I saw a clip of Coulter’s comment. What she said was directly opposite of the quote from the San Faggsisco ChronicLies article. She said that Bill Maher made the comment (quoting him on Chaney), then repeated the comment about Edwards.
Fair enough. She was misquoted. That doesn’t change my opinion of her that she’s an attention seeking twit who likes to use shock value to make her points, just like Bill Maher. That I generally agree with her politically doesn’t change my opinion of her personally one iota.
“Just two days ago, 64 senators voted to revive the bill, with many saying they wanted to give the Senate a chance to improve the bill through amendments. But after a messy day in the chamber yesterday, with dozens of objections, arguments on the floor and five amendments defeated, at least a half-dozen senators said publicly or privately that their patience has run out.”
My enjoyment of today hinges on what happens with the cloture vote. No thank you sir, I would not care for another. Kill this ridiculously overreaching bill for good and lets talk enforcement.
It’s dead. The Democrats solution will be to continue to ignore the problem and blame it on Republicans. The Republicans could make political hay out of this by pushing a “demonstrable border security first, then let’s talk” strategy. Let’s see if they learned any lessons.

Tancredo sends head of lettuce to Chertoff
WASHINGTON (CNN) — It’s not every day a presidential hopeful sends Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff a head of lettuce, but that’s what Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colorado, is doing Wednesday to show his disagreement with Chertoff’s recent comments on how failure of passing immigration reform might affect the agricultural industry.
Tancredo says he disagrees with recent comments Chertoff made that suggested if the immigration bill fails, the agricultural industry will suffer. To prove his point he is sending Chertoff a head of lettuce, a fruit basket, and a card saying, “much, much more where this comes from.”

Migrant perishes in canal, Border Patrol agent injured
By Louie Gilot / El Paso Times
A Border Patrol agent trying to rescue a drowning migrant was wounded by the migrant’s smuggler and shot back at his attacker this afternoon by the American Canal west of Fonseca Drive, Border Patrol officials said.
Officials said the suspected smuggler, who was on the U.S. side of the canal started hurling rocks, hitting the agent on the back of the head, cutting a three-inch-long gash. The agent was later taken to the hospital and his condition is not known.
After being hit, the agent shot at the smuggler and missed and the smuggler ran back to Mexico, possibly with another migrant, officials said.
Officials have located the drowned migrant and were pulling his body out of the water this afternoon.

I think, however, we have to move beyond the uni-dimensional view of a “good” God as one who is primarily out to provide for us a pain-free existence. Yes, God is good, and He is out for our good. But “good” does not mean “painlessness.”

