What a shocker. The Houston Chronicle prints another article sympathetic to the two thieves that lost their lives in a failed burglary attempt. This one includes quotes from the “Colombian community”, as if it matters what a particular ethnic group thinks about this case.
In Colombia, the Houston slayings were featured in the Dec. 8 issue of Semana, the nation’s largest weekly news magazine, which carried a story under the headline ”License to Kill.” The daily newspaper El Pais in Cali used the headline ”Firearms in the Household Divide Americans” in its story about the controversy generated by the killings.
How about we change the question? Hey, Mr. Average Colombian, do you think that your country would be the same cesspool of drug related violence if you had something similar to the 2nd Amendment that allows U.S. citizens to protect themselves? From thieves and thugs that enter your country illegally and terrorize its citizens?
Colombian officials in Houston ”will be very attentive to the case,” said Consul General Maria Cristina Chirolla who expressed confidence authorities here will conduct an ”honest and truthful” investigation.
Suggestion: pay attention to the crime in your own country. Tell your people to stop crossing our borders illegally. Tell your people to stop forming gangs in our country, gangs which terrorize our people.
”The great question is, ‘does a person have a right to kill other people only because he suspects them?’; and moreover, when these people had their backs to him and were unarmed,” Chirolla said.
Get it straight: these weren’t “suspects”. These were thieves caught red-handed. Period. And moreover, these thieves did not have their backs to him, they ran at him, created a chaotic situation and died because of the choices they made. Period.
”Whatever someone is doing wrong, the only ones who have the right to prosecute them, to put them in prison, are the authorities,” said Jairo Riascos, a cousin of Hernando Riascos Torres. ”The only thing we want is for the authorities to bring charges because he didn’t kill two animals; he killed two human beings.”
I have no idea how this particular case will turn out but that is an incorrect assessment of Texas law. Texas law allows its citizens to protect themselves and their property from thieves and thugs. Mr. Horn did not go looking for someone to kill that day. The two thieves made the choice to terrorize a neighborhood and to run at a man with a shotgun telling them not to move. It really isn’t complicated.
Marling Quiñonez, a 30-year-old Colombian native, said she lived with Diego Ortiz for six months before his death and described him as quiet ”and a very good guy, a sweet man.”
Ah, yes. Such a “good guy, a sweet man”. A man so good that he chose to terrorize an honest immigrant, immigrants that were working hard to fulfill the American dream. So sweet that he violated their home and took their hard earned cash because his Colombian background didn’t instill in him the values necessary to work hard and realize his own dream. Values that say, “hey, you work, I steal”. Yes, such a “good guy, a sweet man”.
”Nobody has the right to cut short a life,” said Lucia Hernandez. ”From what I heard, they weren’t harming anyone. What they were doing was bad, but they didn’t deserve to have their lives shortened.”
Again, read Texas law. And if you think that breaking into someone’s home doesn’t harm them, then you obviously have not had it happen to you. It does harm people. This isn’t about some innocent guys stealing a pack of gum. This is about hardened criminals breaking into a home in the middle of the day. No fear. No respect.
Joe Horn did what he had to do that day. Leave him be.

Great post and comments BigJ. Does anyone besides me get the impression these folks think picking and choosing which laws are good and which laws are bad, is a way of life here. Obey the ones you want, ignore those you don’t agree with. Columbia, home of terror and drug cartels. I feel so bad for Mr. Horn. He’s being prosecuted in the press.
But didn’t you know we are “suppose” to ONLY rely on the gubment to protect us. We aren’t suppose to do anything for ourselves. Where do you get off thinking that we are actually suppose to actively participate in our OWN welfare……
/sarcasm off
Yet another example of how America is now looked at by the world community. For shame, for shame. Will November ‘08 ever get here?
Amen. Well said.
From The Comical, Hernando Riascos Torres, Says; ”The only thing we want is for the authorities to bring charges because he didn’t kill two animals; he killed two human beings.” No,…He killed two animals, pieces of useless excrement!
I am confused about this whole thing on Horn.
First we have a government at the federal, state and local level not enforcing the laws. A citizen minding his own business sees illegal alien criminals committing a burglary shoots and kills them.
So it is the governments fault as i see it for this to have even happened in the first place.
Down with the USA welcome to the North American Union.
Republicans and Democrats seem to be united on this - don’t ya think?
Wonder how many Colombians are black. Did the two perps perhaps move there from one of the islands? Were they really Colombians? Is there racial animosity between hispanics and blacks in South America? News stories never go there…. Wonder why.
