When it comes to baseball players, I be hatin’. If j.bagwell could have survived on $25,000 per game, rather than the $117,285.93 he made PER GAME the last two years, maybe working people could afford to take their kids to the games now and then.
If a.rodriguez could survive on a mere $50,000 per game, rather than the $172,455.18 he makes PER GAME now, they wouldn’t have to tear down Yankee Stadium* and build another for more revenue.
Free enterprise? Uh, no. Baseball has anti-trust exemption - they have a monopoly against the potential for competition from new leagues.
Baseball players? Who needs ‘em.

West-by-Gawd-Byrdia
The old coot can’t even speak fer gawdsakes - put his lame butt out to pasture - a total embarassment (and sidebar - Gee I thought we weren’t suppose to refer to G0d in the goverment?)
#3, that player and his rejection of the contract is as much the player as it is his agent. Scott Boras is the biggest a-hole of all the sports agents around, he is know for having no morals (which sounds like most lawyers). He is also the one that is responsible for the A-rod contract and several of the other outrageous contracts out there.
Not htat the owners are free of blame, they are the ones that are paying these salaries.
My question all along about this bridge deal relates to any sources of stray current similar to that being emitted by the toy train. As a former boat owner, I can tell you what stray DC current can do to an engine that does not have proper zincs attached - and it doesn’t take long for that current to eat it up. I’ve paid some attention to the ongoing debate surrounding Metro’s efforts to lie about the amount of stray current along its lines and the effect it would have on the steel in building and bridge foundations, etc. The whole point of this post is that I read somewhere that Minneapolis has it own toy train serving the downtown area - now I know nothing about the set-up, the route, etc. but it really did raise the hair on the back of my neck. Electrolosis is the only thing I could think of that could erode steel very quickly - even between inspections periods lead to a failure of this magnitude. Just asking if there are any experts out there with ideas on this subject.
#33 AZ - Of the other tenants of the Metrodome, the Gophers are getting a new football stadium and the Vikings are trying to. That will probably be a hard sell now.
Last time I called someone to tellem ‘I’d be right over’ - was Shannon as I recall and I wound up calling fer BAIL to get out of Jail in Hempstead!(not trying to minimize this current tragedy one bit)
Dhimmicrats begin to lose vote giving $$$ and bennies to illegals so they call the vote and erase the results and Repubs walk out.
“Republicans argued afterward that they had secured a 215-213 win on their motion to bar undocumented immigrants from receiving any federal funds apportioned in the agricultural spending bill for employment or rental assistance. Democrats, however, argued the measure was deadlocked at 214-214 and failed, members and aides on both sides of the aisle said afterward.”
THE SCARY PART:
“The House eventually recessed at 11:18 p.m. But Republicans quickly discovered that there was no longer any record of the controversial vote and immediately charged Democrats with ERASING THE BAD RESULT.”
My wife mentioned something this morning to me about the corrosive effect of years of salt (de-icing) application to the bridge. I don’t know where she heard that or if it’s even being considered as a factor in the investigation. Anyone who’s spent time up north will tell you how hard salt is on a car body/chassis, so to think it would corrode bolts and rebar on a bridge isn’t much of a stretch. Stray current as a primary cause seems pretty unlikely to me.
There is no record of a vote, therefore there was no vote. Therefore, the eeeeevil Republicans are just grandstanding for attention and leveling vile, partisan, and baseless attacks at the pure, clean, honest Democrats.