U.S. builds border barrier on wrong side
Vehicle barrier erected in Mexico to be removed
Part of a vehicle barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border was erected in the wrong country and soon will be removed and rebuilt on American soil, federal officials say.
“We respect our international boundary, and we want to be good neighbors,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Friel told The Associated Press on Monday. “…We want to move quickly to ensure that we place the vehicle barrier where it should be, which is north of the border.”
The barrier, 17 miles west of Columbus, N.M. was built in 2000 by Joint Task Force North out of Fort Bliss, Texas. It encroaches into Mexico territory between one and six feet south of the border along a 1.5-mile stretch.
I agree there’s a double standard that favors liberals in traditional media. Fortunately we can see that for what it is with blogs and other internet based sources of information.
What if women in Mexico stopped having babies and then the supply of unemployed young men diminished to the point that Mexican wages began to signifigantly rise ? Well, it’s beginning to happen…
#44 And we are allowed to go, or are put, through firely trials so that the dross of our fallen nature may be burned. That we may be as refined gold, to be conformed to the example of Christ and not conformed to this world.
#22 - Welllllllllllllllll sumtahms dat gift be a new Escalade - and sumtahms it be an old rusted out AMC Pacer that falls off the jack on the side of the road on to your chest - but with our FAITH - they both be gifts……..(not to mention the gift of free will we’re given that allows us to choose how to handle either one)
Just curious, what if we had a hurricane or devastating tornado today?
Would you be saying “enjoy this glorious day that God has given us”?
Or would you say something like “enjoy this day of death and destruction that God has given us”?
Wow. You are certainly in a black mood today.
Such things as natural disasters came about with Adam’s fall. Besides, ask Job about how to respond to disaster which is not of your doing and not your fault in any way:
Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him…
Or maybe what happened when God did allow Satan to take Job’s flocks and family?
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
may the name of the LORD be praised.”
In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
#53 - it was just the first old clunker that came to mind………..actually rode in one from OK city to L.A. manymanymany coon’s ages ago - wasn’t a bad ride atall (particularly since I wuz hitchhikin)
And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, “O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats.
Armaments 2: 23-25
And the Lord spake, saying, “First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
The reality of it is God is good and wants goodness for all of us, but sometimes He allows a situation not for our good to happen so we can learn from it, hence the atonement.
One hour ago, the Supreme Court Of The United States concluded the current term by issuing two rulings which will become landmark precedent in school and public integration policy in America. Every school superintendent and district legal counsel in the US will be reading these rulings over the next few days.
From The SCOTUSblog:
” Concluding its current Term with a historic ruling on race in public policy, the Supreme Court divided 5-4 on Thursday in striking down voluntary integration plans in the public schools of Seattle and Louisville. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., wrote the majority opinion in the combined cases. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy did not join all of the majority opinion, but joined in the result.
‘The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race,’ Roberts wrote. On the two school plans, the majority found that the districts have ‘failed to provide the necessary support for the proposition that there is no other way than individual racial classifications to avoid racial isolation in their school districts.’ ”
Guys and gals, dudes and dude-ettes, ladies and gents, hobos and tramps, cross-eyed mosquitos and bow-legged ants: Sorry I set Shakemeister off in my post #5. I was only referring to my gratitude to God for allowing me to share this day. They are all glorious when you get my age, no matter what the weather. /BTW Shakey: I wasn’t referring to the weather when callin it a glorious day.
Don Surber recounts the SCOTUS telling Feingold to take a flying leap this past Monday:
” DEMOCRATIC Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin got his long overdue comeuppance in the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. The court ruled the senator is not above criticism before an election, no matter what law Feingold may author.
And three justices even reminded him that Wisconsin is not Morocco. ”
Everybody who said it was a done deal, the fix was in, citizens no longer have a voice, blah, blah, blah should hang their heads in shame and beg forgiveness from those who still believe in the American democracy.
It has been a banner week for the conservative movement. SCOTUS bitch-slapped Russ Feingold on free speech on Monday and today they told the diversity pimps, multiccutural whores and racecard sharks to slither back under the rock from whence they came. The Senate buckled under ferocious grass-roots pressure and admitted, finally, the King wears no clothes. I’m going out to celebrate -later…..
#77 texpat - “Everybody who said it was a done deal…” Not me. When I said earlier in the week that it wasn’t over and there were several other opportunities I was roundly made fun of for living in fantasy land. Optimism prevails!
#78 - Dude, but what if an earthquake in the gulf caused a tsunami to wipe out Houston, or a plague of locusts devoured all our corn crop and the price of ethanol jumped up to $20/gallon? Would it still be a great day???? Huh???? Answer the question! You can’t because as usual you miss the double standard point!
So much for US justice: juries get the verdict wrong in one out of six criminal cases and judges don’t do much better, a new study has found.
And when they make those mistakes, both judges and juries are far more likely to send an innocent person to jail than to let a guilty person go free, according to an upcoming study out of Northwestern University.
Tornados and hurricanes suck. No… they blow. Whatever. My flabber is all gasted, so don’t tax my gig crusters.
If Ann Coulter and Bill Maher produced offspring I’d “yeeeaaaaarrrrgggg” like Howard Dean. Or maybe I’d yack like a blogger who’d over-imbibed. I just don’t know.
You’re gonna get Hammie started talking about strip clubs and nativity scenes if you don’t watch it. BTW, that Devil’s Smegma description of mayo really is funny. I mentioned that to Mrs. Dude. She just shook her head.
If Ann Coulter and Bill Maher procreated, you would get a very ugly, skinny kid with blond hair and a big nose that would eventually commit suicide because of its issues with dealing with a multiple personality disorder. There is no way those two personalities can reconcile themselves in one body.
