Constitution Day
by The Panda Man · 09/17/2007 4:27 pmDid you know that today is “Constitution Day?”
Constitution Day was created by Congress in 2004. It was the brainchild of Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., who carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket.
The occasion is usually observed on or around Sept. 17, the day the document was adopted in 1787.
But all is not well across the Fruited Plain.
A study being released Monday by a foundation that focuses on journalism and the First Amendment found that 51 percent of high school students questioned had not heard of the day when they are required by law to learn about the Constitution.
While half of students may not have heard of Byrd’s Big Day, the young skulls full of mush are apparently learning something.
Recent national tests show that more students are learning the basics when it comes to history and civics, but are not rising beyond a modest competency in either subject.
My own experience as a gra-duh-ate uf puhblik skuell in the late ‘80s revealed a laughably inadequate and superficial instruction in history and civics. Years later, having largely recovered from my public education, I find little reason to believe that the situation has improved very much. If you have doubts, just ask the civic-minded urchins at the local mall. But never fear parental units, Congress is on the job of ensuring proper instruction for your offspring so that you do not have to lift a finger.
The [Constitution Day] law requires any school and college receiving federal money to teach about the Constitution on or about Sept. 17.
Yes, friends, one day of instruction has been mandated by government to ensure that young, forming brains are filled with the essence of American liberty. And I don’t know about you, but when I think about the essence of American liberty, I think of the ACLU.
Boston University this year will distribute Constitution Day bookmarks and host Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, for a lecture.
But if anti-“fascist Christian capitalist pig” lectures are not your cup of tea, there are pocket Constitutions and blue food!
Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, will hand out pocket copies of the Constitution and serve patriotic meals colored in red, white and blue in the school cafeteria.
Sleep easy tonight, fellow citizens, the future of the Republic is secure in the hands of well-educated youths.
We’re members of the Galleria Constitution Society, where, like, extremism in defense of shopping is, like, you know, no vice!
More serious students may view the Constitution (the U.S. version, not the Galleria version) here.

Our university campus had a very nice, very sparsely attended “Constitution Day” event. The best part of the event was the presentation by one of our tenured faculty about race and gender in the US Constitution (only a few well-placed side jabs - very reserved for her.)
What was most interesting to me was the bribery they used to get students to attend. Our Dean of Students promised $100 to the student organization who brought along the most representatives. (Two organizations brought 4, one brought 3, and one brought…well.. one.) The resulting tie didn’t mean the organizations had to split the money - no, they awarded $100 to each organization.
They also had two teams of two students each play a Constitution challenge game. The winning team received an IPOD shuffle (2 - one for each team member!)
The top 3 senior administration of the university were in attendance, a few lower VPs, a handful of staff, maybe 2 faculty (in addition to the speaker) and then the 20+ students.
But it’s required to hold an observance, as you noted earlier.
I remember a friend of my ex was staying with us for a while. I was watching Gone with the Wind. The part where they were burning Atlanta. She sat her big butt down on the couch and asked if that stuff on TV really happened. I looked at her and couldn’t resist…
I began giving her the “Civil War” for dummies:
Dream sequence music…….
……It all began when the Germans invaded Virginia to run out the British who were oppressing the Indians. Blah blah blah ……. and that’s when they burned Atlanta. Robert E Lee and a group of volunteers from Tennessee ended the war by defeating the Mexicans at the Alamo…. blah blah… she sat there looking at me and asked “For real?” I said “NO, you dumb a$$ don’t you know ANY history?” She said through tears “I never was any good at history” I agreed….
I admit I didn’t know about Constitution day.
Made up in 2004 by Robert Byrd, eh? Did he attach a rider with earmarks to fund something?
And someone else carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket too… now, what was his name?
#1: That was a very sad story. But, being the optimistic person that I am, hey! At least a dozen showed up!
#4: It’s Elvis! Duuuh….

Today is Constitution Day. How will you celebrate? How will you mark the occasion?
On Sept. 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention, meeting in Philadelphia for four months, agreed on the final draft of this special, inspired document and submitted to the several states for ratification.
That was 220 years ago.
In the 21st century, we celebrate many holidays in America – Independence Day, presidential birthdays, Veterans Day, Memorial Day. Yet, no one even acknowledges Constitution Day anymore. That’s tragic.
America has forgotten the two concepts that made her special as a nation – two unique factors that set her apart from the world from the start.
We honor the flag in America, but not the Constitution. The flag is a mere symbol. The Constitution is the real thing. We should revere it, and, more importantly, live under it.

Adios mofos.
Is that a copy of the Constitution in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

“No no don’t bother wrapping that up - I’ll eat it on the way home!”

Re: Picture
It just proves that all men may be created equal, but certainly not all women!
No takers on the red, white, and blue food?
I guess we forgot our priorities. That is why illegal aliens want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias (sorry about the spelling, I wasn’t forced into bilingual education like they are now) instead of Constitution Day. Who cares that it is what the Constitution stands for and gurantees that the illegal aliens want but can’t seem to get around to learning about, much less celebrate. That’s okay we will dumb down the immigration test into spanish so that they can become US citizens. Is this country great or what?? What are the white Dimwits going to do when the Hispanics take over their party or will they let them in. After all the Dimwits only want their votes not their participation.
Dat be funny! But sadly, not far-fetched:
But does anyone else find it ironic that Congress passed a law requiring education on the Constitution…but the authority to do so is not given to them, uh, in the Constitution?
Its been a while since I was in High School but not that long since college (graduated in 1995) and the Constitution was covered quite extensively then.
#8 Danbo - you think you’re the only one that knew it was Constitution Day?
And celebrating Constitution Day and learning about the Constitution is bad why?
Aloha ya’ll. Even then they knew what Democrats would be like:
RICHARD HENRY LEE:
“A MILITIA WHEN PROPERLY FORMED ARE IN FACT THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES, AND INCLUDE ALL MEN CAPABLE OF BEARING ARMS. TO PRESERVE LIBERTY, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE WHOLE BODY OF PEOPLE ALWAYS POSSESS ARMS. THE MIND THAT AIMS AT A SELECT MILITIA, MUST BE INFLUENCED BY A TRULY ANTI-REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLE.

Hey Big, good to hear from ya!
Newsflash, moby - schools teach the Constitution already and a lot more than one day a year. From the same link:
