Regardless of what you think about Bob Dole, Mitt Romney’s response to Dole’s letter to Rush Limbaugh supporting John McCain is classic.
First, he says this on Fox News this morning about Dole.
Well, it’s probably the last person I would have wanted write a letter for me.
Then McCain issues this statement.
Governor Romney’s attack on Bob Dole is disgraceful, and Governor Romney should apologize. Bob Dole is a war hero who has spent his life in service to this nation and nobody has worked harder to build the Republican Party. Bob Dole deserves the respect of every American and certainly every Republican.
Governor Romney denounced Ronald Reagan in the mid ’90s while Bob Dole was working tirelessly to elect Republicans across the country. Governor Romney was missing from those fights when I was standing with President Reagan and Senator Dole to build the Republican Party.
Which causes Mitt to “clarify” his remarks while in West Virgina later this morning.
Romney said he’d “love” to have Dole’s support and recalled going to several of his fundraisers.
Heh. From “last person I’d want” to “love to have you Bob” in a couple of hours. Sweet. This one probably tops them all though.
“I believe I was a contributor to his presidential campaign,” said Romney. “If I wasn’t, I should have been.”
That, mi amigos and amigas, is Mitt Romney in a nutshell.

Better than pro-immigration, anti-free speech, dope dealing wife, pimping for crooked S&L exec, etc.
Saw Sen. Dole on Hannity & Colmes last night. He seemed to be a little uncertain about the release of his letter to Rush to the media, but it did come from him, not Rush. Kinda waffling on his views on the primary, but the definite thrust was it was McCain’s “turn” as it was Dole’s turn in ‘96.
Hello? Since when is there an order of sucession within the party when the party’s core values are sacrificed to that? No wonder the Washington insiders don’t get it–they don’t listen.
This is also classic McCain, immediately pointing to Dole as a ‘war hero’ and saying everyone should respect him.
Adee - But he sure looked good for an old guy. May have to try me some of that Viagra ; - )
This Achilles heel of Romney will haunt him big time in any general elction.
Hamous, See the thread above. Rush is currently dealing with the letter’s release, which was inteneded to be personal, and the McCain campaign involvement in distortion. No wonder Sen. Dole seemed uncertain last night.
The McCain campaign has obviously learned and adapted techniques from the Clintons.
I’m not so thrilled about Romney, but in this (oh yet, once again) hold-your-nose election, he’s preferable to McCain, Clinton, and Obama.

So I guess you’re going to vote for McCain then, right BJ?
Not planning on it. Why do you say that?
Big Jolly, tell me please why you are pro McCain,
he seems to be the biggest flip flopper of them all. It is enough to gag me when I hear him saying how he’s a Reagan foot soldier. ARRRGH!
KRAUT,
Please don’t say I’m pro-McCain. Sheesh, you guys….
I’m very much still a Huck guy. Just ’cause he doesn’t have a chance doesn’t matter to me, it’s the primary and I’m voting for my guy. Pointing out each guys strengths and weaknesses (notice I’ve spared you the Huck positions because he’s out of it) doesn’t make me pro or anti anyone.
BTW, you people might want to consider voting for Huck if you really, really want to stop McCain:

Hey Big, No I haven’t counted out Huck like the rest of the media, I just hope that we in Texas will have a chance to make a difference. But I will not vote for McCain.
Realistically, he’s out of it. But, he can still make it a brokered convention. Outside shot of course, but it could still happen. Either way, I’m going to vote for him, I doubt he’ll drop out. No reason to. He’s not in debt and is still raising money. He’s proven he doesn’t need much money to be somewhat competitive.

Huck is going a long way on little money, that in itself is very telling.
If WV is any indication, why would we do that?
You have to read the link, Malty. The thing is, WV going to Huck is better than if it had gone to McCain. Sure, you want it for Romney, but any delegates not pledged to McCain inhibits his drive for 1,191. And that seems to be the goal of the stop McCain people. Who, for the most part, are not for Romney.
It’s not that simple. If Huckabee and McCain are tag teaming to push Romney out…… then that’s dirty politics. Wouldn’t you like for your vote to count, and not have mass manipulation by the powers who want this title so badly, decide who are the final two?
Dang KRAUT, the exit polls are looking better than I could have possibly thought.
Too bad he couldn’t raise money. Ah well, such is life.
Nonsense. Politics is politics.
No whining.
Unless you’re name is Mitt, of course.
Ah it’s all crystal clear to me now. No wonder the hair stands up on the back of my neck when Huckabee is mentioned. Politics trumps being a Baptist Preacher. The higher power, do what’s right, be good to each other, preacher just lost to the ambitious, greedy, hungry for power politician.
LOL, AW, Huck hasn’t been a preacher for about 18 years.
The man who hasn’t been a preacher for 18 years preaches on Sunday to the congregations while running for office and does a video clip at Christmas reminding us that Jesus is the reason. ……. Barf
Oh, so politicians should not be allowed to have beliefs. Interesting.

Because you have to count delegates. Mitt will win some, Huck will (hopefully) win some. Brokered convention is all we can hope for.
You want Mitt to win, I got that. I don’t and I really don’t think many do. So..McCain says vote for Huck, hoping it will stop Mitt. What he doesn’t see is Huck winning 5 or 6 states tonight.
I’m telling you, that is the only way to stop the Express. IMO but don’t discount me so quickly.
Was Romney really, truly, your first choice? If so, then yeah, you might not like my strategy. If not, well…..
