Do you make $60,000 a year and want to buy a new Mustang? Well, it’s your lucky day:
Low-income drivers in 16 Texas counties will soon be eligible for financial aid to replace old vehicles.
By the end of the year, the state will begin offering up to $3,500 in vouchers to replace pre-1996 vehicles, some of the heaviest polluters on the roads.
And just what counts as “low-income?”
an owner’s annual income cannot exceed $61,000
Lovely. Now let’s hear from the genius behind this legislation:
“By cleaning up some of the old cars and getting them off the road, you could put a real dent in the pollution numbers,” said state Sen. Kip Averitt, R[INO]-Waco, who led the bill through the Legislature.
Kip, buy ‘em a damn bicycle. Let’s hop on over to Kip’s Senate page and see his other illustrious achievements:
During the past two legislative sessions, Averitt was chosen to fulfill leadership roles on major legislative efforts, including school finance reform and design of the state’s $140 billion biennial budget.
Yeah, that went really well.
Averitt’s leadership has also been recognized by the…Texas Municipal League
Oh goody. Averitt has abandoned any pretense of economic conservatism, and he should be replaced by someone who believes that people should pay for their own cars.

Or… you could buy a car from this guy with money YOU earned and leave a substantial carbon footprint to boot!

I’m thinkin a 3500$ car isn’t going to buy a more non-smoggy car. it would put a nice set of rims on a 1980 buick tho!
Waco huh? Is this bozo a Koreshian?
He’s a Klingon, that’s for sure!
Weasels eat your flesh.
Why don’t they pass a law banning pre 1996 cars from the road or at least tax them more if they are such big polluters?? Or how about raising their registration fees and use those funds to clean up the air. $3500 is just a drop in the bucket toward replacing one’s pre 1996 car!!!
A $3,500 voucher for a newer car but no voucher for education. Do you have to be a citizen to collect? Do you have to have insurance coverage to collect?
Does he own a dealership?
Add on to No. 7: Do you have to have a valid driver’s license?? And can that car be used for drag racing, bank robberies and any other mischief the owner deems necessary to make those car and insurance payments because they will be substantial or are we going to be taxed to pay for that too????
Hey you know what they do not say anything about joint income… so if you make 60K and have an old car but have not gotten rid of it yet, then you may qualify for the voucher.. Let’s see what they say when I walk in with my 89 Chevy Celebrity…
I have a 71 Plymouth.
Does the car have to be running?
My client is a big insurance company, we can buy salvage units for $500. Each and trade them in for a $3,500 voucher.
Faster #11: You do have one, I’ve seen it up close and personal. Even heard that baby run/purr. It’ll be a cold day in Mehico city when you trade that baby in for $3500 I betcha!
I have a 1991 Dodge Caravan SE with less than 100K miles on it that still looks, runs and drives quite nicely. It gets 22- 28 MPG’s. It ain’t going anywhere except in my garage.
Did you hear the one about the guy who bought a brand new caddy ElDorado with a 6.5 ltr engine and everything that you could have on one included? Someone asked him about his gas mileage and he replied that he was getting 20 miles per gallon.
When quizzed about that he said: I told you that I got 20 miles per gallon…I get ten in town and ten on the road!
/insert snare drumm roll here

Trade in your old hooptie for a new hooptie.
We qualify as we both (hubby and I) have a joint income of $55,998.00 (true) and both of us have cars (mine is a 1991 minivan and he has a 1995 4×4 Dodge truck). Does that mean we each get $3,000 ($3,500 if we both want a hybrid)?
It sounds good to us since we don’t want to buy a new car or truck. We volunteer.
That should have read, “It sounds good to us since we did want to buy a new car or truck..
Correct me if I’m in error but does this bill REALLY have Dan Patrick’s fingerprints (and signature) on it?
#19:
Uhhh, no.
#17 Vlou: Don’t do it! We have the kinda vehicles that you can leave running at the gas station, and nobody will steal it! It’s paid in FULL!
3K for another hooptie or 3.5K for a HYBRID? How much do those hybrids costs?
Why did every legislator, including our Dan Patrick, sign this bill?
Anyone have a linkie to the bill and voting record?
Thank-you in advance. I have that darn, free, dial-up.
Iv’e always been impressed by the resourefulness of the Latinos. If you Drive US 59 south towards Victoria and points south, you will invariably see old vehicles being towed by other old vehicles, presumably to sell south of the border. No doubt that will now come to a screaching halt. They’ll get more money here and save the trip.
I passed a convoy of 4, each with a vehicle in tow, headding up a mountain pass. Noticed one towing vehicle making a rod rapping racket as it struggled up a pass. Told Karen it wasn’t long for this world. It clattered on by as we fueled and dined at sunset. Later that evening we caught up to it in the dark, the lead towing vehicle DEAD with a driver at the wheel and another driver behind in the towed car PUSHING the deceased one with its headlight diming. They are resourceful fellows.
Still waiting a verification of Dan’s vote and explanation if true. Can’t find a bill number metioned anywhere.
#21: Can you please gimme a link on the voting record? I AM taking notes on Dan, and will put it in my file. Until then, yawn……Gimme the facts.
DON’T EVEN get me started about the Mexican convoy of vehicles. I see it ALL the time, but I’ve witnessed 8 at a time. I can tell, because of the markings on the towed vehicle on the back window, and have TALKED to them at my local truck stop.
So, If I want to buy an new F-250, I can negotiate my best price, buy a $500 beater to trade in on that beast, AND get $3500 from our government?
That’s Sweet!!!!
Hey folks, has anyone checked to see who voted FOR this boondoggle…….How about Mr. Dan Patrick! He voted FOR it! So I guess the old “go along to get along” is finally seeping into Dan’s repertoire….
Next year, I plan on buying a new truck, so next year, I’ll only pay $350 in property taxes {assuming I get that $3000 rebate for trading in that beater}. I like that!
I guess we don’t qualify (earn too much for a couple) as the limit is $41,000 for couples (no children). Oh, well. Channel 13 (KTRH) spelled out the qualifications for this hefty donation from the State for getting old cars off the highways. Read it and wept.
#25, go look it up.
