We’ve heard the stories time and time again, an inefficient, faceless bureaucracy frustrating a citizen by it’s inability to get things done. In this case, it involved Korean War veteran Nyles Reed and his attempt to get a Purple Heart medal rightfully his.
Korean War veteran Nyles Reed, 75, opened an envelope last week to learn a Purple Heart had been approved for injuries he sustained as a Marine on June 22, 1952.
But there was no medal. Just a certificate and a form stating that the medal was “out of stock.”
The really cool part about Mr. Reed is that his is a tale of many other veterans as to why he didn’t get his medal contemporaneously.
“And I could see this battalion aid station, with Navy corpsmen. So this doc, this surgeon, sewed me up and he says, ‘Do you want a Purple Heart?’ That’s when I said, ‘I haven’t got time! They’re waiting for me up at the front lines,’” Reed recalled. He rushed back to duty.
The men and women of the American military never, ever cease to amaze me. Not only with their heroism or their honor, but also with their persistence.
“I thought it was going to be an easy thing. Well, I found out that’s not true,” Reed said. The first response Reed got was that there was nothing in his record about the incident, and that he had to provide witness statements and other verification.
Reed located two Marine Corps buddies, who provided the statements.
“Then I started sending all this information to congressmen, senators, the president, the commandant of the Marine Corps, anybody,” Reed said. “Well, I kept getting turned down.”
At that point, he could have given up. Instead, he turned to Texas Sen. John Cornyn, a man known for getting things done.
“The real support I got was from Sen. (John) Cornyn.”
Not satisfied with just cutting through the bureaucracy for this Marine, Sen. Cornyn will be in Pearland today to present the medal to him.
I wish I could be there but the Chamber told me by phone that no tickets were available. Typical. If a regular politician had scheduled this, I would have known in plenty of time to purchase a ticket to honor Mr. Reed. Fitting though.
Just two guys need to be there, one a Marine going about his job anonymously, not taking the time to receive his accolades and the other a senator that isn’t concerned with self-promotion, one that just gets the job done.

Good job Sen Cornyn! And thanks for your service Mr Reed!
Ditto x 2!
Hoo-Rah!
cronyn wouldn’t be introuble if he had listened to the taxpayers and voters instead of boosh. cronyn’s loving relationship with johnny satan has cost him dearly. His lack of concern for Ramos and Campion has cost him my vote. Maybe Noriega will get them out of prison. My vote will go to which ever candidate works to free those two BP agents.
Uh Oh NHT - you are setting up the buffet for the trolls!
bigjolly
Good post, however, if John Cornyn cured all cancer, AIDS and single-handedly killed Osama bin Laden, it just wouldn’t be enough.
You got that right.
It is sad that a blog has to become a place where honest opinion is suppressed. Like the dems said go with emotion not fact if you want votes. If you are anti-RINO you pay for it but if you roll over like a dog you get to post. boosh, goodhair, gutless hutch and cronyn are rino’s. If you listened to Paul last week he had tiner bunkhouser on and she is begging for money to pay her salary - not one word about getting rid of darth and ho-hill or not supporting goodhair when he runs for more offices. Me I ain’t voting fo another rino even if it means hillary wins so be it. Conservatives and the rest of the US need to know why everything went Conservative Republican in ‘94 until that lying A** boosh got into office. He is such a GOD fearing man my ACHING A** - nobody signs on with a DRUNKEN FORNICATING ADULTERATING MURDER just to get an amnesty bill passed. boosh thinks of himself first then GOD, voters, taxpayers and the military in an order that suits his purpose at the moment.
Sorry about the trolls and as always you are correct.
How has your opinion been suppressed on this blog?
wow, you know it seems like it was just yesterday that LST was being accused of being too harsh on RINOs, of course, I think the week before that LST was accused of being a Democratic love-fest. I wish you guys would make up your minds, is LST going to be to the left of the KOS kiddies or to the right of the Ditto-heads?
Opinion supressed? Where? Like your tirade on Teddy?