If there is in indictment, it better include the federal, state and local governments, George Bush and One tRick Perry. Derelict all in fulfulling their basic responsibility to protect us. Too distracted with unconstitutional social programs, HPV, TTC, etc. to do their fundamental jobs. Don’t even get me started. The Comical(ly biased) isn’t even worthy of toilet paper designation.
#3 “Another example of how America is looked at by the world community?” THAT’S what you get out of this story? Wow. Uh, dude, everywhere I’ve traveled in the world, and that’s about a dozen countries, the average person I met would cut off one of their arms and sell it to be able to get a passport and visa to America.
Guess you’re just another one of those “patriotic liberals…”
Why don’t the Columbian officials advice their people to sneak back to Columbia because this bad, evil, gun carrying country has laws that don’t allow them to break into other people’s home, steal their stuff that they worked hard to get and then have to pay any consequences for their actions. The Crummyicle, in its usual lack of wisdom, has chosen to defend ILLEGAL immigrants who broke the law and had their chance to surrender and prove their innocense in a court of law, interrupted by gunfire that cost them their lives. They ultimately are responsible for their actions, actions that resulted in their death. They could have easily been shot by the homeowner inside the home they broke into.
goodjobtim #3
If you believe the U.S. to be that evil why not move to one of the 3rd world countries you seem to value so much.
I know it will be hard for the rest of us with out you here but it is a sacrifice we are willing to make.
Thank you Joe Horn.
THawk, I am glad you jumped on this. These countries who don’t like us very much, sure take our money and have their hands out. Being the world leader isn’t a popularity contest.
Robert and Lawrence… Yes, but I have decided the Chronical is loosing so much readership, they have to appeal to these minorities. They should just start printing the paper in other languages and forget about English.
#11 trl3 - I’m certain GJT was speaking tongue-in-cheek.
Too bad, So sad.
I’m gonna miss those two criminals.
#13
If that be the case GJT would have my apology for my failure to recognize the true nature of his comment.
Colombians are responsible for more drugs and destruction to American society than perhaps any other group.
Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
You want all your criminals back, you can have them. Maybe the guerrillas will finance their return.
I wish someone in the know would figure out the sum of money Joe Horn saved us by eliminating the cost of incarceration up to trial, lawyers, etc.
American Women #17
Well into 7 figures, we probably owe Joe Horn a box of shells.
I think the federal, state and local governments should make every effort to round up all the illegal Columbians in this country and ship them back to Columbia for their own protection. They are not safe here as long as their are “gun totting” law abiding citizens, like Joe Horn in our communities, who are h*ll bent on protecting their’s and their neighbors property. Oh, and when will the Crummyicle start printing in foreign languages to improve on their circulation.
Are the Americans who CHOOSE to become addicted to those drugs just helpless victims bearing no responsibility? Looks like you’re doing a little stone-throwing there too.
Where is the outrage. I mean, where is the Puerto Rican outrage. The chuzpah of a Colombian to pretend he is Puerto RIcan. I am OUTRAGED!
Observation:
People like the idiots at the Chronicle don’t believe in property rights, at least not for the little people, so it’s only natural that they be appalled that someone would resort to deadly force to defend his or someone else’s property. To them, the items being stolen don’t belong to anyone anyway, and why would anyone kill for nothing?
Also, for them there is no connection between a person’s belongings and his livelihood. They don’t, or won’t, understand that theft is a direct threat to a victim’s ability to put food on the table, a roof over the head, etc.
In short, they are disconnected from reality, and when you are disconnected from reality, you can justify all sorts of nonsense.
#22 Great point. Communists HATE private property, so it makes sense that all the leftists at the Chronicle would dismiss and belittle anyone’s attempt to protect it.
Wow, I think you just figured out a major part of the way liberals think. No doubt that “columnist/communist” at the chron that’s been writing so many negative articles about Joe Horn is a leftist who views the very concept of private property with disdain.
Another layer of the onion of liberalism is peeled away….
Note that in the article the writer carefully (and purposefully) neglected to mention the legal status of those interviewed. They are described as US “residents”, which leaves one to conclude that there are illegals among ‘em, no?
That dog won’t hunt, Chron.
We should expect nothing less from the liberal rag.
Here’s a thought a little “on/off topic”:
If the majority of the large advertisers would ever ask this question to the muckety-mucks at the comical: “What is your home delevered paid circulation?” Then compare that number to their total claimed circulation figures, they would quickly realize that only a fraction of their advertising messages actually get into the hands of folks who have paid to have the paper delivered.