As you sat there last night watching C-Span you obviously witnesses the biggest mirage that has ever occurred. While you thought you watched a vote take place and the results announced, you were actually in the twilight zone and nothing actually happened. It was late at night and your eyes and ears just played a trick on you. We all know the Dems cheat on election day all across the nation, but I never thought I would see the day when they had the cajones to blatantly cheat in the House or Representatives on live TV in front of the entire nation. We are doomed. Just bring the troops home and let’s all sit around and collect our government checks until the final throat is cut - it’s not worth saving anyway. This representative democracy experiment is almost over after a 200 year run - wonder if it will ever be duplicated again.
I was thinking since bridges are made out of concrete & steel and buildings are made out of concrete and steel….and after 40 plus years they become so frail they just drop like a hot rock wtf are we gonna do?
Howd did the Romans and Greeks get those those structures to last so long?
Treasury, IRS Release Report on Improving Voluntary Compliance
Washington, D.C.–The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service(IRS) released today an IRS report addressing the agency’s implementation of the 2006 strategy to improve voluntary compliance with federal tax laws.
Unconstrained by the interference of another; unimpelled by the influence of another; not prompted or persuaded by another; done of his or its own accord; spontaneous; acting of one’s self, or of itself; free.
Compliance
The act of complying with a wish, request, or demand; acquiescence.
well I would not say 8 in a row, but if Hal would allow multiple links in posts it would be less. Yes there were multiples, but I like to provide options.
Your first comparison is way out in left field. Romans and Greeks didn’t build structures to bear weight (other than their own) like bridges, so you’re comparing apples and oranges.
The second comparison is worthy of consideration. What specifically is different about that design than the design of the bridge that collapsed? Or indeed, is design even the question?
It’s entirely possible that the design was sound but the maintenance wasn’t performed properly and/or frequently enough. I can tell you first hand that even the most soundly designed piece of equipment will eventually fail if it isn’t maintained properly. Seek facts before you assign blame please.
Sorry but I must decline your generous offer of a fine Mexican dinner for my UPCOMING birthday. I hate to be crass but frankly man you make a big of mess when you eat.

Granted, you asked the question rather than “assigned” blame. It’s perfectly legitimate to discuss faulty design as a possible cause, and that’s why I said what I said:
The second comparison is worthy of consideration. What specifically is different about that design than the design of the bridge that collapsed? Or indeed, is design even the question?
Here’s the problem though. When you discuss the soundness of a design without also discussing how well/frequently maintenance was performed, you’re talking out of your butt.
Although I don’t work specifically in civil engineering, I do have more than a passing familiarity with design and engineering as you well know. An inherent part of any project is routine maintenance procedures. Companies like the one where I work spend a significant amount of time, money and effort in developing and implementing routine maintenance procedures.
If guys like me spend our workdays designing safe and good equipment and then it gets improper maintenance then we’re all just wasting our time. The two go hand in hand. I take this subject very seriously (and personally) because:
1. peoples’ lives depend on it
2. it feeds my family
So I would ask that you seek information and facts before you speculate about whether or not an engineer or architect did his job properly.
What we need is a “8/1 Bridge Truth” organization. When I was in Minneapolis a few weeks ago I think I saw two Israelis taking photographs of that bridge. Originally I thought they were just tourists but now its all making sense… Congress should probably set up another Old Codgers Commission too. And a Special Prosecutor. And a dozen or so Senate panels. Barbaric! Barbaric! Let that word ring from mountain to mountain, valley to valley, hill to hill! ……… Barbaric! ……….Barbaric!
Reminds me of the “The Great Beer Spill” that happened when I was attending A&M. There are rail tracks that run near Wellborn Street, which at that time was on the western edge of the main campus. One night a rail car loaded with many, many, many cans of beer derailed.
Obama said in a speech Wednesday that as president he would order military action against terrorists in Pakistan’s tribal region bordering Afghanistan if intelligence warranted it. The comment provoked anger in Pakistan, a key ally of the United States in its war on terror.
So does that mean that Obama’s remarks are breeding terrorists in Pakistan that wouldn’t otherwise have been there? Hey, just following the Democrat train of thought with regard to our troops being in Iraq.
Why I’ll bet those Pakistanis are just seething. Maybe we’ll even get a new Islamic Rage Boy out of the deal. I was getting tired of the old one anyway.
Paul Mirengoff of Powerline recalls the record of basball’s greatest pitcher:
” Johnson would go on to win 416 games. He retired in 1927 with a career ERA of 2.17; 110 shut-outs (a record that still stands); and 3508 strikeouts (a record that stood for nearly 60 years). In 1912, he went 32-12 with an ERA of 1.39. The next year he was even better — 36-7 and 1.09. In 1924 at age 36, he went 24-7 and led Washington to its only championship, winning the seventh game of the World Series with four innings of shut-out relief. Johnson was one of the five first inductees into the Hall of Fame, along with Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, and Christy Mathewson. ”
Pretty good, except I’m looking for a job. Have a couple of interviews set up early next week. Kinda been enjoying the time off! Well done of the new nick name. I’m hooked on Lord of the Rings too!
#112 - Back in probably 1981 I remember a construction worker falling multiple stories somewhere around Greenspoint. When he landed, a piece of rebar was driven through his skull. He remained conscious while they sawed the rebar loose. They took him to the hospital to remove it and he survived with very little brain damage.
Russian dressing……#120 Hamous I remember that too. House member Dheal has a bill to ban anchor babies. IT requires the baby to be from citizens, have permanent legal resident status or be in the military……Sounds like a winner to me.
Chuckie (Deputy Dawg) is 4 ft tall so he must have kicked a 6 year old…
Sorry, never liked Chuck Norris or Charles Bronson either… I know they are/were good men in real life and helped people whenever they could but the tough guy bit was a bit thick…
#26 - I had some pretty blonde hair, but you never would see me in a backward collar at that age. I was even worse in High School. I was one of the quiet ones you had to watch out for.
After discovering a mutual interest in racing Jim Garner and McQueen became good friends. Garner lived directly down the hill from McQueen and as McQueen recalled, “I could see that Jim was very neat around his place. Flowers trimmed, no papers in the yard…grass always cut. So, just to piss him off, I’d start lobbing empty beer cans down the hill into his driveway. He’d have his drive all spic ‘n’ span when he left the house, then get home to find all these empty cans. Took him a long time to figure out it was me”.
Remember the gun (a shortened Winchester 1892 rifle) McQueen carried on Wanted: Dead or Alive?