In reading the article, I find I already have serious questions about the methodology of the study. I am very skeptical of studies emanating from academia on our criminal justice system and especially from a place as liberal as Northwestern. The study used as a determinant the cases in which juries and judges disagreed. No thanks, I will wait until the study is posted and see for myself.
“Houston ISD’s administration building from July 1970 to March 2006 was the Hattie Mae White Administration Building (located at 3830 Richmond Avenue), and was labelled the “Taj Mahal” due to the confusing layout of the complex.“
I’ve been studying the source, but these are questions I still have. The exercise is to try and understand how one can have “blind faith” for lack of a better term. That’s all.
But what is is that we need to be asking God for? I admit, I really don’t ask Him for anything other than to instill in me the ability to believe the way I should, and to help others (such as someone who is ill or suffering). I ask Him often to fix this crazy world. I don’t ask for money or anything material, or anything that could be construed as a “selfish” request.
Maybe that’s part of the problem. Maybe I need to be asking for things by which I can measure the results easier. I just don’t know.
I have been there too. You know what? There is nothing wrong with that prayer. Nothing at all.
What I ask for is peace in the midst of the storms. The peace will come. Always has to me. I understand that stuff happens. I do not know why. I am just a human. But what I do know because I have seen and expirienced it, all things work towards the good that God would have in yours mine and our lives.
So why do people give God props for just the good things about nature? Seems to be a Double Standards situation, don’t you think?
I give God props for all of creation, the good and the “bad”. I suspect that EmmeKelley feels the same way. Without the forces behind hurricanes and tornadoes, you wouldn’t have the spring showers. Without plate tectonics that cause earthquakes, we wouldn’t have mountains. Without the evil, we would never be able to know (or choose) the good. It is simply a necessary part of growing up, as it were.
Every day is a gift, even if that day is the hardest day of my life. I guaran-damn-tee you that I appreciate my kids now more than ever. You know what I mean. I’ve also seen some signifcant growth on their part over the last few months, largely from the very thing you would bemoan.
Nobody gets outta here alive, we all know that. The secret is in what you do with the time you’ve got.
So I will thank God for every day, and if I lose a loved one or even my own life, I will thank Him for the time I had, and for the eternity I look forward to with him.
Shakey, you aren’t the only one who has asked these questions. Not by a long shot. Read these lyrics. Listen to the song. Bet you can find a video of it on Youtube.
I don’t understand why people think life is supposed to be easy and it is unfair or God’s fault if it is not. This is Life Scool 101 and it is supposed to be difficult. If life were always easy - we wouldn’t grow, learn or appreciate the good times.
Also, think about all the things or situations in your life you prayed for and now are so happy they didn’t come to pass because it would have changed the course of your life in a dramatically negative way. You wouldn’t have the blessings you have today.
Truly wise people thank God for the hardships too and help in dealing with them.
#117 Squawkster, I thought so too and we would be embroiled in another long, expensive, unenforceable, bureaucratic fiasco. Saw him earlier blame the senate and congress on its’ failure, as if the AMERICAN PEOPLE had nothing to do with it. He just doesn’t “get it”.
#77 texpat I am hanging my head while spinning and dancing with joy. I am so glad I was wrong. After the cloture vote, I was sure the fix was in, the house would get this bill and voila. I am so glad to be wrong!
Never has. He is no better than the libdems in trying to be all things to everyone. Just shows to go ya that if ya live in the middle of the road yur gonna getz runned ober.
Headshaker as we post to you, and sqwauk does it so well, I’d like to make a suggestion. You have questions and doubts. Go to a good Christian book store, and pick out a bible you can read, that is easy print and is understandable. If you want, ask God to help you pick it out before you do it. Then every day, pick a quiet time, give thanks, ask for help in understanding what you are about to read, and read two chapters. Start at the beginning. You will not have a total flash of enlightenment, nor will you be sucked into mind numbed belief. But as you do this daily, things will improve for you. All God wants is a relationshop with us. All we have to do is ask. I do this every morning first thing. I will swear to you it works. I cannot quote scripture, not do i attend church every Sunday, but this time is important, and my life is good.
I know that’s right. I even tell my 6 year old daughter that if she has to say “ummm” it means she hasn’t considered what she wants to say thoroughly enough before saying it. Her speech has shown marked improvement since I pointed that out to her.
Here is a very interesting article on the dynamics of the conservative wing of SCOTUS. Linda Greenhouse is a solidly leftwing liberal who tries hard to make small intellectual molehills into divisive mountains, but even the experts she quotes refute her attempt. Scalia has been goading Roberts to not be so timid. It is short and good.
I’ve always been amazed at the weird speech patterns of George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush. I read years ago that the senior Bush’s mother would never let her children use the word “I” since speaking in the first person meant you were trying to draw undue attention to yourself. That was how we got a president who would say things like, ” Nope, wouldn’t be prudent.” The man could never say: “I do not think that is right.” I don’t think the man ever uttered the word “I” and it makes for very awkward, tentative speech that betrays a lack of conviction.
Dude, atleast your kids have not through the calling of everyone “Dude” yet. For a while there, Josh called everyone Dude - including me. Guess it could have been worse, but it was annoying and took threats of bodily harm to break him of it.
Liz, there was another interesting section of that article on the senior Bush’s parents and his childhood in uppercrust Connecticut. Even though they lived in a mansion in a very privileged area, Prescott Bush thought their neighbors were pretentious snobs. He used to regularly mock and mimic the silly behavior of their rich neigbors to much laughter from his children. He would bring in things like a ping-pong table to the marble entry foyer and have the children playing there much to the horror of arriving guests or pour food coloring into the elaborate marble fountain just to see the reaction. Prescott and his wife enjoyed their money, but were clearly not impressed with themselves because they had it and did not want their children to be.
And they are all filled with Illegal Immigrants, Shamnesty, and a broken political system. Phone Phone, Phone. Our 20 extra years belong to us, not illegals