The remaining papers printed are either “street sales by “hawkers” on the street corners” or papers used for promotional purposes (These are some of the ones you see thrown into your front yards on occasion)or papers sent out of the area which have zero value to local advertisers. The total circulation numbers are actually press run totals and have absolutely nothing to do with actual sold or potentially read copies. They have been scamming advertisers for years and getting by with it. There is a LOT of money involved!
Why is the border still “wide open”?
I am sure ya’ll have signed the petition right?
http://www.reformus.org/
Inexcusably, House and Senate negotiators have removed the $3 billion needed to build the authorized Border Fence between the U.S. and Mexico. Sign the petition below to the Democratic leaders of Congress and President Bush, asking them to restore the $3 billion funding to the DHS Appropriations Bill and actually build the fence.
26 daniel the republicans and democrats want the North American Union.
Question. Does anyone here want to look back and ask a question of the Pasadena PD. With their checkered and tainted past. With the news of late of the possible mistreatment (killing) of a prisoner.
Is it possible that Joe Horn handled the matter himseld because he knew the Pasadena PD might have botched the whole thing.
The apparent arbitrariness of the government’s immigration enforcement policies is troubling. When you think about these two criminal illegals who Horn shot, ust look at the record of who the thugs in blue and brown actually “protect” us from:
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/12/14/europe/EU-GEN-Iceland-US.php
That’s right. The drug-running burglar thugs who Horn shot cross into the U.S. freely and with full sympathy from the left, but a harmless tourist from Iceland who accidentally let her visa lapse 12 years ago shows up for another vacation and gets clamped in leg irons. That’s “Homeland Security” for ya!
I don’t know. Some of those Icelanders are pretty freaky ; - )
The intent is to convict him in the Court of Public Opinion and the World Court of Thirdworld superiority (UN & State dept. pressure) giving the Grand Jury painful option.
All of the Peaceloving Constituency of peoples and nations do not want this to be no billed.
They DID botch the thing. It took 7 minutes between the call being placed and Horn’s confrontation with the thugs.
Pasadena PD’s central station is less than 4 miles from Horn’s home, and surely they had cops out on dispatch who were even closer. Horn’s neighborhood is about a block away from Fairmont Parkway. A 7 minute response time to a burglary in progress off a major road in a compact urban municipality is inexcusable.
#20
Please tell me you’re not defending Colombian drug lords simply because Americans buy their addictive and destructive products.
Also - I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but every time I listen to that tape I am amazed at the outright contempt that the 911 operator has for civilian firearm ownership, as displayed in his comments to Horn.
Based on that guy’s statements you’d think Horn was some crazed trigger-happy gunman who had never used a firearm and was on the verge of accidentally shooting both himself and half of the Pasadena PD.
Even BEFORE the shooting and BEFORE Horn said he was going outside the 911 guy was trying to get Horn to disarm himself: “I don’t want you to have that gun in your hand when those officers are poking around out there.”
Horn responded that the gun was legal and he was protecting himself. Then the 911 guy makes this absurd suggestion, again trying to get Horn to disarm himself: “You gonna get yourself shot if you go outside that house with a gun, I don’t care what you think.”
In what way is the 911 guy justified in assuming that Horn would get himself shot? That Horn would be unable to defend himself with his own gun? He just assumes that Horn, by virtue of being a lowly civilian, must be a bad shot or must be inept when it comes to using a firearm.
The dispatcher’s arrogance continued after Horn shot the two criminals. When Horn informed him the criminals were down, he angrily shouted “Mister Horn, put that gun down before you shoot an officer of mine.” Then again: “Put that gun down! There’s officers out there without uniforms on. Do not shoot anybody else, do you understand me?”
Horn had already put the gun down inside his house before the dispatcher even asked. The events of that day proved that Horn was both a responsible gun owner and an excellent shot, yet even BEFORE the incident happened the 911 dispatcher showed nothing but contempt for the fact that Horn had a gun and was prepared to use it in defense against criminals.
And while you’re thinking about that keep in mind that Joe Horn never once left his own property.
Ok, PhiliM
We get it, you hate the police. If only you would have been there!
Personally I have sympathy for Mr. Horn and I am pretty sure he felt fed up with the Pasadena PD’s lack of response. I know full well what it is like to have a Pasadena Policeman put a loaded semi automatic pistol to my head only to have his superviser call him an idiot make him go get the perp I called them to get.
