, the blue print to attack him has already taken shape.
According to the much viewed The Politico website, there is a clear outline of how to hurt Thompson. Some arguments to expect:
– Lobbyist: Thompson made nearly $1.3 million over about two decades of lobbying both before and after his eight-year Senate stint . . ..
…
Some of Thompson’s clients could prove tricky to explain, from a British reinsurance company facing billions of dollars in asbestos claims to deposed Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
…
– Trial lawyer: Before Thompson won his Senate seat, published reports said his private law practice handled personal injury cases and defended people accused of white-collar crimes. And in the Senate, he opposed some legislation intended to rein in escalating jury verdicts and attorneys’ fees.
…
– Campaign finance reformer: Thompson was among the leading Republican backers of the sweeping package of campaign finance reforms commonly known as McCain-Feingold.
…
– Centrist senator: Though the influential American Conservative Union scored Thompson’s Senate career voting record at 86 percent, some of the votes on which he strayed from the GOP fold could prove problematic for ardent partisans. For instance, he backed a 1998 bill that would have established a temporary farm worker program and a 1996 bill to increase the minimum wage. And he voted against one of the two impeachment charges brought against President Clinton in 1999.
…
– Abortion-rights supporter: Every time Thompson got the chance in the Senate, he voted with those who oppose abortion rights. But the social conservatives for whom abortion is a litmus test scrutinize every bit of a politician’s record — and Thompson’s provides some fodder for opponents to question the depth of his opposition to abortion rights. On candidate surveys in 1994 and 1996, he answered that he favored abortion always being legal in the first trimester of pregnancy and opposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution “protecting the sanctity of human life.”
Undoubtedly, Thompson will have a carefully crafted response to each charge (he has already said McCain-Feingold did not work out as expected and has now advocated abolishing contribution limits entirely), and, undoubtedly, his opponents (GOP and Dem) will have many more bombs to lob in his direction.
The question is: Will conservatives be ultimately convinced that Thompson is not the “right” man after all?

As long as his testicles are bigger than Hillary’s, he will be ok.
The old closet door is opening.
Man that sucks.
From what I’ve read, he’s been for enforcing our border security since before it was fashionable…
He made 1.3 million over 20 years? umm How much did Hilary make in one day on cattle? Isnt that peanuts in the washington crowd? Daniel if they are perfect , they do not walk the earth.
Uhhh, nope! But then again, I don’t pay attention to the main scream media.
#4 AM: Spot on! Over TWO decades? Sheesh! Can’t he make that in 1, count ‘em, 1, movie? / back to the kitchen, you slacker….
Run, Fred, run!
I’m voting for him even if I have to write him in.
He’s the closest thing we’ve had to Reagan since Reagan.
Fred Thompson should have this as a campaign slogan:
I’m Fred Thompson and I’m the Devil, vote for me. Why choose the lesser of two evils?
So this guy doesn’t walk on water? Holy crap!
If it is Thompson or it is Mr. X unless we start holding our elected officials responsible we will continue to get screwed over and over again. It has to start in your neighborhood, one district at a time. All politics are local. With Dan, Edd, KSEV, LoneStarTimes.com and other sources we can beat the lobby groups, clean up the mess and turn this sinking ship around.
If you want to help go to http://www.thebiglobby.com and get involved. The politicians believe you are too lazy and dumb to do anything. Are they right?
I am worn out tired of having to decide between the lesser of two evils, I am tired of hearing Republician officials tell me I better support them because the other guy is worse. It felt great to vote for someone like Dan because I believed in him. I refuse to vote for anyone unless I feel the same way about them. Tired of the BS? Then stop whining and do something. You have the power, you are THE BIG LOBBY.
Somehow I think Fred is ready with rebuttals to these and any other points the lefties raise. By their planned assault strategy they clearly announce that he worries them greatly, which should be of good cheer to his supporters. Announce your candidacy soon, Fred. Let the contest begin.
az i emailed those organizations on that site.
I have said this before. John Glenn wiped the floor with Fred during impeachment. Fred was a total embarisment. Move on.
We need to look at the governor of Mississippi. He is compotent southern governor who did a great job post Katrina. It would be great to put the question to the electorate: Do you want a U.S. that looks like Lousianna under Democrats or a successfully rebuilt Mississippi under Haley Barbour?
Would not be a hard choice.
There is something in everyones closit. From the looks of it Freads’ just needs to be dusted .
RUN FREAD RUN !!!
From My Perspective:
How can any battered, abused, neglected, and spurned Conservative Republican Voter possibly look at the photos of Fred Thompson with his new and improved Mrs. Thompson, with any reasonable expectation that a President Thompson will remain faithful to Conservative’s best interest after the election honeymoon cycle is over?
GET REAL!!!!!
Haven’t we been thar and done dat, folks???
In my crystal ball, I see the final election in 2008 between a conservative, hopefully Fred Thompson running against a socialist Hillary Rodham Clinton. If you favor a socialist, Congressional backbiting like you have never seen, a health system run wild, higher taxes and an ostrich approach to terrorism, devoid of the will to recognize the problem, let alone defend our republic, then please vote for Mrs. Clinton. Otherwise, vote for Fred Thompson or other Republican candidate receiving the nomination for President. Joe Lieberman, Condi Rice, almost anyone with some cerebral matter between their ears would be fine. And NO, not many people are satisfied with the conduct of the war, its result, the decision on stem cell research, the way the Democratically-controlled Congress if working, nor the social engineering and legislative agenda of the more liberal Supreme Court judges. But yes, there ARE alternatives to the Clintons.