My point is you can’t have it both ways. You can’t thank God for a glorious day, and when it’s not a glorious day not blame Him for that also.
I’m not talking about free will, I’m talking about nature.
Why can’t people just be honest? Did God just create the glorious, beautiful and wonderful days? Did Satan create the others?

#44 And we are allowed to go, or are put, through firely trials so that the dross of our fallen nature may be burned. That we may be as refined gold, to be conformed to the example of Christ and not conformed to this world.
My favorite Bible passage:
Proverbs 21:9
Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
Dear Headshaker
Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

I’ve been busy editing Katfish’s post, so please forgive my typo above.

I dunno. Can you tell me how to have a good, without having a bad to compare it to? Where is up, if there is no down?
What you’re postulating is a colorless, unejoyable world, because we wouldn’t have something else to compare it to.
I think I’m going to enjoy the day, and drink margaritas if there’s a hurricane.

Wow. You are certainly in a black mood today.
Such things as natural disasters came about with Adam’s fall. Besides, ask Job about how to respond to disaster which is not of your doing and not your fault in any way:
Or maybe what happened when God did allow Satan to take Job’s flocks and family?

Interesting how there is zero population growth in Mexico, yet the Hispanic fertility rate is the highest in the US.
Can’t imagine why.
AMC Pacers do look like a VW Bug that died and bloated up… but you can take what some think is a piece of crap and make something out of it!

Armaments 2: 9-21
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
listening to alan specter on this bill debate makes me wonder if he is a dumbo-crat. you’all remember dumbo dont ya?
Thank God and Hallelujah !

Oh, it wasn’t you! This has been building up for awhile, say 42 years or so!

That’s about as cryptic as you can get, dj25k.
53-46 vote count ! Everybody pat yourself on the back !
Everybody who said it was a done deal, the fix was in, citizens no longer have a voice, blah, blah, blah should hang their heads in shame and beg forgiveness from those who still believe in the American democracy.
Between the rejection of the amnesty bill and the SCOTUS ruling texpat mentioned in #68, this is a great day. Well done, America.
Here is an interesting video clip.

