Our university campus had a very nice, very sparsely attended “Constitution Day” event. The best part of the event was the presentation by one of our tenured faculty about race and gender in the US Constitution (only a few well-placed side jabs - very reserved for her.)

What was most interesting to me was the bribery they used to get students to attend. Our Dean of Students promised $100 to the student organization who brought along the most representatives. (Two organizations brought 4, one brought 3, and one brought…well.. one.) The resulting tie didn’t mean the organizations had to split the money - no, they awarded $100 to each organization.

They also had two teams of two students each play a Constitution challenge game. The winning team received an IPOD shuffle (2 - one for each team member!)

The top 3 senior administration of the university were in attendance, a few lower VPs, a handful of staff, maybe 2 faculty (in addition to the speaker) and then the 20+ students.

But it’s required to hold an observance, as you noted earlier.

I remember a friend of my ex was staying with us for a while. I was watching Gone with the Wind. The part where they were burning Atlanta. She sat her big butt down on the couch and asked if that stuff on TV really happened. I looked at her and couldn’t resist…

I began giving her the “Civil War” for dummies:

    Dream sequence music…….

……It all began when the Germans invaded Virginia to run out the British who were oppressing the Indians. Blah blah blah ……. and that’s when they burned Atlanta. Robert E Lee and a group of volunteers from Tennessee ended the war by defeating the Mexicans at the Alamo…. blah blah… she sat there looking at me and asked “For real?” I said “NO, you dumb a$$ don’t you know ANY history?” She said through tears “I never was any good at history” I agreed….

I admit I didn’t know about Constitution day.

Made up in 2004 by Robert Byrd, eh? Did he attach a rider with earmarks to fund something?

And someone else carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket too… now, what was his name?

Today is Constitution Day. How will you celebrate? How will you mark the occasion?

On Sept. 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention, meeting in Philadelphia for four months, agreed on the final draft of this special, inspired document and submitted to the several states for ratification.

    That was 220 years ago.

In the 21st century, we celebrate many holidays in America – Independence Day, presidential birthdays, Veterans Day, Memorial Day. Yet, no one even acknowledges Constitution Day anymore. That’s tragic.

America has forgotten the two concepts that made her special as a nation – two unique factors that set her apart from the world from the start.

We honor the flag in America, but not the Constitution. The flag is a mere symbol. The Constitution is the real thing. We should revere it, and, more importantly, live under it.

It just proves that all men may be created equal, but certainly not all women!

No takers on the red, white, and blue food?

I guess we forgot our priorities. That is why illegal aliens want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias (sorry about the spelling, I wasn’t forced into bilingual education like they are now) instead of Constitution Day. Who cares that it is what the Constitution stands for and gurantees that the illegal aliens want but can’t seem to get around to learning about, much less celebrate. That’s okay we will dumb down the immigration test into spanish so that they can become US citizens. Is this country great or what?? What are the white Dimwits going to do when the Hispanics take over their party or will they let them in. After all the Dimwits only want their votes not their participation.

Dat be funny! But sadly, not far-fetched:

Tucked into a massive appropriations bill approved without fanfare late last year by Congress is the requirement that every one of the estimated 1.8 million federal employees in the executive branch receive “educational and training” materials about the charter on Constitution Day, a holiday celebrating the Sept. 17, 1787…The law requires every school that receives federal funds — including universities — to show students a program on the Constitution, though it does not specify a particular one…

But does anyone else find it ironic that Congress passed a law requiring education on the Constitution…but the authority to do so is not given to them, uh, in the Constitution?

Its been a while since I was in High School but not that long since college (graduated in 1995) and the Constitution was covered quite extensively then.

#8 Danbo - you think you’re the only one that knew it was Constitution Day?

  17. mby35 on September 17th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

And celebrating Constitution Day and learning about the Constitution is bad why?

  18. Big45Iron on September 17th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Aloha ya’ll. Even then they knew what Democrats would be like:

    RICHARD HENRY LEE:

“A MILITIA WHEN PROPERLY FORMED ARE IN FACT THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES, AND INCLUDE ALL MEN CAPABLE OF BEARING ARMS. TO PRESERVE LIBERTY, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE WHOLE BODY OF PEOPLE ALWAYS POSSESS ARMS. THE MIND THAT AIMS AT A SELECT MILITIA, MUST BE INFLUENCED BY A TRULY ANTI-REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLE.

Hey Big, good to hear from ya!

  20. hamous on September 17th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Newsflash, moby - schools teach the Constitution already and a lot more than one day a year. From the same link:

The demand has proved unpopular with educators, who say that they don’t like the federal government telling them what to teach and that it doesn’t make the best educational sense to teach something as important as the Constitution out of context.

“We already cover the Constitution up, down and around,” said August Frattali, principal of Rachel Carson Middle School in Fairfax County. But, he chuckled, “I’m going to follow the mandates. I don’t want to get fired.”

Mark Stout, social studies coordinator for Howard County public schools, had a similar reaction when asked whether he would create a new program for the holiday: “We already have one of those. It’s called our curriculum.”