Newsflash - bridge collapses didn’t start on August 1, 2007.
Neither did discussion.

OK DJ,
Granted, you asked the question rather than “assigned” blame. It’s perfectly legitimate to discuss faulty design as a possible cause, and that’s why I said what I said:

Byrd was rambling on about Michael Vick.
Barbaric!
You know who’s not barbaric?
Dr. Ron Paul is not barbaric.
8^)
Now I have heard it all. Those crazy Jews in Israel are firing cabbages and eggs at the Pali’s. Salads to go.

Reminds me of the “The Great Beer Spill” that happened when I was attending A&M. There are rail tracks that run near Wellborn Street, which at that time was on the western edge of the main campus. One night a rail car loaded with many, many, many cans of beer derailed.
Just imagine the scene. Beer. College students.
Nope, it ain’t me.
And should I be worried he/she lives near by??
#94 That’s uS Congressman Dr. Ron Paul, buddy boy!

So does that mean that Obama’s remarks are breeding terrorists in Pakistan that wouldn’t otherwise have been there? Hey, just following the Democrat train of thought with regard to our troops being in Iraq.

I didn’t think any of those Bloghouston characters lived in Bellville.
Why I’ll bet those Pakistanis are just seething. Maybe we’ll even get a new Islamic Rage Boy out of the deal. I was getting tired of the old one anyway.
You can stick a fork in Obama.

Those guys in Sderot next to Gaza are having a ball. I think someone sent them this book:
“Backyard Ballistics: Build Potato Cannons, Paper Match Rockets, Cincinnati Fire Kites, Tennis Ball Mortars, and More Dynamite Devices”
by William Gurstelle (Paperback - Jun 1, 2001)
$11.95 @ amazon.com
Oh, you mean to say “fork Obama”?
Biologic Warfare has just taken on a new form that I will never forget
A “salad of peace” would be nice. What’s the best dressing to use?

RE: Your Post #95
I just want to see on YouTube a video of some Hamas thug getting whacked in the head with a cannon-fired head of cabbage. I would pay to see that.

Chuck Norris did it in less than one second with no errors with a roundhouse kick to the face!
What about Steve McQueen?
Chuckie (Deputy Dawg) is 4 ft tall so he must have kicked a 6 year old…
Sorry, never liked Chuck Norris or Charles Bronson either… I know they are/were good men in real life and helped people whenever they could but the tough guy bit was a bit thick…
#26 - I had some pretty blonde hair, but you never would see me in a backward collar at that age. I was even worse in High School. I was one of the quiet ones you had to watch out for.
Steve McQueen!
He’s “The King of Cool”!!
http://ww2.tagheuer.com/_img/Ambassadors/Steve%20McQueen/big/Steeve-McQueen.jpg
On him and his friend James Garner:
After discovering a mutual interest in racing Jim Garner and McQueen became good friends. Garner lived directly down the hill from McQueen and as McQueen recalled, “I could see that Jim was very neat around his place. Flowers trimmed, no papers in the yard…grass always cut. So, just to piss him off, I’d start lobbing empty beer cans down the hill into his driveway. He’d have his drive all spic ‘n’ span when he left the house, then get home to find all these empty cans. Took him a long time to figure out it was me”.
McQueen was a pall bearer at Bruce Lee’s funeral!
