Micah 6:8
by David Benzion · 10/31/2007 12:55 pm[Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church] offer a vivid demonstration of why belief in God is dangerous if it doesn’t include the belief that God’s foremost demand is that human beings act with kindness and decency.
… Phelps and his followers appear to believe fervently in God. Their literature is replete with quotations from the Bible. But the only passages that appear to interest them are those that warn of God’s punishment for wicked behavior. Glaringly absent from their signs, websites, and press releases is the central teaching of ethical monotheism - not just that there is a God, but that God wants men and women to be good to each other. God does not smile on those who taunt victims instead of helping them.
Does the Bible condemn homosexuality? Yes - but not nearly as often as it condemns those who treat others with cruelty. To the Westboro fanatics, no calling is higher than hating homosexuals and anyone who doesn’t share their hatred. But the Bible they thump so intolerantly actually teaches something quite different:
“He has shown you, O man, what is good,” the prophet Micah said. “What does God require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” It is a shining mark in America’s favor that the Westboro Baptist Church is so small.
Amen.

It always offends me that people like Phelps invoke God’s name and cloak themselves in scripture to justify their hatred and prejudice. Like the KKK and others, they entirely miss the point.
Bury Phelps in asbestos underwear, he’s gonna need it…..
Benzion, correct me if I’m wrong, but both Jews and Christians agree theologically that the Law can be reduced to Love God, Love your neighbor. Westboro, kinda forgot about the whole love thing.
If these people like Phelps believe in the “wrath of God” part of the Bible, what happened to all the teachings of Jesus where he was kind to all? Jesus didn’t judge. That’s what makes me sick of people like this talking about how good they are because they go to church, but don’t act like true Christians in their everyday life.
duhmoose
I taught my children that if it is done out of Love it is done for the right reason. You can not rape, rob, kill from or to someone if you love them.
Yes all commandments can be broken down as you say. Love God and Love your neighbor. Phelps is gonna get his just dues in the end.
German army belt buckles from WW2 said “Gott Mit Uns”
(God With Us)
Because it says is, it don’t make it so…..

This is what happens when Christians take parts of the Bible and focus on them to the exclusion of others rather than studying all of it as a whole and applying it.
Also, when men try to become the instruments and/or deliverers of God’s wrath and judgement, they invariably screw it up, and that is the best case scenario.
Call sin for what it is, call people to repentance, but do so out of love and don’t focus on one sin above all others.
Ya’all are being to kind to these folks. What this group does, taunting horrid taunts, depicting horrid acts at the time a Mom and Dad are trying to bury their child, or family is trying to bury their loved one, is evil. This is NOT in God’s name.
The Patriot Guard Riders were started because of this t#rd.
I think Phelps is a closet homosexual or he wouldn’t spend so much time worrying about it.
Phelps was disbarred from practicing law:
“A formal complaint was filed against Fred W. Phelps, Sr. on November 8, 1977 by the Kansas State Board of Law Examiners for his conduct during a lawsuit against a court reporter named Carolene Brady. Brady had failed to have a court transcript ready for Phelps on the day he asked for it; though it did not affect the outcome of the case for which Phelps had requested the transcript, Phelps still requested $22,000 in damages from her. In the ensuing trial, Phelps called Brady to the stand, declared her a hostile witness, and then cross-examined her for nearly a week, during which he accused her of being a “slut,” tried to introduce testimony from former boyfriends whom Phelps wanted to subpoena, and accused her of a variety of perverse sexual acts, ultimately reducing her to tears on the stand.[17] Phelps lost the case; according to the Kansas Supreme Court:
The trial became an exhibition of a personal vendetta by Phelps against Carolene Brady. His examination was replete with repetition, badgering, innuendo, belligerence, irrelevant and immaterial matter, evidencing only a desire to hurt and destroy the defendant. The jury verdict didn’t stop the onslaught of Phelps. He was not satisfied with the hurt, pain, and damage he had visited on Carolene Brady.[17]
In an appeal, Phelps prepared affidavits swearing to the court that he had eight witnesses whose testimony would convince the court to rule in his favor. Brady, in turn, obtained sworn, signed affidavits from the eight people in question, all of whom said that Phelps had never contacted them and that they had no reason to testify against Brady; Phelps had committed perjury.[17]
On July 20, 1979, Fred Phelps was permanently disbarred from practicing law in the state of Kansas,[17] but continued to practice in the Federal courts.
In 1985, nine Federal judges filed a disciplinary complaint against Phelps and five of his children, alleging false accusations against the judges. In 1989, the complaint was settled, with Phelps agreeing to permanently stop practicing in Federal court, and two of his children suspended for periods of six months and one year.[18]”

DB, Suggest posting #11 at the top of the thread as an update so it receives the prominence it so richly deserves.
The only good thing Phelps has ever done was to be sow low life that it caused the creation of the PGR which is not only escorting soldiers, the wall, and now LEO’s also.