I am not sure what the Pasadena PD is like now however I can assure you that the Pasadena PD of 30 years ago (probably still the same) employed some real “good old boys” that should not have touched a gun much less carried one.
Either way. The two Colombian, Puerto Rican, Illegal, Criminals volunteered for the slab in the Morgue.
K-Roger, there are two sides to every drug deal. It amazes me that people think if we remove the incentives to come here illegally, they will self deport, but nobody says, if we remove the incentive to sell drugs, they will stop importing them.
#37
How do you propose we remove the incentive to sell drugs, practically speaking?
K-Roger, first off, we need to stop looking at drug users as innocent victims. They are guilty of a crime and should be prosecuted, punished, then sent to rehab.
#33 K-Roger - Of course not, but its ridiculous to the extreme for you to suggest that Colombians are the single biggest cause of our drug-related crime. The single biggest cause of our drug-related crime is our consumption of illegal drugs. Its the simple economics of supply and demand. If there is a market for a commodity, legal or illegal, it will be filled. We can debate whether it is pragmatic to continue with a prohibition of drugs now deemed illegal but to lay all the blame on Colombians is right out of the Victicrat play book.
Ok suppose Joe Horn’s neighbor had an alarm system like my son has at his business on FM1960 near Willowbrook mall. One day i worked for my son who was out of town and opened the business. I forgot to turn off the alarm. a minute later it goes off and a call comes from the alarm company. i told them i did not know his secret code so they could keep the police from coming and they hung up.
An hour and forty five minutes later the cops show up.
now i ask all who have an alarm hooked up what good is that? i have an alarm at my home and it will go off and discourage a thief but for the cops to take that long responding is ridiculuos.
a gun is your best friend in burglary.
#33 - Nat
“The intent is to convict him in the Court of Public Opinion and the World Court of Thirdworld superiority (UN & State dept. pressure) giving the Grand Jury painful option.”
This is true. The Comical is trying so hard to make Joe Horn out to be the bad guy. The funny thing is how badly it is failing. Public opinion is obviously in favor of Joe Horn’s actions, given how quickly Quanell X was chased out of the neighborhood by Horn’s neighbors grateful to him for removing the thieving scum.
I’m not worried too much about the Comical in terms of the UN or Colombia. If not many people are reading the Comical here, there can’t be many readers in Colombia or the UN.
The Houston Comical: News and opinion worth lining the bottom of the bird cage.
Basara
Why would you do that to your bird ?
On the other hand the bird might enjoy telling the crummycle what it thinks of it too.
#5 Dave D — You stole my thunder.
”The only thing we want is for the authorities to bring charges because he didn’t kill two animals; he killed two human beings.”
I agree with you fully. He killed two animals that everyone is better off without. Smith & Wesson are my two best friends.
Thank you Crummyicle for trying to convict Joe Horn in the “court of public opinion”. Unfortunately for you the jury is stacked against you and “jury nullification” is a distinct possiblity. Oh, and so is subscription cancellations.
Maybe you had better take a poll!! Or maybe you did and decide to go against it anyway and support those two illegal alien criminals who break into this country first and then into honest citizen’s homes, next and then, lucky for the rest of us, paid the ultimate price. It sure would be nice if the other burglars would take the hint!!!!
The police are not here to protect you. Only on TV are the police there to protect you. On TV there’s also a sponge that lives under the sea in a pineapple.
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he.
Mayorwhitechiefhurtt is on top of this simply by installing more surveillance cameras. That way, they can see who the illegal aliens shoot to death after they rob them. Their motives are not to be questioned by any of the unwashed masses.
Not sure how calling these criminals animals furthers the discussion in any positive way.
Daniel, even worse, now the Congress (opposite of Progress) wants to ease the new passport requirements at the borders because it might inconvenience some people who travel and those poor gubment workers.
As regards Mr. Horn, if we could raise enough money to buy a bomb to send to bin Ladin, surely we can get together to buy Mr. Horn a better shotgun and more ammo. What say Ye?
What’s up Big? How’s life in paradise?
Aloha ya’ll. It’s been raining for 2 solid months in Paradise. Should end in March. Welcome back to the tropics!!
Aloha Big45….
Oh, and if it will make you feel any better, traffic here is worse than Houston. There are no alternative routes here. 600,000 cars jammed on 50 miles of freeway going to and from work every day. Takes me 60-90 minutes to drive 19 miles. Lucky I live Hawaii!!
