Tell the truth
by David Benzion · 06/19/2007 9:46 amWe’re going to try an experiment today–a cutting-edge journey into the exciting new world of blog-based focus groups.
Here’s what you need to do.
First, go get a piece of paper and a pen/pencil. Come back once you’ve done that.
Seriously, you need to go get a piece of paper and a writing instrument, or this isn’t going to work.
OK, you’re back.
Now I’m going to list a series of words and phrases. As I go down this list, I want you to write down anything that pops into your mind–a place, a name, an idea, an emotion–anything at all.
Ready? Here we go.
- Fight for appraisal caps and tax cuts
- Experience, integrity and leadership
- An independent watchdog
- Reducing illegal immigration
Once you’ve scribbled down your list, go ahead and click on the “more” link below.
DON’T CLICK ON THE “MORE” LINK UNTIL YOU’VE MADE YOUR LIST.
The whole thing will be ruined if you don’t make your list first.
OK, take a look at your list again.
I’m willing to bet that not a single one of you wrote down the name “Orlando Sanchez“.
That’s OK– no one expected you to.
It is the one topic with the proven ability to unite libertarian-leaning wing-nuts, progressive left-leaning moon-bats (i.e., liberal enough to describe the “politics” of the Boy Scouts as “abhorrent”;), and egg-headed (but beer-drinking!) conservative political science professors at St. Thomas University.
Is anyone at this point prepared to argue that the taxpayers of Harris County are getting their $96,000 per year’s worth?
Comments are open.
Hat-tip to Charles Kuffner and Professors R-Squared for posts reminding me I’ve been meaning to get around to this subject.

Orlando must be the only hispanic in Tejas that can’t win an election.
The only time I’ve voted for a Democrat in the last 30 years was for Sanchez’s opponent in ‘06, Richard Garcia. He ran on eliminating the office altogether. How could any self-respecting conservative NOT have voted for Garcia?
But I have to admit, that whole Ventriloquist’s Dummy look that Sanchez has going on helped a little too.
My list:
1. Dan Patrick, futile

41 states have laws to protect citizens from governmental abuse and private property seizure (eminent domain proceedings) stemming from the Kelo decision. Texas legislators also overwhelmingly passed such legislation, but our Republican governor decided to veto it in the wee hours of the morning under cover of darkness. It’s probably his most outrageous official act so far, but where’s the outrage? Instead you are dinking around with word games and rock stars. Has Pat Gray taken over this blog?
My list is full of expletives.. I’d better not publish it as this is a family friendly site.
My list:

I am certainly outraged by the governor’s veto and have posted comments on various blogs expressing so! I wrote letters, made phone calls, sent emails and did all I could to make my voice heard. But when Perry blatantly ignores a a group as powerful and influential as the Texas Cattle Raisers Association, who were adamantally in support H.B. 2006, you know that our sleazy governor doesn’t care a fiddler’s #&^% about what the people of Texas want. Perry is the worst of the worst, IMO.
BTW, Here’s the email I got from TCRA the evening of the veto (and I quote, but I don’t know how to highlight it in a separate block!)

Cattle Raisers shocked by governor’s veto of eminent domain bill
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association was shocked by the news that Gov. Perry has vetoed the most important property rights legislation Texas has seen in decades.
“Gov. Perry has sent the message loud and clear that he does not support private property rights,” said Jon Means, TSCRA president. “H.B. 2006 would have restored fairness to the condemnation process and ensured that property owners are justly compensated for their loss.”
Reportedly, the veto resulted from an amendment added to the bill by Sen. Glenn Hegar (R-Katy) that would have required the special commissioners in a condemnation case to consider loss of access when determining compensation for the landowner.
This amendment applied only to state highway projects; it would not have affected county or city road projects. The Texas Department of Transportation argued that the amendment would result in up to $1 billion in additional costs, but offered no data to support this claim.
“Prior to the 1993 decision by the Texas Supreme Court in Schmidt v. State, landowners were compensated for diminished access,” said Ed Small, legal counsel for TSCRA. “The state treasury didn’t go bankrupt prior to 1993 because of this and it wouldn’t go bankrupt if this bill were to become law.”
“We applaud Sen. Hegar for his valiant effort on behalf of landowners across Texas,” said Jon Means. “We are, however, extremely disappointed that in this state it is apparently acceptable for the government to take people’s property without paying them for their damage.”
Big Jolly blogged about the eminent domain issue… last Friday, fwiw
If no one has hit it on he front page since then, well… to tell you the truth, I suspect no one around here had particularly high expectations for Gov. 39% anyways.
We endorsed Kinky Friedman, you may recall.
Which sort of fits in with the larger point of this thread (i.e., pointing out how right and brilliant we were last November); to wit–
Does anyone honestly think we’d be worse off if Kinky Friedman had been our Governor for the past half year, rather than Perry?
If so, I’d love to hear the case made.
I really think Kinky, at worst, would have done no more damage than Perry, but I really think he would have taken the job seriously. He wouldn’t be beholden to and have to kiss the ring of big special interests like Perry and others did, have and would.
He’s socially not on the same page as me, but he appeared to be up front and honest and that was like a breath of fresh air in a Port-O Potty in August….
