Out-of-town Brown can’t hold a candle to Hurtt!

  2. SimpleSimon on July 9th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    Matt,

I have mixed feelings about Hurtt and there are indeed good reasons why he should be a full time resident, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how he could have stopped those homicides, unless he is sporting a red “S” on his long-johns.

Even the ghost of Herman Short could have done little to prevent the killings. Short was as tough a cookie as there ever was in HPD, yet during his reign, Houston was second to very few in the numbers of killings.

    Simple

Simple, my point is that the mayor and police chief don’t appear to take policing seriously.

You’re right, if Hurtt was in town, those murders probably still would have happened.

But, if we had a dedicated, intelligent police chief who understood the value of patrol officers, and if we had a mayor who put public safety above revenue, those murders might have been prevented.

The point isn’t that the chief is gone on the weekends. The point is that we have a police chief who doesn’t appear to care about the job.

    #3 - How?

    How what?

  6. RickG on July 9th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

    We have a police chief?

“if we had a dedicated, intelligent police chief who understood the value of patrol officers, and if we had a mayor who put public safety above revenue, those murders might have been prevented.”

    Again - how?
Are his policies not in effect when he is personally not on duty?

A mayor who understands being a sanctuary city also means we are a sanctuary for illegal criminals would start. A police chief and mayor who were dedicated to gang relief would help. (MS13) A mayor who understood a city with low crime is a draw for new residents would be a plus.

Observer, that’s my point. The Chief’s policies are those of a man who neither knows nor cares what he’s doing.

For nearly a year, he wore a suit and tie to work, rather than the Chief’s uniform. That’s because he wasn’t certified as a police officer. Yes, the Chief of Police didn’t have the legal authority to write a ticket.

Once he finally became a qualified cop, he proposed spending $700,000 on new gold badges. Meanwhile, the department’s manpower shortage was deepening.

Last year, he proposed spending $1.5 million to install cameras on HPD’s Tasers.

Overall, Hurtt’s tenure has seen the force shrink. Let’s take a look at the number of murders for the past few years:

    2003: 278
    2004: 272
    2005: 334
    2006: 377

Hurtt has been focused on revenue-generation schemes, like red-light cameras, while ignoring the most fundamendal item of policing: drive around and make sure people don’t kill each other.

I don’t remember Houston being so deadly since the early 80’s.

The Guys the Chief of Police - He’s hired and paid to prevent crime and protect the citizens

Thats the yardstick - if crime goes up - its his buttiniski - if crime goes down he absolutely gets the credit

The Mayor and Chief are too busy trying to keep businessmen from getting laid at the strip clubs.

  15. Jean on July 9th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

I question the Mayor & the Chief’s concern about the city in general! NOt just crime. I think they are living in a land with lolli-pops dancing through their minds, and the only thing they see is the next higher office!

The crappy ordinances and the lack of support main stream folks are given in the city is enough to show you they are catering to a lobby that will get them their next gold star!

  16. Neocon on July 9th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Crime will increase in this city to the point where it cannot be ignored. Hopefully, Yoda will seek higher office and Hurtt will fall by the wayside. Hurtt is appointed by Yoda and Yoda only cares about revenue — not crime or policing. Sad that, but it has to come to a head sometime as the crime rate increases year after year. Unfortunately, the citizens are the ones who suffer and will continue to do so.

Any idea who pays for his plane tickets? Is it out of pocket or does the city pay?