Big45 great to read ya!! Merry Christmas to you and yours. You are not allowed to complain. You live in paradise.
The Colombians are upset that one of their countrymen was shot down in Texas during the commission of a felony crime.
That just breaks my ever loving heart. I shed a single tear. Come on tear get out here.
Perhaps Mr. Horn should be awarded one of these, just in case they do try to come after him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsAqXaqabbc
Three more and he’s an Ace!!
big iron how much that mother costes?
I wonder how a similar situation of protection of property in Columbia would be handled. I’ve heard that folks go to necessarily extreme means there, but never hear what happens afterwords.
Maybe we should ask the complaining Columbian community.
The Chron did some editorializing on this subject in a Sunday article.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/5380759.html
“Horn needed precision shooting to hit two moving targets going in different directions in a matter of seconds.”
Precision shooting is taking doves on the wing with a 410, hitting anything at 10′ with a shotgun is not. But that is just an opinion.
Mr Abbott has firgot someone is suing the state on budget issues. He ansered this one this way - how did he do on the budget question?
mr Abbott is a repuklican bum. Run more bums repuklicnas so i can vote democratic or independant. The repubs have had plenty of chances and messed up on almost al of them. Hello North American Union!!

Liberal Democrat Jim “Do Nothing” Dunnam Back Doing Intellectual Battle Unarmed
Forgets He Was the Leader of the Ultimate Exercise in Political Cowardice, Oklahoma Ring a Bell?
Austin-Today the Republican Party of Texas responded to Jim “Do Nothing” Dunnam’s childish stomping of his feet when things do not go his way. In a statement dated December 15th Dunnam spews vitriolic “backbencher” pabulum this time aimed at esteemed Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
“Today the leader of the Texas House Democrats sunk to a new low. Jim Dunnam’s comments about General Abbott’s decision are yet another example of his “backbencher” status, always placing partisanship over leadership,” said Hans Klingler, Spokesman for the Texas GOP.
Last Saturday, Dunnam released a rambling and bitterly partisan account of General Abbott’s decision to simply follow the law regarding the request about the house process for removing a sitting Speaker. Dunnam, who is a plaintiff’s trial lawyer, uses no discernable legal reasoning for his diatribe instead choosing a political route.
“Historically, Texas voters will remember it was Dunnam who led a coalition of his liberal cohorts embarrassingly across the border to hide out in Oklahoma in 2003 instead of doing the taxpayers business and also it was Dunnam who spent the last legislative session following the Nancy Pelosi playbook placing partisanship over leadership for 140 days,” said Klingler.
ah hal dont like post about Abbott that are negative.
What? No posts from EPJ? Did he get himself banned or something?
DowJones, I think that those got banned outside of military use unfortunately. Understanding that I am an extremely strong 2nd Amendment advocate, I can see where those would be the most dangerous weapons on the street - even more so than a belt fed weapon except in the hands of a trained expert.
In Colombia, if you are rich, you get to have your own private army guarding your hacienda. And I don’t think if you are caught burglarizing said hacienda that you have much chance of being remanded for trial….mostly you get remanded for burial. Joe Horn’s method is just more cost effective for the home owner, rather than hiring private security. The average American doesn’t make enough from running drugs.
EPJ was the undercover cop who saw everything.

Now THAT is funny! Only a long time LST member would understand. Good to see you back!
On a personal note, I’m heading to Hawaii next October, any tips? Still haven’t decided between a hotel, a home for the week or a cruise between islands.
Any tips?
BigJ, my only recommendation is you don’t come October thru February. Rain rain rain. With the super ferry now running, you could come to Oahu, rent your car, take the ferry to another Island and visit it, then come back. The price to go to the other islands is about $50 per person per island, plus the car being about another $50 and you get to take your car. Which of the other islands to go to depends on what you want out of your vacation.
And how about the surviving “fiancee” of the dead burglar Ortiz or Dejesus or whatever his name was/is/mighthavebeen. She is all over the news with her/their baby in arm espousing what a nice/non-criminal sweet guy her dead husband-to-be(?) was. Where the hell did she think the money to feed her baby was coming from? It wasn’t like he was clocking in at Walmart everyday. He was officially unemployed acording to every account I have read. Her credibility and any sympathy I might have had is preempted by her willingness to accept his criminal plunder. Has anyone questioned her legal status? Or of any of the survivors of either of these criminals.