What is so great about tornados and hurricanes?
#77 texpat - “Everybody who said it was a done deal…” Not me. When I said earlier in the week that it wasn’t over and there were several other opportunities I was roundly made fun of for living in fantasy land. Optimism prevails!
#78 - Dude, but what if an earthquake in the gulf caused a tsunami to wipe out Houston, or a plague of locusts devoured all our corn crop and the price of ethanol jumped up to $20/gallon? Would it still be a great day???? Huh???? Answer the question! You can’t because as usual you miss the double standard point!
Well, at least I don’t hear anyone saying “God gave us these wonderful outcomes” today.
And what if Ann Coulter and Bill Maher produced offspring?
God gave us these wonderful outcomes today.
OK, tell me this isn’t crazy:
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=070628135531.31cukrus&show_article=1
#85 LMAO you’re such a little pot-stirrererer
Tornados and hurricanes suck. No… they blow. Whatever. My flabber is all gasted, so don’t tax my gig crusters.
If Ann Coulter and Bill Maher produced offspring I’d “yeeeaaaaarrrrgggg” like Howard Dean. Or maybe I’d yack like a blogger who’d over-imbibed. I just don’t know.
I told you to be careful of White Russians. They get you every time…
Jim,
You’re gonna get Hammie started talking about strip clubs and nativity scenes if you don’t watch it. BTW, that Devil’s Smegma description of mayo really is funny. I mentioned that to Mrs. Dude. She just shook her head.
Devil’s Smegma and french fries yum, not to mention on a BLT is a double yum.
#84 - hmmmmmmmmmmm……..that would likely be a very ANGRY / slightly funny infant that still needs an enema STAT™
*hat tip Sha Na Na*

#85 Hamous
Agreed.
#86 & #94 - And just when did we begin to lend credence to ANY surveys from the land of corpses that VOTE?
Well, it looks like the Houston Chronicle writers have been spending a little time on Wikipedia.
I was looking for some information about HISD’s once infamous “Taj Mahal” and ran across this Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Independent_School_District
in which we find this “Taj Mahal” reference:
“Houston ISD’s administration building from July 1970 to March 2006 was the Hattie Mae White Administration Building (located at 3830 Richmond Avenue), and was labelled the “Taj Mahal” due to the confusing layout of the complex.“
OK so where do the not-so-wonderful outcomes come from? No one has tackled that question yet.
#83, #85 and #95
Yep!
BTW hunnerdth!
Evil cannot be ascribed to God. Nature (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) is not evil. It just is.
Rain doesn’t fall for the flowers. It just falls.
#101 jimb
Exactly. So why do people give God props for just the good things about nature? Seems to be a Double Standards situation, don’t you think?
I still find it interesting that some poeple will argue with believers, say they are searching and remain unwilling to study the source of our belief.
OH! but that would not be anyone here, now would it?
#102 Hamless
Not if you believe in intelligent design.
#104 Squawk
I’ve been studying the source, but these are questions I still have. The exercise is to try and understand how one can have “blind faith” for lack of a better term. That’s all.
Where does faith come from?
Have you “tried it” for yourself? Each and everyone here has a “reason” for what brought them to faith.
My faith is in the author of my faith and what he says he will and has done. Not faith in faith. Those answers are found in the book.
Until I made a decision trusting God would do what he said he would do all my gum flapping with other believers was just that, gum flapping.
now THESE folks know how to give a bonus!!

Is there a rule that says you have to ask God for something?
Shakey
God bless ya man.
#115 lol - you know it’s bad when you mis-spell “school”.
OH and in the case of full disclosure…. I thought sure this amnasty bill would go through.
OOPS my bad.
Hmmm I was right on one thing. BUSHco just proved again he ain’t no leader.

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH
Pat Gray just called Bushy a conservative.
Bush a conservative???? Muhwahahahahaha and I am high paid male stripper at Chippendales.

Oh God Forbid ! Katfish has started a spelling school and Squawk is his first student.
And I want a president that can string 5 words together without a 4 second “uhhh” pause somewhere in the middle.
#126,
I know that’s right. I even tell my 6 year old daughter that if she has to say “ummm” it means she hasn’t considered what she wants to say thoroughly enough before saying it. Her speech has shown marked improvement since I pointed that out to her.
#121
OK; thanks to you and everyone else here for your kindness and advice.
It is short and good.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/28/washington/28memo.html?_r=1&n=Top%2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fOrganizations%2fS%2fSupreme%20Court%20&oref=slogin
#130 Never knew that. Now that’s interesting…
#131 “gone through” I should just give up until fall and brain cells regenerate…