What I find strange is that NHT chose a thread pointing out the heroism of a Marine in the Korean War and the understated role of a Texas senator in getting the Marine hie medal to bash the senator, call people juvenile names and complain about being suppressed.
#9 Of course you are also correct. It hasn’t but then I don’t really care what ml, pp, cp and others who try to brow beat some into agreeing they are all correct and the rest are the village idiots. Some think they are so tuff that the rest should be scared. Let’s play a game for a minute where if you and I don’t agree I threaten you to make you feel inferior such as “watch out or there will be consequences” - give me a break as that is so childish - I respect you and your opinions but when the village tuffs show up then it is suppose to be scared or worried - why? Most are over the hill guys who if they actually had to go for broke would lose badly but with their verbal threats they make themselves seem like they are something they never were. This blog is sinking slowly but surely due to those who post here intimidating others. Look to the right and see the source of income continuing to melt by fewer advertiser being replaced by contributors - the value of the blog is in the advertisers not the contributors or donators. I try to use as many of the advertiser’s as possible from appraisal, hat, shirts, CLOUT and “The Taste Of Texas”. Got to Michelle Malkin or some of the other Blogs and see the life in the blogs - not the slow decay you see here.
These are not the droids you are looking for….

NHT
The thread was posted to show that Cornyn DID THE RIGHT THING in this situation! Can you give him that? Can you say hey, good job for getting this guy his medal? Heck Even Hillary has gotten SOMETHING right (for the life of me I can’t think of anytning).
But… go ahead and continue being repressed….
Come see the violence inherent in the system!
I am posting this in every comment thread today, so no one can claim they didn’t see it.
Have a nice day.
—————–
Here’s what I know–
I have a job; a real job, where I am accountable to others. I must make money to achieve and maintain and posses they things I want in life (food, clothing, housing, health care, family that will have something to do with me, etc.)
Having to worry or even think much about what’s going on in comment threads on LST makes it harder for me to do my real job. And that is a “red line” for me.
That’s why I’ve “outsourced” comment moderation to other contributors–because they seem to like being involved, and that means I don’t have to.
Well, guess what. Some folks are tiring of the nonsense. The vaguely cloaked (or downright explicit) use of inappropriate language. The trolling and mind-games. The discussions of personalities and motives, not facts, or issues, or opinions about issues.
This has largely been an experiment in self-governance… and I deem it to have failed.
So here’s the new rule– I call it the “Pain in Benzion’s Ass Rule” and it is real simple:
If what you are writing or doing in comments on LST becomes a pain in my ass, it and you are gone. No warning. No explanation. No appeal. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here. Doesn’t matter if you’ve contributed to a Begathon. Gone, goodbye, over, forever.
Stop it. Now. Stop. It.
Focus on issues, not on each other. If you disagree with someone, engage with them respectfully. Use facts and logic. If you are feeling really bold, try spell-check and punctuation. If someone is being a jerk, ignore them.
The Sword of Righteousness has been unsheathed, and I am looking for an excuse to start swinging.
Thank you Mr. Reed, and thank you Senator Cornyn.
Nyles Reed Hoo-ra #15 Thank You
Mr Cornyn great job! I hope you keep it up!
You are not perfect, but if you do not
maintain a perfect record and accomplish freedom for C&R you may justifiably lose many good conservative votes on matters that a well informed voter just can not forgive, no matter the pain to the party! Some times pain is a unavoidable price for progress. Promises of a politician are fortunes of fools but the wise will vote on track record and history(BOTH MOST RECENT and HISTORICAL)! E.D.
Thank you and God bless you for your service, Mr. Reed. Thank you Sen. Cornyn for your service to Mr. Reed.
A pox on the houses of the idiot bureaucrats who wrote Mr. Reed that they couldn’t send him his Purple Heart because they were out of stock. But he could BUY one? Huh?? You should buy something that’s not in stock? When it is in stock they can’t send it to you gratis? The mind reels.
